There were a few things that made me never want to go back to this place.... First was the price to quantity of food ratio. I spent over 20$ and didn't even get close to being full. I got an Unagi Donburi, because I saw a picture it, which look like a full bowl. But when I got it, the bowl wasn't even half full. Which leads me to the next thing that ticked me off was the customer service. Feeling ripped off, I asked the man at the counter if I really just paid 11$-12$ for HALF a bowl. Giving this place one star literally hurts my soul. Being a regular and having worked at a popular sushi restaurant before, I know first hand whether the quality of fish is up to par or if a tempura has kept out and re-fried over and over again. That being said, I went to Sushiman not once, but TWICE, on January 10,2015 (Sunday). The first time I went, I was with my cousin and we decided to grab a dynamite maki and a couple rolls to go before she headed to the airport. She placed the phone order and we were told it'd be ready in 10 minutes. Okay, no problem. We arrived 15 minutes later only to have to wait 15 MORE minutes on top of that because our food WAS NOT READY. So a total of 30 minutes for a maki and 2 hand rolls. Ridiculous, much? I think so. But fine, she was busy and working by herself so we didn't make a stink about it but rather understood that she was working hard and told her to keep up the good work (although she did not even have the courtesy apologize for having us wait so long). On our way, while eating in the car, our teeth started hurting while eating the dynamite maki. The tempura was SO hard that it felt like we were chewing endlessly on solid rock candy. The "tempura" breading part was what was really hard and the shrimp inside was abnormally chewy..like gum. Uh... I'm not sure about you but I like my tempura crispy and FRESHLY fried. We're young now, our teeth are pretty strong but THIS maki (as they call it) was NOT edible. We were in absolute disgust but let it slide, saying "maybe they just had an off day"...mostly because the owners are Korean and so are we. YEAH YEAH YEAH. That's where we made the mistake. Letting it slide because they're our "people" and we "protect our own". PFT. So after eating 2 pieces, we couldn't stand to eat anymore so we threw it away without making a complaint or calling or anything. BUT, after I dropped off my cousin at the airport and ran some errands, it was early dinner time. I decided to give Sushiman another shot for dinner..ON THE SAME DAY. I guess I was just giving them the benefit of doubt and wanted to see if they actually make their food fresh to order or if ALL their tempuras were previously fried, then refried over again when ordered. So, for dinner, I made a big order since I had to feed my family. I ordered 2 dynamite manis, 2 tempura rolls, 3 red dragon rolls, 2 Philly rolls, and a spicy ahi maki. She then again said it'd be ready in 10 mins, but I arrived in 5, just to sit down and chill till the food was ready. 5 minutes pass, no food. 10 mins pass, no food. I ended up waiting an ADDITIONAL 15-20 minutes for my food, but this time she wasn't alone. She had 3 helpers and STILL, I was kept waiting for a long time. I SHIT YOU NOT.. the tempura, OMG I'm gagging while typing this because I still have a bad taste in my mouth from it. Same. Rock hard, chewy, un-edible, and absolutely unacceptable. We tossed more Than half of our order.This time, having spent about $50 on sushi we didn't even eat or enjoy eating, I was upset. But not only was I upset, so was my mother. Now, my mother, she is not the type to EVER complain or ask to speak to a manager if her food comes out wrong. She'll just keep quiet and eat it without even letting US know that she wasn't satisfied or happy with her food. But for her to get upset to the point of calling Sushiman and speaking to the lady owner who made the rolls, it speaks in volumes. The point of her calling wasn't to get free food, or the food re-made, or even a refund(not that it was even offered). But simply to just "let them know for the fifties". Boy oh boy, you wouldn't believe the response we got from the lady owner. She refused to take any accountability and kept cutting my mother off mid-sentence, practically yelling over the phone without a single apology on her behalf. She kept asking us, "why didn't you come back and return the food if you didn't like it so much?" In a sassy, I'm right & you're wrong kind of tone. BAFFLED, I explained to her that we live far. We didn't get to eat the food till we got home and there's no way I'm driving all the way back into town just to have her REMAKE me another one of the rock hard dynamite makis. She then went on saying that she'll only make us ONE maki and two tempura rolls next time we come. UHMM.. I would never return after our HORRIBLE Experience. Not only did the food taste disgustingly gross and nasty, but the fish was not fresh. I am currently writing all this while suffering from stomach pains after eating their sushi and I've been having the runs since. I understand that that may be TMI, but what made me more furious is the fact that her customer service skills were beyond poor and the quality&freshness of their food was nonexistent. Getting sick from their food, receiving the shittiest customer service and having been treated like WE were in the wrong, when we absolutely weren't, I would NOT EVER recommend this place to a friend or even to an enemy. read more

Went to this place for some cheap and fast sushi with a friend. We actually wanted to get it to-go but they refused our request because they said they had already prepared it. When the roll arrived, it did not look ANYTHING like the photo; our roll was drenched in mayonnaise sauce. I am a frequent eater but I will honestly not eat here again. I used to go for the convenience of it since I lived down the road. I eat there about 4 times a month averaging $25-30 a time. My last experience, I ordered the nigiri bento. I bit into the ika nigiri and it was spoiled. I could taste the smell of it. Slimy and all. That goes for the ikura and tobiko. The owner also made a big deal about giving me extra ginger. I didn't have cash(mind you they have a $10 minimum for credit) and it was 30cents. I spent $30. He didn't even give me extra being that I'm a regular there. I also walked in when they (the owners) were having lunch with their friends. This place is rather good. It's more of an average thing with low prices and a nice setting to sit in. I was looking for sushi to go and the cook provided it. I want to say that the sushi rolls were very nicely wrapped and tasty. Each piece had volume and lingered in my mouth well after I digested it. I just ordered lunch here. I have been to many Sushiman on Oahu and I will never go back to this one. The woman making my food was eating with her gloves on while I sat there with my mouth open. When I got my food, my veggie tempura roll was a shrimp tempura roll and my spicy veggie roll was just sauce and rice. Literally. And it took them a long time to make this! I am so sad. read more

This place isn't the best sushi we've ever had, but it also isn't the worst. The salmon based options are probably the best. The ahi they have is probably from younger or smaller fish. It's always really light in color. It probably has to do with cost. It's not poor quality by any means, just not now I prefer my ahi. Having said that, the rolls are good, but not something we will normally order. We've been here a few times since it's right by our house. Price wise, it's about average. Overall, we like it. As with most restaurants, there's stuff on the menu we like and stuff we don't. The Philadelphia roll is really good. I feel like Philly rolls should have a refreshing feel when eating them, and theirs do. We also recently had the California roll with spicy salmon on top. That was delicious. Definitely spicy. My biggest complaint probably? The last time I picked up dinner here, I asked for the Edamame to be warmed up. We just don't like it cold. It doesn't taste good. At first, the girl forgot to put it with my order. When I reminded her about it, she still gave it to is cold. U didn't realize it was cold until we got home. I put it in the steamer and warmed it, which wasn't a big deal. It was the fact that I ordered it, reminded her, and still didn't get it right. Oh well. We'll be back for sure. Like I said. Ok, so I am not a fancy sushi eater. I do love and can appreciate a good hand roll or maki with nice fresh fish, crispy tempura, moist & creamy crabmeat and nice sticky rice though. Especially at good price. Sushiman's hand rolls are superb - still warm and crunchy shrimp tempura one, nicely moisturized with mayo crabmeat one, fresh ahi one, california roll with perfectly ripe, yet firm avocado... Oh, and their makis... My bf loves their spicy ahi maki. Only thing I'd change is soy sauce, low sodium Kikkoman is so much better with sushi than the original one. I had the tiger maki and the dynamite maki a while back. Their maki rolls are descent, even though they use what seems to be hard, old rice. But just recently I ordered a spider roll over the phone, among other things. When I get there, I check my order and see that the spider roll is missing. They said they ran out! Why the heck didn't they tell me over the phone?! Anyway, I ordered a fresh salmon roll instead. All I get is 1 measly hand roll rather than a maki roll. Wth! So I just gave up and left with whatever they gave me. So irritating! What's weird is the person who took my order on the phone spoke perfect English, but the people at the restaurant didn't know what I was saying! Where was this person that took my order?! So in short, don't go here for quality sushi. It's cheap, and you get what you pay for. Orders take a while, and it may be best to order in person if you have a big order that may be screwed up. read more

You will not find a better Dynamite Maki than at Sushi Man Makiki, don't even try. Their spicy ahi is perfectly coated and perfectly portioned, the tempura is remarkably crisp each and every time, and their sushi isn't made until you order it. The service is fine, the women are very friendly, and while they have a $10 credit card limit, they seldom actually enforce it. These guys make the best cheap maki in Honolulu and you're wasting your time going elsewhere. read more
