We ordered three bentos: 2 with sashimi and agedashi tofu in addition to one with gyoza and chicken teriyaki. Unfortunately, the tofu was sour-tasting so we had to throw it out. (Throwing away half of an entree for two bentos was quite disappointing especially when they cost almost $16 each. We also ordered two special chirashi, hamachi kama and oyako don. We received a stamp card for our $140+ purchase. However, I don't foresee returning again. Another place in SJ Japantown close to Roy's Station is our preferred destination. read more

This sushi restaurant is hard to miss in San Jose's Japantown because it's the dominant business on Jackson between 6th and 7th Streets. I had just finished walking through the Hakone Estate and Gardens and must've been in a Japanese mood for lunch. I drove here because frankly, I got a parking space right in front of it. They were providing just takeout service when I was there, but I figured I could find a bench nearby to have my meal. Yep, I was right. I went for the $18.95 Mix Sashimi Bento which turned out to be quite a feast in a compartmentalized box - three slices of tuna, three slices of sake (salmon), two slices of hamachi, and two slices of saba (mackerel) accompanied by a salad with miso dressing and little servings of sunomono, seaweed salad, and bean sprouts (photo: https://bit.ly/3zsAclu). But that wasn't all. There was a separate carton with chunks of grilled tuna (photo: https://bit.ly/38cOPh6), another carton filled up with white rice, and a cup of miso soup. I carried this wide load of food down the block past the busiest block in Japantown until I saw the sidewalk was becoming more sparsely populated, which was around 4th Street where I saw a wide bench in front of a closed Korean restaurant. I unwrapped my food and dove into my meal there. I enjoyed the bento quite a bit all by myself in that bench. 8/4/2021 Our boys love sushi rolls and we used to dine at both Sushi Maru locations often (Milpitas & Japantown). Since the Milpitas one closed (closer to our home), we've gone to the Japantown one much more often pre covid. We haven't been back for awhile and for tonight's dinner choice (one of our last residing in the city) - the kids wanted to come back one last time before moving. We were seated immediately, hearing the kids wanting to sit at the bar at entrance, you think they would tell us bar is not operating right? Nope. We sat at the table/bar and noticed it was empty and not operating. We reviewed the menu and started ordering. The table next to us was offered free ice cream at the end of their meal so our kiddos were chatting on about it. We ordered $130 worth of food from bento boxes, to rolls and appetizers and all rolls tasted as expected. Hubs got the bento box teriyaki sauce was thick and sweet but the beef itself was dry and lacked seasoning. The tempura was not given any tempura sauce and had a thick batter. the Pork cutlet was dry. My fav from here is still the seared salmon (Nanook). Melts in your mouth like buttaahhh but tonight the sauce was heavier than I remember so salty/sour after taste. Throughout dinner, we kept having pesky flies buzz around the food. We didn't finish all our rolls as they were annoying and we weren't even eating outdoors! We requested for check, didn't get offered ice cream and it took forever to give us the check and forever to pick up the cc on table so I walked it over to the cashier, tipped and left. Ambience appears much more run down than before. Service used to better, chefs used to greet you coming in and they would hustle from table to table. Tonight wasn't a packed night but staff wasn't as attentive, water glasses were empty and not filled, hard to flag down for napkins and sauce, and be prepared to wait for the check and to pay. I was recommended to this place by one of my teachers fron Japan. It is the best sushi and sushi rice in the area! The fish is very fresh and the sushi rice is perfectly seasoned. I would recommend the Chirashi Bowls, any sushi/nigiri, and the bento boxes. I recently moved to SF, and any time I come back down to SJ, it is a must-visit. I havent found my go-to spot, and this is still top 5 for sushi in the bay in my book. I seem to compare every sushi place i try to Sushi Maru because it is really that good. The bento boxes are big, especially if you get 3 items. The Mini Salmon Ikura Don is what I typically order, its small, but very delicious. I also will get Toro, Hamachi and the seared Salmon nigiri. We went for lunch on a Friday and was able to quickly get a table. We sat at the bar and placed orders with the sushi chef for sushi and fried appetizers with the waiter. We actually tried to order fried baby octopus, but I think the waiter misheard us and brought out fried whole shrimp. I really enjoy coming here for lunch, and visit pretty frequently with my aunt. We always order the sashimi lunch (now called the sashimi bento) which comes with sashimi, and my personal favorite the little side of braised fish that comes with it! For $20 you get a ton of high quality food and great service as well. We always get here right at 11:30am on a weekday when they open for lunch, because the lines can get long afterwards. This spot is a hidden gem among the local spots in Japantown. The restaurant itself is very warm and cozy, and you're greeted with lots of smiles. There's not a lot of revolving sushi spots around the bay so I appreciate that Sushi Maru still maintains their revolving belt. They have a lunch special which is $16.95 which includes 4 items, that's a real deal. It comes with a chirashi bowl, hamachi/tuna collar, soup, and salad. The quality of their fish is also really fresh and delicious. Their special sashimi is pretty good for $32, you don't see that price around the bay. The revolving belt has lots of variety that you can choose from, keep in mind it is priced by plate color. They display the pricing on the wall so you can use that as a guide. Sushi Maru is delightful, great food and quick service. There's a reason there's a line out the door to this place. It definitely takes a while to get a table here during dinner or on weekends. We waited almost 45 minutes for a table for two. They have a sushi conveyor belt with a selection of plates available if you're in a hurry to eat. The plates can slowly add up to almost the same as ordering individual rolls. Each conveyor built plate ranges from $6-9, I think they make great appetizers to share while you wait for their food. We ordered the bento and nigiri and loved the freshness of the fish and hot food. The bento was great value for money, salad, fresh tempura, sashimi and soup. We also ordered a few specials from the daily specials which were prepared fresh over the sushi counter, really enjoyed the experience overall. I will add though that this joint has a larger selection of California style sushi vs traditional rolls. Expect a lot of creative rolls with a multitude of flavors, a mix of spice and sweetness. My family has been coming to Sushi Maru for at least the past 10 years whenever we want Japanese food. My mom and I drove down to San Jose to grab lunch. Their menu in-person is way more extensive than their online menu, so if you have the time and want more of a selection, I recommend going in-person to order. My mom and I ordered 2 chirashi bowls, unagi roll, shrimp tempura rolls and a chicken teriyaki entree. We waited about 15-20 minutes so we just wandered around Japantown while we were waiting. We initially got the wrong order and realized we'd gotten the wrong order after checking the receipt that's on the outside of the bag so we returned it to Sushi Maru. We got our actual order and the staff gave us 20% off coupons that can be used Mondays through Thursdays. The staff packaged the chirashi, bento and sushi separately so that the hot food wasn't packed with the cold food so they have good attention to detail. The chirashi is pretty fresh and the box had so much chirashi! I wasn't expecting them to give us so much raw fish since some places skimp on the chirashi. The box had several kinds of fish, tamago, and seaweed salad. It truly was great value for the price. I would definitely recommend this place if you want good Japanese food. read more

Sushi Maru is located in a prime spot in the Japantown of San Jose. Being in a Japantown, I'd assume that the sushi would be phenomenal but alas Sushi Maru is just alright. What I do really enjoy is the staff and the ambiance! The staff is really friendly, and food comes out pretty quickly. You can ask for certain substitutions in rolls if you'd like and they try to accommodate, but not always. When the restaurant is busy, it has a fun vibe to it. Japantown has been quiet lately, and I really miss the old days! The sake here is pretty good and there are certain special rolls that are above par. I've found some of the salmon sashimi (which is my favorite) cuts to be a hit or miss. One time the salmon was absolutely fresh and decadent - the right amount of buttery bite to it with a hint of that fabulous salmon sweetness. The wasabi and soy sauce complements it so well! 3rd time at Sushi Maru for valentines dinner! It's my first time dining in, and we made reservation a week ahead to secure a seat. Highly recommend people to make reservation because they get very busy on the weekend. Special sushi is my go to dish. They change chief special every once a while. My favorite part is the fatty tuna in there. It's really melting in your mouth! Pick three combo is a great choice if you want to try out their appetizer like shrimp tempura and chicken Karaage. They provide high quality fish and no doubt it's my favorite sushi restaurant in the South Bay. I have one less star because we were charged for spicy mayonnaise for $0.75 without a heads up. Usually the chicken Karaage comes with Mayo sauce so I asked if I can get some mayo, but they gave us spicy mayo and charged us for it without disclosure it's cost. No issues with this one other than that one order was only 3 pieces! DRAGON ROLL: I noticed this roll was salty, but I didn't check to see which component was the culprit. I enjoyed another satisfying meal at Sushi Maru last weekend. We were in Japantown, so we decided to grab lunch here. During the pandemic, I've mostly ordered take-out, but we happily dined inside this time. We were seated quickly and our hostess was very attentive. My wife ordered the chicken karaage and sashimi bento and really enjoyed it. It came with a good amount of chicken karaage and several pieces of fresh sashimi. My son and I wanted sushi, so we decided to share the regular sushi lunch, a spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll and a caterpillar roll. I gave the miso soup to my son, which he "slurped-up" rather quickly. Our sushi lunch came with an 8 pieces of assorted fish and 3 pieces of California roll. All the sushi rolls were good-sized. These were larger than some other Japanese restaurants provide. The fish were fresh and tasted delicious. There was construction ongoing at 5th and Jackson, so parking wasn't readily available just outside the restaurant. However, there is plenty of parking close-by, so it wasn't an inconvenience at all.
