They've been open for about a year, and I'm not sure why this was only our first visit, but we had a great experience. This isn't your fancy date-night sushi spot, but it definitely feels like the kind of neighborhood staple families can come back to during the week. The interior is fun and well put together, and the menu has enough variety for different tastes and ages. They even have a few kid-friendly options, which isn't something you always find at sushi restaurants. One of the standouts for us was the smoked sashimi served on a salt rock. It was a fun presentation and tasted great. The sashimi in general was also cut very generously, with noticeably larger pieces than what we typically get at other sushi restaurants. I came here after seeing it recommended on Yelp and am happy to say that it lived up to expectations! I tried the funky rice-less Green Secret Roll (cucumber wrapped with salmon, tuna, imitation crab) which was fresh and yummy, the Mango Crunch Roll (like a spicy tuna with a piece of fresh mango with avocado and salmon) - also so good, and the combo tempura (2 shrimp + assorted veggies -- the good assortment with pumpkin and broccoli, not just onion lol). The service was good--the servers were very friendly and attentive, and our food came out pretty quickly after we ordered as well. We ordered two of the sashimi sampler alongside the hamachi lover roll. I liked the roll! The ratio of fish, rice, and avocado were great. The sashimi sampler, however, was a little disappointing. The presentation was a little awkward--long, thin cuts of fish folded up into little bowls and scattered with greens. 4 of the 6 pieces were seared, which I have never expected when ordering sashimi. The pricing was a little on the higher end of normal, and, while the food was decent, it doesn't outdo any of the other local sushi spots that I have visited in the area. The roll was ~$17 and the sashimi sampler nearly $18. Overall, I think Goku Sushi is a decent spot. If I'm nearby and craving sushi, it is definitely in the running, even if it isn't my first choice. We just recently started dining at Goku Sushi even though we live nearby and had always heard great things about it. Safe to say, this is officially our new go-to sushi spot! Everything we've had has been incredibly fresh, and we love that they serve real wasabi--it really elevates the experience. Our must-orders are the otoro nigiri, salmon miso fusion nigiri (our absolute favorite!), mango crunch roll, amaebi with the fried shrimp head, and the uni nigiri. The salmon miso fusion nigiri completely blew us away. Everyone at the table was awestruck after the first bite. And the uni deserves a special mention. We've had uni nigiri at plenty of other sushi restaurants where it's been just okay, but the uni here was an absolute showstopper: fresh, creamy, sweet, and without any unpleasant aftertaste. The quality of the fish, attention to detail, and consistency have been outstanding every visit. I came here end of December for my friend's birthday. She chose this place, so we decided to give it a try. We went on a weekday, so there wasn't a lot of customers when we arrived. We weren't too hungry so we decided to order and share food. We got the lion king, mango crunch, a cream cheese roll, house salad, raw oysters and beer. Our favorite rolls here ended up being the mango crunch and the lion king roll. The lion king roll is baked and is flavorful. It was comparable to cha cha sushi's for us. The mango crunch was another favorite because my boyfriend and friend said they could valley taste the mango in there unlike when we go to other sushi restaurants. My friend and I enjoyed the raw oysters, but my boyfriend didn't like it because he said he could taste the sea water from it. I ended up eating his since I couldn't taste what he was tasting haha. Wow. Just incredibly underwhelming & disappointing visit. Having been to Goku multiple times (and loving it every time) I was excited to show my family this place. The rolls were underwhelming and nothing to rave home about. The worst part about the meal was definitely the Sashimi. All the fish looked discolored and tasted old. Goku Sushi opened up in our hometown of Morgan Hill and just opened up this new location in South San Jose. Ambiance was inviting and friendly with good decor. The rolls were reasonably priced considering we frequent a lot of sushi restaurants not just in the Bay Area but also out of state. The Baked Rolls were $13.95, which is way less expensive than other sushi restaurants and the flavors were very delicious. Came in on a Monday around 6:30 PM with a party of five and were seated immediately. We ordered the Lion King Roll, Dragon Roll, Mango Crunch Roll, and the Sashimi Special. Unfortunately, the sashimi was by far the worst I've ever been served at a restaurant. The fish appeared discolored, old, and slimy. When we asked our server what types of fish were included, we were told tori, salmon, albacore, yet the almost every piece (minus the salmon) had a brownish-gray appearance that was extremely unappetizing. I'm not sure if we happened to receive the last of their inventory for the week, but serving fish in that condition at full price ($60) is kind of crazy. Some of the sashimi looked comparable to raw pork that had been sitting out, which was honestly concerning. The sushi rolls were also disappointing. They were very average, with flavors and quality that reminded me of grocery store sushi. Nothing stood out or justified the price point. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. I was especially let down because this restaurant came highly recommended by a family member who has dined here multiple times and always had positive experiences. To make matters worse, I developed stomach discomfort within about 15 minutes of leaving the restaurant. Picked the place for the name and the ratings compared to others in the area with 3.5 stars. Ordered a chicken teriyaki bento online, totaling me $17.99 after tax. The wait was minimum 35min from the time of ordering. Now, I've never had a bad bento from any joint, but I guess today was that day. I came in 10minutes before my order was due just to check in on it, but it was already ready in the window. My food was not hot and I was already skeptical. By the time I got back to the office from the 6min drive, all of the food was no longer warm. I never received a notification that my food was ready and have no clue as to how long it had been sitting. But look, if the taste was still good, I can look past it. The amount of chicken was very measly and had near no color. It was incredibly dry, easily the worst chicken I've had from over 20 years of eating chicken teriyaki bentos. It may have been the ONLY bad one I've ever had, because how do you mess that part up?? The gyoza was cold and the 4pc California roll was small compared to bentos in other eateries and tasted way too sharp. The miso soup actually tasted nice, but they didn't even fill it up that much. I think I've only experienced one other time where the place skimped on the miso soup and that place is closed now. Even the dressing for the salad they filled the container very little. It was a wild experience to be honest. It was one bad note or component after another, I had to just laugh at the situation. I'd say skip this place and order elsewhere. The last time I went here, I thought the food was subpar compared to other places. However I gave it another go when I was in the area. I tried the chicken teriyaki plate and it was delicious! The food was fresh and tasted amazing, I especially liked the California rolls. I felt like the place definitely improved a lot since I went there. The place was clean and well-kept. Funny enough, there were Goku figures at Goku Sushi. There were many decorations and the windows allowed for lots of sunlight, giving it a calm vibe. The customer service was also very friendly.
