The fish was nice and soft in these three dishes and super tasty. The hamachi lover roll and the sunflower roll were solid, but some of the fish in the middle was a bit chewy. They are super generous with the fish though! The chicken curry was definitely a bang for your buck but the carrots were really undercooked. Now for what I think could be improved! The tuna nigiri and sashimi was really stringy, stiff, and didn't taste super fresh. I also think that the red snapper sashimi had the same issue. Overall, I would be back to try more rolls because they are so affordable! I'd recommend this for sushi on a budget, also considering it's conveniently located right across from San Jose state. The Spicy Girl Roll had a nice kick to it, but for me it wasn't too spicy since I enjoy really spicy food. If you're more sensitive to spice, it might feel a bit spicy for you. Both rolls tasted good, and the price was very reasonable. For around $20, I was already full, so I think it's definitely worth the price. The restaurant itself is small and doesn't have a lot of seating, but the staff worked quickly. The atmosphere was nice and not too loud. When I went in the evening, the place was pretty full, but luckily people were still able to find seats and no one had to wait when I was there. This was everyone's favorite of the night. White Dragon Roll - 7/10 - Not bad, just a little on the heavier side with the shrimp tempura and sauces. It's good though! Salmon Lover Roll - 8/10 - Not what I typically go for, but my friend ordered it and I was pleasantly surprised! Usually for Salmon, I love ordering nigiri or sashimi, but this was pretty good! What I really like about this spot is how affordable it is, too. I think it's smart considering that it's right across from SJSU (perfect for college students who want to stretch a dollar). My friend and I came here after going to the SJ Friend Fest and wanted something close by and saw Sumi Sushi. It was my first time here so I wasn't sure what to expect but I like it a lot. I think the pricing for a roll were pretty good, especially for the portion sizes. The rolls were pretty big, we ended up with basically 2 rolls to take home. My favorite was the Hawaiian Roll, I never had a sushi roll with pineapple before, but it was an interesting and delicious combination. The sweetness from the pineapple paired really well with the salmon. We also got a free roll (the White Dragon Roll) Which you can only get if you spend over $60. You order with a QR code and the at the end you can use it to call the server to pay too. The space is a bit small so I noticed a lot of people were doing takeout instead of dining in. You can order at your table via QR code or with the waitstaff. I ordered via QR code and my food was served fast. Friendly waitstaff as well. If you're hankering for a traditional roll like Dragon, Spider, Unagi, etc. they have that too as well as some specialty rolls. Glad that Sumi Sushi opened here as the closest Japanese restaurant is in Japantown which is a 20-minute walk from City Hall. I was going to give this place three stars for the sushi/sashimi, but then I went to the bathroom and it was filthy. I'm assuming the high ratings can be attributed to the short distance to SJSU campus and people eating over-dressed sushi rolls. However, the quality of the fish does not reflect the ratings. We had the ten piece sashimi, some nigiri, edamame and tea. Unfortunately, the fish was watery and several pieces of fish were very stringy. Even the scallop nigiri was watery and that had Mayo on it. Fish was fresh, as in not to worry about food poisoning, but everything just tasted okay. The jasmine tea tasted soapy. Best thing were the sake and the chopsticks, both very smooth! Toilets were gross! Especially for a day that is very slow according to the wait staff. So, not a repeat place. read more

The prices here for nigiri and chirashi are fantastic, would definitely come back for a quick bite. It's all self service so it was super quick and simple, the food came out really quick too! However, the one thing I was really disappointed about was the Big Blue Ocean Roll, which was supposed to be a bluefin tuna roll. However I paid 18.95 for it and the portion size was good for the price, but the roll did not look or taste like bluefin to any degree and the quality was more like grocery store shiny and stringy tuna :( It also had a "house sauce" drizzle that turned out to just be unagi sauce (each to their own but I can't eat it because of the sweetness) and it completely overpowered the little flavor the bluefin tuna had. I genuinely wonder if this was mix-up of fish? I really don't want to be picky or sound like a b*tch writing this review but that was the only thing that really brought down the experience and it felt like a waste of my money :( To be honest, I wish I could get a refund if possible but it's totally understandable if I cannot :( The nigiri was fantastic though, I will definitely be coming back! My Japenese dad commented on the perfect texture of the sushi rice in the chirashi he ordered and loved the taste of the sashimi. The 8 pieces of sashimi consisted of salmon, tuna, bonito, and hamachi (yellowtail) along with tamago, ikura (salmon roe), and a quail egg for the deluxe version. My mom ordered the vegetable ramen (vegetarian) and chose miso as the soup base (tonkotsu pork bone broth and shoyu were the other two options). I tried a bit of the miso soup base and it was very rich! I ordered the Salmon Lover roll (salmon inside and outside) and a 2-pc unagi nigiri. These were delicious and refreshing! My dad was also impressed by the taste of the unagi. At the moment, there's a special running until October 31 - buy $60 worth of food and get a free Dragon roll! This spot is a favorite of mine. Parking is not too bad even though it's in downtown. There is a parking garage right next door and Sumi Sushi offers 90 minutes parking validation for it. The staff are very sweet and welcoming. The shop is on the smaller side, but there is generally not a wait on a weekday evening. They offer QR code ordering at tables or a tablet by the door to order to go. I generally order their Chirashi (pictured) and a salmon hand roll. The fish is cut well, the salmon specifically is so so buttery. The hand roll is PACKED with salmon. Even their rice is nicely flavored.
