I come here pretty frequently but today was actually the first time I had a bad experience. Considering I work as a bartender and server who's been through Restaurant week in high end places where we serve many like Gordon Ramsey, drake...etc so I understand what it's like so I'm pretty lenient and honest and respectful. But today It all went downhill once my sister pointed out our cups were extremely dirty and had things floating inside when we got there. I let our server("Aganelia", I don't think that it is his name but that's what the check said) know so he may replace our drinks. From the on, he did not come to check on us or anything, no mannerisms, which really sucks cause I was boasting this place to my sister as the best. We were not even there for about 30 mintues(about 15 minutes our food was brought out) and he came and asked for boxes and already had the check. Very disappointing and for someone who comes pretty frequently I don't know if I should come back. This server has served me plenty of times but this was a first, as he rarely speaks. Two weeks ago my check was wrong and I was charged for all my rolls even tho the had their special. They did not fix it at all and still charged me as is. This time I was completely rushed, which I live a tad over an hour away. We ended up disappointed and didn't drink our waters. Ordered spider roll, there was no sight of soft shell crab in there and the cucumber was so bitter. There was 5 in the pieces with mainly lettuce in there, couldn't bring myself to finish the roll so I made my husband finish it. Also ordered the eel and cucumber roll which was served on the same plate as the spider roll, which was weird. The cucumber in there was also very bitter so my daughter couldn't even it eat. The three of us just ended up sharing the kutsu chicken plate. They also didn't get our dragon roll out until we was done so we just pack it to go. Drove 1 and 1/2 hour just to eat there. 9 of us came to this hibachi restaurant to celebrate my friend's child's 7th birthday. We called and told them that we would be there by 1:15 pm to ensure that they were okay with the timing. When we arrived at 1:20 pm, the hibachi table was not ready (piles of dirty dishes, used napkins, left over foods on the table and on the floor, etc.) while there was no customers inside at all. The waiter saw us walk in, he slowly walked to the hibachi table and tried to put all the dirty dishes away and clean the table. We waited for about 10 minutes before we were able to seat at the hibachi table. Another waitress saw us, however, no greeting at all. I did not feel welcoming in this place. We finally sat down and placed our hibachi order. The chef came relatively quickly, but he was not entertaining at all. He did minimal tricks and it was quiet disappointing. The hibachi lunch was okay, just saw the chef put lots of soy sauce to make fired rice. The chef gave us lots of fired rice and reasonable amount of shrimps and steak for our hibachi order. They had buy 2 rolls get one free and never bothered to mention this when we ordered 2 rolls and hibachi dinners. Furthermore. They ILLEGALLY charge customers 3% transaction fee if you pay with credit card! Every visa, AE, MC contract specifically outlines they cannot charge customers the transactions fees they are charged by visa, AE, MC. I know the laws and contracts for any business that accepts credit cards- they are illegally charging every customer another 3% transaction fee and then they tax it! Read the bottom of your bill/receipt before you pay. I told them they could not charge me their service fees and explained it was illegal and the waitress rudely snapped back, "it's not illegal!" Then grabbed my card and went and charged it anyway with the fees. I crossed off the incorrect total and wrote the correct amount on the receipt and a statement of "I refuse to pay your service fees you agreed to & have a legally binding contract that specifies you will pay visa for the privilege of accepting their credit cards, nor will I pay you taxes on your illegal transaction fees." I photographed the receipts for any dispute I have to file with my cc if they don't adjust the charges. I'm not cheap and we tip very well, but this really infuriated me. it's simply not legal and a complete insult to their customers. *Tokyo 77 EAST Side. We have been to this restaurant with my family of 8 Plus multiple times a year. We celebrate Christmas Eve there ever since the East side location opened. We celebrate every birthday, every promotion every SINGLE celebration each year THERE! Our bill is always extreme but this is where we choose to celebrate all of our families celebrations as it makes everyone happy. Last night my two daughters went to celebrate fully dressed up like Prom. (One of my girls is disabled and can not go to the bathroom alone. )They ate their meal asked for to go boxes and went to the bathroom as both had to go as one needed to make sure the other was going to be okay. They came back and their food was thrown away. They asked for a manager who brought them a box clearly out of the garbage with grease and noodles on it. And said the other box could not be found. They refused to remake the roll. They are young took the box and left upset. I called today and the manager told me that 1 she didn't have time to check the cameras as they were busy and 2 the cameras don't show everywhere so she knows they could not see it IF it happened. They would not replace the roll as there was nothing wrong with the food. I know my $1,000 plus a year is NOTHING to a big business but to our large family it is a LOT and to not replace one roll and to give my children a box out of the garbage is appealing and awful customer service. We will NEVER be back and we hope that this review deters others also. The other Tokyo's are owned by different owners choose one that cares about their customers and will not hand them something out of the trash and ONE Roll would be remade. I called the other Tokyo's in town and one even offered to remake the roll bc they would be upset too...THAT IS customer service we will not take them up on the roll but will be giving our money who is customer service friendly. I enjoyed the food here however they didn't offer me any mayonnaise. I watch a fellow customer consume ketchup by the handful so it must have been good. perhaps I will try it myself on my next visit! What sets this place apart is the time it takes between you server's visit. It really gives you time to look at the alluring decor. The wait is more than worth it though for the quality. For midwest sushi its surprisingly fresh. Unfortunately the miso soup was not the best. The menu should be updated though. while ordering drinks a few things were not available. Sad. I ordered the salmon hibachi and my boyfriend ordered the tuna hibachi. This comes with clear onion soup and a salad, and then fried rice, veggies, and the meat of your choice all cooked on the grill right in front of you. The man who cooked the food was funny and entertaining, but showed so much craftsmanship! It was truly a pleasure to watch. The food was AMAZING, and I can't wait to go again! I'm new to town and had ordered takeout from this place a few times even though the food was pretty mediocre. I kept ordering the steak more and more rare hoping to receive something with even a slight shade of pink, but even ordered rare came out very well done. It would probably help if they didn't chop everything into tiny pieces that clearly cook too quickly. Soft shell crab app was fishy. Lobster was overcooked. Pepper tuna was weird. Wouldn't really recommend the sushi either but I guess this area isn't really a spot for that so my mistake I guess. I gave them a lot of chances but the deal breaker is when I added shrimp and steak to my twin lobster hibachi meal and they changed the price without telling me to the price of additional full entrees for each protein and gave me extra entrees that I didn't order when I was very clear about what I wanted. This was our third time having Hibachi but our first time here at Tokyo. This is closer to home so we thought we'd give it a try. THAT A MISTAKE. Floors were slippery - not sure if this was oil or grease but they were definitely not scrubbed. There was a weird film on the tables similar to the floors I'm sure had I touched the to confirm. Waiter was very quiet. Hard to hear/understand. Hair covered his eye so I didn't even know he was looking at me when it was my turn to order. Hibachi .... We ordered 3 chicken meals and another party at our grill had Steak and Shrimp. I've had Hibachi before and have never been nearly smoked out of my chair. And the film that covered my glasses by the end was AWFUL. the following day I am still washing them to remove it. Food was decent as far as taste goes but compared to my other Hibachi experience the quality and quantity was very poor. Waiter never refilled soda or checked to see how the meal was. UPDATED: I should elaborate on this now that the hell night is over. First visit there (old owners) - i give 7 stars! was a perfect experience, perfect food, the most fun you can have with a group out to eat. period. Second visit - decided, since first was so amazing, to bring my family... New owner, Hibachi chef we had really, i mean REALLY did not want to be there. He was boring, no fun, and had to be prodded at the end to squirt a little sake in our faces to liven things up. But the moral of this story boils down to a complete breakdown from Owners/Managers on down. Hostess was the most rude I have ever imagined. Rude to my family and myself on multiple encounters. Their credit card machines were down, only because they decided (or needed) to re-submit paperwork to the company that runs them - which takes time, not overnight.. but that didn't bother me. 1 hr. to get a drink. The wait staff that was there, She (singular) was great, she got our orders right, especially considering there were 12 demanding customers after some some drinks. The food this time was just so-so. we Did have a Foxy Lady sushi roll, which was awesome, and created 3 new sushi lovers just because of it. We sprung for the Full thing, Filet, Lobster, Scallops - the works. Lobster was not great, and surprisingly the Chicken was the winner! Chef undercooked the scallops, Ran out of Scallops, and when you have to order 2 drinks at a time, just to ensure you have them, it really ruins what could have been a great experience. I shared my frustration with new owner and confronted the Hostess about the attitude. I don't care how busy your restaurant is, there's no excuse for the rude, and lack of service we were shown. This is the NEW TRENDY place to go out to eat, and based on the reputation the other Tokyo locations have (STELLAR!!) - New Owners beware not to run your customers out of town... and keep in mind, Fuji Hibachi is opening soon, and I hear those of the owners that run a tight ship. Was pleasantly surprised with this Japanese restaurant find it in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I have lived in major cities on either coast and spent most of my time around those areas, so I do not know much about the cuisine offered in the middle of the country. I am a big fan of Asian cuisine, and was pleasantly surprised with the offerings and quality! They had a dinner special of ordering two rolls and receiving a third for free. I cannot eat three rolls, but I gave it the old college try anyway. Which I wound up having to force my dad to eat a few pieces. My first visit here, it has nice interior design and clean. Though I didn't appreciate the service I got from the manager/owner and policies. We got sushi instead of hibachi at a mutual gathering. They got our sushi order incorrect and had to take it back after raw sushi plate was sitting with us for 20mins; they modified and took out the incorrect ones, and then brought it back. It's also ridiculous that they made a coupon that I couldn't use because other people at the hibachi table used a coupon. They said I couldn't used it cause there was limit per table. I had spend over a subtotal of $60 for two and still couldn't used a coupon; while they knew they had my order incorrect. What difference would it have been if I have ordered $60 worth of sushi across the room and not sit at the hibachi table. Would I still been able to use their coupon?! For paying that much and not get great quality of service, I'm upset. If I had known how incompetent the manager/owner is, I wouldn't have came just for sushi. read more

We we're asked if we preferred "hibachi seating" or "regular seating. Since we had zero information on the "hibachi" seating, we chose to be seated in the "general" section. Our waitress came to the table almost 15 minutes after we arrived. We ordered. My food was delivered after about a 20 minute wait -- but my wife's food didn't come. The waitress said "it'll be out in a minute" .... well, the "minute" turned into 15+ minutes. Meanwhile we shared my order. It was fairly good. this place literally sucks. i was there with family, and it wasn't busy at all. they took over 15 minutes to bring out one sushi roll, and it was dry? the waitress spent more time talking to her friend and standing at the counter while looking at us. the fish isn't fresh, the place had dead flies on the window sills next to the plates on the tables, and just overall it was subpar. no true gluten free menu, so don't believe that. the manager told me my concerns were wrong and the waitress told the manager i was exaggerating. horrible service, terrible food, and rude people. samauri is wayyyyyy better. read more

We asked for the check and gave our cards right away and 20 minutes later we still hadn't heard anything. Food was horrible. Our waiter was decent. Floors were gross and sticky. I'm not into the whole hibachi thing and ordered chicken teriyaki. I told the hibachi chef I didn't want any of the sauce they squirt, or any broccoli to be flung to me, but he didn't listen and it got all over my clothes. The lettuce in my salad was dripping wet with water. When my meal came they didn't bring a knife (definitely necessary and shouldn't have needed to ask for one). By the time I could get someone's attention my food was cold. It got more disappointing from there. Flavor was not good. The teriyaki just tasted like soy sauce and onions. My Chicken was over cooked, tough, and dry. Vegetables were totally undercooked. My white steamed rice was the only thing right about my experience here. Extremely disappointed.
