I love the thick fish cut on the nigiris. Fish is so fresh. Love the ika geso i wish the portion was bigger. Lots of fish inside the handrolls as well. Some seating inside, you can even sit right in front of the chefs!

My husband and I came here for a date night tonight, and we had an amazing experience! Everything was absolutely delicious, the service was great and the restaurant was spotlessly clean. The atmosphere is so pleasant and welcoming. We are already looking forward to our next visit! Highly recommend.

Great sushi spot in Ahwatukee! Clean restaurant, friendly staff, and a fun view of the sushi chefs in action. Watching them prepare the dishes was a highlight. They also have a YouTube award for Life of a Sushi Chef, haven't watched yet, but thought it was worth noting. Their hours are limited (Tuesday-Sunday from 4:30pm-9pm) so would recommend for happy hour or a date night!

Nice service: a wet towelette with the chopsticks.

First time at Sushi Nakano. I arrived at 12:30 on a Friday and it was half full. The restaurant was located next to Trader Joe's. I ordered the lunch bento box, which had a few choices. I got the mixed tempura and the Cali roll but with spicy tuna. It came with miso soup and a salad, plus rice. Pretty standard bento box. It came to $20.63 plus tip. My soup arrived in less than five mins and was the standard miso soup, with tofu and scallions. My bento box came about seven mins later. The salad was a bit odd. I couldn't tell what the dressing tasted like. It wasn't sesame, nor miso or ginger. It was good, just didn't know. The Cali roll a nice size, with eight pieces. The tempura was the highlight for me, but probably because I love onions so much. There was one prawn, one green bean and three onions. It was tender, fresh and very delicate. Also on the plate, next to the steamed rice, was a tiny seaweed salad. I mixed it with my rice and really enjoyed it. Service was very pleasant, efficient and thorough, even though she was the only one. Definitely a return trip upcoming.

This place is super cute! The sushi box is a good amount of food for dinner (and delicious), it came with a salad and soup. The service was wonderful and the employees were very sweet.

Amazing quality in food and service, despite how busy it can get! I would say that expanding the location to more than a couple of tables in a small building space could help with the wait times, but truly, something about the smaller and more intimate space maintains the quality treatment you feel as a customer while dining in. We went on a Friday evening at around 6, and had to wait about 30 minutes, but it was so worth it. The waitresses do it all and keep a respectful approach to their work, while the sushi chefs are clearly passionate about the presentation and quality of their food. Highly recommend to anyone in the Ahwatukee area looking for fresh quality fish and creative rolls!

I was celebrating a new job and knew this would be the perfect place to celebrate with my family. We were not let down! Sushi Nakano has undergone a remodel/refresh recently. It is a classic but modern Japanese sushi restaurant. Impeccably clean and bright. The staff are kind and welcoming. They are responsive and helpful. They give you plenty of space to enjoy your meal but are prompt should anything be required. The food is the true star. A more limited menu but with high quality ingredients and the fish is some of the freshest you will find in Phoenix. The rolls are perfect for sharing. The temaki (hand rolls) were substantial and a great addition for our meal. We ended our meal with the Raijan (i think i spelled that right). It was an elevated Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna. Honestly my favorite bite of food I have had in a long time. If you are in the area, please pop in. If you're not, make the trip. I love this place and it feels so special to have here.

Recognized as one of the Best in Phoenix for 2023!! A must try for sure!! Very intimate restaurant, just the way they are in Japan! Small and cozy! High quality sushi. The Chef is from Tokyo and gets all his fish shipped right from Japan. Rare fishes to have specific specials for those that ask. Definitely worth it all. He even did a little demonstration on Stonefish for us. He knew it was our first time. The chefs are very clean, they washed hands in between each roll when switching fish. The sake was yummy! They typically have specials and only open specific hours of the day. Keep that in mind. Both chefs were extremely nice! Totally worth it we will be returning. The server was nice, she was on it and the only one for the entire restaurant. Love the extra touch if the wet wipe. If you know you know!!

THE BEST. No notes. No, but really. If you think there is a better sushi restaurant in the valley than Sushi Nakano, you are simply wrong. Nothing beats this place. From the food to the service to the ambiance... everything made up for the most perfect experience. I never thought that my all-time favorite spot for sushi would be in Phoenix, but I've been twice already and I absolutely loved each time! This is my boyfriend and I's go-to spot every time he's visiting back in Arizona. We always try to make time to stop here and indulge in a few nigiri pieces and handrolls. Each time, we had the pleasure of being served by both Chef Janet and Chef Leo, the sweetest couple. We always sit at the bar just so we can engage in conversation with the chefs, you learn a lot about their history and work such as the interesting and unique techniques they use. Chef Leo actually uses a traditional barrel aged soy sauce, which can take up to a few years to make. The first time we came, Chef Janet kindly crafted us her favorite handroll for dessert to try - a tamago handroll with a sweet soy based sauce that was soft and heavenly. The fish itself is incredible. My favorite has to be the salmon belly with ume ponzu. I swear my body started to float and 20 years were added to my lifespan after having this perfect bite. A few other things I loved: unagi, toro, any of the handrolls! They have a bay scallop one that is extremely creamy and salmon cucumber that is so fresh. I want to try everything on their menu, you really can't go wrong with any of the options. It seems like they have quite a few regulars as they greet each guest with such familiarity. The customers already know off the top of their head what they want, and the chefs deliver. We made a mental note to order a few of their popular sushi rolls the next time we dine here - they look so pretty and delicious. There's also the sweetest waitress that rushes to open the door for you! The fish is also quite affordable - especially for how high quality everything is. They pack each handroll with a generous amount of fish. They do not skimp. The total for two people would come out to be a little less than $100 without tip, and we would leave feeling full! We will continue to stay true and loyal to Sushi Nakano forever. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality and keep up the amazing work!

Hands down one of the best sushi restaurants in the valley. I've visited many and none of them come close. It's a go to date night spot and certainly a hidden gem. The owner is almost always there and recognizes us. Small but mighty team, quaint space, and high quality food. Really all you can ask for in a solid restaurant.

Ahwatukee got a new sushi place! It's tiny and I have a feeling it's more of an omakase type place but they did have a nice lunch menu. I had the spicy tuna bowl (donburri?) and it was good. I can't remember what Dan or Sarah H had, probably a lot of salmon. I can't say it was outstanding, but it was definitely good and I'll eat here again. read more

I went here for the first time today, for lunch. I have been looking for a good sushi place since moving here from the North East a few months ago. This place is small but don't let that fool you, it's fantastic! Everything was fresh and well prepared. Miso soup, tuna sashimi, 3 different rolls, calamari & pot stickers.... all were great! Finally made it to try this place and it was worth it! It's a small restaurant, but with a big sushi bar (which is my favorite place to sit in a sushi joint). We started with a couple of beers, and they have the basic Japanese beers. We started with the Hamachi kama (yellowtail collar). I LOVE that they have collar on their regular menu. It's such a delicious dish and it was done so well! I was craving some veggies so we also got some tempura which was very tasty. We ordered a bunch of different nigiri from the menu. Every piece was great! I think my favorite was the hamachi. It was simply done but incredible. We then finished off with a chef's choice dish. It was creative and had a great progression of flavors. This is definitely some of the best sushi in the city! read more

I am kind of a sushi maniac and was having a big craving for it while in Chandler for work. This place did not disappoint. Had lunch here two days in a row, it was that good. Sushi in the desert is almost a contradiction, but it was very fresh and delicately prepared with an artful eye. You know the place is great when they don't drown the fish in sauces, but instead let it speak for itself. Fresh, ground wasabi root (which most places don't even carry) and a great selection of items. Order the Amaebi. Best, BEST, fried heads I've ever eaten. I devoured everything, so this was the only picture I took. Totally recommend this place! read more

Friendly, great pacing of dishes. Beautiful presentation and absolutely delicious. Can't wait to return!! I would give 5 stars other than they have such an authentic menu and it was difficult for all four of us to understand some of the rolls we ordered as they are unusual a printed description would help. Even asking 2 generations still didn't know exactly what we're eating compared to the tickets we completed. The sashimi was top notch with a fabulous presentation. We will definitely return to this small gem!!!! read more

Last night we had a very mesmerizing AllMaKaShe sashimi dinner last night prepared by Chef Leo, who is the son of our years-loved Hiro San In Scottsdale! Chef Leo has definitely cracked the code of the traditional Japanese traditional Japanese way of serving sashimi that we have absolutely adored! If you not a wasabi fan but want to enjoy really good & fresh sashimi, there you go! Various fresh sashimi/oyster met their soul seasoning that would just leave your pallet screaming for more! This is one of my first "fancy" sushi experiences. I'm no sushi connoisseur, usually the fanciest I get is getting the sashimi plate and only eating mostly the salmon. I was nice getting the Omakase or the chef's choice and letting someone else decide, so im forced to try new things. The fish was very fresh and there was a good spectrum of flavor in sushi terms. The only concern was some of the nigri was too heavy handed on the wasabi. This is definitely an experience for a special occasion, the price at the end of the night was pretty hefty since you don't really know what you're gonna get until you get the check; abeit it was cheaper than ordering everything a la carte. read more

I reviewed Sushi Nakano on Facebook but I definitely need to put it on yelp. If you want the most fresh and authentic sushi in AZ then make the move! Get there early because it is small and typically busy but they are worth every minute. I recommend the tootsie roll, rainbow roll and the fried rice patty thing with spicy tuna on it (I think it's called the Raijin). Grab a beer and watch the chef work his sushi magic! No lie .... my family of four (includes my 9 and 12 year old) came 4 times in two weeks. read more

The best sushi in Arizona. Been to Sakana, Ra, Kyoto, even to Hiro (Leo's dad) and this is the best. Amazing "Japanese Tapas" to start; fabulous nigiri and rolls, but the pièce de résistance is the sashimi omakase. Sit at the bar, watch masters at work, be transported to culinary heaven. I was pretty disappointed with this place, particularly given the strong yelp reviews. The price was very reasonable (just a little bit higher than supermarket sushi) but the flavor was, sadly, only slightly better than supermarket quality as well. I should really give up on trying to find good sushi in Arizona. read more

I don't have enough adjectives to describe this place. It was so amazing. Due to staffing shortages, seating is very limited. It's a small restaurant anyway, but the current dine in seating is just the sushi bar. This was so much fun. Our party of four came right after they opened and we asked if it would be possible to have the chef's choice menu, OMAKASE. We ordered some appetizers (as he was busy making food for other customers) but he said he would do it for us. Honestly, I do not remember what we had (as there were several courses) some traditional, some newer and non traditional pieces. There were definitely things I have never had before nor would have ever ordered before as I usually order the same things when I go out for sushi. Of course, some of the pieces were Chef Leo's own creations which were just so delicious. Everything was top notch, 10/10. Each member of the party was blown away with the food. Now, don't expect to walk out with the sensation that your belly is going to burst, that's not really the goal here. We were all very, very happy. My only regret is that I don't live in the state of Arizona so I can come here more often. Looks like i have to plan another trip sometime in the near future so I can come back. read more

YESSS!!!! Finally!!! A legit sushi place in the East Valley! Outstanding, authentic sushi. The nigiri with HOUSE MADE SOY SAUCE was incredible...salmon, yellowtail and snapper. Worth the trip alone. Also try the eggplant miso (nasu miso) appetizer...so tasty. Everyone was super nice and the place is cute too. Tiny joint by Trader Joe's in Ahwatukee. Can't wait to return!!! read more

If you want traditional Japanese sushi, this is the place to go. Watching Leo artfully mold the rice and fish, was as satisfying as the tastes and textures of his creations. It really is a shame that the average person, can't, and usually refuses to, appreciate traditional sushi, and must give everything a soy bath. As Wags so eloquently put it, "it is already precisely sauced." Another nice touch is the sushi etiquette guide; A must-read for anyone who likes sushi, and for those thinking they're sushi aficionados, yet cringe when someone uses their fingers to eat sushi. read more

I was visiting my family in town and saw this cute Japanese restaurant opened up and decided to give it a try with my sister. We sat at the sushi bar and both my sister and I were feeling adventurous so we decided to ask for the chef's pick to have our chef picks whatever for us. We're definitely surprised and pleased with our decision! All the dishes were like an art display! Not only the dishes were pleasing to the eyes but they pleasing to my taste buds too!!! The quality of the sashimi here are very good! The servers here are super nice and attentive too! They're very friendly and made sure we're always taken care of. My sister and I had a great time and we enjoyed our meal a lot!!! Overall we had a fantastic experience so I definitely would recommend it to my friends AND will make sure I come back next time when I'm in town! read more

Hands down the best sushi I've had!! Our friends invited us, and I'm so glad they did! My husband loves sushi and he was like a kid in a candy store. Sushi is fresh, presentation is beautiful and the variety is amazing!! We had the 15 course meal, and we had it all. One of my favorites was the tuna cheek. Leo and Janet were friendly. This is Leo's art, and Janet makes the experience personal. Server was super nice too. Can't say enough. If you like real sushi, not CA rolls, but real sushi, this is your place!! read more

Small restaurant with a sushi bar and a couple of tables. They're really authentic (compared to most other sushi places in the area) and offer a small but quality selection of nigiri and sushi rolls. Prices are high but pretty reasonable given the quality, and service is friendly and attentive. I forget the exact names of the sushi rolls we tried, but I really enjoyed both. One had an assortment of raw fish wrapped in cucumber, and another was a langostino roll topped with avocado and seared tuna. read more

Finally, Japan-quality sushi in the East Valley....so fed up with the stuff that passes for sushi here (basically, slap a piece of fish on bad rice and call it sushi). Had the omakase and boy, was it terrific--you'd be paying twice or three times as much for the same quality in LA or NYC. Worth the splurge. Something for everyone here too...if you like those crazy roll things, then they have you covered. And the appetizers all looked really interesting. read more

Leo Nakano got his start in sushi around 14 years old gaining his reputation at his father's North Scottsdale restaurant the well known and respected Hiro Sushi. We asked our waiter a few questions about a few of their rolls and he was very helpful with guidance and recommendations. We ordered Salmon Lemon, Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado Maki and California rolls to share for two. This restaurant uses purple rice rather than traditional white rice. This was the first time we have tried a sushi roll made with purple rice and we both loved it. It added a nutty flavor and hearty texture. Purple rice is similar to wild rice and far nutritionally superior to white rice with more antioxidant and fiber. Shortly after we ordered we were served a potsticker dish. I mentioned that we did not order the item and were informed the appetizer was complementary. We thanked the server and tasted the dish. The potstickers were nicely pan fried and had a great crust and flavorful chicken filling. Delicious! About five minutes later our rolls were delivered. All were fresh tasting and delicious. Our favorite was the Salmon Lemon roll. We loved the pop the lemon added. Honorable mentions to the Spicy Tuna roll, very well done, excellent balance of heat and flavors. I do wish that they would've tossed the pasta in the same sauce the rib came in before adding it to the red pasta sauce. The pasta sauce itself lacked flavor and just tasted like blended down tomatoes. If the pasta had a scoop of the rib sauce too, that would be absolutely insane!! For dessert we didn't have a choice and it was just the miso caramel cheesecake. Now that is some of the best cheesecake I've had in an incredibly long time. I don't taste the miso flavor in the caramel besides the salty sweetness of it but that combo was perfect, especially with the homemade candied pecans. I don't know if the cheesecake was left out or purposefully like that but I love how when the cheesecake was served it wasn't cold! Usually cheesecake is served really cold and kind of like a cream cheese brick you have to cut into it with your fork. You could tell just how short staffed they were and you could hear that there's only 1 sushi chef 1 regular chef and that's it for the kitchen. I don't know who is managing the shift schedule, maybe it's because we came on Memorial Day, but this type of service is not acceptable. I don't take this on the employees at all. The ambiance was great and the staff was super friendly. It's a little compact, but it made it feel even more authentic. To the person who doesn't know that PHO broth cooks the meat so you took it home and was confused when you saw the bag of meat please get off yelp. You left a bad review on an awesome place based on you being ignorant.

First, during COVID19, the price of food has gone up everywhere for various reasons. Therefore, the prices this place charges is now just average, whereas a year ago, it would have been considered expensive. Let's focus on the good first. The waitress deserves an A+ for service. She pours your soy sauce, snaps open the tab for your diet coke, and cleans your empty dishes with precision, very friendly too. The chefs are skilled in making the dishes very pretty beyond the normal sushi place. Bad = maybe due to COVID19, the freshness of the fish at best you can give is B for the salmon or tuna, and B- for the salmon eggs and albacore. The real snow crab was in flaky bit pieces rather than a solid string. The worst thing is the portion size is very very very very very small in comparison to the average sushi restaurant. So my overall recommendation is to travel to the Korean Sushi place unless than 100 yards away opposite side of Chandler Blvd., the dishes may not be as beautifully cut or skillfully designed, but at least your stomach will be more full after paying $37 a person, pre tip. I am parked in front of nearby MOD PIZZA, because I am still hungry. read more

Wow! What a treat this place is! Best fish I've ever had. Such a low key place. Great vibe, very clean and modern. VERY different sushi than you typically find in Arizona. One sided menu, some straightforward small plates and no deep fried gooey rolls. The chefs use torches to add heat to the rolls that need it, other than that, it's legit Japanese perfection. Rice was awesome, rolls and nigiri were gorgeous. The omakase bowls looks AMAZING! Definitely ordering one next time. Service is pretty good. Our server had varying levels of attentiveness, but was overall pretty good. Chefs were friendly and efficient, too. Will absolutely be back! read more

Stopped by for lunch today and was very pleased. Great menu with tons of options. So many appetizers it would be fun to come back with a few friends and just get a bunch to try. A variety of price points was nice to see. $11 lunch bento box for a quick stop off that won't break the bank, or choose from a variety of sushi at different price points when ready for a nice meal out. We did a chef's choice plate and loved it. Leo built us a delicious and beautiful arrangement, making sure to explain what everything was and how to eat each item to maximize the flavor. I'm hesitant to share how amazing this place is because we don't want it to get overrun! But I have to say, the experience was incredible. The sashimi was top-notch--we had seared bass, albacore, and black snapper, and while everything was delicious, the black snapper was truly outstanding. On top of that, the sushi chef was amazing--knowledgeable, friendly, and a great guide as we kept asking for more. If you're looking for fresh, perfectly prepared seafood with a personal touch, this spot is a true gem! read more

I try their couple kitchen item like chicken teriyaki, the chicken is super hard and chewy, and the teriyaki sauce super sweet and rich, I would not order this item anymore, I also try katsu chicken which is pretty good but sauce not my type! The calamari very Japanese style which just ok to me, i also try their maki roll, just ok not any special, the sashimi is fresh, I mean this new place just ok to me, nothing typical! read more
