We came back to Sushi Note to celebrate our first anniversary because this is where we had our first date. It was really special to come back a year later. When my Bf made the reservation, he mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary. They welcomed us with a sweet handwritten card waiting on our table, which was a really nice touch. We ordered a few different sushi rolls, and just like the first time, everything was fresh and delicious. We also tried the plum sake and the regular sake, and both were great. The only small issue was that we were accidentally charged for a bottle of plum sake instead of one glass. They fixed it right away, but I hope they'll be a little more careful with the bill next time. One of my favorite things about Sushi Note is the atmosphere. After visiting every hot spot on Sushi Row along Ventura Boulevard in the Valley, Sushi Note in Sherman Oaks truly stands out. The atmosphere feels elevated and sophisticated, more like a great New York sushi destination than your typical neighborhood spot. And I appreciated the most divine jazz music. My husband opted for the omakase, which was exceptional, while I explored several dishes across the menu. Every bite was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The miso cod was outstanding, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The hamachi crudo was fresh and delicate, the cucumber sunomono was bright and refreshing, and the Kari Kari roll is an absolute can't-miss dish. To finish, the yuzu sorbet was the perfect ending. It was light, citrusy, and incredibly refreshing. Between the quality of the food, the attention to detail, and the elevated dining experience, Sushi Note has earned a spot at the top of our list. The only part of the experience that I found lacking was in the service. The person helping us struggled with remembering the name and description of the food and needed to step away to get the information. The food is intended to be eaten left to right, and the person also set it down incorrectly a few times and needed to readjust our plates to correct it. All in all, I think the cost of omakase is reasonable, but I would expect a more prepared server for that cost. It does seem like additional training is required. read more

Celebrated our anniversary by having the Omakase at Sushi Note. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel special and celebrated. From a welcome glass of sparkling wine to a signed anniversary card from the staff. Every bite of the omakase was absolutely delicious. And the courses were impeccably timed. Often they come out so fast that I struggle to keep up. There were wonderful pauses between courses to make sure you enjoyed every bite and didn't feel rushed. Booths had plenty of space so you could breathe and not feel packed in. We lucked out and street parking was easy to find steps away from the restaurant. Hubs and I went all out and got the full note omakase here to celebrate our special occasion. Service was very detailed from the manager to the chef. They were so kind and thoughtful with a handwritten note and complimentary champagne to start off our course. Chef Saito was very intentional in his craft, and I felt as though I was having an omakase in Japan! Every cut tasted fresh, and I loved that the sashimi was just the right thickness on the sushi. The sushi (rice) was also seasoned perfectly so the nigiri tasted very well balanced. My favorite course was the uni, toro, and dessert. Great experience! We celebrated our anniversary here and they were so nice enough to give us some sparkling wine and a a hand written note congratulating us. With the Omikase, the sushi was good except some were too heavy on the wasabi while another one was heavy on the pepper. After the line up was done the chef was nice enough to ask if we wanted more and we asked for one more which was the best one out of all them. Service was attentive and friendly however we did have to wait for a little to get seated even if we made reservations. We waited like 15-20 min. We also noticed some of the sushi chefs and service were having trouble distinguishing orders and made it obvious. Our experience didn't get messed up but I think others did. Parking sucks since it's on Ventura in Sherman Oaks so street parking would be the only option. Make reservations online for outdoor or inside seating. read more

Wow, what an incredible hidden gem Sushi Note is. I brought my aunt here for her birthday dinner as she is a die hard sushi lover. The restaurant is small and intimate. Ample street parking along Ventura and on the side streets. We were seated quickly for our reservation, and they even had a handwritten birthday card on the table. We were given each a small glass of sparkling rose on the house which was delicious. What we came for was the Omakase experience. We opted for the sushi only - which was $130/pp. We also enjoyed a delicious bottle of nigori. The sushi was incredible - every piece we tried was so fresh and just downright amazing. We also ordered spicy tuna crispy rice and Japanese eggplant. Both dishes were incredible as well. Service was fantastic. This is a lovely place to enjoy a special night. Absolutely incredible meal and experience! My girlfriend and I were warmly greeted by Rod as we walked in and he immediately made us feel welcomed and looked after. Thea was our server and sommelier, we gave her some information on wine we liked and she helped us pick out an incredible catarrato orange wine. We both picked the Whole Note Omakase and every plate was beautifully presented and extremely delicious. Sushi Note just opened in the remodeled space of one of my old favorite sushi spots in LA, so I came in excited to try it. Sadly, it didn't hit the mark. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated, opened a $100 bottle of sake while waiting, and then sat at the end of the small wine bar. Another 15+ minutes went by before anyone even brought us menus or water--I finally had to flag someone down. When the food came, most of the sushi was average at best. The only standouts were the miso soup and the Japanese eggplant, which were both excellent. Street parking (paid and free options). They restaurant is located on the main street. We were seated at the bar; with the best view in the house. Chef took his time with each round and the flavors were phenomenal. You could taste the quality in the fish and rice. Each dish made with intention and detail. Honestly, my friend and I were having the worst day. She was in town, and I wanted to impress her, so I made reservations for the full note omakase sushi. Of course, as luck would have it, we got rear-ended on the freeway before and were completely late to our reservation. I was so mortified since I'm never late. First off, the staff was so nice and welcoming. They totally went above and beyond and just made the rest of our night such an amazing experience. Ian, the director of beverage, set up a wine pairing that brought out and accentuated each piece of nigiri. Chef Saito was amazing to watch up close at work. Each piece of nigiri was incredible. I first visited this restaurant about four years ago, and it was one of the most memorable sushi experiences I've ever had--and I eat a lot of sushi. Every course made me say "wow." The space felt intimate, the wine pairings complemented the omakase beautifully, and the service was elegant, polished, and attentive. The sushi was still good, but it lacked the exceptional quality and creativity I remembered. Out of the entire meal, only one course really stood out. The overall experience felt solid, but no longer special. Service was friendly and attentive, but the level of refinement seemed to have changed. The staff were warm and personable, but the presentation and tone felt more casual than what I would expect from a fine dining omakase setting. Similarly, the wine specialist was knowledgeable and engaging, but the interaction felt more conversational than polished. Overall, I left feeling disappointed compared to my previous experience. The restaurant is still good, but the level of excellence and attention to detail that once made it worth a special trip doesn't feel the same anymore. Sushi note is our favorite sushi spot in the valley! Saito-san and his team prepares every item, every dish with utmost care. I usually get the half-note omakase (I love the deep, classic flavors of their sushi). Depending on how hungry I am, I throw in an order of yellowtail biscotti and albacore Kari-kari. I love the ambience, too - it's fancy in an accessible, come-hither, way (haha). All the servers and wine people (lol, I don't drink) are super friendly and knowledgeable. Love! Love! Dear sushi note, here is a note for you. Your sommelier, Sean, should go back to pairing wine, if that's truly what he even does, instead of waiting your customers. We had a rather interesting evening here. Sean tried to explain to us how a restaurant works after having waited for a cut roll almost the entire time. It's Better customer service to say it's coming right up rather than explaining how a restaurant works, as if we didn't already know, there are multiple teams working on multiple different orders FOH and BOH. Especially since, the order was literally was in the hands of the kind waitress behind him. Anyway, the entire time he seemed like he wanted to run away quickly after taking our orders. The sushi here is good. The uni and the bluefin tuna were probably the two best pieces. The salmon had a strange bite that I'd never had before. Definitely not buttery as expected. The spicy tuna cut roll also had an obscene amount of rice in it. See the photo and you will understand. I've never experienced so much rice in a cut roll anywhere else which was interesting. Also be aware that anything with their seaweed paper in it, you should definitely wait about an unnecessary 5 minutes before eating otherwise it feels like you've got the leather of the sea in your mouth, and not in a good way. The ambiance here however was the only means keeping us calm. It felt like we were in a nice library/ wine bar until the crowd rolled in shortly after. It is a small place so do expect to shout to each other a bit. Overall, wouldn't come here again. There are other great sushi spots with better service, attentiveness and wider menu. They didn't have unagi or albacore belly which Sean was quick to let us know. Make sure you also read the parking signs on the streets near by, or you will be ticketed in the residential. read more

The waiters were all so sweet and knowledgable. Service was prompt and they were just so on top of things. There was a perfect amount of checking up on us versus letting us enjoy our dinner the whole time - - D I N N E R - - We got the whole note along with a glass of wine each. We were greeted with a complimentary glass of rose once we were seated. The meal was nicely paced and a lot! Things started off great with the edamame and miso soup. We also got a lemon sorbet to clean our palates before starting off with our sushi. Every piece was so delicious and just melted in our mouths. The flavors of the garnish were all so delicate and tasteful. There was a smear of wasabi in almost all of our sushi pieces, which I loved. If you're not a big wasabi fan, this is something you could maybe talk to the chefs about. Overall, everything was great! I think I'd go with the half note next time because that was just a little too much food for us and then just order extra of our personal favorites if needed. read more

I should not have bought into the hype... Unremarkable, uninspired, overrated. Food - Fish were fresh and well curated (only reason for the two stars). Aside from that, the delivery was out of balance. Too much wasabi/salt on nigiri, toro was actually fishy tasting vs buttery. None of the dishes had flair - miso mushroom soup was under salted and had no flavor, some nigiri were over salted, and other nigiri just ended up tasting bland and didn't stand out at all. For these prices, one would hope for the sushi to be remarkable. Everything kind of tasted the same after a certain point and did not excite. Menu felt limited and restrictive - no crab, unagi, etc. mostly just sea bream and yellowtail over and over again. Not enough variety. Drink - the "beverage coordinator" or sommelier which he called himself or who ever he is - was quite rude, edgy, unenthusiastic, and probably hung over. I get it, drinking goes with the territory but come on, try to keep a good attitude and be able to do your job with a semi-smile, decent attitude, and don't act like everything we ask for is a some special request or favor. He didn't really offer too much help with wine selection or sample tastings (rare in the sommelier community) so we ended up relying mostly on his verbal descriptions and surprise surprise, the wines we ended up with were just ok, not to our tastes - this could have easily been improved with a little more attention and effort. Personally I think he was reluctant to offer samplings not because of business policy but because he was just unmotivated or hungover, didn't care about customer experience, etc. Ambiance - cozy and intimate, another reason for two star vs. one star. Service - impersonal, left much to be desired. Weird looks when asking for ponzu sauce (yeah I get it, ponzu is kind of frowned upon at high end sushi joints, but my wife likes it, so just get over it and please bring it to the table without attitude). Dirty dishes kept stacking up on the table and we had to wait a long time or ask for them to be cleared. This is just basic common sense for any establishment - dinner for 4 at $1000, please clear the table of finished dishes in a timely manner. Basics. Come on. Overall very low value for the premium price tags. This is LA with so many options for great sushi experiences, this one did not stand out at all. Forgettable experience. Sushi Yuzu in Toluca lake for example is way better on every level. Really think one star is fair but I'll go with two to be nice. I won't be back and I strongly recommend you splurge elsewhere. read more

They have Omakase style that you can pair with wine and enjoy while the chef makes different types of sushi or you can do al acart style pick your own. I recommend sitting at the bar, the main chef only serves the 7 guest at the bar and the other 2 chefs serve the rest of the resturant. I didn't go with the omakase I like to pick me own items. Basically anything you try here is going to be amazing, from Spanish mackerel, jack mackerel, barracuda, they have it all and hand picked by the main chef. If you want over the top creations this is not your place but if you want very fresh simple yet very good flavors, Sushi Note should be on your list. We sat at the sushi bar so we can have the experience of watching the sushi chefs make their creations. It was very difficult to hear since it was kinda loud in the restaurant so had a hard time hearing the chef explain each dish as it was placed in front of us nonetheless we enjoyed each bite. The other downside was that the menu states 12 pieces of sushi but we only got 10 when I looked back on my pictures and no mention to us of the change. Deducted one star for not being up front. Was craving sushi and specifically a good omakase that wasn't horribly overpriced, so I chose Sushi Note. Of course, I went with the Whole Note omakase, which was reasonably priced at $140 for 12 pieces of sushi, miso soup, a tofu appetizer, scallop tartare, torotaku handroll, and two types of yuzu (sorbet and gelato). The sushi definitely had generous portions of fish, which by itself made it worth it. Highlights for me were the hotate scallop, otoro, surprisingly the medium fatty tuna, red snapper, and bullseye snapper. I was slightly disappointed with the seared bonito, as it tasted like a standard seared ahi tuna. Service was great, no complaints on my end on this one. Aya took really good care of us. Ambience...well, we had to settle for outdoor seating because I booked it too late in the week. Turns out the outdoor seating is literally on the sidewalk of Ventura Blvd! In the end, it worked out because I would've definitely been way more annoying taking my pictures with flash inside. The ambience inside did look pretty nice though. Sushi Note is good for what it is. A solid omakase, but not one that'll blow your mind. Worth a try, but I want to try other spots before coming back here. read more

The whole note omakase at $140 still a good deal but not worth the starters that was served and importantly the (Shari) sushi rice was well season and served at the perfect temperature but it was a bit to mushy. Whole Note Omakase: MISO SOUP: Good soup. EDAMAME: This looked old and over done. First time ever having edamame in a omakase. GOMA TOFU: This was ok. HOKKAIDO HOTATE TARTARE: This was literally a small bite. Needed a bit more flavor. Here are some of the highlights from the nigiri course: Kama Toro: Amazing piece of nigiri served that night. This piece just melts in your mouth. Thank you Chef for this wonderful piece. Blue Fin Tuna Akami: Beautiful lean piece. Bafun Uni: Sweet and delicious. Shiro Ebi/ Caviar: Delicious sweet white shrimp. Katsu: Delicious. Dry Aged Kanpachi: Excellent: Per Chef they got this fish from the Joint Eatery. Torotako HR was delicious love that crispy crunch from the seaweed. Our Chef was fantastic. I didn't catch his name but he was Filipino and has tattoo sleeve. His rice to fish ratio was perfect. We also has some great talks. Besides that the service was professional and fantastic. Overall I thought omakase at Sushi Note was good just nigiri course. I know they cater to a different crowd but at $140 it's not worth it in my opinion but if you decide to come I recommend making reservations to sit at the bar. read more
