An alright eating experience tonight (2/27/22). Arrived at around 6:50 PM, had to put our name and number on the waiting list. Got seated after 15 mins since it was pretty packed for a Sunday night. Picked up some dumplings, Chicken Teriyaki, Sushi, Korean Spicy Noodles, Lo Mein, Vanilla Ice Cream. Food tasted decent for the most part. The California Rolls and Shrimp Tempura could have been better. Didn't see as much selection of food as before, though. Felt like there were a bunch of entrees missing from the menu compared to years past. Dinner price was $35 per person. For that, you would expect a little better quality of food. Didn't see as much fish and seafood entrees, saw some Crab and Shrimp, but that was it. There weren't that much meat selection as well. We came towards the end of the lunch hours, which is definitely the worst time to come (would not recommend). The food was pretty mediocre and there were really slim pickings. Overall satisfied my craving for large quantities of sushi and food. Decent value if you can eat a lot. Tea and drinks are not included in the price and cost extra... Sushi rolls: Most tasted pretty good, however, very skimpy on the fish/fillings and heavy handed on the rice. This is expected at a sushi buffet. The salmon sashimi salad wasn't bad, salmon wasn't super fresh and a bit tough - these were the end bits from the salmon rolls they used. One of the rolls I ate tasted bad, can't remember which, but I actually spit it out. The rest were okay. Hot food: Not bad. Enjoyed tang su yuk, okonomiyaki, dumplings, etc. They have a stir fry and hot pot station. Special mention to the sweet potato tempura - that was my favorite! Hot dipping sauce on the side. Partner liked the sweet and sour chicken. Dessert: Most were gone. The ice cream soft serve only has vanilla flavor during lunch and it was very tasty, but not solid enough. Sushi On is conveniently located in a large shopping mall close to the Marriott Hotel. Lunch is $21.95 plus tax and tip. I like buffets because there's usually a huge variety of things to choose from when I can't really decide what I want to eat. Sushi On is no exception. There's a huge selection of nigiri Sushi and several types of Sushi roll combinations. Unlike many all-you-can-eat places, the place is not huge but rather a nice proportion. Among the hot entrees available, there were crawfish which I usually don't eat but I was willing to try. The clams were delicious. There's also a shabu-shabu section which surprisingly only had shrimp and no beef. The dessert section was huge and featuring several types of pastries fruits, and soft serve ice cream. I'm not one for sweets but there is a fantastic coffee machine that preparers everything from expresso to cappuccino. It's a fresh ground super automatic type machine that grinds the beans with every shot. If you're a coffee lover, it's strongly recommended. Due to covid-19, masks are mandatory when you get your food as well as disposable gloves, and styrofoam plates. It was a very fun dining experience, definitely recommended. read more

My wife and I were both working remote and miraculously had no meetings today. Time for an All You Can Eat Sushi lunch! We've had good experiences at Sushi On for their weekend and dinner buffets, so we gave the lunchtime a try with the fewer crowds to jostle against. The lunch buffet has fewer items than the weekend or dinner buffets (no crab legs, no nutella crepes, etc.), but there were plenty of tasty sushi, cooked Japanese food items and Korean dishes like Kalbie, Noodles and dumplings. Most items at the lunch buffet are self-service. Servers were friendly and quick to clear the tables. Noise level was moderate. I've been for lunch and dinner. Although the lunch menu is more limited than the dinner, you still get great quality sushi. Servers have always been very helpful and attentive. It can get kind of noisy in here but I don't really mind, I love to people watch while I eat. I love the nigiri, spicy salmon/tuna rolls, and my absolute favorite: ikura (salmon roe). I can eat a whole plate of that to myself. They may be known for their sushi but they have a few other great dishes too. We tried the galbi last time. It was actually better than some of the galbi I've had at AYCE KBBQ on the past. They have a build-your-own soup station and a soba station. I always eat at least 2 bowls of cold soba noodles with fixings and a side of shrimp/veggie tempura. I enjoy the hot seafood dishes the offer at dinner as well. The desserts are cut into bite sized pieces so you can have just the perfect amount of each one you want to try. I, on the other hand, prefer to make myself an affogato. I fill a mug with ice cream, the usually have matcha and vanilla, then select whichever coffee I'm feeling at that time. I think they offer mocha, cappuccino, caramel, or even hot cocoa. For lunch ayce buffet for around $26, it's not bad for what you get. I was surprised the galbi was pretty decent and the salmon nigri, dragon roll and rainbow roll was pretty good. I also liked the seaweed salad, miso soup and udon. Some of the other sushi options were not great and I didn't love some of the seafood options. Kids are half off so and if you want variety, this is not a bad spot to come to eat. Service is good and there is a wait even for lunch so it is popular. read more

My 8yo loves it here, and I like it cos it reminds me of my time spent in South Korea. There is a wide variety of food here and a huge selection of sushi! It's buffet so obviously not the best quality but its actually very decent. It's basically all I eat there, as well as the salad and teriyaki chicken. I really love the soft shell crab but it's always empty, and as soon as they put it out, people are like vulturrrresssss, taking 2 plates full! The restaurant should really have a limit on those, yes I get that it's a buffet and people can get as much of the soft shell crab as they want, but why can't other people also get a chance? Food have not enough fresh or tasty with the price we pay. They clean the oysters well but It wasn't delicious. Ice cream just fine. Sushi/ Sashimi were amazing. Crepe station was cool. Chinese cuisine, especially beef with onion is very well. Noodles station was clean. Service quite good. Unfortunately there were mud worms in the oysters; there is a lack of quality control at this establishment. Overall the offerings were vast but quality is generally lacking in the offerings, as seen in the above statement. The nigiri sushi is made promptly and replenished but the neta would slide off the shari easily; the shari was very lightly seasoned and the neta of lower quality. I've been here a handful of times throughout the years, including back when it was called "Todai." Since rebranding to "Sushi On," there has been less focus on the hot seafood and more on sushi. And it's unfortunate. This place is horrible at refilling its sushi. I've come here twice within the last couple of months, and I can finally say that I'm done coming here. When the sushi plates go empty, they stay empty basically until you get full of other foods or decide that it's no longer worth your time. It's frustrating. It's easy to blame greedy customers, but this has happened on multiple occasions. Despite the constant sushi-rolling behind the counter, they put the sushi out at a snail's pace, and I'm convinced they do it on purpose. At my latest visit, I waited all day for the dragon roll (eel) to come out. When it finally came out, there was hardly any eel at all. People line up to get the sushi, but a waiter told us that there is no line. So if you feel comfortable going against the status quo, you can go up and grab your coveted sushi at your discretion. Most recently, I came during lunch on a holiday ($22/person, excluding tip). Drinks are extra. During the lunch hour, there were no oysters, no crab legs, and no teppanyaki being served. I've also come during weekend dinner, which can turn out to be $40/person with tip. Not worth it, and not worth the wait for basic sushi. Our server was not attentive, even considering the lowered standard for a buffet. He would look over at our table but completely ignore the stacked, finished plates that needed to be cleared. It came to the point that we had to move our plates to an abandoned table that needed to be bused in order to get the plates cleared. When our cups went empty, it went unnoticed until we asked for refills. Towards the end of the meal, the server was better about refills and clearing plates. If you like your veggies, this is not the place. Aside from a few salad offerings at the sushi bar, such as a seaweed salad or Caesar salad, there's also a dupe tomato, basil, and tofu offering (instead of mozzarella... who does that!?!), the closest resemblance to any veggie items was veggie tempura. Which is probably not what you're hoping for. Many of their seafood dishes are imitation. Their fried calamari were reminiscent of fish sticks. They do have a pho/udon/shabu shabu station but I decided to pass on it this time. In terms of taste, the food was fine, but absolutely none of the dishes were worthy of seconds. One of the redeeming features is the dessert bar, which offers a variety of small bites like tiramisu, lemon cake, Oreo cake, pumpkin pie, butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, matcha flavored cake and ice cream, and my favorite- a crepe station. In addition to the soft serve machine, they also have a self-serve coffee station. Unfortunately, the ice cream lacked creaminess and had a very watered-down flavor. While the bananas in my crepe weren't ripe, I drowned out the disappointment with chocolate sauce. But like I said- I'm done being disappointed here. read more

This was my first visit, although I had been there before they changed names. For 2, the buffet came to $50.77, which was a little pricey. The sushi had the most variety, although they make them smaller. Some of the hot food items were my favorite, so I ate mostly from there. These were things like marinated beef and pork, fried spicy noodles, fried rice, dumplings. The desserts were okay, though very small, like the sushi. They had vanilla soft serve, but no green tea, which should at least be on the lunch menu considering the price. I tried the coffee machine, but it wasn't working properly and didn't dispense the coffee. My other complaint is the cooks out front were too busy checking their phones or standing around to notice they needed to refill some food trays. If you get there close to the end of lunch, you won't get much selection and there will be an employee food rush between their lunch and dinner opening. read more

First review of 2024! And it's a worthy place indeed. This place is amazing. Ever since Hinode in Rockville closed, I have been dying for a new ayce sushi place, and I found it. I came right at 530pm when they opened for dinner, and it wasn't too crowded, but there were a few others waiting as well. The selection was very large, with nigiri, rolls, some sashimi, some salads, a couple made to order sections, and a hot food section. They also had snow crab legs which was great to see on a buffet. The price was a bit higher than most buffets at $42 for dinner, but well worth it if you consider the quality and selection on the buffet. There's a decent selection of fruit, cakes, and cookies for dessert as well. Some notable items I enjoyed was the pork belly, the beef wrapped eggplant, the mackerel sashimi, and the baked salmon roll that I can't remember the exact name of. And the crab legs of course. Went to this place when it was originally To-Dai (sp?). Mid selection of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese buffet fair, along with the usual dessert suspects. I usually only go here for "special occasions", as I'm trying to get off the AYCE train, and honestly this place is more miss than hit for me, especially at its price point. There is something for everyone, whether you're a pesca, carni, or herbi/vegetarian. After having returned for eating nothing but street food for 2+ weeks in a foreign country, the food was on point today. I filled my sushi quota for the year, so in this case, Sushi On was on-point. Service was above average, especially considering how busy it gets as soon as it opens. There is usually a line outside 10 minutes before they open on the weekends. read more

Came here with a large party on a Sunday for lunch. I haven't been here since it was Todai a few years back so I was curious to see what changed. Luckily we were able to get an isolated space for the whole family. They somewhat have protocols in place regarding Covid. Some people were wearing masks, some weren't and they have a box of gloves to use while scooping food. Hot food wise I noticed there wasn't too much and it seemed as if the more popular things weren't getting restocked. There was a lot of sushi though. It was ok mostly but I did have a few pieces that had hard rice (old, not fried). The servers were pretty nice though and cleared our plates pretty quickly. If you are under 12 years of age AND your height is between 4 feet and under 5 feet, you pay 1/2 of the full price. If you are under 12 years of age AND your height is between 3 feet and under 4 feet, you pay $8.95 for lunch and $9.95 for dinner. If you are under 12 years of age AND your height is under 3 feet, you eat for free. That means it's full price for everyone who is 5 feet or more in height regardless of age. The price for lunch is $23.95 and the hours are 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, every day.    The variety of Asian food was impressive, especially their sushi. The buffet was comprised mainly of popular Japanese dishes, some Korean dishes and a few Chinese-type dishes. There are 30 types of sushi. They all had distinctive flavors and were made fresh. This made our visit worthwhile. The other dishes were good but not outstanding. The food was cooked well and seemed fresh. Customized Udon Noodle soup and Shabu-Shabu are available. My wife and I didn't try it. Shabu-Shabu means swish-swish in Japanese. It is similar to a Chinese hotpot.    The desserts were fruits, jello, ice milk and miniature pastries. The ice milk (it was not ice cream) came in 2 flavors, vanilla and green tea. I'm not a fan of ice milk because it's not rich and creamy like ice cream. The miniature pastries were cute and most had a good flavor. The small portions and variety were great. Overall, it was pleasing and better than desserts at most Chinese buffets.    There are 2 automated coffee makers, one for espresso and the other for regular coffee. The espresso was a little bitter and not strong. It tasted like a full city roast with a medium body. For espresso, the flavor was completely wrong. Their regular coffee wasn't available because the machine was broken. Their sign said a new replacement was coming in approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Other than coffee and water, you have to pay for all drinks. For example, it cost $3.50 for iced tea.    Our server was pleasant and quick. There were 5 people in our group and each person's dirty dishes were removed before they returned from the buffet tables. The dining room and restrooms were clean and spacious. The women's restroom had 4 toilet stalls. The men's restroom had 2 urinals and 2 toilets. They had paper towels and air dryers. Compared to other Asian buffets, this one is at least a 4-star. The atmosphere, the food and the service were good. Yes, there is room for improvement in some of the food. This was our 3rd visit, and everything has been consistently good. Fortuitously arrived right at opening after a day of shopping and Sushi On was already filled with people waiting to be seated. The buffet is clean and the food is good - well worth the $40 price tag. HUGE selection of offerings of which the crab legs essentially had its own line and the sushi line was often backed up. Unsure of etiquette in these situations, but I didn't get any dirty looks when I went around the traffic jams. The sushi is good quality, oysters were okay, and the mini-sized desserts were portioned small enough to try everything without completing stuffing yourself. We had to ask for water refills, but the staff was quick to pick up used dishes. Sushi On is a great bang-for-your-buck buffet that serves quality food. Arrive when they open to avoid being placed on the waitlist, however if you do have to wait, the tables turned over pretty quickly. Good bang for your buck! Usually AYCE sushi places have poor quality sushi and nigiri, but this is among one of the better ones. Before covid, they had a crepe station as well, but that seems to be removed permanently. Sushi on has sushi, korean/chinese dishes (kbbq, dumplings, noodles), udon/hotpot, seafood, and dessert options. The service is also good and they clear the dishes relatively quickly. I have never had any issues with management or service. Sometimes, the place gets so crowded that you have to wait in a line or the cooks don't replenish the dish. This is one of the best sushi buffets I have ever seen. Not only does it have sushi, but it also has excellent Korean food. I saw many Koreans in the restaurant, so I was expecting the food to be pretty good. It did not let me down. We went on a Friday for lunch. No wait time at all. I don't know that I would go for dinner because it is expensive, but for lunch it was okay. The sweet and sour pork was amazing! The kalbi was excellent as well. The kimchi is a little different but still very good. The spicy noodles were sooo yummy. Quite spicy, so if you can't handle spice, I would not try it. The fried zucchini was good but not so much the fried fish. I didn't like the seaweed salad either. I guess I was going more for the Korean food than the sushi. The sushi itself was okay but not as good as the Korean food. They have sashimi, roe, and all different kinds of sushi. I didn't get to try everything, but from what I did, most of it was good. The service was great too! My water cup was never empty! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the crowdedness and subsequent noise. The tables in the middle of the restaurant are squeezed in together. If you can sit more towards the outside of the restaurant (along the windows to the mall), that's best. Not as compact at all. For the price, it was worth it. A little of the high side, but for all the food you're getting, well worth the price. I didn't see the crab legs which I was expecting, so I was a little disappointed at that. It may have been just the time of year or maybe they only have them for dinner. I don't know. This is my second time here! This is the best buffet for sushi as far as I know nearby the centreville area. I took a group of 38 people here and they accommodated us so well. Now we are bringing my brother in law here because of the many selections of food. It's a bit on the pricey side but it worth coming here. If you like having a broad selection of asian flavors...Primarily serving a japanese menu. You'd love this place! I enjoy the soups like ramen or udon or create your shabu shabu. They also serve chilled crab legs and seafood assortments. The sushi is on point and there are some options of sushi that I've never tried before that I really liked. My favorite area is the crepe station and soft serve ice cream. I wish we could easily get two or more crepes instead of having to go back and forth to get more servings. But it so good fresh and the options of filling from nutella to strawberry or blueberry preserves are yummy. The cappuccino machine is a my personal go to and good way to end dinner. You get all the fun rolls and sashimi. 6-8 different types of salads. Soba noodles and a hot noodle soup area which includes ramen, shabu shabu and pho. You get a nice variety of hot Korean/ Chinese food, dessert bar with a crepe station. Definitely try the beef tartare roll, soba noodles, shabu shabu soup and the fried squid. Service here is great. Servers are attentive and the chefs constantly keep the food plates restocked. Lunch is around $25 and dinner is $30. Food is price reasonably considering you're getting a wide variety of quality sushi. Highly recommend this restaurant for everyone. Don't be discouraged by the large crowds you get seated here quickly. If you're in the mood for sushi this is the spot! read more

Have been here a few times over the years, when it was Todai and then after it became Sushi On. Plentiful food, good variety, decent quality. I recommend the seaweed salad, fresh salmon salad, rainbow rolls, and Korean pork belly. Also heard the udon is good but didn't try it myself. We save up our appetites and look forward to a big mid-day lunch. Afterward, we finish up with the green tea ice cream and then a mug of strong fresh-brewed coffee and a walk through the mall to help digestion and fend off food coma. :) read more

The variety of sushi is great, the seafood selection is decent, and the steak, noodles, and dessert are pretty good. I had my first soft-shell crab and omg it was good. They also had this mini steak station where they cooked the steak medium-rare, which was pretty delicious for a buffet place. The kalbi was ok but I felt like it could be better. Fried rice was decent too. The miso soup was good but the temperature could be a bit hotter. The oyster was ok but my sister said you can tell it was frozen then thawed rather than fresh. The sushi section was mostly great. The cookies at the dessert station are always my favorite. The powdered butter cookies are just so delicious and the chocolate chip cookies taste different, but in a good way. I also like their mini slices of pumpkin pie and mini slices of tofu raspberry (?) cake/pie or whatever they call it. They also have fruit available at the dessert station. There were no forks and knives that I could find. Just the metal chopsticks that they place on your table and some spoons by the buffet area.
