My family and I have been going to Sushi Palace in North Haven for years. While the overall quality of the sushi is average-above average, given the price and the amount of sushi and sashimi we eat, it is well worth a visit. I know of some all-you-can-eat sushi places that limit the amount of special rolls you can order per person; Sushi Palace is not one of those places. We have always ordered a TON of sushi, sashimi, and specialty rolls and not once have we been told "You've ordered too much food." However, we do try to finish everything that we order. Another huge perk is the unlimited appetizers (the best is the beef rice bowl) which are dangerous because they really fill you up before the sushi comes out. Of course, red bean or green tea ice cream dessert at the end of the meal is a must. A downside to Sushi Palace is the waitstaff, who always appear to be rushed and are a little curt in their attitude. However, the food, both in terms of quality and quantity, more than make up for it. I am sure that we will be going to Sushi Palace for years to come. read more

My friends and I are huge sushi fans and we have gone to different places from Mystic to Old Saybrook to Stratford all in Connecticut. This particular place has been the best in regards to value for money. For $20.00 the food is absolutely delicious. A customer is not just limited to the typical California and Philly Rolls - there are plenty of specialty rolls. In addition, there are plenty of kitchen dishes as well such as dumplings, calamari, soups, and salads... This place is well worth the money. The environment is interesting - small room, decorated with Asian furnishings. I feel like the restaurant would be better if the music were not as "hip" with today's Pop Hits. Put on a CD with the culture! And for the waitresses, many of these reviews say that they are rude. Truthfully, they are quiet and they do not speak too frequently. I already knew my meal was going to be packed with rice because it is an all you can eat.. BUT it was a lot worse than I thought... 1st: I ordered a glass of wine which came out with clear as day lip stains all over the rim.. it clearly was not washed. When they brought me another glass out it had the same lip stains on it. I'm about sure if they just brought another dirty one out or were thinking I wouldn't notice with the same one the second time haha. At that point I should have left but stupid me stayed and ordered a water at that point. 2nd: My friend and I ordered a few rolls which did come out packed with rice as expected. She ordered some tempura appetizers and when they came out there was barely any chicken in it. The whole thing was consumed with just straight up tempura. I mentioned to the waitress that maybe it was a mistake because we ordered chicken tempura and she said that that was the chicken tempura. 3rd: The waitress thought the poor service was hilarious, not sure what that was about. I hate to give this place 3 stars, and I want to give four! But I can't. The food was tasty enough, and you can't beat the prices. I will tell you however that I liked the food at the Sushi Palace location in Hamden a lot better. I will mention that I had the green tea ice cream mixed with chocolate, and it was delightful! Try it! My main complaint about this location is that when my dining partner and I came in to be seated, they put us at a table that was literally on top of the table next to us, to the point where it was awkward. The table next door was talking about babies and weddings and we were basically a part of it all. I wouldn't mind this normally, and I know there were only two of us, but there were FIVE other tables open, and I really didn't think it was fair to inconvenience us in this way to save room for others. There were other parties of 2 that were seated at bigger tables. The staff was ok, not the nicest. Everything I love about the Sushi Palace in Hamden I've been been frequenting for years, except with more space - and more parking. What's not to like about all-you-can-eat sushi for around $20? And it's good, fresh sushi made to order - with lots of creative roll options. Plus there's tons of kitchen items including miso and udon soups, tempuras, edamame, seaweed salad, and ice cream. Again, all-you-can-eat - you just have to mark off what you want on little sheets of paper that list all the menu items, and it's all brought to your table - pretty quickly, too. I remember when I had some issues with Sushi Palace in Hamden being a little slow, or forgetting some rolls, but I haven't had that problem in a while, and those improvements have passed on to this Sushi Palace. The menu has also expanded to include more creative rolls and hand rolls. While I'm not in love with everything on the menu, I love most of the items on it. Sushi Palace is a great way to try new things because you're paying the same price no matter what. And it's a great way to enjoy all your favorite kinds of sushi - and lots of it. Bonus: One of my favorite things about the Hamden location was this sweet playlist that brought me back to my tweens, complete with lots of Britney, Rhianna, and Mariah, with songs in alphabetical order, playing their way through each wonderful female pop artist. I didn't hear it last time I was at the Hamden location, but it was playing strong at the North Haven Sushi Palace when I was there a little over a week ago. (Lady Gaga followed by Mariah Carey.) What will you waste if you go here? Your time and possibly your money. I went for the all you can eat sushi buffet. It's the standard check off what you want on a piece of paper, and then made to order. This was the absolute most slowest sushi buffet I have ever visited. I ordered two plates of sushi and it took AN HOUR. AT LUNCHTIME! And there were only 5 other tables filled! WHAT! I will never waste my time again here. Sushi was mediocre, it could have been fresher. Lunch prices are the same as dinner prices, $20 per person. I really don't think it's worth it. While the sushi was good, there was really nothing special about it and I found the pieces of sushi a bit too big, it seemed like a lot more rice than actual fish. I have been to two Sushi Palace locations. This one has much better parking and i really like the decor inside too. Plenty of room during the week day. Not sure what it's like on weekends. Have to recommend a few things. The mushroom sushi is awesome especially for people who want to try sushi and don't love fish. The chicken tempura is light and delicious. I also love the simple yet creamy flavor of the egg custard sashimi. Can't wait to get back again. One word. Awedelicizing. That's right, you heard it in your head right. This place was great. In short, after reading other reviews, the music IS a current pop list, you do have to wait on sushi depending what you ordered and how many other people ordered (but we didnt mind the 10 minutes inbetween completely filled PLATTERS), and the servers are standard "asian restaurant waitstaff"; ie they dont do chitchat, they just get in and out with what you need. I surprised my brother with this place for us to try it for the first time Saturday for lunch. You get seated, luckily it wasn't that busy because the restaurant is pretty small. The waitress took our drink order and gave us paper menus. You mark off what you want and then hand it back and she gives it to the sushi chefs you can watch. My brother and I tried A LOT of things, a little at a time (they will charge you if you don't finish what you order). EV.VER.RY.THING was delicious. There was a piece of sashimi I tried that I didn't like because of the consistancy, but I'm weird about that stuff. They have unique pairings and rolls. We ended up getting 3 largeeee PLATTERS of sushi by the end. And it all came up to like $44 with tax and everything (so consistent with the about $20 a person pricing.) We were very pleased and impressed. We've gone to other "all you can eat" before and there were only a small handful of things to try and 3-4 pieces max- so you get sick of waiting and eating the same thing. And we've been to places you pay by the roll and had to order a regular dinner because we were already at $60 a person. This place has a large variety. You can hear the cooking for certain rolls. And, personally, I liked the fact that the rice on certain rolls was warm. Not 'room temperature' warm, like right out of the cooking contraption. Instead of "we made rice 2 weeks ago and kept it ice cold in the fridge this whole time" cold temperature. And there's salad and soups and other things that come with the all you can eat price but we were too excited for sushi to try that stuff. Oh. We tried the red bean ice cream. It was... good. Asian ice cream consistency. Very different flavor. Its just a small scoop. Try something new! Definitely have been recommending highly to friends. i go to Sushi Palace for the food, not the service or ambiance. As it is an all-you-can-eat place, it's pretty amazing just how fresh the sushi is and how many different (and complex) rolls they offer. At $19.95 per person, it's hard to argue. No where is there a better bargain for sushi. There is also a full kitchen menu, as well, all for the one price. The restaurant itself doesn't have a lot going for it aesthetically. Tables, quite close together, booths on the sides. Sushi bar along one wall. Since I can't even remember the decor right now, that pretty much sums it up. But, as I said, I don't go for the ambiance. Service is usually harried. I've never had to wait forever, as some previous reviewers have complained about. But it isn't exactly attentive. Fill out your order form, someone grabs it as they go by, the food shows up, you eat and order more if you still have room. I've never had a problem getting water or tea when I needed it. There are definitely classier sushi restaurants and ones that have equally good food or better service, but Sushi Palace really gives you bang-for-your-buck when you are just craving good Japanese food. read more

Been here twice. They gip you on the portions. But, what do you want for all you can eat? The main thing I can't stand about this place are the staff. They stare un-relentlesly at you while you eat and I swear they talk smack about you too. It's un-nerving while your trying to relax and eat. I will start out by saying that food is really well made and very delicious. If I were to base this solely off of the food, my review would be a 3-4 Star one. Unfortunately, service is a big factor and Sushi Palace is terrible at it. Thirty to forty minute wait times are pretty common, even when you're the only one in the restaurant. I've actually had several times where the only reason the chefs even STARTED making my food was when they overhear me contemplating leaving after forty minutes of waiting (and being the only table in the restaurant) Sure, the sushi is all you can eat, but good luck getting two plates in under two hours. The weird and constant banging in the back is a little unnerving as well. Part of me thinks that maybe they're just preparing fresh fish, but sometimes I think the noises are some super secret sushi fight club... In which case, I shouldn't be talking about this. I visited this sushi restaurant when it was Sushi Kame. The sushi was decent. Nothing to go OMG about. The service was terrible. There was a wait in an otherwise empty restaurant. Perhaps it was miscommunication due to language difficulties but what followed after we sat down was just annoying. I vowed never to go there again as I was offended and one of our party walked out and went to the Hollywood video that used to be there. Be that as it may I heard it had changed hands. Sushi Palace is outstanding. It cost $18.95 per person. The sushi is as fresh as it gets. The rolls are really good. A little disappointed in the salmon skin roll. However the Godzilla Roll was the best I've ever had. Hands down. The waitress was very nice. We didn't know how to order as we've never been to a sushi buffet. So she came over and explained it to us. I was like wow. Very cool. I also expected the worst but what I found was a really great surprise. Cleanliness also impressed me. Yes.Seriously it is great. We used to go to the Hamden location regularly....but now we will hit North Haven. The parking is much easier than Hamden (meaning lots of it). We went on a Saturday evening around 5:30. There were a few other tables, but it wasn't crazy busy like the Hamden location. The service was great, and the food was as well. They have a lovely 'kitchen' menu and good special rolls. For about 20 bucks, you really can't beat the deal. The last time we were there, a nearby table was discussing 50 Shades of Grey....So we counted that as entertainment. Hilarious discussion and Delish food. Cant get any better than that. read more

I have been coming to this location for a while. Sometimes several times in a month due to how close and convenient it is for me. I am never blown away by the food itself but it is decent for the price and what it is, "all you can eat." As many have said the portions are large especially when it comes to how much rice they use. Usually the rice is of decent quality thoigh. The same goes with the fish. Again the food is not amazing but does help a sushi fix. The service is consistently not great when it's busy. They want you in and out rather quickly and you are often fumbling to grab their attention for the simplest requests. Most recently, we didn't get water refills for a solid 20 minutes, even noticing other tables ask the same thing. There were also parts missing from our order so we had to wait longer for it to arrive after reordering. This place also really needs a waiting area for patrons. When it's packed people just stand around the tables by the door. It's uncomfortable for everyone. They could easily modify the front door to have seats or take out a table. All in all its fine. I've never had a meal bad enough to completely turn me away, but I'll probably explore other spots for all you can eat. read more

Went with my girlfriend here for my birthday and I'll start by saying that this place is a Godsend. Typically, I'll go to Sakura in Hamden, order three rolls, and leave still feeling a little hungry. Sushi Palace's all-you-can-eat special is a game changer. It was a little confusing first walking in as our server handed two pieces of paper with sushi, sashimi, appetizers, soups, etc. and a pen but no actual menu. After asking another server how this works we got things cleared up. For the all-you-can-eat special you check off as much food as you want and they'll bring it all out to you. Once you finish, they come back with the same slips of paper and ask if you'd like anything else. The only catch is you can't bring any leftovers home and you have to clean your plate before asking for more food. For the price, you really can't beat it. Great way to try all kinds of different sushi or to load up on your favorites. Note: For every person in your party, you'll be charged the price of the all-you-can-eat special. So, you can't just squad up and have one person order the special and feed an army for $20. This is understandable though, otherwise they'd be out of business. I'll be back here very soon! read more

Nice fresh items, prepared deftly and tasty. Pretty standard menu in an 'all you can eat' format. Rice tea was as good as it gets. Mediocre Saki list. Servers, while well intended, need to keep their 'heads up', constantly scanning their stations to see all their customers at once (like lifeguards scanning the water). This save trips to the kitchen, creates efficiencies, keeps customers delighted (tipping better), and tables turning. This behavior is not uncommon in my experience; even at finer restaurants. I don't know servers cannot make a habit of this, especially before they leave their station for parts unknown. They will see they're in the weeds less, they'll get better tips and more table turns. This little detail seems to the most overlooked aspect of table-service in my experience. read more

I went here on a Saturday night with a friend. We ordered random rolls, I don't remember what they were called. The sushi was pretty solid, I didn't have any problems with the fish or anything. One thing we didn't like was the miso soup. I'm not sure if it was just the bottom of the soup, but it was extremely salty. Get the green tea ice cream! I left the place needing to lie down so everything could digest. As for the service, I didn't mind that the servers didn't smile. Maybe I'm just used to asian restaurants, but asian restaurants are always known for the food and not the smiles of the servers. No one was rude. Most of the apps are pretty small portion so that's good cause you should really be filling up on their delicious sushi instead of things like fried shrimp and calamari.
