Salmon roll (left), shrimp tempura roll (right) and takoyaki (back)
    Abby M.

I came in on a Sunday around 2pm to grab a bite and do some writing and I was not disappointed. It was nice and quiet at this (admittedly slow) part of the day and the staff were all very kind and responsive. I asked for extra ginger for my sushi and was quickly brought a generous side to my table. I got the shrimp tempura roll, the spicy salmon roll and an order of their takoyaki. The takoyaki was my favorite- crispy outside, creamy inside with discernable chunks of octopus and flavorful sauces. The sushi rolls were nice and fresh but a bit disappointing in terms of flavor- no detectable heat in the spicy salmon and even with the sauces the tempera roll was rather bland. Over all a good meal with great service- I will be interested to come back and try more of the menu.

Bland, stale, crusty, and flavorless. Wasn't super impressed with anything ordered- from the edamame to actual rolls. The pepper tuna was falling apart because the rice was so dry. Would not order again

Fresh fish and quality portions. I was pleased. The prices are great too. You can order at the counter, or sit down for a more traditional eating out style. As far as sushi places go, I think it's pretty average-- not bad by any means but not out of this world.

Glad to have discovered this spot. Tasty, fresh, and generous portions! Workers were super friendly even though it was late at night, and overall had a great takeout experience!

I've been twice now and I love their roll combos. Two rolls and a miso soup (or salad) for under $15? Yes please! And the quality was good both times. For this price range of sushi, you can't find much better than Sushi & Poke. I even asked them to cut the rolls into 8 pieces and they did!

I just missed their lunch special hours by a few minutes, so next time, I need to remember to come in a little earlier. Ordering piecemeal makes for a very pricy lunch otherwise. FIrst off, the staff were really nice and helpful. I opted for the miso soup to heat up my cold, dark heart. That was $2 for a cup. It was very good. Next, I ordered something that sounded different, some kind of mango / crab appetizer, plus one sushi roll of unagi (two pieces). The appetizer was small and bit overly sweet and ice ice cold, baby. These two were close to $6 each. With tip, it came out to around $17. Note to self - come back earlier and make sure to opt for the lunch specials. Very likely worth it and better for my wallet. Also for the record, it was pretty cold inside the restaurant. I kept my coat on the whole time.

Yum! What a great poke spot! Fresh ingredients, great selection and very tasty bowls. I haven't tried the sushi but had yellowtail and white tuna in my bowl and it was fresh and delicious. Definitely a great find in Philly!

Got a create your own poke bowl and crab rangoons. The bowl was decent, am usually sketched about salmon but it was pretty ok and sauced up. Rangoons were mid, kind of in the sweet side and not traditional crab Rangoon sauce, also bordering overly sweet. Wished the bowl was 40% rice 60% toppings but I guess not bad for the price overall.

I love this little spot! The sushi is always so fresh and they have very reasonable prices. The service is fast and super friendly. I highly recommend this place (and I am very picky about my sushi)

Alaska roll + spicy salmon + spicy tuna (i couldn't tell the difference between the spicy rolls, and there is tempura flakes added to fish)
    Elise M.

We ordered for pick up during COVID. They said it would take 45 minutes Which felt a little long, But it was no problem for us. We walked around the neighborhood until the time they said it would be ready and when we showed up to pick it up it was already ready! I ordered a "pick 3" with alaska roll, spicy salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll. The alaska was delicious. Although the spicy salmon and tuna rolls were both good, I couldn't tell the difference between the two...I'm not sure if it was just poor quality fish or if they made a mistake. I personally don't like this sort of spicy (whatever fish) roll, where they puree the fish and add tempura flakes. Adding tempura flakes makes it not gluten free, so they should warn of that! I loved their creamy ginger salad dressing.

Four regular roll combo; crab, spicy salmon, eel and avocado, and shrimp tempura rolls. Two special rolls; tiger and mango to go roll.

We had dinner reservations for 7:45 but got there two hours early because we really wanted to try out their happy hour. Huge selection of food for happy hour and delicious drinks. We waited an hour but were sat and immediately cancelled our dinner reservations because we knew it was about to go down. Fair warning - if you're approaching 40 like us, it's dark, it's loud, and you're sitting on top of people. It will be worth it. We had the double knot roll, spicy tuna roll, BAO, and some drinks. All 10/10. But the real star is the grilled meats. Specifically the scallion ribeye. We tried to take pictures of all of it but it was literally too dark in the restaurant. I would go back and just order ribeye skewers for the entire happy hour. They don't take happy hour reservations but get there early. It's the best.

It is…read moredefinitely very dark inside and I was glad to be seated in the less noisy basement compared with the super noisy bar area on the first floor that also has dinner seating. We sat in a cozy corner booth and could easily hear each other although we could not read the menu or clearly see what we were eating the lighting is so dim (and consistent with the gothic theme). Now onto the food. We ordered 9 dishes (waiter suggested 8) and it was way too much for us and I'm a big eater! Edamame dumplings - 4/5, may be just me, but I don't really enjoy mushy fillings to my dumplings. The broth they came in was amazing though Tuna rice cracker - 4/5, not really a cracker, more like a crunchy mini loaf of rice topped with tuna and a slice of jalapeno - delicious and much more filling than what I was expecting. I only gave a 4 instead of 5/5 for taste because of the unexpected presentation of the "cracker" Shishito pepper small plate - 5*/5 outstanding! I could eat these all day they were so delicious. I'm not sure how they flavor these or what light crunchy sprinkles were on top of this very generous portion of peppers (I would estimate maybe 30 peppers?) I'd go back just for this dish Black cod fried rice - 3/5, I should know better that a miso black cod will be somewhat fishy, and with it spread in chunks throughout the fried rice I'd say this was my least favorite dish. Crispy brussels sprouts - 4/5, a solid offering, not much to write home about Crispy tofu - 3/5, not particularly unique although it sounded amazing when described - cubes of deep fried tofu drizzled with peanut sauce on a bed of cilantro pesto. But not that tasty and not that interesting Scallop robo - 5/5, excellent with a kick from the spicy powder on these, note these are very small portions, three slices of scallop (not even a full scallop or if these were full scallops they were very thin) on a stick Ribeye scallion robo - 5/5, also excellent, with three chunks of tender grilled beef Mochi ice cream: passion fruit, matcha - 4/5, but mostly because I'm not a huge fan of mochi ice cream, I'd rather just have the ice cream or have it with a brownie or between two cookies So overall, service was great, not overly attentive. And the food was very solid with an outstanding exception with the shishito peppers. I'm not sure I'd go back as it is very dark in there and if I was seated on the first floor I'd not be able to have conversation with my dinner mates.

Let me tell y'all something…read more.. I came to Sampan tonight as a party of one, and apparently being alone is the restaurant equivalent of showing up to a cookout without bringing a side dish. Now before I start, let me say this: I'm a huge fan of the owner. Matter of fact, I used to work for him part-time years ago. So writing this review feels like having to tell your favorite aunt that her potato salad got raisins in it. Nobody wants to do it, but the truth is the truth. The night started with them seating me at the prep station bar in the corner. Cool. No problem. I like my peace. I like my solitude. I like pretending I'm a food critic with important opinions. What I don't like is sitting there so long waiting for service that I started considering applying for a job. Nobody greeted me. Nobody checked on me. Nobody even looked concerned that I was aging in real time. When someone finally came over, my place setting wasn't complete. No napkin. No proper setup. Just vibes and uncertainty. I decided to do the chef's tasting because I wanted the full experience. Big mistake. That tasting menu moved faster than a church announcement after the pastor says, "We're running out of time." My server never asked if I'd been there before. Never explained anything. Never guided me through the menu. He was talking so fast I felt like I was taking the SATs. The ceviche was okay. Not bad. Not great. It was there. The cheesesteak bao had less flavor than the hold music at PECO. And here's where things got ridiculous. The bao was greasy enough to lubricate a transmission, and I realized I didn't even have a napkin. Now I'm sitting there looking like I just changed the oil in my car. So I had to flag down the host and ask for a napkin. At this point, I'm wondering if I'm on a hidden-camera show. The rest of the tasting menu showed up one plate at a time, and honestly, most of it was so forgettable I can't remember if I ate it or imagined it. But then... Like an angel descending from heaven... That bronzino arrived. Baby. Listen. That bronzino and those string beans saved the entire evening. That fish walked in like Martin rescuing Gina from another bad decision. Perfectly cooked. Flavorful. Beautiful. For a brief moment, I thought Sampan had turned this thing around. The pork chop was pretty good too. Then the kimchi fried rice came out and said, "Not so fast." Now I've had this dish before, and I know what it's supposed to taste like. Tonight? Absolutely not. I took one bite and immediately started looking around for the version I ordered. It was so disappointing I sent it back. And when dessert time came, I was emotionally unavailable. I declined. Respectfully. I was done. Look, maybe they had an off night. Maybe the staff was overwhelmed. Maybe dining solo just isn't their thing. I don't know. What I do know is that one heroic bronzino shouldn't have to carry an entire restaurant on its back like LeBron in Cleveland. The fish did everything it could. It fought hard. It deserved better teammates. Unfortunately, one MVP performance couldn't save the game. For me, this is probably my last visit.
