I've gotten take out from here a couple times and decided to go back and sit and enjoy the full experience (mostly because of the free mochi..lol). There's something to be said about tiny mom and pop restaurants where the owners are taking care of you. The sushi is definitely great. Very fresh and made with pride and care. I got the love roll and the yam tempura. Love roll was really good. Yam tempura, not so much. The yam was really chewy rather than crispy and had very little flavor. It was edible, but definitely could have been better. I was really impressed with the presentation though. Even in my to go box. I had a few pieces i wanted to take home and he still took the time to make it look nice in the box with that fake grass looking stuff and some more wasabi and ginger. Free mochi and hot tea are an added bonus. This is just a really small, no frills, delicious restaurant. There's a couple tables, but it's mostly just a long counter. Worked to my benefit because i didn't have to feel awkward about going in there alone. Will definitely be back again. read more

My favourite Sushi joint in CT. The restaurant is staffed by one person who is the owner and the sushi chef so if it gets busy there is quite a whiles wait but it is definitely worth it. The restaurant is a nice and small, quiet atmosphere. You can sit at the sushi bar or at a table. The rolls are rolled to perfection and don't break apart when you pick them up with chop sticks. I would recommend the spicy crab, spicy tuna, and sashimi. Mostly everything on the menu is good. Come out and support his small business and enjoy some great sushi! We ordered 4 rolls and an order of salmon sushi to go. went to pick up.. the prices were outrageous. The sushi was of the same quality as stop and shop sushi. It was dry and tasteless. They didn't even give us the soy sauce in little cups.. it was all in the packets, like from the grocery. The man who rung us out was rude. The customer service at this restaurant is phenomenal :) This was me and my husband's first time coming here based entirely upon online reviews, with consideration that the restaurant is located at an offbeat spot. We were promptly seated and thanked many times throughout the duration of our stay for coming to this solo Japanese gentleman's modest, but clean restaurant. The sushi is amazing! They are considerably sizable pieces. We were treated, as an added bonus, with white tuna sushi and moshi ice cream. Delicious! Sushi Red is the best Sushi in the area by far. As some have said there aren't tons of specialty rolls, but he has all the basics covered as well as a nice assortment of nice combos. I don't usually consider the special rolls to be real sushi anyway so this is fine for me. You will never get better service anywhere else. This place is a one man shop, he is very polite and always treats his patrons very well. He often gives you a free piece of white tuna sushi, as well as Mochi at the end all free of charge. Prices are very reasonable, and preparation and food quality is absolutely top notch. Only negatives are the interior decor is nothing to write home about, and since it's just the one chef, if there are a large number of people you may have to wait a little, but that's not something you can really blame him for, as you can see he's making the rolls / sushi as fast as he can. Absolutely the best sushi you can find anywhere in CT. As other reviews have said, it is just one wonderful, polite man taking care of everyone from start to finish, so there may be a wait, but it is well worth it. He is a true sushi chef, and the fish is fresh and delicious. The sushi melts in your mouth. As much green tea as you want is included with your meal, and a delicious mochi at the end as well. Of all the Sushi I've had in CT, Sushi Red is the very best. The owner runs the entire place on his own (although I've seen his [wife?] there before...once). I want to get the negatives out of the way first: -It will take a very long time to get your food if there are multiple parties, he helps you first come-first serve. With the said, order plenty, or you may be waiting for round two. -No water, only hot tea (unless you pay for bottled water) -Not a huge variety of specialty rolls On to the good stuff! -The chef can remember each order (mostly) and does not write anything down, I have occasionally gotten the wrong thing, but he will always correct this by making you the correct roll -The cuts he makes are masterful. He is very generous when ordering Sushi / Sashimi, and the rice is cooked perfectly. My favorite item to get is the Salmon Sushi, it is so buttery (not literally) and delicious! -You often will get free green tea mochi ice cream, although you should never expect it. The surprise is well worth it. -The hot tea is free! -Generous portions when receiving your rolls. The menu will usually give a count (2 pieces sushi, 4 pieces gyoza, etc.) and depending on how busy it is, you may receive a bonus piece, or even something completely different that he recommends you to try. -BYOB, but also be respectful if you're going to drink. Don't leave a mess, and don't get trashed. All in all, this man has done a great job supporting his family, and rewarding his patrons with great service and great sushi. I do not think you can find a place like this anywhere else in CT, I hope it stays open for many more years (or at least until the owner can retire comfortably). I moved across the country from this place, but I always wanted to write a review about the great service I get here. Let me preface this by saying that I am a long-time Yelp user, but a first-time reviewer. I have never had the impulse to sign up and spread the word about a restaurant- until now. I have to say that at this small sushi bar, I received the best service I have ever experienced in my life. Walking into Sushi Red is nothing special. In fact, you might be surprised by the lack of decor. If you are looking for a romantic, luxurious atmosphere, you won't get it. If you are looking for superb sushi and great service you are in the right place! I went there with a co-worker for lunch, and as soon as we walked in, the chef and owner got up and politely showed us to our seats at the bar. We sat down, were immediately served tea, and after a quick glance at the menu we ordered an appetizer, a sushi and sashimi sampler, and a few rolls (Red Lady and Birthday Roll were fantastic) The same man (the owner) who greeted us, and took our orders began preparing our sushi. After a couple of quick minutes, our starters arrived. They tasted wonderful. Immediately after we finished we were served our sushi. The presentation was as perfect as the taste. There is nothing like fresh sushi! While we were eating, the chef - on three occasions- added food to our plates that he had been preparing for us- for FREE! He gave us octopus, mackerel, and once we were finished, some green tea ice cream. Again, these were given to us "on the house." I think the main thing about this place is that the chef is also the owner. The chef takes pride in his work, and his performance directly reflects his business. The owner thanked us (and politely bowed often) every time we complimented the food, and he also thanked us for coming, This is sushi straight from Japan, people "as it should be," without all the Americanized hype! The five stars reflect the great taste, speedy and polite service, and- of course- the complimentary sushi :-) I would recommend this to anyone in the Plainville/New Britain area in a heartbeat! Stopped in here with a group of friends on a Friday night. I was very concerned because the place was tiny and we had a group of five. However, the owner/ chef was not only extremely talented but very friendly. He made all of our food by himself. Not only did he do it quickly but it was amazing and filling. One of the best and fairly priced sushi shops in plainville, phone in your order ahead of time for pick up or sit and dine in. He does get busy at times and you may handle a short wait while he makes other guests their dishes, but you can't rush good sushi. Environment is not formal , come as you are atmosphere. We were asked to sit at a table and the only older man working handed us take out menus, then continued to take care of the other customers already eating. After about 10 minutes we were finally asked what we'd like to order. We placed our food order and asked for a drink, he pointed to the cooler. We had to get our own bottled drinks out of the cooler. We went the Saturday night before Easter....When we arrived, we were the only customers there. We took the opportunity to sit at the counter and talk to the owner/server/chef. We started with seaweed salad-Yum! Then, I opted for the medium sashimi platter (trying to watch the carbs) and my husband opted for two specialty rolls. The sashimi platter was great, and the owner was nice enough to complete a mixture of wasabi and soy for optimal dunking. My husband loved both of the rolls--I forget the names. I will definitely return here for sushi. Since Sushi Palace became AYCE, I feel the quality of the food has decreased. Sushi Red is definitely worth the money. For apps we ordered edamame and seaweed salad and dinner - the Salmon roll, Philadelphia roll, sunset roll and American roll, which was our favorite. The place is in a nondescript shopping center but don't be fooled. The food is top notch and made to order; we sat at the counter and watched. You also get complimentary tea and mochi- and we had a few extra Nigiri on our plates. Prices very reasonable compared to the more expensive Hartford and West Hartford prices we are used to. Some of the best sushi that I've had in CT. Place looks very simple but its all about the quality of the food. I had the tuna and salmon sushi combo. The rice really is cooked perfectly compared to other mass produced sushi placed out there. The fish is very fresh and they give a generous portion of it atop the rice. The one sushi chef there is friendly and gave us a few extra pieces which is always a plus. This place is byob which I actually prefer. Bottom line this place is simple, with fresh quality sushi. I finally got around to trying out this gem! I moved here from a city where good sushi was easy to find...since moving to CT it has been a struggle. I can honestly say that my search is over! I placed a take out order of spicy tuna roll, spicy California roll, shrimp tempura and the yam tempura. What surprised me the most (and this has been mentioned in several reviews) is that the spicy tuna actually has a kick and it was amazing! We didn't love the yam tempura, but no biggie! The main rolls were fresh tasting and I was especially impressed with the size of the rolls. Sushi Red will be my go to sushi place from now on! read more
