Note: On Yelp I review exclusively sushi bars. The bar is small, seating four. It is not particularly inspiring, but serviceable. The sushi was served two pieces to an order, a plus a single large piece is difficult to eat in a single bite. The selection of fish was limited to the standards and the quality was average (wasn't very firm and a little too warm). The chef's skill was fine, and he was friendly enough. The rice was a fairly good batch though and not too sweet; I enjoyed it. Service from the wait staff was fine. This is not a place to travel to, but if you live in the neighborhood and just need a quick sushi fix it is nice. Very, very BAD experience. Worst take away service you can ever imagine. We ordered (my family) a take away and they forgot to put ginger and wasabi inside. (After we asked for it few times!) Then when we called them back to report the error they refused to send it to us. Asking us to come and pick it up (again)! We said that the baby is already sleeping and since it was their mistake they should take the responsibility for it but guess what - they refused. When we asked to cancel the order, they asked us to bring them back the food and only then get our money back. Unbelievable! Honestly - WORST SERVICE EVER. Terrible. I don't know how this restaurant can even have 4 stars. I've tried this place 3 times and each time it has been disgusting. The service is ok. The food is absolutely gross. I've had the sushi each time and each time the quality of the fish, rice, and vegetable have smelled spoiled or tasted prepackaged. We have been going to Sushi Republic for over 20 years and although the quality of the food is good, the portions have shrunk! The salmon skin hand roll is half the size of what it used to be as well as the tekka rolls. I did not check my food order before I picked it up but I must say that I was extremely disappointed once I got home. The cup previously utilized where the miso soup came in for delivery or pick up, held approximately 12 ounces. When I arrived and saw the tiny container I literally measured it into a cup and it measured 6 ounces. I am not being nitpicky I just wanted to emphasize the difference in the portions. This does not mean I will not go back, perhaps next time I will eat in, but I was so- so- so disappointed, and still hungry, that I had to let all the yelpers know. read more

So Sushi Republic has been sticking with their original delivery guy and the sushi has been arriving fresh,,in good shape and within 30-45 minutes. They always remember my extra wasabi and ginger. I am still loving the spicy shrimp soup and when I order brown rice with one item and white rice with another,,that is exactly how it arrives. They are always friendly and YES their Delivery is FREE!!! Someone mentioned it was not and they are wrong! The only thing I should warn about is that their prices did just go up although they are not unreasonable still. Authentic to a fault, my favorite sushi joynt in Miami. Fresh selections of fish and attention to the tiniest detail in presentation makes Sushi Republic a true gem in the shadow of the glitzy food being served in nearby Bal Harbor Shops. It is my preference to order "omakase" - literally, letting the chefs decide the fish. That said, some of the best appetizers include: Age Tofu (fried tofu in a sweet-ish sauce); Crispy Calamari (served w ponzu); Negimaki (which for Sushi Republic is actually meat wrapped around the "negi"//scallions); Chicken Katsu (chicken cutlet that is battered in a very light Japanese breading); Hamachikama (Yellowtail Jaw that is grilled & often you can ask for a sweet miso sauce); Narutomaki (sweet vinegar with crab & avocado) & finally, the Futo-maki ("big roll"). As for sushi, my advice is order the fish you know you like and make sure the chefs know what you don't like. I am not a big eater of "hikarimono" (shiny fish, like mackerel); but, this is the one place I enjoy it when it is available. There are few interesting selections that are seasonal as well. Morokyu has been available and you can always order that Japanese child favorite drink, Ramune (no the marble won't end up in your mouth. I usually am too full for desserts but Andrew Z. is right, the tempura ice cream is great (in fact, if you enjoy tempura, as with the "katsu" they batter is light and perfect for all of the tempura dishes served).
