We ordered the 13 piece omakase for $100/person, which is not too bad. It includes 3 small plates/appetizers and 13 pieces of sushi. It was good but I don't know about "bomb." I think I had a "wow" moment maybe twice. I was expecting uni but it wasn't included unfortunately. I think we would have had a much better experience if the atmosphere was not so boring and dead. This is a tiny restaurant, 7 seats at the bar and about 4 tables, with only two workers, the chef/owner and waitress. The chef/owner does not interact with you at all, not even a greeting, so it was a bit weird. He's in his own zone. The waitress was friendly, nice, and attentive. They played some random country music. It didn't fit the scene. Maybe they should add a tv or something- or candles to make the place more lively because it just felt a bit awkward being there. Omg. Came here for my birthday celebration with hubby and it was melt in your mouth delicious. We got the omakase $100 deal. My favorite was the scallops & golden eye snapper. So I don't care for uni so much and this place made me love it. I'll just be getting uni here from now on. We also ordered sake but I forgot which kind it was. It paired really well with each sushi. I found Tanaka because I like trying new sushi restaurants in search of new favorites/alternatives, and the Yelp reviews sounded like just what I was looking for. Super-high-quality traditional sushi served by an Itamae who really knows what he's doing. Based on other reviews he used to work at Nobu, and it shows. I had Omakase, which is really the way to go at a place like this. The hostess asked if there was anything I don't eat, which is a thoughtful touch. Each bite was better than the last. It's not particularly cheap, and if you want American-style combo rolls, you should look elsewhere. If you are looking for a uber-fresh traditional sushi experience in Simi, I know of no better place. read more

This is hands down the most authentic and delicious sushi restaurant in or near Simi. We had the $60 Omakase. Unbelievable! The red snapper, oysters, salmon, and blue fin toro were the freshest and most delectable pieces of sashimi I have ever tasted. This place is entirely worth the money. I will never go to Blue Fin, Musashi, or Ken of Japan again! Not that these places were ever that great to begin with, but the drastic difference of freshness and quality is even more apparent now that I have had Sushi Tanaka. If you want "authentic" Japanese sushi with flavors that will blow you away this is the place. The chef is not trying to fit into the American sushi mold. So if you want rolls, sauces and fish that all taste the same then take your money elsewhere. We had the chefs choice for $100. Everything we had was unique, fresh and artfully plated. I would do this once a month before I will do ACE again (my husband and I have sushi once a week.. NO MORE. This chef belongs in Hollywood or LA (which is where he came from). My husband and I came here a couple of weeks ago and I was skeptical because I was so committed to the previous owners ...we were die hard fans and weekly visitors ..so sad when it suddenly changed hands. Anyway we thought we would give it a try and although we knew nothing about this type of dining experience we headed on in and were greeted very warmly but told because we did not have a reservation we would have to come back in an hour ( it's a tiny place).....not a problem because it was early evening. An hour later we returned and were seated,the decor and ambiance are calming,modern and comfortable and our server(I wish I had noted her name) was super lovely. We opted for the pre determined menu ( $100 per person ) because we were not familiar with this type of sushi dining and as they do not serve tempura.sushi rolls ,binto boxes or edamame ...all the typical stuff..... we knew this was going to be very different so we wanted to experience everything as new. WOW!!! and more WOW!!!....all I can say is that this place ( as tiny as it is) WIPES THE FLOOR with the likes of high end restaurants such as Nobu. This is a fine dining ,delicate palate, sensual delight ....and you will not be disappointed!! Every piece of sashimi (as small as it was) was AMAZING!! the unique flavours the chef combined just defied the senses.We had about 15 different combinations each, some sashimi and some sushi ,some fish that had just come into season ,most I didn't even know the names of...but all out of this world!!. If I had a negative (and it really isn't one) is that you have to be prepared to be there for some time...you do not rush this artistry...we savored and salivated for three hours...but then again it didn't seem like it because we were so enjoying a completely amazing evening. I cannot express enough how unique and special this place is ,for a very special occasion ( our 30th wed anniversary) it was more than worth the price tag (high)..yes just be prepared for the bill...we didn't look because the evening was priceless!
