Miso soup, seaweed salad, mango roll

Fresh, fresh food! Their dipping sauces are also amazing. They are a small place, but they pack a lot of flavor. The service is fast and friendly, offering miso soup appetizer.

Absolutely fantastic food, friendly service, my boys were very impressed, five stars.

I was looking for a nice and low budget lunch place, and stumbled into this cute little sushi restaurant. The place is fairly small, however it's about the normal side of all sushi places. It has a L shape bar with a couple tables for groups of two and four. They have an intensive menu on their special sushi rolls, as well as sushi combos. I ordered the sashimi combo on their lunch combo as I was craving for sashimi. It included two pieces of salmon and tuna sashimi, fairly good size, 8 pieces of dynamite rolls, green salad and chicken or beef teriyaki. The portion is pretty big, and I couldn't even finish the whole box. The miso soup was also included. All the ingredient were made fresh, and they are pretty generous with their portion. There are two chefs working in the kitchen, a serve takes orders and serve the table. She came to check on me a few times, offered to top up my tea, very friendly. They also have other lunch combos which priced very reasonable as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who's a sushi lover. Maybe next time I'll come and try their special rolls.

I love this place! It has that mom and pop restaurant feel where they treat you like friends and family. It's a very great secret gem! It's very small inside. Literally an equivalent of a sushi bar style from Japan! The sushi is very fresh and the prices are super cheap! I highly recommend trying this place here as you really get your money worth and the quality is amazing!

Black Tiger Roll & Wakame Salad

Wow indeed. The prices make it look like a cheap basic sushi place, but this is legit good stuff! The menu is good value all around, but the prices for the combos in particular are insane, it's tons of sushi for the price of what could be one roll at comparable restaurants. Also the menu is huge with lots of interesting options, including special rolls with brown and black rice, and many vegetarian rolls. Sushi was what I was interested in, but there are plenty of entrees besides just sushi. I ordered and picked up takeout for a hang with some friends. I changed my mind about the roll I wanted in the middle of the call to order and then had to call back to add something I missed, but the person on the phone stayed very friendly and patient, which is amazing because I would've given myself a headache. I got the Black Tiger Roll and a Wakame Salad. I was drawn to this mainly because I wanted to try something with black rice, and the wasabi tobiko sounded interesting. It was very good! Besides just a nice combination of flavours, the ingredients seemed to be of good quality. The wakame was just what you'd expect but it was done right. Again, both the portion size and quality are above what you might expect at this price. I don't live near the Marpole area at all which is a shame because I would love to keep coming back and trying different rolls. If we ever have a get together at this friend's place again I will definitely be suggesting this place again though, and I don't think anyone will object since we were all really impressed.

Sashimi lunch box only $14.95. Also came with soup. Dynamite roll was huge!

Really enjoyed our visit to Sushi Wow. Small, basic place but great service and exceptional value. Lunch box came with so many things and generous portions. Miso soup so flavourful and chicken teriyaki was delicious. We dug the all female sushi chef vibe!

    Yam Crazy Combo

Probably my favorite sushi spot in the Marpole neighbourhood, always consistent quality (especially like their sushi rice + vinegar ratio) Covid protocols in place, max 3 people in the store at once, menu also placed on exterior glass for ease of navigation. I got the Yam Crazy Combo this time, consists of spicy yam roll, mango yam roll (?) & yam cone. Impressed by the cone's filling to rice ratio, most places just fill majority of cone with rice, this one had filling all the way down. Tip - check your order status inside in reasonable time frame, typically ready sooner than the 10-15mins as quoted, server won't be coming out to flag you!

Everything about this restaurant is already said in the name: wow. Wow Combo: $8.95/22 pieces + miso soup. The Wow combo includes yam, cali, and tuna rolls. Fresh, authentic, and affordable sushi - what else can you ask for. Would recommend take-out because the restaurant is a bit too cozy for dine-in. xx Ren

I've been to Sushi Wow various times since it's in my neighbourhood but realized I've never written a review! It's a hole in the wall but definitely a favourite of mine. It's reasonably priced and quality is always consistent. They have a great selection of special rolls and combos. This time I got take out for a picnic and tried the Black Dragon roll which is made with black rice and it was quite tasty.

This is a small restaurant with a couple small tables and most of the seating at the bar. It was busy when we got here, but I think it was a time when people were just finishing up so it became emptier soon after we we're seated. I ordered some basic rolls. Just the negitoro roll and chopped scallop roll. My friend recommended the combos, which are really filling or their special rolls. Personally, I don't really like a lot of sauce on my rolls so I just stuck with the basics. The food came out not too long after ordering. I liked how they gave plenty of ginger. The chopped scallop was good, but there was too much cucumber in the roll. A couple pieces I'd say were almost 1/3 chopped scallop and 2/3 cucumber. Negitoro was just ok. Prices are decent here and quality is alright. Maybe I just didn't order the right things, so I wasn't really wowed by the sushi.

    Hi L.

Came here on friend's recommendation but karage & teriyaki chicken looked like left overs that had been refried. Not edible, tossed out most of it. Tuna roll was ok. This was the lunch special (until 3pm) but because I paid for it (literally 4.41 minutes) after 3pm, I was charged the dinner price. Would have been ok if it was had been cooked fresh!

Ordered through SkipTheDishes, and while it took long, it was communicated during the order process. Worth the wait! The food was well packaged for travel and arrived beautiful with presentation and garnish. My favourite was the Sushi Pizza and the Dynamite roll. The tempura was amazing and it wasn't over filled with fake crab. The fish on the sushi pizza was fresh and delicious.

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

People who haven't been to an izakaya may think it's loud and noisy, but the point of izakayas is they're supposed to be vibrant, high energy, and filled with cheerful chatter. Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
