I ordered some sushi to go. I absolutely love the packaging and care that went into making the rolls. 2 speciality rolls for 32 dollars is a great steal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside was clean and charming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There wasn't much of a wait time, however I was given a free drink. That was very sweet of them, I will have to come back.

Chirashi

Melt in your mouth chirashi and incredible staff all around. Kindly helped pack my leftovers, and gifted a bottle of Smart Water on my way out the door. Frequent checks for any need. Excellent. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Don't let the outside fool you![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Finally stopped in to try this place. I'm very glad I did! Initially, I was surprised that the menus online are outdated and not only have the prices increased, but also, new items were added and some items have changed its ingredients or set. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance: doesn't look like much on the exterior, but the interior is cute and cozy bar setting with only a couple of small tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I went right at opening time on a weekday. The place was empty, so I was able to choose any seat at the bar and interact a bit with the owners who were kind and thoughtful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food: I've tried several Sushi establishments in the Tacoma area and have been disappointed for various reasons, mainly due to the rice not being seasoned well. This place got it right! Although it was just a tad on the sweet side, it is almost perfection! The seasoning has a wonderful balance of sweet, salty, and tangy flavors that enhance anything it marries. The fish was fresh, for the most part; however, I could taste and smell the tuna used in the Spicy Tuna Roll is on the verge of becoming a fried roll ingredient, as it was not as fresh as the other fish. The Crabmeat Jalapeno was tasty, but slightly oversauced. Now, what surprised me was the Miso Soup. I've probably had hundreds of cups of Miso Soup, which is really very basic, so how does anyone improve it? Again, don't be afraid to season it well and make it shine. This place does it. Service: second to none thus far since relocating to Tacoma. They were kind enough to allow me to sustitute Spicy Tuna Roll in place of California Roll. The owner had forgotten about the substitution, but corrected it immediately and comped the Cali roll. I ended up ordering food to go. When I thought the owner had brought my takeout items, I realized that he had brought a huge apple and Asian Pear as a servce! Who does that? These amazing and generous owners! I'm so happy to say I am now a regular customer! Great job Sushi Ya! :)

Red Spider Roll & Salmon Lemon in the back. My faves!

Small Mom&Pop shop in Lakewood, by the Towne Center. They have a long bar and only 2 tables. I wouldn't suggest going with a large group. However, I would order a party platter to go- see my photo of the menu. Positives: The sushi tastes clean and fresh. The attention to detail on the presentation is like art. The rolls come out so pretty! The chef really cares. The miso soup has tons of umami. They offer a variety of sushi - unlike others where they have lots of different named sushi rolls but they basically all taste the same. Negatives: Fried food is just ok. I've had the shrimp tempura and the fried oysters. Both of which had thick batter and small shrimp/oyster. The oysters could've used an aioli. Recommend- Red Spider Roll, Salmon Lemon, and the Amazing roll.

Hot Night Owl Roll and Caterpillar Roll

I had a wonderful experience at this sushi place ! Fair prices for amazing quality sushi. The owners are so nice and accommodating. The menu has lots of different varieties of rolls / sashimi/nigiri , plus appetizers and other main dishes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself is very clean and easy parking.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I recommend the gyozas , hot night roll , caterpillar roll and unagi don. 10/10 experience !!!

I had driven by so many times with a bit of curiosity as to what restaurant would possibly want to fill the old Baskin-Robbin's ice cream spot. I finally stopped in and had the best experience. The service was amazing. They start you off with edamame and miso soup, which I find most places are now charging for these days. The salad and roll I had were great. I had such a good experience that I came back the next week and they even remembered me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Seating is limited so keep that in mind.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommend you give them a try.

Sushi and sashimi love

If there were more stars I could give, I would. From the moment you walk in until you leave they make you feel like you are sitting down to dinner with them. They are so kind. The food was SPECTACULAR!! so fresh and well curated. I got the yellowtail jalapeno sashimi in their house ponzu sauce and every bite melted in my mouth. I the ordered the sushi love platter which came with an assortment of sashimi and sushi as well as spicy tuna roll. It was so fresh and well prepared. Each piece was perfectly cut, the sushi didn't have an over bearing amount of rice which I love because I want to taste the fish. They top it with fresh raw wasabi which really added to the mouth feel. I also received complimentary miso and edamame , a nice touch. I had god conversation with the sushi chef and really enjoyed the whole experience. I will be back with more people!

Food is fresh and tasty. It is one of the few good places to enjoy sushi. Service was slow due to someone's big take out order. Ambiance is good, small place, but clean. Although it was a slow service due to no fault of their own, I still give them 4 stars, which makes up for the food.

Pick 3 for $32. Philly is my favorite

First time eating here. Small family run sushi place with very fresh and delicious food. We were served miso soup and edamame while waiting for our sushi which was a wonderful surprise. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Will definitely be back

5 out of 5 AYCE for sure! First time visiting Sumo Sushi & Grill last weekend with my family and we…read morehad such a great experience! (FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

Below average. In…read morefact, if I had visited the Sumo AYCE in Tacoma before I tried the one in Burlington, I doubt I would have ever walked into Burlington's Sumo. It was Father's Day, so of course it was busy. But the food was subpar, it came out in indefinable intervals, and we weren't really checked on at all. The sushi - when it finally showed up - was good, but the grilled beef was fatty and greasy. The Chicken 'Katsu' was soggy. Some items - despite taking what seemed like forever to arrive - felt and tasted like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. Horrible experience for $100. We won't be back.
