I stopped here on a Friday night for a solo dinner. I was the only one in the restaurant. I ended up having some of the best sushi I've had in the U.S. I ordered the yellowtail lover which had spicy crabmeat, spicy yellowtail, avocado, cucumber, and jalapeño. I devoured it so quickly, it was amazing. I will 100% stop here again. The miso soup and edamame were included and were also delicious. The young girl working also gave me an orange slice which I think was just her being friendly. She and the older couple making the food were so friendly and kind. Service was impeccable, food was delicious, and ambience was very calm and clean. This is a wonderful place to stop if you're craving sushi and living in the area. Such a cute little spot! We only planned to stop in for a quick lunch and a small bite, but... yeah, that plan did not stick. The place was super welcoming, and you can tell right away the fish is fresh. They started us off with miso soup and edamame on the house, which was such a nice touch. We ordered the Super Dragon Roll and the Spider Roll--both were great. We also tried the Super Crunch, which was just okay compared to the rainbow Roll. The real surprise though? The green mussels. Absolutely divine. To top it all off, they brought us peeled orange slices at the end, and it was the perfect, refreshing finish to the meal. Came in for a quick lunch, left very full and very happy. Finally stopped in to try this place. I'm very glad I did! Initially, I was surprised that the menus online are outdated and not only have the prices increased, but also, new items were added and some items have changed its ingredients or set. Ambiance: doesn't look like much on the exterior, but the interior is cute and cozy bar setting with only a couple of small tables. I went right at opening time on a weekday. The place was empty, so I was able to choose any seat at the bar and interact a bit with the owners who were kind and thoughtful. Food: I've tried several Sushi establishments in the Tacoma area and have been disappointed for various reasons, mainly due to the rice not being seasoned well. This place got it right! Although it was just a tad on the sweet side, it is almost perfection! The seasoning has a wonderful balance of sweet, salty, and tangy flavors that enhance anything it marries. The fish was fresh, for the most part; however, I could taste and smell the tuna used in the Spicy Tuna Roll is on the verge of becoming a fried roll ingredient, as it was not as fresh as the other fish. The Crabmeat Jalapeno was tasty, but slightly oversauced. Now, what surprised me was the Miso Soup. I've probably had hundreds of cups of Miso Soup, which is really very basic, so how does anyone improve it? Again, don't be afraid to season it well and make it shine. This place does it. Service: second to none thus far since relocating to Tacoma. They were kind enough to allow me to sustitute Spicy Tuna Roll in place of California Roll. The owner had forgotten about the substitution, but corrected it immediately and comped the Cali roll. I ended up ordering food to go. When I thought the owner had brought my takeout items, I realized that he had brought a huge apple and Asian Pear as a servce! Who does that? These amazing and generous owners! However, I would order a party platter to go- see my photo of the menu. Positives: The sushi tastes clean and fresh. The attention to detail on the presentation is like art. The rolls come out so pretty! The chef really cares. The miso soup has tons of umami. They offer a variety of sushi - unlike others where they have lots of different named sushi rolls but they basically all taste the same. Negatives: Fried food is just ok. I've had the shrimp tempura and the fried oysters. Both of which had thick batter and small shrimp/oyster. The oysters could've used an aioli. We had a special tuna roll and a bento box. Both were fairly good, but not especially so. Decent portions, but a bit spendy for the quality. We would return if in the neighborhood, but probably not drive down again from Tacoma just to dine here again. Small splits of decent cold sake were a bit spendy ($12). I had driven by so many times with a bit of curiosity as to what restaurant would possibly want to fill the old Baskin-Robbin's ice cream spot. I finally stopped in and had the best experience. If there were more stars I could give, I would. From the moment you walk in until you leave they make you feel like you are sitting down to dinner with them. They are so kind. The food was SPECTACULAR!! so fresh and well curated. I got the yellowtail jalapeno sashimi in their house ponzu sauce and every bite melted in my mouth. I the ordered the sushi love platter which came with an assortment of sashimi and sushi as well as spicy tuna roll. It was so fresh and well prepared. Each piece was perfectly cut, the sushi didn't have an over bearing amount of rice which I love because I want to taste the fish. They top it with fresh raw wasabi which really added to the mouth feel. I also received complimentary miso and edamame , a nice touch. I was greeted by the wife who is the waitress and the husband made the chef. First look at the menu, the price is very reasonable. You can pick 2 speciality rolls for $29 and it also comes with complimentary edamame and miso soup which I really didn't expect. The ambiance of the restaurant is small but very clean. Wow! This place is so amazing! I found out that they opened up in May 2024 and I got to visit today because I was craving sushi! The staff are so wonderful and kind and make you feel at home. It's a small restaurant with 1-2 group tables and the rest are bar seating, but it's clean and comfortable inside! My husband and I ordered their $19 special, which had 3-4 different options, but the one we chose came with two miso soups and two different types of sushi (fried tempura and spicy California I think?). We also got the Hawaiian Roll and the Super Crunch. We ordered to go but the quality was still so fresh & perfect. We were filled after sharing 4 different types of sushi. I am very impressed with everything about Sushi Ya! It is a small, intimate place and most of the seating is at the bar. We had little ones with us so we sat at the one table near the window. The two tvs were playing calming nature shows and there is a little bit of instrumental music. The decor is very comfortable and it was warm and inviting. The sushi was really good! I had the crunch roll and the Hawaiian, my husband had the sushi and sashimi love and our other party had the amazing and shrimp tempura. He raved about the wasabi and I will take his word for it. The presentation was also very nice. I feel like you rarely see people take such care in plating but they knocked it out if the park! There were flowers and fruit decoratively cut on each plate. At the end of the meal they brought out freshly cut oranges for each of us. The most important thing for me was how the staff treated the children in our party. I pulled up to this spot questioning why it got a 5 star rating, being real, it's a sketchy looking area from the outside... but going inside it's like being teleported to a different center. It was my husband's and I date night, we started off with some hot sake. We got the baked green mussels and yellowtail jalapeño app. Our server gave us complimentary miso soup and edamame as well. Everything was so delicious, the toppings on the yellowtail to the baked green mussels. All prepared carefully and beautifully. Our main rolls were the avatar roll, delicious is you are a salmon avocado and hamachi person. As well as the salmon lemon roll. -this has to be one of my favorite rolls, only thing id do different is take the crab meat out and sub hamachi. But 10/10 shoot even 100. I regret not taking any photos for you, but you've gotta just stop in and try it for yourself. Most places don't get their rice right but they've got theirs on lock. & the portion size is reasonable and a great meat to rice ratio. They've earned a regular today.
