Happy Hour!
Joy L.

We're regulars here and always enjoy coming in for a few rolls! They offer AYCE at both the sushi bar and the dine-in area, which makes it a fun experience every time. Because of the convenient location, this has become our weekly sushi spot -- they already know our order by heart! I can usually only manage three rolls (unlike my other half, who can easily do six or more ), but it's always a great time. The staff are friendly, the service is consistently great, and we always feel welcomed. Love seeing familiar faces every visit!

Salmon Skin

We didn't know the place closed in less than 30 mins but the workers were still delighted to make our food so well and had good service. We got 5 rolls and they were all amazing. Also, the edamame was a very reasonable price. I will be going back.

Review: I called the next day and the manger made it right. He was very kind and was a big help. only thing good was the miso soup. ordered chicken teriyaki and this is what it looked like. The hell is this?!?! Never have I ever seen children teriyaki like this. And it wasn't even good. So disappointed and will not be going back.

Best Calamari!

First time back after the Pandemic was last week. They have a happy hour special $27 (?) for 3 rolls starting at 2pm. I was excited for the deal. However, there isn't much diversity with any of the sushi rolls. 90% has spicy crab mixture, tempura crumbs, fried tempura, teriyaki sauce or cream cheese! I like my sushi fresh on top of a roll and it's hard to find here. The one I did get with Tuna on top was very thin. The 3 rolls I got tasted the same after the 3rd piece. So if you come for AYCE or sushi rolls, beware they all taste the same. So the good news is I went again to give them another chance. The restaurant itself is clean and nice. I walked in at 11am. No one greeted me but the sushi chefs were busy prepping. My hopes were not set high this time but I gave it a go. This time ordering a Salmon Bento (sauce on side) and a Phoenix roll. Pros: FOOD WAS COOKED FRESH. APPS WERE HOT. Calamari was so tender and had a thin crisp batter. All tentacles! Amazing. This calamari was one of the best I've had in a while. Not frozen not all rings. Not hard and chewy. Salmon was moist and perfectly flaky. Tempura was great. Con: Can't differentiate between rolls. All ingredients the same. Not very tasty. The Phoenix roll SOUNDED good on paper but I didn't taste any of the ingredients listed, nothing exciting there. Takeaway is I would come again for lunch and order the calamari a bento and stick to ordering one roll. If you order one roll you've tasted it all.

We decided to give Trappers a try because we had a 20% off coupon. My partner really liked his chicken teriyaki, so he was happy, but they forgot our edamame and when it finally came out it was not cooked very well and was very cold. I had a vegetable roll which was fine, but the sushi rice could have been cooked with some more flavor. The miso was very tasty and they have a decent happy hour. I did not feel like it was traditional Japanese, but I might stop by for the happy hour again.

Food pretty good. Skywalker not as good as usual but okay. Service though, not good. Specifically Christina C. Told her up front about an allergy and should said she added a note. Second round though, didn't tell the chef and waited until I was just about to dig in before telling me that it contained what I couldn't eat. Then blamed me for not saying who it was for... even though I ordered it? Didn't remake it or take it off the bill. I let it slide that she ignored us most of the night and didn't refill drinks, but that was too much!

Rainbow Roll

I've been going to Trapper's since they've only had one location in Bonney Lake. My last order from the Tacoma 6th Ave location was very disappointing. Comparing the sushi from back then to now is night and day. The nigiri pieces were thicker and the rolls were made better. For the price I'm paying it's time to try sushi outside of Trapper's.

Today I came to Tacoma and visited a Japanese restaurant that's been open since 1984. I had high…read moreexpectations, but since I wasn't particularly hungry, I sat down with a casual mindset, just planning to have a light meal. After finishing, my biggest takeaway was: how has this place managed to stay open for so long? Environment: The place is clean, and both the sushi counter and the freshness of the ingredients are evident to the eye. The chefs' uniforms are also very neat. Taste: Sorry, it's hard to put into words! I ordered the lunch combo. The server asked how I wanted my beef done, and I said medium rare would be fine. But the beef was really tough! The tempura was okay. My friend had the pork cutlet rice bowl--the cutlet wasn't crispy, and the sauce was poured directly on top instead of being served on the side as we requested. So neither of us finished our food and we left. Fun fact: Tempura, though it's deep-fried, actually has the second-lowest calorie count among all Japanese dishes. So what's the lowest? Sorry, I forgot. A long time ago, Japan was considered the end of the continent, so many things that made their way there were seen as reaching the ultimate destination. As a result, the Japanese would thoroughly study everything that came--whether it was swords, food, tea ceremony, etc.--which eventually gave rise to what we now call craftsmanship or the spirit of mastery.

I'm obsessed with this restaurant. I've been for dinner and lunch. It's hard to find FRESH sushi…read morearound Tacoma but this place delivers. You'll often see the owner, Jose, making the sushi orders himself. He was trained by a Japanese sushi chef who in turn was trained in Japan. The ingredients are very clean and the portions are a good value. The sashimi slices are thick! The scallops are velvet in your mouth. The tempura is cooked perfectly. The sushi roll selections are unique and not like other places that just offer the same flavor. Have you ever ordered a couple rolls and they're basically the same? That won't happen here. Service was fast during the lunch rush. Server was friendly. No complaints. The restaurant is clean and the building it's in has a lot of character and history being in DT. Con: One thing I will ding them on is their Tonkatsu. I've had the Tonkatsu plate and the Donburi. Both times they were overcooked and dry. Come for the sushi!

5 out of 5 AYCE for sure! First time visiting Sumo Sushi & Grill last weekend with my family and we…read morehad such a great experience! (FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

I'm going to preface this review by saying that this is not the type of place I would normally come…read moreto myself. That being said it was still a good experience! The food was tasty and plentiful and there were lots of options for someone like myself who doesn't eat much seafood, so that was really great! The wait staff was very friendly and helpful and answered lots of my questions. So here's the part that I found frustrating It seemed unnecessarily complicated. I acknowledge that I'm not used to the way a sushi buffet restaurant is set up, so it could be a "me" thing. That being said, it was very complicated. We had a large group, and they wanted everyone who was on the same dinner plan to be at the same table. Okay, we can do that. Then we can only use one device to order from. So we had to pass the phone around to have everybody order. Up to 15 items per table every 15 minutes. Any one of these things wouldn't be a big deal, but there seemed to be so many complicated rules that it truly felt a bit like work. In the end, I went there for a friend's birthday and had a great time. Left very full of delicious food and good memories, so that's all that mattered. Still would recommend.
