5 out of 5 AYCE for sure! First time visiting Sumo Sushi & Grill last weekend with my family and we had such a great experience! (FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back! read more

Below average. In fact, if I had visited the Sumo AYCE in Tacoma before I tried the one in Burlington, I doubt I would have ever walked into Burlington's Sumo. It was Father's Day, so of course it was busy. But the food was subpar, it came out in indefinable intervals, and we weren't really checked on at all. The sushi - when it finally showed up - was good, but the grilled beef was fatty and greasy. The Chicken 'Katsu' was soggy. Some items - despite taking what seemed like forever to arrive - felt and tasted like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. Horrible experience for $100. We won't be back. read more

Very happy I was finally able to try this place for the first time! in the past it never worked out with the wait times since this place is so popular. We came on a weekday for lunch and it was still very busy and packed! Of course got the all you can eat and it was a great experience. Our server was very friendly and let us know that we could place an order for up to 15 items each time. There is also a buffet bar with warm foods, salad and sides. Honestly, I was very impressed with the variety of dishes available from rice/meat dishes to noodles and appetizers such as chicken karage and takoyaki. We tried as many things as we could, but did not make it through the huge menu! Everything tasted good and I'm excited to come back. Very easy location for parking. read more

So disappointing... we came for their soft opening years ago and didn't like it but we decided to give it another chance. So expensive for the quality you're getting and there's an additional restaurant/service fee or something yet no one ever comes to your table to check on you. Hot food bar AND food from the kitchen are bland and COLD. Sushi is mid. Their drinks and hot bar barely have anything in it (needs to be restocked or it's old and cold). Save your money. read more

Decided to give this place another shot and certainly didn't regret it! An older gentleman, maybe the manager, is kind and greeting at the front. I went at a quieter time on the weekday, and he was keeping the place clean and singing to the song on the speaker, very sweet. The establishment is clean and food comes out fresh and quick. They have a few new additions to the menu compared to last year. One of my favorite things to get on the menu is the mango roll and grilled beef, and their menu is very accommodating to any allergies as well. I will be stopping by again! read more

Service What can I say about a robot bringing you food. The humans were there just to refill water or other things that the robot didn't do. The human servers had more time to refill drinks and take care of anything else. Ambiance Clean and positive environment. I recommend anyone that like sushi and things like that to eat there. Food was very well prepared and fish was fresh. Very tasty. They have food out at a food bar (which was good), but the items you can order and they prepare in the back is really the star of the menu. Plates and servings are small but perfect when trying multiple items out. You can always order a second serving if you really like something. Be prepared if your first time visiting, they have robots bringing out your order so that is fun. You'll need to order via the QR code/web browser....took this older guy a bit to figure out. Also all you can eat, and can't order ala carte so everyone needs to be hungry ;-) Atmosphere is comfy and clean Human staff was very friendly and the robots are fun to interact with. I'm going to preface this review by saying that this is not the type of place I would normally come to myself. That being said it was still a good experience! The food was tasty and plentiful and there were lots of options for someone like myself who doesn't eat much seafood, so that was really great! The wait staff was very friendly and helpful and answered lots of my questions. So here's the part that I found frustrating It seemed unnecessarily complicated. I acknowledge that I'm not used to the way a sushi buffet restaurant is set up, so it could be a "me" thing. That being said, it was very complicated. We had a large group, and they wanted everyone who was on the same dinner plan to be at the same table. Okay, we can do that. Then we can only use one device to order from. So we had to pass the phone around to have everybody order. Up to 15 items per table every 15 minutes. Any one of these things wouldn't be a big deal, but there seemed to be so many complicated rules that it truly felt a bit like work. In the end, I went there for a friend's birthday and had a great time. Left very full of delicious food and good memories, so that's all that mattered. Still would recommend. read more

I cannot recall the last time I was this disappointed and disgusted with a meal. We had lunch here. The food was so disappointing. I literally got nauseous at the sight of the grilled beef and fried noodle "teppanyaki". It looked like dog food covered in a cup of grease. I couldn't even get myself to taste it. What an insult to teppanyaki and all Asian food for that matter. The udon broth tastes nothing like udon, it had an overwhelming seaweed taste to it that doesn't belong in udon. The only thing I really found good enough to keep eating was the pre-packaged popsicle in the dessert section. Idk how this place was so busy or how anyone eats here. I wouldn't recommend anyone touch this restaurant with a 20 foot pole and I'm pissed I wasted my hard earned money here. read more

Very disappointed with my experience at Sumo Sushi Tacoma. I waited nearly 50 minutes for my food, which is far longer than expected. There was little communication about the delay, and I felt forgotten as other customers seemed to be served before me. The lack of updates made the experience frustrating. I hope management works on improving service and communication with customers. read more

It takes more than 40 minutes to get your food. People who came way after me still got their food before me. One of the servers said "kitchen is backed, it'll come" another server went to check & said "order is there but hasn't been made." We returned tonight to see how things had changed, and while my husband thinks it deserves 3 stars, I think the 2 stars are fair still. Improvements: less of a wait for seating and food being brought out, less robots beep-boping around, better service (they actually took plates away); the hot bar is now in a different location and has a wider variety of items to choose from. Also, the ramune/free drinks in exchange for a positive review signs are gone. The meh: it took a while for us to get refills and eventually had to ask random waiters for it; sushi is still very much buffet quality and every roll tastes the same after a few bites; the placement for the hot bar is just silly....sure it's less cramped but it's where all the waiters congregate when entering the aisle carrying food. You're literally in their way and in the robot's way; you're still getting small portions for the most part/4 pieces of a roll depicted in the menu photos. I don't know, I still don't understand the hype, however I'm glad they found their groove and they seem much more coordinated. read more

It took me a very long time to make it over here because of the crowds and hype, but I finally was able to experience this location. Located in the shopping plaza where Ross, Honey Baked Ham, and Michael's is located, Sumo is towards the far right. There is plenty of parking as it's a huge lot. You sign in on a tablet once you arrive and put down your name, number, and how many is in your party if there is a wait. They'll send you a text once your table is ready. Once seated, you will scan the bar code and can order from there. It's best to order from one phone. There is a buffet bar with side dishes, salads, rice, and sauces. On the other end is a build your own beverage bar. It contains Thai tea, a tropical tea, and cherry kool aid. There are sinkers such as tapioca pearls, egg pudding, ice, and etc. Anything you order will be made to order by the kitchen. Their friendly robot will deliver your dishes to your table. There are different levels of the robot (top/middle/lower) and it will light up blue to advise which is yours to take. Don't forget to hit the finish button when you're done so it can be on its way. The staff was friendly, and the hostess was very informative on how it all worked. You can ask a server for the check, or if they seem busy, you can use your phone to call them to give you your check. Once available, someone will come straight over. If you're looking for something casual, quick, and not too fancy, this place is suitable for your needs. If you're a sushi snob, it may not be the place for you. My only downside is that most of their rolls have spicy mayo on everything. Although the photo doesn't show it, it says it on the bottom of the photo in small print. There isn't an option for special instructions so we could ask for no spicy mayo as Hubby doesn't do any type of spicy. Otherwise, Sumo is a pretty nice place. read more

They have a mini buffet filled with delicious fried treats The rolls were pretty good but make sure you read the FINE PRINT. You cannot place another order until 15 minutes have gone by!!! Went in on 6/25 around dinner time. It was semi business but not the "normal" busy. We came in at the same time as the table next to us but we had to wait 30+ minutes for our orders. After the first 15-20 we put in the order again and still nothing. I told the manager (the Asian guy in the front) about what was happening and he kept telling me that' it'll come but nothing came. After a while he brought the California roll and said the rest was coming but again nothing. Now at that point we were waiting so long for our orders and the people next to us have already left and new people were reseated and eating that we just wanted to leave. No discount no nothing. Waitress gave us the check and asked if we wanted to to tip when no one literally helped us the whole time we were there. I have been going to sumo since it opened and have had very good experiences every time i've been there. They have now introduced a mandatory service fee. Last night will be the last night that I return to sumo , until they get rid of their service fee. I explained this to the cashier , and she was very understanding. I have tried many Ayce and conveyor belt sushi restaurants. The quality of fish at Sumo's is really good! I suggest getting the dinner menu as that allows you to order the sashimi. If you want a break from fish, there are steak and noodle options. Service is done by an automated robot and the food comes out pretty quick. The dessert bar is the one thing I'm not impressed about, it can be upgraded. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch to celebrate our 6 year anniversary as we both were craving sushi and were very hungry. As we arrived, we were seated after a few minutes as a party of 4 had arrived just before us and they were being seated and told how the ordering works here. Once it was our turn, we told that we can order up to 15 items every 15 minutes and that any leftovers would be charged. Other reviewers mentioned that if you want to order any cooked foods such as hot food items or deep fried rolls that it would take time so to order those ahead of time. I love that they offer a small self-serve all you can eat area that has gyoza, miso soup, salad, desserts and fruits in the corner as well as a fridge that has ice creams of all types like popsicles and ice cream cups. The fried rice and noodles were on the bland side so I highly recommend getting a grilled meat (the grilled shrimp is superb!) to eat alongside it as it will taste much better. The takoyaki was okay but not the best I've ever had. The rolls and sushi was okay too, nothing that wowed me. The seaweed salad was as you guessed it, just meh and again something you can find anywhere else. It just tasted the same as another other sushi joint with similar sauces, ingredients and presentation. The only difference that this establishment has is the presentation of the Sweet Heart roll but it only comes in two pieces so if you like then you got to wait another 15 minutes to get it again if you didn't order multiple. It would also be nice if employees came by more often to check on you as they only really come if you finish your plates. But they don't notice empty glasses of water (which I'm glad I didn't order a drink cause it would have been waste) or to just check in on you. I do love that the robots deliver your foods though. The space was clean for the most part and I love bright the space is so I could take decent pictures. However, this visit was just another average sushi spot with the only real bonus of it being all you can eat but even then you have a limit of 15 items per 15 minutes so if you bring multiple people then it can get tricky on how you wanna order. I think this visit will be our last as we rather spend the same price elsewhere for spectacular tasting and looking sushi with better ambiance and service. read more

After seeing Sumo AYCE all over social media for what has probably been months, I FINALLY got the chance to come in! We were in search of a dinner spot before the nearby Rainiers game, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Sumo was only an 8 minute drive away. Parking lot is very spacious as this is in a strip mall type of place. The vibe when you walk in is fun, servers were super nice and got us seated quickly for it being a Saturday early evening. I wasn't quite sure how it all was going to work even after reading reviews, but it ended up being super easy and our server explained the whole process. You order from your phone with a QR code and you're allowed to order 15 items every 15 minutes. Since it was just the two of us, that was a lot. While you're waiting for your order, you're able to go to the buffet bar which was awesome! When your orders are ready, they're delivered by robots which I've never experienced so that was so fun! I should've taken note of everything tried, but I was a ROOKIE and didn't, so I know a few things are missing from memory. Our trip to the buffet bar was great. So many appetizers and bites to start with! I tried the lumpia, gyoza, seaweed salad, wontons, and the miso soup. My only complaint is that I wish the wonton were crab wontons and not just cream cheese, but they were still tasty. We didn't indulge, but they also have milk teas that are available to grab at no extra cost at the buffet bar. We tried an assortment of sushi rolls, most that had spicy crab, spicy tuna, etc. All of the rolls that we had were really good and the quality was adequate for an all-you-can-eat sushi situation. Is it the BEST sushi I've ever tried? No. But in no sense of the word was it bad, and it hit the spot to satisfy a craving! I also tried the spicy ramen which again, wasn't the best I've had (a little on the watery side for my liking) and the spice was DEFINITELY there... The pork belly in it was delicious though! I also tried the tuna hand roll which tasted fresh and I definitely could've gotten more than 1. We ended strong with a bowl of the chicken katsu curry - the chicken katsu was cooked beautifully and the crunch was perfect. The curry was a little on the sweet side for what we typically like, but again, wasn't bad. At $32 per person for an all-you-can-eat dinner with SO many options, Sumo is definitely worth it. We'll definitely be back in the future when we're in the mood to eat way too much! read more

Our new favorite sushi restaurant! The offerings are excellent and the fish is fresh and delicious! We usually primarily eat Sashimi. However other offerings are wonderful. They have a menu online and you can order 15 items at a time but you need to wait 15 minutes between orders. The food is served by robots. They also have a buffet in the front of the restaurant. Sometimes the tempura sits a little the too long so it is often greasy. I think it would be better on the menu rather than on the buffet. We have been to other Sumo Sushi's in the area but none compare to the service and friendly staff at the Tacoma location! Chef .. PLEASE add Inari Age to the menu! read more

Honestly, this place is definitely worth the visit. I will absolutely go back again if it's just for their hot pots. Although the only have two options and they really are for one person, however 2 to 3 people can share them, but you'll miss out on some goodies in your hot pot. The sushi itself and the sashimi is actually pretty dang good. I went about 1:30 PM in the afternoon on a Saturday and the quality of food was quite well. There is a salad bar with a variety of different foods in it the sesame balls as always were pretty good. There's an assortment of salad stuff but as well as some chicken skewers and shrimp and some other stuff as well as me so which was really good. I was happy with it. Most of the staff are pretty friendly. There's a few that I felt could do with a lesson in manners and table side etiquette. But for the most part, most of the staff is really pretty friendly. You're ordering off of a QR code on your phone that sends back to the kitchen and then your order comes out on this cute little robot. If you want to order drinks, you have to wave down a staff member. there is an assortment of sake and they have other drinks as well. There are some items missing off the menu, which I feel is just kind of standard as sushi house. And none of your order comes with any wasabi or ginger. You have to ask for that separately. Which is really odd because that's what sushi comes with. On Saturday and Sunday you're paying $30 per person for dinner all day and Monday through Friday you're paying about $22 per person for lunch and again $30 per person for dinner. For what it is, I will definitely go back, but it's not the best and it's not the worst. It's worth a visit. read more

First time visiting sumo sushi. Went here with my boss for a candidate interview at our company! When I immediately walked in, I stopped, and my eyes turned into the size of golf balls. This cute little robot was talking at a table, and I just stopped and looked at it and was amazed. I've never been to a restaurant where a little robot brings you your food. What was more awesome if she was so polite. I immediately just cracked up at this cute little machine that delivered the food. we were seated at a great table and we started looking at the menu. All the price you can't beat. $22 for all you can eat sushi not to mention a cold bar with fruit and eggrolls and Gyoza! We ordered a plethora of goodies, teriyaki beef, chicken, salmon, noodles, coconut prawns... The works. Everything was absolutely wonderful, and the service was absolutely incredible. Today was my first visit and everything went beyond my expectations! David, the owner, went out of his way to walk me through their way of ordering and constantly checked in on me throughout my visit. The place was spotless and I loved the decor. And the food was incredible!! The sushi is high quality I've only ever eaten in Japan!
