THE place to go in the Peninsula should you ever have a craving for egg tarts. I love the Portuguese-style ones and will call ahead to order. Sometimes they sell out, so I recommend calling a day in advance so they can set some aside for you. I haven't had the breads or cakes in a while, but from what I remember, they were always satisfactory. I like how the cakes were never too sweet, and the sponges were soft and fluffy!

    Portuguese egg tart

Popular Chinese bakery with a variety of Hong Kong pastries. The store itself is small and offers no seating so it's a grab and go store. They ask that for $15 or less that you pay in cash. Not sure if this is a hard requirement or just that they will charge you an additional fee. We tried their most popular product which is the Portuguese egg tart. The egg custard was sweeter than your typical egg tarts and the shell was a little thicker and less flaky than the typical. Give it a try if you're not an egg tart connoisseur.

What's left of most of their buns by the end of the lunch hour...

Despite the fact that I'm only writing this now, there was actually a time when I used to come to Suzanne's somewhat regularly (regularly irregular?). When I worked on the peninsula, I'd often get lunch in downtown Millbrae, so it was super convenient to stop in since I'd already be nearby. That being said, I have to admit the convenience was also the only reason why I came here. Surprisingly, even though there are tons of Asian eateries and restaurants around here, this has long been one of the only Asian bakeries in this part of the Bay Area! Every time I do happen to drop into Suzanne's, I'm always reminded of just how much this place has to offer. In a way, it feels like a cross between the sort of neighborhood bakery you'll find in SF and a chain, especially with how they individually package everything. Regardless, the range of goodies you'll find available is impressive. Along with their assortment of cakes in their display case (fruit, chocolate, sponge, tiramisu, etc.), their shelves are also stocked with different types of breads (whole loaves and sliced), buns, cookies, muffins, and several types of mooncakes, especially ahead of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival). Plus, on their counter, they also have a display of egg tarts, as well as some Chinese steamed buns. In short, lots to choose from! -- PINEAPPLE BUN Maybe it's just bad luck, but this always feels sold out. Either way, this is just okay. The crust on top is sweet, but I wish it was thicker and had more of that "cookie" texture to it. Still, the bigger issue I've had is that on several occasions, the bun has felt a bit dried out. -- COCKTAIL BUN While it's far better than the Pineapple Bun, this is kind of basic. I like that it's not very bready on the ends and there there's usually a good amount of filling in this. However, I wish the filling was actually a little less sweet and a bit more buttery. -- CUSTARD BUN I don't often get this one (my relatives like it), but the times I've had this, it's been pretty standard. As with the Cocktail Bun, the filling is sweeter than I prefer, but I like how the dough with this one is really soft. -- PORTUGESE EGG TART Not the best I've had, but far better than the ones my family used to occasionally get from Sheng Kee. The tops are lightly scorched to give the custard that slightly caramelized element to it and the crust is decently flakey, though I wish it was browned a bit more. -- ALMOND COOKIES I haven't seen these the last few times I've been here and that sucks because these are so much more unique than most out there. The cookies are almost like a brittle with a really nice crunch and a strong taste of almond to them. If it wasn't already apparent, I clearly haven't tried the vast majority of Suzanne's offerings. However, one thing I would still like to try are their cakes that seem to be so popular. Over the years, several friends have mentioned this is their respective family's go-to spot for special occasions and it's easy to see why. Between how good they look in the display case and in the photos on Yelp, I can't help but want to try one for myself! When the need should arise again for me to pick up a cake, I'll try to make a point of coming out here to get one instead of heading to my own go-to spot. However, until that time comes, based purely on the bakery goodies I've tried, Suzanne's will always stand out to me more for their convenience than for anything amazing.

I've had this place bookmarked for a while since I'm always on the hunt for good egg tarts. When it comes to Portuguese egg tarts, Lord Stow's Bakery in Macau still holds the crown for me. Sadly nothing has come close. So when I saw the giant banner (in Chinese) boldly claiming to be the "King of Egg Tarts," I had to give it a try. I picked up 4 Portuguese egg tarts and a few assorted pastries. Unfortunately, everything was pretty mediocre. The pastries were overly airy which reminded me of those mass-produced ones from Chinese bakery chains. The egg tart crust was too oily and lacked that crisp, flaky texture I was hoping for. The custard itself was okay. It's not overly sweet, which I appreciated but not enough to make up for the crust. Glad I gave it a shot, but I won't be returning. If you're looking for better pastries in the area, Simply Cake in San Mateo is miles ahead of this.

They don't want your filthy money! The banner outside shows the name of this place translates to "King of Portuguese Tarts". It means they specialize in these type of tarts I have been at thisplace twice already and every time, they say they are sold out of Portuguese Tarts, please buy something else. The 2nd time they even had a tray of Portuguese Tarts right in the selling area, with an ironic sign that says "sold out". They said those are reserved. Well then (1) you aren't sold out (2) don't put them out on display then. Why do you call yourself King of Portuguese Tarts if you never have any available? If you can't prepare for enough, then you are just a amateur hobbyist, not really a king. I don't see any lines waiting outside, so it's not that hard to estimate demand. If I go to McDonald's will they tell me they ran out of fries? If I go to the noodle shop next door will they take me every time I go that they are out of noodles? If I go to Chinese restaurant will they tell me they run out of rice, every time I go? This is ridiculous If you don't want sell Portuguese Tarts don't do call yourself King

The best Portuguese egg tarts in the Bay Area! Better than Mr Bread, Golden Gate Bakery, and all of the other notable spots! I bought some for my parents to try and they agree too. The filling tastes natural, no artificial flavor and it's the perfect consistency. It's slightly runny but holds its shape. The custard is also extremely smooth! The crust is our favorite part though. It's buttery and flakey and has a great crunch to it. I've purchased their breads here but what really makes them stand apart is their egg tarts. Highly recommend trying them!

Life is happiest with these almond cookies at Suzanne's bakery! I wish I could eat as many as I want but my doctor won't be happy with my high blood sugar! The service is awesome. This place is the best bakery in town. The vibe is cool and happy! Happy sweets!

    Inside the chestnut cake

I ordered a cake here this week. Ordering the cake was so easy. I ordered the small chestnut cake. I like how they have small cakes here for small parties. They said the cake is good for 3 to 4 people but honestly it is actually good for six people. I came to pick it up that the time I requested and it was ready for me. The cake was perfect in size! They have me a really big box for the cake, which I wish was smaller. The cake itself was good and had pieces of chestnut in it. I wish it had more chestnuts but overall it was pleasant.

Bakery was open on Christmas Day and not many shops were open. I dropped in to pick up a chocolate cake roll. For a $15 dollar cake roll from an Asian bakery, I expect it to be half decent. The counter person said it keeps a few days in the fridge but it was super dry and almost inedible. On a previous occasion, the same person said the cake was made fresh that day but the cake roll was frozen. She may be the owner. IMO she is unprofessional and will say anything to peddle the baked goods. I normally go to Sheng Kee bakery where pastries are always consistently fresh and prices are more reasonable.

Their menu has a ton of options, although there aren't many pictures, so it took us a minute to decide. Thankfully the staff were super friendly and patient. It was my first time trying Binka Bites and I really enjoyed them. The texture reminds me of a hybrid between mochi and sponge cake, soft, chewy, and not overly sweet. My favorite flavor out of the box was definitely the Nutella. For leftover, I would recommend to microwave them for a 5-8 seconds before eating so it will be soft and warm. The Spam Musubi had a great spam-to-rice ratio imo (very important lol) with decent amount of sauce. Meanwhile, the Chicken Empanada was fresh, hot, and packed with flavorful shredded chicken. Overall, it was a really great first visit. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying their Mini Adobo Rice with Scrambled Egg next time.
