They are a dated HK style bakery but I wanted to highlight what our faves are: - egg custard tarts are so good and you can tell they make their crusts by hand, some places use premade crusts - milk tea - they make it old school style and it's very satisfying especially the cold foggy summer months - pineapple buns with custard - flaky, the custard is not too sweet and it's light and airy - MOCHI: don't sleep on it!!! Best mochi on there area, so amazingly light, chewy and the fillings are so good. Also pay cash if you can but they also take credit cards for purchases greater than $5 read more

Need to update my review to 5 stars. Despite this location not being a huge bakery and not having as many choices as some other places, I think the quality of the food here really stands out. I came here the other day and got some bbq pork buns, pigs in a blanket, butter croissants, chocolate croissant, and a cocktail bun, and you could tell that everything was made fresh that day. The food is delicious and everyone in the family is able to find something that they enjoy. Definitely support this local bakery! read more

My bf came over with these goodies. I warmed them up in the air fryer and after eating, wished I had more. The hot dog was good and the bread was buttery. Perfect for midday snack. Decent selection here at this Hong Kong bakery they have things ranging from egg tarts to paper wrapped sponge cakes to Hong Kong style pineapple buns. It's really one of the only Chinese style bakeries around the area so this is the one I typically would go to. The baked goods are decent. It's not any of the best I've ever had but it does satisfy the cravings. They also serve milk tea there or you can also ask for Yin Yang, which is 50% coffee and 50% milk tea. The service is OK the staff there collect your money and get you on your way so really nothing to complain about there. The bake shop and ambience is that of a typical Chinese style bakery you walk in and you grab your tray along with the tongs and you pick out the specific pastries that you want, and you put it on the plate and give it to the staff person at the front near the counter. That's also where you can get your egg tarts and other type of goods such as the more fresh pastries with meat in inside like a cha siew bao. If you pay with cash is cheaper as I believe they charge a surcharge when you pay with credit card. Parking is easy because it is just part of the big plaza area with plenty of parking. read more

New Horizons Bakery is a pretty standard, no-frills Asian bakery. Nothing here is going to blow you away, but it does the job well, especially if you're looking for something quick and affordable. I picked up the hot dog buns, which come in boxes of 8 and are really inexpensive, solid value for what you get. The inside looks a bit worn down and could use some updating, but that didn't really matter to me. The service was quick and straightforward, and the owner was efficient and polite, which is honestly all you need for a bakery like this. Overall, the food is solid, just not something I'd go out of my way for. New Horizons Bakery is a very good cantonese style bakery. For some reason its really hard to find custard pineapple buns here in the bay area (other than the aptly named Pineapple King Bakery). They're pretty solid here, tho as everyone else has mentioned they do run out quickly! The coconut cream bun, fried meat dumpling, fried sesame ball, egg tarts and of course the mini hot dog buns are also usual staples that we get. Yes, I'm not going to apologize for being the guy who makes everyone wait while my order is boxed up. Also - don't sleep on the HK coffee/milk tea! The lady who does all the boxing is always very nice and patient as well, even as she has to ring up like 30 items for me and all the people behind start to get impatient... Lastly - this would be 5 stars if their fried stuff didnt have so much more gluten than filling. They still taste good, but I do end up pulling half the dough out so its a better ratio. Meh Meh Meh Located in a rather downtrodden small shopping center, it's a nondescript Chinese bakery. Mini red bean cakes - flat but w an OK amount of sweet red bean filling. Mini wife cakes - coconut(?) filling. Egg tarts - not bad, not great. BBQ pork bao - man, they need a whole lot more filling. The dough isn't worth eating. 3.25 stars. While walking around King Plaza a few years ago, I stumbled upon and discovered New Horizons Bakery. I was excited to find that they sell Chinese egg tarts and fried sesame balls. Since then, the shoppe has been one of my main neighbourhood spots to go for Asian savoury and sweet baked goods. Venue: 3 stars. Free parking is available in the shopping centre's private lot. Sometimes you can find a spot to park right in front of the store. During weekends, you might need to wait for an available space. Heads-up - the rows of parking spaces on the side facing the Manila Oriental Market (New Horizon's next door neighbour) are tight, so not the easiest for big automobiles to get out of a spot during peak time. Inside, the customer side of New Horizons Bakery is a single room where shopping, placing & picking up orders, and dining all take place. There are two to three tables with chairs for patrons, but no table service. The place is usually kept fairly clean, but I wouldn't call it pristine. Food: 3.25 stars. In addition to hot and cold drinks, there are a myriad of baked goods offered at New Horizons from BBQ Pork Buns to Chinese Donuts to Croissants (Strawberry, Blueberry) to Walnut Cookies to Muffins, the list goes on. Prices are reasonable here. Matcha Red Bean Muchi - OK, not bad. Egg Tart - Good. You can see the layers of pastry dough that make up the crust which can be nice and flaky. I go to New Horizons specifically for their egg tarts. Matcha Egg Tart - I was really excited about these egg tarts, but was disappointed that I didn't taste much of a green tea flavour. I prefer the regular ones over this flavoured version. Sesame Ball - Practically tennis ball size. Mom wasn't very impressed by these big sesame balls because of their thick skin. They are good to eat only when you first buy them, not worth the calories after a day, even if you manage to toast them to revive the crunch. Mini Hotdog Bun - The boys enjoyed these pigs in a blanket. Service: 3 stars. Items tend to run out by end of the day, but you can place orders ahead of time for guaranteed availability for pick-up. At the counter where you pay, they have two signs posted to inform customers of the 3% to 4% credit/debit card fee that New Horizons charges to the customer. Ummm...1. Which is it; 3% or 4%? My family loves going to Manila Oriental. Whenever I don't want to go in with them, I like going in here. The store is clean and always has freshly made pastries and goodies. It has the standard staples like bbq pork buns, egg tarts, and sesame balls, to name a few. I like that it is a no frills bakery and it is reasonably priced. People who work here are nice and tell me about any other fresh seasonal items they have. Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2023 Post Pandemic Chronicles New Horizons Bakery is located in the King Shopping Center in Daly City. It's in the same shopping center as Ling Nam Star Bread Bakery. After spending time in Hong Kong I couldn't get how much more delicious the food (savory and sweet) was there then here in the United States. I remember having the most delicious Dan Tat (custard egg tarts) and Jiandui (deep fried sesame balls with sweet bean filling). Golden Gate Bakery was my go to before I visited HK. Nothing compares to HK. Unfortunately, GGB is rarely open. My cousin Fred told me about New Horizons Bakery- he even brought us fresh Dan Tat and it was amazing. On par with GGB, maybe even better. The customer service is friendly and fast at New Horizons Bakery. Everything is fresh and delicious. I'm no pastry snob or anything, but I really just love this place that's so close by and has a nice selection at really great prices! I've come here during the morning on weekends before the shopping center got really busy, so it was a nice easy in and out. It's a great place to pick up pastries to start a day trip or whatever floats your fancy. I like having a selection of savory pastries to eat for breakfast! Small pork buns are overpriced. The bun is tasty, but unfortunately very little filling.

The Bakery is not the same anymore, the stuffing inside the buns may it be savory or sweets are like very very very tiny pieces of meat or bean paste. All buns and dough not much filling, I'm talking about even crumbs is bigger than the fillings. Horrible, not like the food 7 years ago. Even the egg custard is bland and watered down. No taste, no creaminess, can't taste egg or richness. It's very bland and seems like it's all yellow food coloring, sugar and water. read more

Not sure what happened bc my hubby previously liked them, but this time when we bought bbq pork buns (which were NOT cheap), there was barely any meat in them! $1.30 for tiny pork buns with about 2 marbles worth of meat total is a total rip off. I can get normal sized pork buns at a Sac bakery for $1.50 which has a decent amt of meat. The larger buns are $2.10 I think and similarly lacking meat... for a large bun, there was maybe 3-4 marbles worth of meat... The baked bread bun was good, but... I'm not paying $1.30 and $2.10 for 80-90% bread... I had to eat about 70% of the bun with BBQ pork that I had bought from a restaurant to be able to finish it. Will not be returning (at least not for BBQ buns), super disappointed. Hopefully this was a fluke, but I'm not taking any chances. read more

I love pork bbq buns but they're sure hard to find on my side of town. I was in the Daly City area the other week and saw New Horizons Bakery on Yelp. I was thinking I had to trek all the way to Chinatown to get my fix, but luckily New Horizons sells pork buns. The buns were nice and warm, and they hit the spot. Came on a Sunday afternoon. I was the only one in the bakery. I got some sesame balls and pork buns. They were around $2-3 each. The worker was friendly and helped me find what I needed and didn't make me feel rushed as it was my first time here. She packed everything up quickly and neat. Family really enjoyed them pork buns as they were still warm. Sesame balls were a lot bigger than I expected but that's a good thing. I love Chinese buns & was so happy to find a place that sells them in the peninsula. We don't live in the area anymore but whenever we are around, we always make sure to stop by & grab a box (or a few) to bring home with us. My favorites are the pineapple bun with custard, green onion bun, mini hot dog bun & cocktail bun. There's usually 1-2 people inside whenever I go there. There isn't anywhere to sit inside, it's more of a grab & go place. You take a tray & use tongs to grab the buns (which are individually wrapped in saran wrap) & bring it to the register once you're done. There are also buns & egg tarts in a case next to the register too which you'd have to tell the cashier what you want from there so they can box up. The wrapping of each bakery item in plastic wrap imparts a synthetic flavor, which is noticeable in the aroma of the bread. The bread does not appear fresh, lacks the quality of being baked daily, and is not soft. This place is overpriced for the overall quality and even the size you get. I got 4 items total: 1) 2 sesame seed balls (pictured) 2) Ham & cheese sandwich 3) Bbq pork pastry. Didn't get a pic of #2 & 3 because I ate them on my way to work this morning. 1) Let me start with the sesame seed balls: ($1.30 each. Should go back to $1) The entire texture of the sesame ball and flavor of the paste is my favorite. However, the whole ball is almost tennis-ball size, BUT the paste inside is VERY miniscule and not even centered! (See picture). 2) Ham & Cheese SW ($2.15): About 4" long. Loved the softness of the bread. The slice of ham is very thin, and the egg is fluffy, but overall, the flavor is VERY bland. 3) Bbq Pork Pastry($2.15) The best one out of the 3. The flavor of the bbq pork was delicious. The bread is crispy too. However, only 2" long and the same price as the bland ham & cheese?? What a joke. Tbh, these are the next best eggs tarts you can get if you can't get your hands on Golden Gate Bakery ones. The egg tarts are so fresh - the egg part is so creamy & soft and the crust is almost the perfect flakiness. These are a big hit - even my grandma and aunt approves! I love that it tastes just as good a day or 2 later - just pop it into a toaster oven to get it slightly toasted and warm. Yay! Finally made it to this place. Truthfully, I thought this place was in a different plaza, but this plaza is far less crowded. Yay for ample parking! Daan Tat ($1.80) -- flaky crust, custard/egg filling is slightly sweeter than normal Daan tats. The crust is pretty great though! Pineapple bun with custard inside was pretty tasty. I'd get this one again. Char siu bao ($2.15) is a little expensive and bready imo. The bun with custard on top and nothing inside is skipable. Solid spot for buns overall. I bought six (6) pieces of their baked bbq pork bun here 3 weeks ago and four (4) pieces of their wife cakes that has winter melon some coconut. The baked bun was soft chewy and tasty. Too much baking powder I think since it has more air than dough, but it was okay in taste. Egg Custard Tarts (Dan Tat) are really good. The crust is flakey and the custard is smooth and has structure. Not too sweet is the best compliment! You can eat 100 of these and not get tired of them. They have a matcha variation that is very impressive. There are floral notes of the tea and it's a bit sweeter for the sweet tooth's out there. The prices are a bit higher, but I would say it's justified with the quality of a a family owned business that doesn't get much foot traffic from the masses. What a hidden gem. P.S. bring cash! $9.90 for a box of 9 egg tarts? Sold. You can buy individual ones for $1.30. Sure.. one is really enough... They're the flaky crust ones, not my favorite, but it'll do. And the fact that I don't have to stalk Is Golden Gate Bakery Open Today? for egg tarts, and the fact that I don't need to make a trip out to Yummy Bakery in Chinatown, it's a decent substitute. Not the greatest over all, but enough for me to come back. The crust could be a bit more flaky, or could just ditch all the flakes and go for cookie crust, I'm okay with that too. The custard has more of a restaurant egg tart taste than a bakery taste. Not an issue for me, but could be an issue for some. I've been to this bakery many times, typically after having lunch in the plaza and/or going to the supermarket there. I've been here several times in the early morning as well to pick up some freshly baked goodness for a nice and light breakfast. You really can't go wrong with anything here. The egg tarts, BBQ pork bun, pineapple bun, and more are all very good. Most everything here is made in a simple and traditional fashion so it's perfect for those who are looking for such a bakery. What's also super nice is that they have a very large variety of buns and goodies so there's bound to be something for everyone. One last note I'll make is that their hot HK style milk tea is no slouch either. Nearly every time I'm here, I make sure to grab myself a cup whenever they still have it available. This was a convenient little bakery since it is in the mall area next to other stores. This place is also very COVID-19 friendly since they keep the clean having all of the pastries individually wrapped and having customers use a tray and tongs to grab the food. Sadly, we weren't able to get the Egg Tarts that everyone says are good since they ran out, so we got the Mango Mochi, Taro Cream Pastry, Red Bean Wife Cake, and Taro Pastry. The Mango Mochi was the best thing that we tried since it had such a good and sweet Mango taste. Also, it wasn't like your artificial kind of tasting Mango that you get in candy, it was like they pureed one of those sweet yellow Manila Mangoes to make this delicious Mochi. As for the Pastries we got, I have had better. The Taro Cream Pastry was soft and went well with the Cream filling. Although, I have tasted better at other places. The Red Bean Wife Cake was like a flat version of a Filipino Red Bean Hopia with more filling than Pastry, but have definitely tasted better. The Taro Pastry was left to be desired because the outside was too dense for the light Taro puree filling. Overall, definitely will get the Mango Mochi again and don't mind coming back to try the Egg Tarts, but the other Pasties were left to be desired. read more
