Buttermilk pancakes with eggs and sausage
    Carrie M.

This is an old-timey diner with classic American breakfast, sandwiches, and burgers. I appreciate how they were very upfront with the 50 cent per egg surcharge. I had the buttermilk pancakes with two eggs and sausage, while my friends got various sandwiches. My meal was $14.61 plus tip. The pancakes were thick and fluffy, while the eggs and sausage were pretty standard. I will say that I was bothered to see the little plastic butter packets on top of and touching the pancakes as it does not seem hygienic. The service was friendly, although my friends were getting hangry as we waited 45+ minutes for our food.

These ladies run an awesome diner! Had lunch here for the first time today and both ladies were friendly, patient, attentive and kind. The food was so good, especially the dreamcicle! We live an hour away and was just in town to see a specialist but we will be coming back, definitely worth the drive.

Thought we'd try something new and, instead of going to Megg's, we thought we'd give Suzy Q's a try. So glad we did. We kicked off our meal with coffee. I got a Brevee Latte that was delicious. Perfect, creamy foam on top of milky, smooth espresso. My husband got a black coffee that he said was a little weak. Next time, he'll order an Americano. We ordered the cinnamon roll as an appetizer. It was ooey gooey, just like we like it and the cream cheese drizzle on top was . For entrees, my husband ordered the French Toast plate. He said his eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly. I tried his French Toast, and we both agreed it was a good, classic French Toast-- the outside had a nice crispy texture but the inside was fluffy and custard-ey. I ordered the Monte Cristo with fries. I hadn't had a Monte Cristo in ages and this one did not disappoint. Creamy, salty, cheesy goodness on the inside, perfectly deep fried on the outside with homemade raspberry jam on the side. French fries were perfectly done. This place has taste and texture down-- crisp but not too crunchy, soft, fluffy potato on the inside. Got ranch to dip first, of course and they got the good ranch. We were so stuffed we didn't order dessert, but it looks like they have some yummy options that we'll have to try next time. Service was friendly and attentive. Pretty sure the owner checked in and got us a refill a couple times; it's always nice to see the owner out and about serving and greeting customers. So glad we made the decision to skip Megg's this go and try something new. Did not disappoint and we will definitely be returning when we pass through Temple.

    Bagels and lox

This diner has always been one of my favorites. It's definitely one of the best diners in Central Texas! Let's start with the customer service, which is top-notch on many days. You may even find the owner "Elaine" there to greet you. In her absence, you will be greeted by one of her very competent and friendly staff. As Elaine puts it they're like family and believe me they treat you like family. You'll be quickly seated in a cozy dining area, large enough for groups, but quiet enough to hear yourself think. There are many options to choose from for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. I have it had an item from the menu that I didn't thoroughly enjoy... believe me I'm working my way through the menu as quickly as possible! This morning I opted for a café au lait (remember those) and bagels and lox. I had my locks and cream cheese on and everything bagel... and yes, it was everything! The richness of the cream cheese complemented the saltines of the salmon and the tank of the capers perfectly. If you're ever in Central Texas, be sure to stop by this quaint little diner for a taste of home with a flare.

Customer service: 5 stars, there was only 1 other party at the time but my mom frequents this restaurant and has had great service every time. French toast: 0 stars. This had a very weird flavor yesterday. The crust was the only edible part. I only ate a 1/4. I was a bit disappointed since my mom likes this restaurant. Beignets: 4 stars. I took them home to Austin to enjoy with some Cafe Du Monde coffee. Great combination! Reminded us of our trip to New Orleans. Breakfast sandwich: 5 star review from my mom. This is her regular when she comes here. I would love to try the restaurant again next time I'm in town and try different items. I will update my review on my next visit.

Well first, the place is inviting for people of a certain age as well as for young people with many decorations evocative of the hippie era. It's clean and very pleasant. The menu is ambitious, I think they try too hard to be cute. And though the service was excellent, it all came down to the food for me. I ordered the Birdie Trio. It sounded interesting. But too many of these restaurants trying to do chicken and waffles take the shortcut and use processed boneless chicken parts reformed to look like an actual natural piece. I was supposed to get a thigh on each waffle. The chicken vaguely resembled thighs. But the meat was white and very salty. Not good. Should I ever drop in again, I'll stick with a more traditional combination and maybe my extra will be better. And oh, that credit card machine is set at a default of about 22% tip and that's on top of tax. Watch out!

The evening started with a game of Restaurant Hide and Seek. After being seated, we sat for quite a while wondering if we were part of a social experiment--no water, no menus, no acknowledgment. Eventually a waiter arrived and, very honestly, said he was there to take our order because we'd been "ignored." Accurate assessment. We placed our order, and later a woman who appeared to be a manager brought out our appetizer, apologized for no one taking care of us, and said the appetizer would be comped. A very nice gesture--unfortunately one that didn't make it to the bill, where the appetizer showed up like it never heard that conversation. The food itself? Genuinely good. No complaints there. However, my wife's Caesar salad never arrived. She didn't bring it up because, frankly, after the earlier disappearing-staff act, it felt like tempting fate. We paid the bill (about $100), including a surprise 3% credit card fee we didn't see posted anywhere. We opted to take dessert home, mostly because the night already felt complete... enough. Bottom line: the food has real potential, but the service needs leadership, consistency, and maybe a map. It's hard to justify coming back in the future when you factor in parking fees, credit card fees, and the possibility of being politely ignored on a special occasion. It's a shame--good food deserves better service.
