I visited this quaint little bakeshop this morning. I wanted to see what all the rage was about. I hear nothing but good things about this bakery. Not just from Yelper's but from people on the streets. My mission for today was taste their cookies. I LOVE COOKIES! I've had people tell me that I could be related to the Cookie Monster. I ordered a Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookie and a Peanut Butter cookie. (FYI.. I eat anything peanut butter.) As I sat outside enjoying the morning breeze, I devoured that cookie like a fat kid loves cake (as 50 would say). A customer sitting near me noticed that I was inhaling the cookies. She said "Good Lord! Slow down,girl. I don't have a cell phone to be callin' 911 if you bout to choke on that cookie". How embarrassing. I think there is probably very little I could actually eat at Sweet Adeline's because it is a bakeshop and they use gluten-full flour. But, I know the treats are fabulous because they provided food and drinks for an event my employer was hosting. A good number of the evaluations of the event noted how good the baked goods were. They are sort of a corner mom and pop shop. Working with them to coordinate this event for my work was a pleasure. The cafe has something of a patisserie feel to it. The Sweet A is like a really chill version on Tartine, without the frenzy, long lines or surly staffers. No one snarls here. Butter is used a tad bit more judiciously. The sun is always shining. A whole fruit tart to go with only set you back $20 some bucks, so you can pick up an amazing $15 bottle of prosecco at the Bowl, and head on over to the party in major style, with some cash to spare for the MCD's. The galetes are unbeatable. The staff keep the line moving, yet remember your name. This place warms my heart. I used to stop by every day before work, knowing I would get through the line in 5-10 minutes, chai latte prep and apple turnover heating time included. Now I come by to study. It's a little noisy, and few seats shield you from the cool air of the frequently opening front door. It's a cute spot with a nice variety of baked goods, but not the best and certainly not one with great customer service. Most everyone else has complimented this bakery for all the right reasons -- great prices, very friendly staff, and some of the most delicious variety of pastries in the East Bay. I just want to add my experiences of the last few years. I've watched how this humble little bakery has changed what used to be a neighborhood I wouldn't walk through, into a community "must be seen there" place. Absolutely every type of person -- and dog (there is a water bowl outside, and home made dog biscuits available inside) -- you could imagine is served quickly and politely. On any given Saturday morning, people are lingering over coffee or tea and a scone, or some other delectable, or sitting at tables or benches outside and reading the paper, knitting, or playing music, while the lines move quickly from one end of the counter to the register. And there is plenty of parking, 7 days a week. I was there recently in the middle of a work day afternoon, and the place was packed! I've had pastries the world over, and can honestly say that the owner's Parisian training is evident in the quality and seasonal variety of goods prepared. The Almond Tea Cakes are worth a special note -- they are moist, nutty, and the perfect size (and price, at $0.75 each!) to bring to a pot luck or have on hand when you have people over for tea or brunch. I've taken them warm from the oven into the office, and they get devoured immediately. A special note -- the Mochas and Hot Chocolates are very well prepared -- thick and chocolatey, and if it's your Birthday, the staff will actually write "Happy Birthday" on the top -- now THAT'S customer-oriented service! read more

Yes, in the span of one short week, my friend and I devoured items from three bakeries in the east bay. While I was working, my friend was stealthily mapping out bakery locations as she dropped off materials for her work. This was stop #3, first two being Bakesale Betty's and Love at First Bite. #3 was quite good and worth additional tries. My friend, Jen, brought over a piece of flourless chocolate cake, chocolate cupcake, and a meringue cookie filled with raspberry (not sure) creme filling. My favorite was the meringue. This was a step above the ones from Sugar, Butter, Flour in Sunnyvale, because it was bigger and had that creme filling! Cupcake, was good, but average in flavor and consistency. Flourless chocolate cake was good, rich without being too sweet. I am glad that my bf loves me for who I am, because I wouldn't know how to explain all the chocolate and sweet traces around the sides of lips otherwise. I called in an order for a Red Velvet cake Monday late morning/early afternoon to be picked up at 10am this morning (Wednesday). The woman on the phone was very helpful, as I didn't know that there would be so many different options to choose from. Our meeting would consist of 12 members and she recommended a 9" cake which would feed 12-16 people. Upon getting off the phone with her, my Director decided maybe we should get a 12" cake because we didn't know if the 9" would be big enough. I called Sweet Adeline back and unfortunately, anything larger than 9" is considered a special order and would take at least 48 hours (mental note!). However, in the end, there was more than enough cake to accommodate us. *RED VELVET CAKE I loved it and it turned out great! The cake was moist and not too heavy. There were three layers of red velvet cake with cream cheese and chocolate ganosh (I think) between each layer. The cake had a cream cheese outer later and was sprinkled with red velvet cake crumbs and decorated with raspberries. PRICING: Our 9" cake was $35. Oh no! I forgot to write a review about Sweet Adeline who made our wedding cake and all the dessert pies in July 2013 - but they deserve an excellent 5 star review, so better late than never? From the very beginning, they were great to work with. We had a tasting, looked at pictures of the kind of cake we wanted, and walked out super excited about the experience. I dropped off flowers for the cake on the day before the wedding that were incorporated into the cake. People went wild for the lemon meringue pie! I think some of my San Francisco friends even considered crossing the bridge to get more. The actual wedding cake (a smaller cake) was ridiculously good - lemon & strawberry. I have to admit, I only went here yesterday because Crixa Cakes was closed on a Sunday. Sweet Adeline Bakeshop definitely deserves some recognition for being open on a Sunday.. until 5PM! The two times I've tried their pastries were good experiences. The first time was at work. We had an office birthday and ordered a delicious Sweet Adeline fruit tart. It had a golden crumbly crust (probably came from some place like... HEAVEN, I'm sure), toasted almonds, and an array of caramelized fruit. Needless to say, we all scarfed it down pretty quickly and you were pretty damn lucky to even get a second helping of it. It was gone with a blink of an eye. The second time I went, I just happened to be in the mood for a downright dessertfest. Being the natural born eater I am, I drove down to Crixa's with the boyfriend in search of pastries (for dinner, how sick are we?). Crixa's was closed (sucks for you!) so we decided to drive down to Sweet Adeline. If my wallet wasn't so limiting, I would have gotten everything in the bakery. Unfortunately I could only help myself to a slice of chocolate pie, a slice of cheesecake, and a red velvet cupcake. Everything was pretty good. The cheesecake wasn't the BEST cheesecake I've ever had, but still, good enough for me to go "mmmm" and "ohhhh" and "mmmm" some more. The cupcake was just ok. It was a little dry, and I could tell in the display case. But we ordered one anyway because the cream cheese frosting on top was just too good to pass up. The pie especially, was light as air. The globs of fresh whipped cream and silky chocolate filling were just too much for me to handle. I felt like Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the scene where he bends down by the chocolate river and puts heaping handfuls of chocolate in his mouth... And the boyfriend (taking on the role of the mother) is all like, "SLOW DOWN AUGUSTUS! Save some room for later!!!" I think that just about says it all. read more

One of the great things about my commute to work includes the option to stray from my path and swerve over to Sweet Adeline's for a cuppa and a pastry. Every time I've popped in they have had a great selection of baked goods to choose from. Always read all the great reviews so I had to try it. Currently planning our wedding so we're on a hunt for a good baker. A few of my friends have actually used this establishment for their weddings so I was very excited about our cake tasting appointment. I booked my appointment with Jen, who is such a sweetheart. She actually waived the fee due to a schedule mix up which was very nice of her. When we arrived for our appointment, we were greeted by one of their friendly staff and asked us if we would like coffee or tea for our tasting. She then escorted us to our reserved table while she brought over our teas (nice touch). Jen came over with the samples and let me tell you that she's very generous with the slices. She described each flavors and left us alone to our tasting so that we can discuss our thoughts privately (another nice gesture). She had such a wonderful portfolio full of beautiful cakes she's made. Every single flavor we tasted were just so good in their own way and they were just the perfect amount of sweetness but we were particularly blown away by the Carrot Cake. I learned that day that my husband to be is not really a fan of carrot cakes until that moment when I saw his facial expression and said, "Wow, that's pretty good!" I really like that she's straight forward when it was time to discuss pricing, which I think is very affordable. We really had no idea how we wanted our cake to look like but I definitely wanted to incorporate the design that I have on my wedding dress on the cake so she said it wouldn't be a problem and she thought the design was beautiful. We will certainly come back to try their other goodies and did I mention that I just looovvve the smell as soon as you walk in?! It is such a cute bakery and it is a great location with plenty of parking. Their teas were really good so when I come back, I'd have to try their coffees. Just love this place! read more

I can't say enough about this place. Blueberry buckle outside of New England! The scones rock, their lemon cookies are the best I've had (crisp with a puckery lemon flavor), and the praline cookies are decadent. I've ordered cakes for work functions (the summer cake and the chocolate pave) and people have raved. But the best? Jennifer made my wedding cake. Almond pound cake with a layer of fig compote, crushed amaretti cookies coffee frosting and the whole thing was wrapped in buttercream. Sweet Adeline is one of the only reasons living in South Berkeley is worthwhile! I LOVE this place. I've been coming for 2 years. The staff is always really friendly. But, even if they weren't, I could not resist coming back for their scrumptuous cookies, cakes, breads and scones! I have a bonafide sweet tooth that has taken me across continents tasting delicious treats. Sweet Adeline gets 4.5 stars because their food is always fresh and it tastes homemade. My favorite is the ginger bread (OMG!). The reason I can't offer 5 stars is because I wish their coffee tasted decent. I'm not a big cup 'o joe fan really so I won't deduct a full star. I do HEART their chai because it's homemade- YUM!! But, I REALLY WISH they would start being a bit more eco conscious! I can't understand why they use paper cups when you order a drink to stay in!! Cute Little Bakery with delicious desserts, and café with friendly staff to help you. This bakery reminds me of a gourmet bakery. Not too many items to select from but, there's enough. Prices were reasonable for quality of food. I stopped in and purchased a whole Salted Caramel Cake with Candied Praline's and some soft chocolate chip cookies to take home for my family, and my family and I loved them. I also hear the chocolate cake is really good too from a friend that referred me here, but I have not tried it yet. That will be my next trip because I will definitely be back to try some more desserts! Located in a very accessible area that has easy street parking. We ordered our wedding cake from Sweet Adeline, and they did a fabulous job (wedding was July 2, 2011). Juli was an absolute pleasure to work with, and the finished product was stunningly beautiful in its simplicity and elegance (three tiers of white circular cake with a fondant border dusted in old gold). Both flavors we chose (the Rigo Jancsi and the Summer Cake) were delicious--can't go wrong with fresh strawberries and fresh raspberries, chocolate ganache, fresh cream, etc. Would absolutely work with them again! Their prices are very reasonable for wedding cakes. The quality and look of the cake was as good or better than any of the more boutique-y cake places we tried in the Berkeley/Oakland area. read more

We just wanted plain sheet cakes and a small round for display. 4 months in advance they were already booked, but were able to accommodate our simple order at a very reasonable price. We came in for a tasting (because that's the most fun part of planning a wedding!) assuming nothing could beat a chocolate cake. yum they have fabulous savory scones. I never liked scones before, but I love their green onion cheese ones. Before I felt scones were either dry nasty things or fancy biscuits -- which they should just call biscuits. These are buttery flaky airy and not in a biscuit way with a texture that I think those dry nasty things were always reaching for but never reached...oh and a little crumbly too. ( I think good biscuits are buttery, flaky and tender w/large layers -- almost puff pastry-ish but not./see lois the pie queen review) I love their cookies, all of the chocolate ones and the ginger snap too, and a fan of the lemon meringue pie -- which is a little toasted on top (like a meringue cookie). yummy. the brownies -- both the triple chocolate and the Blondie-- to die for. The sandwiches are tasty; I think this is mostly because the buttery focaccia they make is so good with sandwiches. I am also a fan of their apricot pie, flakey tasty buttery crust that does not get soggy from the apricot filling. The Galette is ok, not fabulous; but my friends like it. I've never had any other pies, tarts or cakes... yet. Oh and the staff and owner are so nice; the ambiance is great, there is outdoor seating w/ a watering bowl for dogs. Sweet Adeline's is a nice little bakeshop with great pastry options, courteous service, and a nice convenient location at the Oakland/Emeryville/Berkeley border just three blocks from the Ashby BART station. Here's the quick and dirty. The iced chai soy latte is too heavy on the chai and cinnamon. Not very sweet. The pastries are generally solid, but I usually go around 30-15 minutes before closing, so the level of freshness varies. And, when they say they close at 6pm, they mean 5:59:59. And, they will let you know without mincing words that you need to be out by then. Nevertheless, I keep going back. read more
