This place could easily be 5 stars, but they sell themselves short with their food quality inconsistencies. I picked up my order and mango and sticky rice is horrible - again. The rice is not sweet, the mangos are always dry as if they've been sitting out all day. I asked for no raisins. They comply but also remove the red sugar pebbles. Why? The mangos this place uses are really of bad quality. They need to be soaked in water just to be edible. If this was a one time occurrence - I'd let it slide but this time - No. Raise the quality game up on your mango sticky rice dish. Smh. read more

We are regulars of this local Thai restaurant on Franklin. We have been going here for at least 2 years now and always recommend it to our friends or guests staying in the area! The food is wonderful. We always enjoy their crab rangoons and without a doubt, they serve the BEST tom yum soup! My boyfriend gets the tofu/veggie and I the chicken and it never fails to hit the spot in both warm and the current freezing weather! We have never been disappointed in their main dishes either. Pad Thai is classic, their drunken noodles delicious, garlic noodles and pineapple fried rice are always good and their plating is beautiful. Also, their lunch specials are especially budget friendly, but they a quite affordable in general. The only reason they lose a star is that their service is hit and miss. We love this place, but it is true that we have been here when it takes 15 minutes to be approached by a server. It is a small place, not good for large groups, but even with just 3-4 customers in the place, the service can be slow and without a smile... the quality food and menu prices makes up for a less than friendly wait staff. Enjoyed my experience at Sweet Basil! Thought the service was really good - never had an empty water glass and my Pad Thai was super good and a huge portion! It was also just the right amount of spicy! I've passed this place a lot and am glad I finally popped in! They do have a card minimum of $15 - I think my Pad Thai was $9, which is a great deal. My friends had the green curry and the steamed calamari entree; seemed to enjoy both. Will be back! read more

This restaurant was cool. Still not one of my favorite Thai places in NYC, would definitely rather go to SEA but my date took me there. He had their mango chicken and I had mango shrimp. The food was delicious. I wish the peppers were cooked for a bit longer though. Wayyy to crunchy, like they just cut it up and tossed it in the finished dish. I would go there again, just for this. I don't like to hurt anyone's feelings, and it's rare that I am so upset by my food that I STOP EATING IT to write a yelp review, but this is seriously awful. I am going to try to describe what's going on here to the best of my ability: My vegetable tom yum soup is a reasonable facsimile of a few goya boullion cubes simmered with a handful of expired chili pepper and some anemic bell pepper slices. My fried tofu can really, truly only be described as fried air with a tofu batter [there were a bunch of these floating in my tom yum, in place of uncooked tofu]. I am sure that the sticky rice has some identity issues, as it is not quite sure if it is overcooked sushi rice or wallpaper paste. The peanut sauce tastes like sticky tac and aftershave had a love child which was forced to live in the basement, until it escaped and got into a brawl with some rancid cinnamon. HOW CAN YOU FUCK UP PEANUT SAUCE? The lack of good Thai food in Brooklyn is starting to feel like a personal insult. read more

In a moment of weakness, I forgot just how terrible this neighborhood place was and ordered takeout tofu pad thai. It was even worse than I remembered. The green and red peppers and baby corn reminded me of CHINESE takeout. The sauce had none of the sweet-sour flavor of tamarind and was somehow salty and flavorless. About a year ago, I posted this Twitter request to the Gentrification Gods: Please bring a decent Thai spot to the 'hood; our new white neighbors will love it. Ask an ye shall receive. Sweet Basil is a small restaurant on Franklin Avenue's ever evolving restaurant row. I stopped in with a friend this past Saturday because I had a hankering for mint-fried rice that would not be thwarted. We arrived to a small, quiet restaurant, not expecting much (because quite frankly good Thai in Brooklyn is somewhat of an apparition and the Yelp reviews were not very consistent for this place). There were two couples and a swinging single sitting in the dinning room when we arrived. We started by ordering a couple of Thai Iced Teas, which, unfortunately we had to send back because they were not sweet enough. Our waitress seemed content with obliging and returned with a better interpretation the second time around. However, after receiving our drinks, we had to wait about 10 minutes for the waitress to return to take our order, which seemed somewhat absurd given the small scale and relative emptiness of the restaurant. At this point, my expectations for dining pleasure are falling with every passing minute. Then two unexpected things happen. First, the waitress returns with our food, piping hot, in under 10 minutes. Second, the food we ordered - one order of mint fried rice with shrimp and one order of drunken noodles with beef - was unexpectedly tasty. The food was flavored well and had a spicy kick which both me and my BFF really enjoyed. Well done. Total cost of the meal, about $32 including tip. I'll be back, but I'm managing my expectations given how difficult it is to mess up mint fried rice. You know, Sweet Basil really isn't that bad, I don't really understand where all the hate is coming from. Four years ago, you'd be hard pressed to find a decent burger place in Crown Heights. Now you have a Thai restaurant, an Indian restaurant, specialty organic grocers, a couple bars, a major supermarket, authentic mexican food, a gazillion coffee shops, and all sorts of other things popping up everywhere. I am amazed at how fast Franklin Avenue has changed. Sure, Sweet Basil may not be the "best of NYC;" I'm sure you had something amazing in a different neighborhood, we all have. What Sweet Basil offers is a decent restaurant with affordable food that is good to eat. Furthermore, let's compare it to all of the other thai restaurants in Crown Heights... Let me see... Sushi Tatsu's Thai menu? Yeah, okay, I think Sweet Basil has the leg up on Sushi Tatsu. I'd say the food is comparable to Lemongrass in Park Slope (which is now closed). Fairly tame by my own standards, but certainly not bland in any way. I genuinely like it here, and I think it is a great place to eat if you live in this area. I'm usually really critical when it comes to food and my reviews, but you have to look at Sweet Basil for what it is, the best in the neighborhood. read more

This is not Thai food. And trust me, I'm not a picky person. Run-of-the-mill American style Thai is just fine for me. This is Chinese food with Thai names. I got the veggie pad thai, hard to mess up, right? Wrong. It had about half a green pepper, some nasty tofu obviously fried several times, and about three bits of baby corn (in pad thai!?!?). You can get better pad thai at a street fair, after it's been 5 hours in the sun. The sauce was some kind of corn-syrup concoction, super red-brown. The noodles were rubbery and stuck together in clumps. They also didn't bring the salad I was supposed to get with the lunch special. Good thing, I'm sure it would have been horrible. read more

I often wander in here on cold afternoons in the winter time for some lunch. During the afternoon, I find the place empty. I can only hear the water trickling from a small fountain. When I sit in Sweet Basil Thai, it is quiet and serene. Peaceful, even. I have only eaten at Sweet Basil Thai when I am alone. I like to be here when I am alone. The staff is very friendly and kind. They are always very attentive and they answer all my questions very fully. My favorite dish to get is the Pad See Ew. Those wide noodles! So soft, so succulent to the taste. I don't know what I would do without them. Although I have only been in here all by my lonesome, I wouldn't hesitate to take a friend or a date here. I'm seriously surprised by the inconsistent reviews this place has received. I've ordered here twice, once for takeout and once for delivery and both times have been enormously satisfied with everything from the food to the price to the service. Perhaps part of it is what you order: so far, their eggplant dish, pineapple curry, the drunken man noodle, pad see ew and avacado salad have been right on the money (all either tofu or vegetarian). Nothing above $10, all fresh ingredients, delicious leaving me feeling full but not queasy afterward. And as far as how it stacks up to other Thai restaurants, I'd say it's competitive at this price point in general - and the fact that it's the only real option around makes it even more of a gem. So advice: maybe best to stick to the vegetarians dishes for takeout or delivery, because this place can really rock those orders. read more

Sweet Basil deserves a better rating because it is a very solid neighborhood place. It isn't Gourmet, or Authentic, or Artisanal, or Innovative. It is simple, fast, and delicious thai food that satisfies the craving. This place has become my go-to for delivery because they are fast and courteous - always under a half hour in Crown Hts. There are other choices for thai nearby, but why bother? Last night we had Drunken Noodles, Green Curry and Green Papaya salad. All thoroughly delicious (and still hot!), just like every other dish I have had here. Not Fatty Crab, but solidly above average. Don't listen to the haters. Just enjoy it for what it is. read more

Sweet Basil! They are pretty good! Besides the really intimate ambiance (hint: date night anyone?) I really loved the service. The staff was quick and and friendly. They made my dinner night out a real joy. I usually get my favorite dish at any new place wherever I go. Drunken Noodle: a perfectly spicy blend of noodles and chicken and in a generous portion. I gobbled that up quickly! I also tried the Paanag Curry: less spicy, but still has a kick, in a thick creamy sauce and the veggies were cooked tender. I loved the display of it all. Very good and they portioned the rice well with the curry. Overall, its a wonderful place for thai food. You're hungry? It will hit the spot. Plus their Thai Iced tea definitely hits the spot on those really hot days (especially now). I plan to go again because this place doesn't break my bank. read more

Everything was great, food was ready for pickup before estimated time. Shrimp fried rice was delicious

For months I'd noticed a small paper sign on the security gate that said Thai restaurant coming soon as I walked by every day. I didn't think too much of it because I never saw any work going on. Then rather quickly I started to see work and an opening date posted. I was excited to have a little more variety in the neighborhood, but I was also worried that it would be just another bad attempt at Thai like Suhi Tatsu has tried (with bad results). We got into check it out on opening weekend. The service was good, very attentive. Since the place is new we ordered a variety of staples that we have a pretty good idea of what they should taste like so we could have a good benchmark of the food. Everything was good, some were better than others. For appetizers the spring rolls were average but the green papaya salad was overdressed and had cashews instead of peanuts (not bad just unexpected). Both of the entrees we ordered were pretty good, I would have preferred a little more spice on mine but I'm sure that can be arranged next time. For desert we ordered the mango coconut sticky rice which was probably the low point of the meal, the Mango was way under ripe and the rice was barley sweet. All in all Sweet Basil is a welcome addition the neighborhood and I think we'll be back. read more

Cute date place on Franklin Ave. It was super blustery outside on the day I went, so if you're seated by the door it gets pretty chilly. Its nothing too too special but it hits the spot if you're craving your standard thai dishes, and plus the service is quick. I really enjoyed the fried tofu appetizer, its like little pillows of tofu that carry the sweet/sour sauce. It was enough to share with 3 people. read more

Sweet Basil has the best Thai food I've eaten in the area, but that's really not saying much at all. I've tried it a handful of times, including delivery, takeout, and dining in, and my experiences have been really hit or miss. Service is fairly good, and sometimes the food is pretty tasty, but I've had more disappointing meals than satisfying ones. Ordering most of their noodles often lands you with one congealed mass(/mess), and the flavor doesn't make up for it. I've tried the pineapple curry twice, and although it was delivered hot and spicy the first time, ordering it during a dine-in dinner resulted in under-spiced curry with very little flavor. Overall, they're too inconsistent for me to rate them any higher, but I do appreciate that they'll go out of their delivery zone for a $20 minimum order. If you're craving Thai in the area, or if there aren't any other Thai restaurants willing to deliver to you, Sweet Basil will help fill that void until you can get somewhere better. read more

Not sure why all the bad reviews but I was very pleased and couldn't ask for too much more. I hate giving out too many 5 stars but I can't think of one thing more I needed or wanted. It's a small spot but well decorated without being imposingly trendy like "look hipsters here we are!!!" Dimly lit but casual so it doesn't have to feel like a date. I went here once with a friend early evening and we shared the coconut soup (flavorful and plentiful), rock shrimp appetizer (sauce was delicious!), Mongolian chicken (so savory, like Thai soul food) and the glass noodles with chicken (great light and clean dish without feeling empty). I came another time on my own for take out at lunch. I ordered the coconut noodles and Thai wings. Dang those wings were good. My taste buds tingled just recalling the flavor. The side sauce is great and I could eat with fries or a burger or pork chops or anything edible. Honestly I'd just eat the sauce alone despite strange stares. Very crispy and meaty that hit the spot. On both occasions the service was excellent. The male server was very professional yet comfortable. Not too overbearing or tip begging but gave enough attention when needed. And when he boxed the leftovers I swear I didn't even realize he left with the plates before it was packed. Surprisingly fast but the food wasn't slopped in. read more

i hadn't eaten Thai food in a while cuz of this whole "being healthy" thing i was doing, which I'm not doing now. I should note that when i say "thai food" i mean "pad see ew," which is the only thai food i've ever had, because the first time i tried pad see ew i knew it was all i needed to be happy and that i'd regret ever ordering anything else. I may have cried. I remember tears, but may have just been drunk. Anyway. What I mean to say is that it's possible my expectations were a bit high, in that I was really wanting some sweet, noodley death. With sauce. Like a fat noodle with chicken death. Like poetic-like. Like how the great poets of the past used to write about pad see ew. But it wasn't death! It wasn't crack. Or weed. Or meth. Or whatever it is that you hold up as a paragon of bliss. It was just....well, mediocre pad see ew. It was meh. Which is maybe worse than gross because with gross I'll stop eating, but with meh I keep plugging away, hyper aware of the 150 grams of carbs I am putting into my gut without the placating foodgasm that pad see ew has often offered me in times past. Which is come to think of it maybe why I stopped eating pad see ew. But it's on my street and it was only 8 bucks. And I'm lazy? (that's not a question). We live really close to Sweet Basil, and finally decided to try it and support one of the new businesses popping up on Franklin Avenue. The exterior isn't exciting in the least, but the interior is really modern and warm, with small rock tiles covering the walls, dark wood tables and chairs, good lighting and music. My portion was big--almost too much food for me--but cooked well. The menu listed it as spicy, and being a white girl I didn't know if that meant really fucking spicy or toned down for the non-asian palate, so I opted to have it cooked mild. Mistake! It was still flavorful but there was no kick to it. Next time I will definitely try the spicy. The chicken was tender and the plethora of peppers were cooked to the perfect tender-crispness. My husband's portion of fried rice was, unfortunately, 2/3 the size of my plate and didn't satiate his hunger at all. Fortunately, I'm a light eater and he polished what I didn't eat. ;) I wish they had more duck dishes on the menu, but other than that minor quibble, we'll be back again. :) read more

I do have to say though, the day time chef makes a mean pad Thai and the night time chef makes a mean rock shrimp. The service is good and they are friendly. The place is clean, cute and cozy. Order for delivery! Called to place the order as there is no online/app ordering available (boo!). At the end of the order the total was ~$12 off from what I calculated based on the online menu. I asked the person on the phone why there was such a price difference and she stated she didn't know. I finally asked if the prices had been increased. She stated "Oh yes! We haven't changed it on the website though". Lame! This left a bad taste in my mouth, like I was getting scammed...(over reacting?) My favorite type of curry is panang and I like to add pineapple to it. They charged me $2.00 extra and did not inform me of the price differnce. Mind you, I am not cheap but I like to be informed. Plus $2 for some pineapple!? C'mon now. I also ordered the Thai Spring salad (originally $5, now $6). The size of the salad was inapproporiate at the older price and ridculous at the current price. Perhaps the size of the salad is larger in the restaurant?
