I was in the area and looking for a new place. When ordering pizza, I prefer to order online instead of calling and I also prefer to pay ahead of time. I also like when places have websites which isn't always the case for pizza joints I've noticed. Ordering was quick and easy as they use a convenient app. The price was on pay either way other locations I have been to in the area. Interior was small but clean. I don't see many places that sell by the slice so that was good. I thought my pizza was good, I love the sauce and I thought it had good flavor. I came in the other night to pick up my small pepperoni pizza that I had ordered over the phone. Airy fluffy dough. Nice crunchy outer crust, thin & regular. Good balanced flavorful sauce. Melty stretchy cheese. Fresh tasting toppings. And not the kind of pizza that needs a roll of paper towels to soak up the oil before eating, lol, seriously. Decent priced as well. If you want to experience this pizza at its full potential, eat it at the restaurant. Pizza ovens are the bomb! This light and airy dough has a very thin and crispy bottom layer, so keeping it out of a box allows for immediate flavorful crisp and soft pizza Heaven. We toaster oven heat each slice out of the box, again, when it gets home. The pies are good sized so we can never finish it all there. The people that work at this small cozy place are really nice. We decided to give the new management a try the 1st weekend they took over from Jim. I'm not gonna lie, it was the blandest pizza I've ever had! However, we heard they were experimenting with the recipe and taking feedback, so it only felt right to give them another chance. We ordered delivery through Slice yesterday and the pizza was delicious! No, it's not Jim's recipe but Sweet Basil has re-established itself as the best pizza joint in town! New owners. They have Jim's recipes. Their side today was what you'd expect of Sweet Basil's. Delicious. Floppy. Flavorful. Soft. Perfect. I wrote this half way through my slice. I got to the crust, it is very thin now. I loved the thick soft almost bagel like crust. But the slice was still delicious. They plan to experiment with their recipes as they are from another pizza place. So once they start that, I'll be back to compare. If you like a certain item make sure to voice your opinion to them. Ordered 2 mediums - cheese pizzas Probably better off going to 711 ... closes thing I can compare it to Sauce was not bad but the pizza was not good. Super floppy... cheese wasn't even on the pizza.. slices weren't even cut all the way through and all were cut in different sizes "half ass cutting job" when you lift one slice the whole thing comes up and rips into the neighboring slice Stop being lazy and cut the pizza right Service was below average ... The pizza is great! Only bad thing is that they are always closed when their posted hours say they should be open. Makes it difficult to not completely switch over to Domino's who has better deals/prices or the 2 other pizza spots in Duarte. Half the time I come by, they are closed. But I keep coming here because of the pizza. read more

I am a Jim recipe purist of sweet basils pizza. As of right now sweet basil is now under new management. At present, the original pizza that people knew sweet basil for, is sadly gone. The bread is not nearly as sweet, the cheese and pepperoni taste different. The bread/crust were surprisingly soft, so kudos to the new team for that. I tried the pizza DAYS after new management took over, and that pizza tasted like bland dominoes pizza. I'm excited to say it's much better, but still lacking that signature sweet basil taste. I'm not sure anyone will ever taste the same signature Jim's Sweet Basil pizza again, but I'm surprised to admit that I will be supporting you guys until I can taste improvement and something resembling a unique delicious flavor. New owners took over for Jim over a year ago, still great deals on Pasta & slices. Great local spot to get a quick slice and soda. Under $8.00 for (2) Slices and a Coke. This place makes their own dough so it blows away the Fast delivery joints like Lil' Ceasar's and Dominoes. The old Mom & Pop joints are a Dying breed in America, so it's nice to see a Place give customers an option by just buying individual Slices. read more

Pizza, chicken and wings were all really good but felt like it could be even better. Breasted chicken was the best of the three, but seemed like it was a little under cooked and could be crispier in parts. Maybe like 1 min more in the broaster? Wonderful flavors though and the parts that were crispy were wonderful. Pizza was a very close second. Really good flavors and crust, but to be fair, I only picked up a few slices so who knows how long they had been sitting. Anyway, will try a full pie next time and review accordingly, which is only fair. Last but not least were the wings. Just seemed under sauced, but still really good where there was sauce. Will need to ask for extra sauce next time and all good. This might not seem like a great review, so I want to be clear how good things were and probably could be better. It was kind of late on Sat night as well, which should be an excuse, but could be why everything was just a little of from perfect. On top of all that, just having an option with decent fried chicken and pizza is a plus. Easily one of the best pizza places in the SGV. No frills just great high quality delicious pizza. Yes the owner here is up there in age and he may not move the quickest but he is serving up arguably the best pizza in the SGV. Order a whole pizza instead of the slice when it comes out fresh it's way better. So for what this place may lack in service and decor it makes up for with its pizza. Which is why you went in the first place. To start the mozzarella they use here is very high quality. Easily comparable to that of the pizza in NY. What makes this different is the sauce and the dough. Very justifiable price for the quality of the ingredients. Don't forget to put the homemade basil on your pizza! So if you are sensitive and want really nice customer service and mediocre pizza yeah maybe check out the other spots in the surrounding areas. FYI the owner is a one man show so as far as their hours go plan accordingly. He may open a half hour late or close up a half hour early. This is not some big franchise/corporate business. This is a neighborhood mom and pop with way better pizza than you are used to! read more

My fiance has been wanting to try this place for awhile now. But I knew it wasn't going to be that great when the first thing you see is the worker (or perhaps the owner?) sitting down watching TV and not standing up to greet him. We ordered the Sweet Basil special, was told that it would take 20 minutes, and he didn't take payment. He continued watching the game while another worker from the back came and made the pizza. Finally, when it was ready, we were then charged for the pizza and left. The pizza was mediocre at best. I wasn't really expecting much, but my fiance was. There was barely any sauce. Haven't had Sweet Basil in a couple months...I thought I'd treat myself today and Jesus Christ all mighty I damn near started to cry when I opened up the box. Went here based on previous reviews and when I got there was told they had recently changed ownership , but went ahead against my better judgement and ordered a pizza, BIG MISTAKE !! They had no menu, the pizza was overpriced and was one of the worst pizzas I've had, tasted like a frozen pizza. Crust was too thick , sauce and cheese were tasteless. Food was decent, according to my 9yo daughter. Bad customer service - I felt like my order was an annoyance (2 pepperoni slices, 1 cheese slice). There were no slices available at all. The reason I came here was because I could order by slice according to the menu. It was just me and the two kids tonight so it seemed perfect.. I was and am fine waiting 15-20 minutes for my slices... but dang...so uncomfortable. He seemed a bit nicer after my kiddos came in but it really rubbed me the wrong way. Customer service is important for a public business so I'm hoping they see this and correct it. Also, the bathroom disgusted me.
