Parking can be a hassle, i'd recommend parking next to UPS store as the plaza is free and available. Service could've been better, the girl who was helping was mostly kind but didn't really help or suggest any of her favourites or popular ones. However, still had an easy time to look over the items through the glass, and the help of Yelp was great for opinions! The cream frosting is loaded to the top, so if you really enjoy cream frosting this is the spot! This is a super cute bakery shop right in the heart of downtown Kirkland. I love Kirkland and a good bakery, so I have tried this place three times now. It's hard to find a birthday cake when you have a dietary restriction. I've tried a number of gluten-free bakeries in the Seattle area, but Sweet Cakes was the first bakery that truly impressed me with the quality of its gluten-free offerings (and that's despite not being an exclusively gluten-free operation, which is saying something). Other places try to hit multiple markets by making all of their baked goods gluten-free AND vegan, and sometimes soy-free, nut-free, etc. on top of that. I'm glad those options are available for those who need them, but when those are the only options offered, I tend to steer clear. I'm only avoiding wheat, so I prefer to still enjoy the flavor from ingredients like milk and eggs whenever possible. (But for those of you who ARE gluten-free AND vegan, don't worry--Sweet Cakes has you covered, too.) Their customer service is also top-notch. They usually ask for 2 to 3 weeks notice for custom cakes, but when my husband's plan for my birthday cake from another bakery fell through at the last minute, I had to place an order with only a week's notice. I explained that I didn't need anything fancy. I just wanted to HAVE a cake for my birthday. They were very understanding and whipped up a delicious pink champagne cake with raspberry filling on short notice. Now I go back to them every year! read more

Absolutely incredible! I am at a complete loss for words at how amazing these folks are! They made my a gem wedding cake for us and it was literally the prettiest cake I have ever seen! Sweet Cakes is under new ownership, so we were excited to pay a visit and indulge our sweet tooth. We were not disappointed. On our first visit, we tried the white chocolate raspberry scones, which reminded me of scones I've eaten in England -- with a tender crumb and not overly sweet. We particularly enjoyed the fresh raspberry filling, a nice change-up from jam; so, so good. We were not done, however. We picked out two desserts to share over the course of two days. The first was a beautifully presented small fraisier cake, which comprised a thin sponge layer topped with patisserie cream and decorated with slices of fresh strawberries. Oh my! It was heavenly. Our second dessert was a fabulous lemon tart, which was essentially a mini lemon meringue pie. The creamy lemon filling was perfect -- not too sweet, not too tart. Now, I can't eat dessert every day, alas, but when my daughter told us she was visiting downtown Kirkland yesterday, I sent her on a mission to find a cake that we could all enjoy after dinner. Her choice. She picked out a gorgeous white chocolate raspberry cake, which looked almost too good to eat. Almost! This delightful vanilla cake filled with raspberry jam, featuring just the right amount of white-chocolate frosting (i.e., not too much), and topped with fresh raspberries, was a big hit. As is often the case with a cake like this, less is more. After we all helped ourselves to a slice, we put some away for tonight, and decided to share the rest with our neighbors, who also gave it a big thumbs up. Obviously, we are big fans of Sweet Cakes, which is handily located in downtown Kirkland, along Park Lane, across from Cactus. We used to order a 4" cake for our birthdays every year. The cakes taste good, but I'm done with them. I recently ordered the cake online, and paid. I got a call from the shop a day or so later to tell me that the cake was now $35 rather than the $24 that was posted on the website, and that I paid. Did I want to continue at the higher price? No! They cancelled the purchase. I feel the shop should've honored the purchase that I had already made and paid for, not called to ask for more money. Ordered our wedding cake from here and the cake was literally the best cake we've ever eaten. We had a coconut cake, with strawberry filling and buttercream frosting. They sent us home with the test kit prior to the wedding, all of the combos were amazing but the coconut/strawberry/buttercream combo was the best. All of our friends and family loved the cake as well, they described it as a strawberry pop tart We live in Tennessee now but when we visit we will definitely be visiting for some cake! We ordered our wedding cake for our wedding in September of 2012. I will break-down my review by the variety and complexity of services: Consultation: 2 Stars, The owner is incredibly pompous and has a huge chip on her shoulder, she "doesn't need your business" type of attitude. In hindsight how did we not see it? Delivery: 5 Stars, cake arrived in perfect order at the appropriate location. Cake: 2 Stars, the cake like many of the local bakeries cuts corners and the cake tastes bland and flavorless. Lots of sugar to mask the lack of flavor. Wasn't impressed! But by the time you eat the cake at the wedding, it's over and who cares right? The Kicker: 1 Star. The owner promised us that we would not need to save our cake topper and she would make us a free 6 inch cake that looked exactly like our wedding cake. Pretty cool right!?!? Well that's where this review is coming from. Sweet Cakes will mail you this tiny little coupon a month or two early and expect you to go put it in a safety deposit box or something, and god-forbid you happen to forget it when you show up to pick up your cake. I was barraged, belittled, yelled at, the rudest things...all in front of other customers! We spent $500 at this place and our thank you was "Well you need your coupon" and she put the cake right back in the fridge. Our experience may not be others, but personally, because of the level of aggression and failure to correct their mistakes, this place is a mistake for your wedding. Just go with somebody else! There was a lot of sugar in them to mask the fact that they had a very bland flavor. Even the raspberry on top of the lemon cupcake was mushy and old. Gluten free cakes, that don't taste any different? That's pretty cool!! The customer service received was stellar. I think it's pretty awesome that we stopped by after 8pm on a Saturday night and they were still open!! I'm sure they get a lot of business from the folks like us, finishing up dinner at Cactus. I couldn't help but stare at the window front wondering if they'd still be open after our meal was over! The cake itself is very moist. It had the taste of classic bakery cake. I loved the cherry cake, which was full of chopped maraschino cherries. The red velvet, was not really classic tasting, but it tasted good. The strawberry cake was ok. I really liked the white cake, which had an almond-vanilla flavor. Now let's talk about the frosting. I don't know what they put in it, but it's gritty. It's almost as if they add dry milk to it. I wish I knew, so I'm not representing them falsely. Maybe it's just that they use too much powdered sugar, which dries out and gets hard and gritty. Not sure, but if the frosting was tweaked, these cakes would be much better. It's way too sweet, and the texture is simply off. Sweet Cakes is definitely worth stopping by if you're craving a cupcake treat. I've gained five pounds since moving here. My son chose the red velvet cupcake and my daughter the triple chocolate, which is gluten free. I ate a couple of bites each (the Mommy tax). The red velvet was very good indeed, both the cake and the frosting. A very classic tasting red velvet cake with a cream cheese frosting. The frosting was not two sweet or dense. Cake was very light but flavorful. The chocolate cupcake was lacking. The whole thing worked only because it was entirely enrobed in chocolate ganache. The cake itself was not great (dry and granular), one of those cases of a gluten free cake that does not work. I've had most excellent gluten free chocolate cakes so I was quite disappointed in this. Sweet cakes is a hidden gem of Kirkland area. They have the best cupcakes (better than Trophy Cupcakes or Cupcake Royale) and even have mini cheese cake ( second only to Confectioners). I gave them a second chance. A different person helped me. She was also very nice. We started talking and she mentioned that the restaurant supplier had shipped them the wrong refrigerated cases. Essentially these contained fans that circulated the cold air (and essentially blew away the moisture.) I tried their cookies and brownies. The peanut butter cookie had a pleasant but mild flavor. The texture was again bordering on too dry. The brownie however (which came from a different refrigerator, I should note) was quite delicious. It's a dense cake brownie with a thick icing, both of which mash together into a strangely satisfying goop in your mouth. I'm reserving full judgment until they get their problems ironed out.
