I've been a customer here for 25 years. The customer service has been consistently the same... terrible. You can expect to be greeted by a rude individual at the pastry counter or the register. Speaking of the register watch out for their additional fees and charges. The charges would not be so bad if the food was halfway decent (for the price) or the service was great. Eggs are premade- so don't even bother with those. on a typical summer day they will be out of everything by 10:30am even though Winn-Dixie is right across the parking lot. It's open until 2:00 but kitchen staff usually cuts it off about 1:15. I don't blame them though... Such a miserable group of people working there, I would try to duck out early too! I'm sad this island staple has gone downhill over the years... There is competition on the island now- we don't have to tolerate this anymore. read more

Really wanted to like the place as we try to support small businesses. I had a chicken salad sandwich, my husband had a rueben sandwich. Both were $9, his came with chips, mine did not. There was reasonable amount of chicken salad on the sandwich but it tasted very meh. Sweet Mama's Bakery is a great breakfast spot. Order from a tantalizing display case of baked goods which includes the best cinnamon roll that we have found on the island, also delicious fruit turnovers. If you know, you can order bacon which comes in a generous portion. While it may be missed by some visitors, the locals know it well, as the friendly cashier recognized most by name. I haven't visited Sweet Mama's for a few years, so I stopped in today for some pastry. I was not impressed with their service as I had to repeat my order an astounding six times. I still can't wrap my head around how a request for a simple cheese danish and a cookie can be so confusing. I was even less impressed once I got my danish. The pastry was tough, heavy, and had a strange lardy quality. The "cream cheese" filling was a sickly sweet syrup. The cookie was no better. The recommendation was spot-on because the food I tried was delicious. I visited on a Saturday morning and the restaurant received a steady stream of customers, mostly locals with a lot of take-out orders. The restaurant can be hard to find if you don't know where to look. It's in the Winn-Dixie shopping center and it faces away from the street, so you won't see the restaurant until you drive into the parking lot and explore a little. If the 1627 Frederica Road address doesn't work for you, try 98 Retreat Plaza. This is a simple, casual, no frills restaurant. There isn't much to speak of when it comes to atmosphere or ambiance. The interior amounts to a single office-like, strip mall space with a glass display case for baked goods and pastries, an ordering/food prep counter, and a bunch of easily movable small tables in the dining area. Sweet Mama's is only open for breakfast and lunch, Monday-Saturday, 6:45am to 2:30pm. The menu consists of sandwiches (breakfast and lunch), muffins, buns, danishes, doughnuts, bagels, cookies, and cakes. They also have salads, a soup of the day, and housemade chili. Expect to spend anywhere from $2.50 to $4.50 for most breakfast items and $6.50 to $9.50 for most lunch items. I had a "Meat, Cheese & Egg Biscuit" ($4.50) and some Pork Pops ($0.60 each). The meat, cheese, and egg biscuit consisted of a flaky biscuit with a round sausage patty, a thin slice of cheese, and a thick egg patty. The egg wasn't prepared in typical egg breakfast sandwich fashion. It looked steamed (or something). The sandwich was fresh, delicious, and filling. The sausage meat was savory and the egg was light and fluffy. The Pork Pops are a Sweet Mama's signature item. They are small, almost bite-sized pieces of bread, sausage, bacon, and cheese. I saw customers ordering this by the boat load. Well, maybe not boat load, but plate load. 12 pops here, 12 pops there. They were tasty and addictive. At one point, the kitchen ran out of pops. I noticed some of the foods were reheated in a microwave prior to serving. Service is, for the most part, efficient. You pick up your order at the counter no matter if dining in or taking out. Our trip to St Simons would not have been complete without a stop at Sweet Mamas. The food was delicious. A nice hearty biscuit complete with butter and the fixings started us off. The Pork pops are what drew us there and they did not disappoint!!! Really delicious!!! But the topper to it all was the sweets. I was going to give the restaurant 5 stars but the $0. 50 credit card surcharge at the register really turned me off. The sweet tea is pure sugar, might also double up as syrup. Sold in a square not unlike a brownie, this cake is moist and delicious, and its frosting (cream cheese with nuts) is divine. 2.) Pork Pops. A northerner like myself should be completely baffled by this phenomenon. A tiny bite-sized biscuit is made with bacon, sausage, and cheese, built-in. You eat a bunch of these savory gems, and call it "breakfast." 3.) Good sandwiches and lunch foods. 4.) All other cakes are out of control. While the food is always amazing, to say that the staff is rude is an understatement! I lived in Glynn County for over 20 years and have always been a Sweet Mama's lover. Every time I come home, I always bring friends and family to Sweet Mama's for the amazing pastries and famous pork pops. After today's visit, however, I can with 100% confidence and certainty that I will never be back. I have never been treated with such disrespect as I was today. And Christy, who checked me out, was the rudest of all. She gets the prize for the worst attitude! We headed over to Sweet Mama's after I burned the breakfast I was cooking at our vacation condo. Best decision ever! My husband had a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit and I had a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. Both were delicious, and the biscuits definitely taste homemade. But the shining star of Sweet Mama's is the pork pop. It reminds me of a sausage ball + a biscuit. Sausage, bacon and cheese mixed together in a bite-size biscuit. They give you a free one on your first visit, but we ended up ordering two more while we were eating, and another half dozen to take back to the condo with us. This place is absolutely not a fancy place. After you place your order you round up your napkins, spoons, forks & knives and try to grab a table. We split a six pack of Biscuits with Egg Squares and Sausage Patties and a couple orders of Bacon. No calories and carbs in this breakfast! Food was quite good. My Mom grew up in St. Simons so we went to the island quite a bit when I was growing up. One of the most memorable things was sweet mamas and the pork pops. I absoutely love them. Unfortunatelt, both Yelp and Trip Advisor still have it down the road on Frederica Ave. Their coffee is brewed but good. Their pastries are just as good as the reviews promise. I was hungry and it was pretty close to lunch so I ordered a Cuban sandwich. It was hot, tasty, and loaded with pork. While the seating area was close to empty, there was a steady flow of locals picking up orders to go. The staff are laid back and friendly but the service is quick and efficient. I definitely gained weight at this place. They have something called Pork Pops that are kind of like a biscuit but smaller; these pops have bacon/pork and cheese in them. Their biscuits are hearty and I have a hard time finishing the egg casserole and cheese one.
