I was recommended this restaurant by some friends, so I decided to try it out. This place is a very cute little restaurant in downtown Oak Harbor. Edwin and I got there around lunch time seated right away, there wasn't a lot of people eating so it was nice. The server was quick and we were able to get our orders in. We ordered the crab rations for apps, and I got the chicken Phad Thai, and Edwin got the red curry with chicken. Both of the food came out in a reasonable time. I loved both of the flavors each dish brought and it was all quite filling. I would definitely recommend trying it out for some good Thai. read more

Was visiting Oak Harbor and dropped in for lunch. Started off with a Thai Ice Coffee (not too sweet and topped with half and half). Was a refreshing beverage on a warm day. For my lunch, I ordered the chicken Phad Thai which came with a side salad and fried spring roll. The noodles had good flavor and when topped with some of their chili oil was really really good. I enjoy Sweet Rice. As a vegan, I often get the fried tofu and that, alone, is pretty filling. I've had a couple of different curry dishes and enjoy both the pineapple and peanut curry dishes (although "no spice" is still too spicy for me!-- I'm a little over-sensitive...) I love the artwork and decor in this restaurant because it feels very authentic. Wooden carvings and other pieces are abundant here. Hosts and wait people are always kind, patient, and helpful. This establishment has changed ownership but they retained menu items from former owners plus extra special offerings for each month, we were told. The co-owner, Ploy, is super friendly and sweet. Hubby and I ordered the green papaya salad, cucumber salad, deep fried spring rolls and orange chicken with sauce on the side. Everything tasted wonderful and authentic. We also liked the sticky rice and mango for dessert. As usual, I ordered the Thai tea but they are awaiting their license for liquor so I didn't have the added vodka in my Thai tea. Really good Thai food. The staff is incredibly kind, and it is refreshing to have a good service yet again... Inside the restaurant is really pretty and thoughtfully well done. I actually had the option to sit on the balcony overlooking the ocean on a sunny day! Since this was my first time to eat at sweet rice, I ordered their famous peanut curry. Red-based curry with heavy peanut influence. Solid proportion of vegetables to the protein... I ordered Thai spicy and it was not at all. So I ordered a side of Thai chili peppers in fish oil, which made up the difference. The dish itself had an overarching sweetness to it, which I have not had before... and I think it overwhelmed the dish just a bit... I will have to go back and try another dish or two, and see if their name runs throughout all of their dishes. That being said, it is a return place for sure! I was picking up food to take home but the service over the phone and also when I got to the restaurant was super friendly. The food was delicious. My gal pal and I split Phad Thai with chicken and the vegetarian delight (although we added chicken to make my friend happy) with an order of rice. I will say, the new "stars" for spice level has definitely changed so we did have a hotter experience on the phad thai at 2-stars, but it was still absolutely delicious! I was sitting in my easy chair at home contemplating my dinner and the available options to me. At home I could make a tuna fish sandwich on Russian Rye, I could order pizza or wings, or both delivered. I had been thinking about Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken all day and decided it would be my dinner. Normally I go to 1-2-3 Thai when I eat Pineapple Fried Rice, but I decided to go somewhere else tonight and I picked Sweet Rice on Pioneer Way. I ordered some Spring Rolls for my appetizer and the Pineapple Fried Rice for dinner. I arrived right at 5:00 pm when they re-opened for dinner, so no waiting to be seated and my food selections were brought fairly quickly. The Spring Rolls arrived first. They were nice and hot. The roll was light and crisp and the filling was very tasty. I really enjoyed them. I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken spice level 4 stars out of 4 (a.k.a. Thai Hot). Anyone that has read my reviews knows I enjoy spicy food. This "Thai Hot" Fried Rice wasn't all that hot... to me. The was a noticeable spicy flavor, but didn't precipitate any sweat nor any sinus draining. So I was mildly disappointed. However, the Fried Rice was very tasty! It had just the right amount of cashews, and Pineapple. There was a small wedge of lime and garnished with a few sprigs of cilantro (I think). The staff was friendly and attentive. Sweet Rice impresses me each and every time I'm there. The staff are so incredibly friendly and welcoming. Their dishes and appetizers are excellently proportioned, seasoned, and balanced across veggies and protein. This peanut curry is so delicious! The tofu had a good crisp on it that really worked well with the sauce, noodles, and veggies. We also got calamari and it's one of my favorite calamari of all time! Pineapple curry is made with tomatoes and canned pineapple and is virtually flavorless except for the taste of spice and coconut. We had a not so delicious lunch here. I ordered the Tiger Cries Salad and it was not good. The steak definitely was not grilled over a flame and it was not a tenderloin. It was most likely a marinated flank steak that I see in lots of these photos with the curry. There was so much liquid at the bottom of the bowl that made the lettuce soggy. Not good at all. The glass noodles in the peanut curry were not glass noodles they were ramen noodles and the flavor was off. The sticky rice was good and the chicken tempura was good. Last week we stopped in for lunch while searching for vegan options. Due to COVID-19 the restaurant had limited seating inside. Staff were observing proper safety protocols. Hubby ordered the Veggie Delight with soft tofu. This was a great tasting dish. The veggies were nice and fresh and the sauce was very good but left you with a garlic breath. It is good for keeping vampires away. I ordered the orange tofu with brown rice. I have to say I have had a lot of Orange sauces all over the United States and this was the best orange sauce I ever had. And the veggies and tofu were perfect. Sweet Rice is my absolute favorite dinner location in Oak Harbor. The servers are so attentive and friendly. The food is absolutely amazing. My kids gobble down the Chicken Satay. The cucumber salad is always refreshing and crisp. If they have specials going on it is always a good idea to check out their offerings. If you are looking for fun cocktails the Ginger Lime Cosmo can be made "sweet" or "sour" and is delicious either way. Ok. I've never been a fan of Thai food. My yayas set it up for my sister's birthday so I was "forced" to go. WOW, was I impressed. Everything my sister ordered was absolutely delicious. This is a really high 4 star place. The food is really, really amazing for Whidbey Island. There isn't much to choose from and to compare when it comes to Thai, and Sweet Rice wins it here. My husband and I love Authentic Asian food since we lived in the Far East for a few years, and we cry if it's mind blowing. We didn't cry here, but we seriously enjoy the food here more than almost any Asian place on the island. This is our go-to restaurant. Ordered spring rolls, mai tai, and beef gold garlic dish...2 Star. Took about 5+ minutes to get my drink with one other table in the house and two people on the floor. Spring rolls are vegetarian but they are delicious and a good portion. Their sauce for the rolls is not the normal red, sweet sauce; it's better. Mai tai was made very well. Beef dish with white rice had the desired flavors and a light spicy kick, as I was hoping for with a 2 star heat request. Not crazy about all the julienned cabbage with the gold garlic dish but it was mild flavor. Painfully slow service. I have eaten here with my partner a few times, and every time our visit was almost 90 minutes, and not by choice. I felt captive since I was constantly waiting on the server. The meals took almost an hour to bring out, out beverages would go empty, and far too frequently, no waiter was visible to ask for refills. I am greatly disappointed with the service. One of the first visits, the restaurant was genuinely packed, and we waited for a table, so that first visit I saw as a result of being slammed. Subsequent visits have had far fewer patronage, and same lousy service. The food is OK. I have had the See Ew and Kee Mao here and boy for me, they needed more flavor and spice. I was able to load up on the table spice but I thought a spicy would have been that. It wasn't. The portion sizes were smaller than most other places around Oak Harbor that serves Thai. I have given this place a proper try, both my partner and I will likely not return to Sweet Rice. Reading other reviews, others have had the same issues so at least I know it's not because we are two gay men. read more

The Orange Chicken had hard and dry chicken, and the onion was almost raw. Summer rolls were okay, however the sauce was terrible. I thought it was supposed to be a peanut sauce ... I'm not sure what it was. This was a takeout order and my first time ordering from Sweet Rice. If I do order there again, it won't be for either of these dishes. read more
