I was way too ambitious and thought I would make my daughter a "Ballet" cake for her 3rd birthday. Luckily I realized before the big day that I was never going to pull that off. I called Kim and Jakes and they had no problem making a cake in time. But the real 5 stars came when I saw it. It was literally the cutest "Ballet" cake I've ever seen. Complete with fondant ballet slippers with ribbons on top. Now, the real real real reason for the 5 stars... the cake was amazing! I've had custom cakes before and been so disappointed when the cake has an "old" taste as if it were baked 10 days prior. Not this cake. It tasted like it had just come out of the oven that morning. After over a week, I received one message that they needed to speak to me before doing anything regarding the hugely disappointing cake and so any actions would need to wait until I returned from my week-long business trip. The following day I received a very kind and reasonable email from the owner, that "It's very important to us at the shop we address issues as soon as possible," apologizing for the delay, and noting they would refund this and email a receipt since I was away. Almost two weeks later, nothing had been refunded to my card and when I inquired, the previous person I had dealt with said, "These things take time." Now two weeks after the kind note about addressing things soon as possible and issuing a refund... still nothing. Seeing the pretty cake images pop up in other reviews on this page, I'm again stunned by what we received (can't believe ours was from the same place) and that the loop has not been closed. read more

I visited Boulder recently and was SO happy to randomly find gluten free AND yeast free AND vegan buns at Whole Foods!! And they were delicious!! The best gluten free bread I've ever had - perfect texture. I don't remember the last time I actually ate bread due to celiac and food intolerances. Just ordered the strawberry cream cake from Kim and Jake's cakes for our 5 year old's birthday, and it was OUTSTANDING. First, it looked beautiful. More importantly, it was one of the best, most moist cakes we've ever had. Our guests were raving about the cake, and we all demolished it. We are not gluten free so don't let that label scare you off. One of the best cakes we've ever had, gluten free or not. I'm excited to try their other flavors. This place was a little hard to find, but well worth the search! Since there were no cupcakes to be found when we arrived (and that is what we were looking for) we had to improvise. We tried a lemon/avocado cake/bar thing that was incredible. We tried a whoope pie - I can't remember what kind, but it was decent. The standout among all the sweet treats was the coconut cake. Oh my! The seven minute frosting, that slight hint of almond...I want a piece right now. On my recent trip to the bakery, there was a young lady at the front register (not the one I have seen there before), and she could not answer my questions about allergen ingredients in some of the available flavors. She also seemed to have no idea on what flavors they had: I asked twice and got two different answers. Then, when I got home I found 2 hairs on one of the cupcakes. Such a letdown. Gave them 3 stars because they were one of the tastier gluten free options in the area, but maybe not good enough. read more

I contacted the baker for a wedding. My initial interaction was rude, they expected me to know everything about their business. The same type of treatment continued where I wasn't informed appropriately of costs, in more than one scenario. In the end, I wasn't treated well and wasted time and money here. Since I had to go gluten free 7 months ago for medical reasons, I've heard people rave about this bakery - especially about it's GF baguettes. I still really miss good bread, so I thought I'd give this place a try. Walking in I was hit by the most delicious bakery smells! I saw a pile of large baguettes and was very hopeful! I bought a baguette, 2 cupcakes, a baby something-or-other (spice cake with lime glaze) and two boxes of cookies (chocolate chip and chocolate chip/cranberry/pecan) for the tune of $35. The spice cake was good, but the portion was tiny for the price. The baguette was....bad. The only way it compares to a real baguette was the shape. It was soft instead of crusty on the outside, and the inside was still wet and uncooked in places. It tasted NOTHING like a real baguette, but more like so-so wheat bread. Even toasting it didn't make it better. Talk about disappointing! The chocolate cupcake was a bit tasteless, but edible. The coconut one wasn't. One bite and it went in the trash, it was so bad. The cookies had a nice texture, kind of like a corner brownie piece, but the taste was too salty. I like salty-sweet things, but not SALTY-sweet things. The ratio was completely off, making their cookies a disappointing mound of salty calories. I wonder if all the people raving about this place have been gluten free for so long that they've forgotten what baked goods are supposed to taste like. Not one thing I purchased made me want to go back. The best thing about this place is the smell - but the taste of their food doesn't come close to matching it. It's typical for gluten free fare - pay three times the price for so-so food that's low on taste but high on calories. read more

We actually met a friends of Kim and Jake when we were vacationing in Hawaii. So, when it was time for my 30th birthday cake we were excited to try out this new bakery. Needless to say, they did not disappoint. We had a wine tasting party and ordered the Vino Rosso cake. It was not only beautiful, but delicious as well. I find myself thinking about their bars that you buy over the counter all the time. Really, it is a DAILY temptation to drive there from Louisville. Most of the time, I hold myself back. My favorite is the Citrus Avacado bars. I also love the Caramel Rum and Red Velvet bars. Not a fan of the picnic cakes and would not order a cupcake if I could get one of their bars instead. Went into Kim & Jake's this morning for their amazing gluten free cinnamon rolls. They didn't have any in the display or on shelves. I asked if they had any at all. Jake(?) told me to hold on & he went into the kitchen. He came out with wrapped up cinnamon rolls that he was going to use for samples today. I asked him about much, he said I could just take them. I was shocked & happy, then told him it that today was my birthday. He had a huge smile on his face. It was an amazing way to start the morning & a birthday. I've been quiet happy with Kim and Jake's Cakes since they opened a couple of years ago. They use high quality ingredients, the owners as well as their employees are helpful and friendly and their cakes are so flavorful. The Strawberry Margarita cake is moist and delicious. Their Chocolate Stout cake is rich and the flavors harmonize well. Their Red Velvet cake with cream cheese icing is so good and is exactly how you would want Red Velvet to be. They also have many gluten free offerings including cake, bread and cookies. If you can't get to their location in South Boulder, stop in to Whole Foods on Pearl St or Alfalfas. I want to start by saying their cakes taste amazing! We used them for our wedding cake and went to 4 other bakeries. Kim and Jake's were overall the best flavor. The people were friendly and the cake was delivered on time and everything. However, our cake's appearance left something to be desired. The design was very very simple nothing fancy. I didn't see it until our wedding had already started (and at that point what could be done?) but it was not what I had visualized and was very disappointed. For a simple two ribbon cake with a topper and cupcakes I was sad it turned out that way. We had two Love Birds on top and one of the beaks was very crooked and looked as if one of the birds had been hit by a bus before landing on our cake. read more

I do love my cupcakes, and Kim and Jake's is no exception. The bakery looks small, but don't be fooled. I tried a pretty traditional chocolate with cream cheese frosting cupcake as well as one of their "petit fours" (hey, all in the name of research, right?) Both were delicious,but the petit four was my favorite, and not a traditional petit four. It was essentially a mini slice of really moist cake with layers of frosting in between.
