It's interesting to me that a customer from the same day mentioned how nice the staff is, because this is third time I've been here and every time the staff has an attitude. First let me start by saying the mattahorn cake is delicious and I do come here a couple times a year when I get a craving. However, my mom ordered a wedding cake from here and on the pick up day we opened the cake to realize one of the names was missing. My mom was very upset and called to complain instead of getting even one sorry we got a there's nothing we can do. No percentage off or even apology. After that my aunt went here where she found a piece of glass in the cupcake. This time she did at least get an apology but that was it no money back and let all be honest the service even not mentioning these two accounts leaves a lot lacking. My family and I are regulars at Sweet Surrender. It's the one and only stop for a quick cake pick up for all of our parties and gifts for friends and family. Matterhorn is the best along with pretty much everything else. Instead of going to Walmart or places for a cheap dry sponge cake with their book made decorations, come here for the talk of the party cake that no one will forget! I fed 20 people with a 9 inch cake and had left overs. I accidentally thought 3 cakes would feed 100 people at my mothers anniversary party and had 3 half cakes left over but everyone had to take a piece home since it's always that good. When you walk in, it's a boutique filled with all kinds of lovely & unique items. Towards the left is where you'll find the bakery. Don't just skip over to the bakery because I found some great gift items to go along with the birthday cupcakes I was intending to purchase. You'll find cute, kitchty, clothing (a little more expensive for my taste) but there's also some great cookbooks, candles & jewelry. There's also some really unique home decor and less expensive gift ideas as well. On to the best part though, the bakery :) So many choices! Holy crap there's crazy awesome cupcakes to boot! Cookies of all variety & even some mini cheesecakes. Decided on the s'more cupcakes, sugar cookies & a few slices of cake. The raspberry almond cake was epic y'all! So I went to the dentist today and as a reward for no cavities, I went to Sweet Surrender. I usually go to Sugar Twist which is also delicious. I'm super picky when it comes to bakery treats because I usually do them myself. I just wish I could get away with charging $6 a slice! Lol. Although I do not have a huge sweet tooth, I wanted to grab a few little things and was especially excited about the gift area. It was a busy place, even mid-day on a Tues and the bakery was lined up. Staff were not at all rude, but hurried yes, to get people through. No small talk! The Matterhorn cake, I found out is life-changing! :) I knew I was going to buy a slice going in there. Looking at it, it just looks like a chocolate cake with white icing. It is so much more than that! The texture and density is perfect. Not too sweet, so tasty, just right! Also tried the tiramisu. Very good. Not sure that there is the traditional alcohol in it but if not, I understand why. Sitting in the fridge at home here for me, is one of their chocolate chip cookies. I hope for $2 for a small cookie, it is amazing. Actually, I found the shop expensive overall. It cost almost $17 for 3 little things but the quality does shine through and the presentation of the items is great. The whole cakes for any occasion would be appreciated by anyone. I loved the look of the pink champagne cake! The gift shop had some very cool items. Cookbooks, seasonal X-mas, jewelry, cute, trendy clothing, unique cards.. I brought my 7-year-old niece here a couple weeks ago to "help me pick out some cupcakes" and she was so busy checking out the party stuff that I had to make the cupcake decisions all by myself. Not only can you get delicious cupcakes and baked goods here, you can get all sorts of gifts, greeting cards, party supplies, and even some clothing & sandals. The baked goods, of course, were far more interesting to me so I stuck with their calling card - the amazing cupcakes. Their flavors are apparently on some sort of weekly schedule, the Avalanche is (I believe) their bestseller and an easy reason to make a stop here -- rich chocolate cake, buttercream frosting -- but I was a bigger fan of the s'mores. The week before my Brother's birthday in February, we were watching the tv show "Best Thing I Ever Ate" when Giada De Laurentiis came on. My brother announced that she was his favorite chef - quite an honor since we are both addicted to quite a few cooking shows. Imagine our amazement when she started talking about a cake/cupcake, the Matterhorn, baked right here in our own Bakersfield! I decided to secretly acquire this cake to surprise him for his birthday! Sweet Surrender is not the easiest store to find. It's tucked away in the back of a little shopping plaza with no view of the street, though there is a sign out on the street to warn you of its presence. Luckily I'd armed myself with a Garmin with its address pre-entered, and so I found it easily. Sweet Surrender is a bakery, but it is also full of the most amazing variety of cutesy knick-knacks and crafty items. There was a line (apparently, the lack of a street-visible location was not affecting them adversely) but I didn't mind waiting since there were so many things to look at. And yes, I did impulse buy an item or two. I bought the large Matterhorn cake, as we were planning to share it with our whole dance class and while it wasn't cheap, it was worth every penny! I don't even know how to describe why this cake was so wonderful. It is a round layered chocolate cake with white icing, but it is just so moist and delicious! I've never had a better chocolate cake! I bought a red velvet cupcake to consume on the ride home and it was quite delicious also. I'll definitely be back! read more

This place was featured on the Food Network station for their Matterhorn cake, and yes, it does live up to the hype. The staff is very friendly with great service. They also sample their cupcakes for you to try as well. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy yourself a cup of coffee. They also have a shop with all kinds of home decor to Childrens goodies and old fashion candy. The only thing I would have to say could be a challenge is seating. They do have tables and chairs but very limited. It is best to buy yourself a dozen and take it with you. I bring all of my out of town guests to this place for them to experience. (But I could buy a dozen cupcakes and do the "tasting" myself for less money?) I'm ashamed to admit that in the 17 years I lived in Bakersfield growing up and countless trips to visit, I had never been to Sweet Surrender. I even lived close by, and still never went. Recently, I was home for Thanksgiving and my mom mentioned that Sweet Surrender was going to be featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" show for their Matterhorn Cake that Giada de Laurentis apparently loved. Well, that piqued my curiousity. Before heading back to LA, I decided to stop by and try some of their cupcakes, including the Matterhorn cupcake. The pink champagne cupcake was light and not too sweet but didn't taste anything like the pink champagne cakes I remember, but my bf really like it. The cake was really moist and the frosting was a good consistency. The Matterhorn cupcake was good, but not great. I really couldn't see what the hype was about. It was good chocolate cake and decent white frosting, but outside of that, I don't know what made it special to be on Food Network, but hey, good for them. I ain't hatin'. The banana nut cupcake, however, is a different story. I could eat a whole cake of this one. The cake was moist with perfect banana and nut flavors and the cream cheese frosting was delicious. Seriously, one of the best cupcakes I've had. I usually prefer red velvet and peanut butter chocolate cupcakes, but wow, this one had me wishing I hadn't split it with the bf. The Neiman Marcus bar was also great, but very rich. I'll be back for more banana nut cupcakes (totally different from a muffin with frosting) and maybe try some of their other flavors. Do not miss this bakery! I used to be a professional pastry chef- no joke I taught at Scottsdale Culinary Institute from 2001-2007. This place is amazing! And a total deal for what you are getting. I walk right by the chocolates (because they are not made in house and go straight for the bars and cupcakes. I am not normally a cupcake person but these are straight up delicious. They are famous for the Matterhorn cupcake, but if you miss out on trying the Lemon Curd refrigerated cupcake and the Salted Pecan Turtle cupcake a little part of your culinary soul will die inside! The Salted Pecan Turtle cupcake is literally the best cupcake I have ever had, ever (even better than mine). There is about $7 worth of pecans on top with gooey caramel and chocolate chips on a chocolate cake. They have a little bit of everything for everyone and they use real ingredients. If this bakery were in LA or Scottsdale it would be the biggest thing ever and cost about 2 times as much, so go there before they raise prices (as they should!). I have recently taken 2 of my friends here and they love/hate me for introducing them to the palace of calories and food comas! (so worth it!) I would go off any diet any day for this place (and if you are going to fall off the wagon do it here- don't waste calories on things that suck and this place will never do you wrong!). Things I have had: Lemon tart- awesome- tart like more of a European bar, so if you want it sweeter do a lemon cupcake. I have been here a few times, once for a birthday cake for my husband, and a few other times for picking up a cupcake for various friends' birthdays. I have always had a pleasant experience, until the last time I went on a cupcake run. It was a Sunday, after 4 pm. We strolled up, got out of the car, and I did notice that the hours said they closed at 4 pm. There was an employee outside watering the grass, so I asked her if they, in fact, closed at 4. She said no, that it was 5 pm. So we went inside. There were 2 people behind the counter, literally just standing there. No greeting when my family and I walked in the door. We went to the counter, my husband asked how much a brownie was, the employee said "three dollars", and seemed irritated that he asked. I ordered the cupcake for a friend, and was rung up in silence. She didn't ask what color box or bow I wanted. I just got the impression that we were wasting their time, even though they were just standing around, apparently waiting for customer's anyway. I wish I had asked her name, only to call and inform the owner that her staff seemed miffed to actually wait on customers. It's also cluttery with all the other non food items they sell here. I brought my nieces and nephews here once so they could pick out their own treats. The girls at the counter were snotty and rude. We spent a good $40 there and none of the cupcakes were really good. They look good but the taste is disappointing. Was watching "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" on the Food Network and heard Giada raving about a cake she had from Bakersfield. I just can't picture Giada driving down Ming Ave looking for Sweet Surrender! Anyway, w/ an upcoming visit to Bakersfield, Sweet Surrender was stuck in my craw . . .
