I walked in and I was bombarded with cupcakes galore, cookies, bars, and chocolates. This joint is also a boutique ---- they had cute purses, clutches, dresses, and tops. They also had a Hello Kitty section! AHHH! Give me Hello Kitty and I'm yours! My hubby found a Hello Kitty key cover and purse ---- why did he temp me? I picked the key cover --- I had to control myself! All of their cupcakes are soooo moist! And the frosting ---- so creamy! That's the two things I want in cupcakes ----- creamy frosting and moist cake ---- that's what makes a cupcake! ORDERED: Carrot ---- favorite Red Velvet --- little bits of chocolate mixed in the cake White on White ---- another fav ---- simple, not too sweet, just right! This place is amazing! I waited to review until after a few times we visited and is my conclusion: First visit we got a red velvet cupcake, pink champagne, chocolate hostess, an orange something cupcake and a lemon bar. We all devoured our picks and they were equally moist and tasty but a little much on the frosting I had to scoop some off but that did t go to wasn't my son was quick to ask if he could have it, he even wanted to eat the wrapper because there still was cake on it. Late that night I snuck a piece of the lemon bar and was in awe it was soooooo good I took it to the room to share with my husband and he couldn't stop saying how delish it was. The second time we went we arrived at 10 am to purchase a whole cake for an anniversary dinner that day I learned that if you want a cake for later that day u better get one as soon as they open I was on a cake search a few weeks ago and it ended with a whatever cake from Costco:( This time we got the red velvet that they wrote on for us. That was the only cake they had that wasn't already cut into so if your going to get a whole cake get there early or order ahead of time! After dinner our guest raved on how super the cake was we had leftovers that we took hm that didn't last long in the fridge. This last time we went here we got another lemon bar a slice of lemon chocolate cake a rich chocolate cupcake, carrot cupcake, champagne cupcake and Matterhorn cupcake. I actually first tried this place several years ago while visiting a friend who was on a work trip to Bakersfield. Really, there is no reason anyone should go to Bakersfield, but damn, these cupcakes may be worth it... Cuz I made a day trip out here from LA just because I was bored and wanted to see if their cupcakes were as good as I remembered. Yeah, it was worth every bite. I don't regret a single moment I spent sitting in LA traffic trying to get here. Pink champagne and lemon are my favorites. I honestly love this place! Their cakes are always so moist and delicious. Yesterday was the first time I had an issue with the cake. The cake was very salty and could not be eaten, which is very unlike them as we order cakes here almost monthly and have never had a bad one. I was hesitant to call/go in because I wasn't sure if I could even get my money back. However, I called and Traci (the manager) was very understanding and asked if I could come in with the cake. I did and before I even said anything she had already tasted another cake from the same batch and agreed there was some mistake. I was refunded and given a free cupcake for the drive back and was pleased with the overall customer service. People make mistakes and I understand that so there was no reason to get mad. I also appreciate a business who can own up to their mistakes as no one is perfect. I love this place!!! I will explain why 4 stars in a second. I loveeee almost all their desserts. I've had almost everything. I really recommend the Matterhorn for chocolate lovers and Lemon Delight (only comes in a cupcake). The Tres Leches is really good too, coming from someone who eats it at a lot of Birthday parties. The last time he brought down the infamous Materhorn, we thought it was too dense, and this one is pretty heavy too, but really good. On the day of the graduation, I showed up and the cake was ready to go. I paid over the phone, and all I had to do was walk out with my cake. Wooohoo! Oh sweet baby Jesus. The treats at Sweet Surrender are a sugary dose of heaven. The shop is a cute mix of desserts and hand-lettered crafts. On the dessert side, I had the vanilla cheesecake and frosted brownie during my last stop in. SO GOOD. I especially loved the vanilla cheesecake. It was a little cheesecake cupcake topped off with whip cream and a cherry. It wasn't too heavy but also not too light. It was a perfect consistency and I loved it. The brownie was also really good. So I ordered 24 cupcakes for 2020 celebration. Picked them up today and was very disappointed. The quality is not consistent in the decoration. I had made that clear when I ordered mine that I wanted the sprinkles to go to the paper which is how they were displayed in the case. That is not what I got. I also bought 6 chocolate. When they brought the six out for me to the cupcakes had baked poorly making them distorted. This resulted in the aides being somewhat smashed. They replace them when I asked. I asked how much it would cost to put a buttercream poinsettia on top. Now I know that would take maybe 5 minutes of effort to do that, but their answer to my question? "Oh no. We are too busy and can't ask that of our bakers." Seriously? Fine, I took my business to another bakery and always will from now on. We threw a surprise party for a friend yesterday, and purchased a Matterhorn cake for the occasion. We didn't want a Matterhorn cake, but the girl working the counter assured us that Sweet Surrender could not make us the cake we wanted (even though it was depicted on their website). I didn't really mind as the Matterhorn cake had been much touted as a perfect dessert ever since Giada DeLaurentis name dropped it on T.V. Perhaps Giada's recognition created enough of a revenue stream for Sweet Surrender that service and quality are no longer necessary. The cake was not some mind-blowing creation but rather, a round version of the generic rectangular birthday cake one would purchase from Vons or Albertsons to celebrate the birthday of a one year old. To make matters worse, the sparkling candles we bought didn't work either. With that said, we've had good cakes and cupcakes from Sweet Surrender in the past, and I initially thought maybe they just had a bad outing. However, the subtle differences in offerings from a year ago leads me to believe Sweet Surrender may be on the decline. read more

I recently bought a cake that I found pretty disappointing. It was a 4" Matterhorn cake for a friends birthday. Price $18, with tax $20. The cakes decorating job was done cleanly but I wish they would have told me that it isn't really a cake that writing looks good on. When we cut into the cake we were surprised to find it was mostly frosting and the cake itself was dry. The frosting was really heavy and super sweet. You couldn't eat that much of it, especially considering the frosting to cake ratio. Later that night we had a $10 cake from the grocery store and it was significantly better. The strawberry shortcake is absolutely phenomenal. This cake is so addicting. Come early because it's always sold out.

Although this is not my favorite Bakery in Bakersfield, it is pretty amazing! I love to pick out 6 cupcakes to take home and sample. All have been delicious with my favorite being Butterfinger, Chocolate Sea Carmel, German Chocolate and Turtle. Now the frosted sugar cookies. I love them. The shortbread type cookie is delicious and the frosting is so satisfying. I can make myself sick on these. Now the other Bakery in town that specializes in the frosted sugar cookies are great too, however I like both equally as they are different and tasty in their own ways. Their cakes are also excellent as well as their cookie selection. I must say, I have many Gluten Free friends and I buy their Gluten Free cookies for them. I happened to try some and they are the best Gluten Free I have ever tasted. That is the sign of a great product. Love visiting the boutique also. Both are Amazing and I recommend for anyone to try. ------------I have a wheat allergy hence why I don't try much bread, cookies or cakes but sweet surrender has a awesome number of gluten free products that's are out of this world amazing and can compare to any big city bakery. First off this review is just for our wedding cake. The staff, the cupcakes, the boutique items, and pretty much everything else is worthy of at least 5 stars. I think they make the best red velvet that I have ever tasted, some heavenly tres leches cake, and they have perfect little gifts for my wife. This was one of my favorite places to go to in Bakersfield, so you are probably thinking did he mean to put 5 stars instead of 1? No, because we liked this store so much we entrusted them to do our wedding cakes. It was going to be a large full sheet cake, and then a two tier wedding cake for pictures and also to eat. We spoke with the cake manager about our wedding and We left feeling a little rushed and unsure if she understood what we wanted. We went back down there and showed her an exact photo of what we wanted. So everything was set and ready to go. When the woman dropped off our cakes, the two tier cake looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I saw her bring the cakes in and set them on the kitchen counter. I then asked her why is the cake like that, and she stated that it was hot outside so it was melting. This was the middle of October, so it was cooling down, and we were explained by Sweet Surrender before hand that once the cake was in our possession that they were no longer liable for anything that happened. But the damage to the cake happened before we took possession. I tried to call her boss or the owner, but this was back when they were closed on Sundays, so I had no choice but to use the cake. Even with the best photographers there was no way to make the cake look presentable. The designer of the cake also did not use the right colors, or ribbon we asked for. It looked really bad in our photos, and this was the one blemish in an otherwise amazing evening. read more

I've always loved the sweet treats I've purchased over the years from this local store. The custom cakes are always a hit with my family. I went in the other day to order a cake & thought I'd take a peek at the gift shop. An older woman was fixing displays as I entered the store. She glanced me over head toe & continued to fix things. I noticed her & went to say hello but noticed she turned away not welcoming at all. I'd seen a high end jewelry line they keep in stock & asked the woman if they still had it. She replied yes, and directed me in the direction of the jewelry. Again, no welcome in, or greeting when i came in the door. Most surprising I wasn't even told let me know if you'd like to see anything. As the jewelry I wanted to see was behind glass.Too bad for them cause I had just got paid, make good money & am an impulse buyer. Customer service and kindness really goes a long way. I don't think I'll be ordering or spending any money here anymore. There are sooo many talented & competitive places here in town. If Willy Wonka had a sister who liked to bake, sell candy, and other cute odds and ends, she would be the person who owns and runs Sweet Surrender. Their red velvet cupcake is the standard by which I judge all other red velvet cupcakes, and it is with great sadness that we in the Bay Area are deprived of Sweet Surrender's red velvet royalty (and yes, the other flavors are also divine). They're moist without falling apart, and they taste amazing. Furthermore, they look as decadent as they taste. I think the success of both flavor and appearance can be attributed to the chocolate they have in the cake. Though I can appreciate the clean lines, modern design, and specialization of cupcakeries now sprouting up all over the place, Sweet Surrender doesn't have an ounce of pretentiousness in it, and I also like that they sell things other than cupcakes. read more

I've spent so much $ at this store. I haven't been here for a while. The service was terrible! Although, there was not a line behind me, the young girl was rude and bothered and even rolled her eyes twice when I asked about the price of some merchandise. She was even yelling across the store for her mother who seemed frustrated as well. I have never left a review, but I will never shop there again. Customers are supposed to be treated with kindness, respect and appreciation. Service is everything and employees should be home if they are not grateful to be working.
