I've been here a few times to get a 'healthier' option for food. Every time it takes a little bit out of me because paying over 10 bucks for a salad makes me cringe a little. Granted the service here is friendly and if you go with the make your own salad option you can actually load as much veggies as you want but paying an extra couple of bucks for chicken eh, just eh. On top of that, the last two times I've been there they had a pretty bad fruit fly problem. Now I don't give out five stars often. As good as a place is, I always assume there is something better. But this... this is the BEST salad I have had in Dupont Circle. THE BEST salad. My boss offered to buy my department lunch today. We could pick from BGR and Sweetgreen. And while I could opt for a delicious burger, thus satisfying my emotional eating fix due to my insane deadline, I chose a salad. If I was going to be crying on the inside from work, I might as well be healthy on the inside to, right? I made the perfect choice. Fresh veggies lifted my mood, a delicious dressing tied it all together, and wasabi peas delivered the perfect crunch. In the 7 minutes I had to eat lunch, I was in heaven. First off I love this place! The staff is very friendly and moves fast. However the design is horrible! At lunchtime the line goes all the way outside down the sidewalk! They need to redesign the inside, perhaps get rid of the frozen yogurt station to have more room to make salad. This might work in the winter time when sales of yogurt might be low. I prefer Sweetgreen over Chop't, It's a delicious, healthy lunch option! I love that they change their menu with the seasons. My current obsessions are the Portobello/squash/wild rice bowl made up of organic wild rice, shredded kale, warm portobello mushrooms, butternut squash, caramelized onions, beets, basil, miso sesame ginger dressing... it's so nutritionally dense and filling. I also really dig their sweet potato/kale soup. You can also choose to build your own salad with pretty much any salad topping you could possibly think to want (huge variety of lettuces as a base, veggies, fresh fruit, dried fruit, meat, eggs, avocado, croutons...) This review is *only* for the yogurt. I've never had their salad, nor do I intend to, because I don't eat salads for meals. Plain frozen yogurt with three toppings for less than the competition in the Dupont Circle area ($4.40 with tax the last time I was in). And it's good, not too watery, tart enough to taste like yogurt. If you're looking for flavored yogurt, you need to look elsewhere, but plain yogurt-tasting is my favorite flavor. I've been going here more than to TangySweet lately for two reasons - price and location. While TangySweet's plain is very good, it's like $1 more with three toppings now. My first night in DC, just got off the plane, starving......Sweetgreen provided the perfect sweet solution. It was conveniently right by the Dupont Metro, open late, and a healthy choice compared to the many restaurants in the area. Sweetgreen is a lot like Plutos or the many customizable salad bars (for the health-crazed Cali folks you know what I'm talkin' about!). They also make their salads into wraps! All the menu salads are $8-10, little more pricey but has more ingredients (like protein, avocado, etc.) so it's pretty worth it. Regular salads are around $6-7 + choice of greens + three toppings + a "crunch" (croutons, wasabi peas, tortilla strips, etc.) + many dressing choices + extra for protein I forgot the name of the salad I got but it was: greens, chicken, corn, hearts of palm, wasabi peas, avocado, and miso vinegrette. I replaced the wasabi peas with mushrooms. The salad came with a slice of soft chewy bread. I gorged on the salad and was glad I still felt somewhat healthy. Inside of this location is really cute, I feel like I'm sitting in a forest and I swear a cute little squirrel is going to hop on my shoulder. The bench tables and stools are carved from wood and the seats are tree stumps. The wall is decorated with tree branches. I love that is place is brightly lit and, though small, doesn't feel cramped. PLUS: I love how they are "green" in many ways...selling cute reusable salad containers for frequent Sweetgreen patrons and providing biodegradable utensils! read more

So, after having a mediocre chicken caesar salad here one night, I returned a couple of weeks later, got one w/ extra dressing and it was significantly better! By far one of the best caesar salads I had ever had! After growing to love their chicken caesar salads, I was a frequent customer to their various locations. Unfortunately, their creamy caesar dressing has been replaced by an oil based dressing. It's NOTHING like their original caesar dressing and is almost too spicy. It's just not good... Yes, I understand that oil based dressing is healthier, but being healthy is not what I'm looking for when I order a chicken caesar salad (or wrap)! Sooo disappointed! I'm not really sure why this place is classified as a FroYo place. Though I think they sell FroYo here, it's primarily a salad shop. I've visited Sweetgreen (in Dupont Circle) twice in one week with a friend (we were both so enthused by it) and thought it's a pretty cool concept. This restaurant chain competes with Cosi, Chop't, and quite a few other similar shops which cater to the health-crazed DC "workaholic" population. I still prefer Cosi and Chop't (since they have more "savory" salads, while Sweetgreen has sweeter salad options), but Sweetgreen can certainly hold its own among DC salad shops. Both times I visited, I ordered the Kale Caesar salad, which came with kale + chopped romaine, roasted chicken, parmesan cheese, grape tomatoes, parmesan crisp, caesar dressing, fresh lime squeeze. It had a sour-tangy taste to it and it was quite delicious. The servers are generous with the chicken, though do note that if you ask for more chicken, they will charge you (and they won't necessarily tell you before they give you more chicken). I would certainly visit Sweetgreen again, but since I prefer more "savory" (rather than sweet) salads, I feel that the Kale Caesar is likely the only salad I would enjoy from here. read more

A healthy alternative in DC yay! I wanted something on the lighter side and stopped in for a salad. I always love the mix and match salad places when their ingredients are fresh and they have some interesting options. This place is like Mixt Greens in SF only the DC version. They listed what farms some of the ingredients came from, had tons of options and dressings and the cost was similar to the salad bar at Whole Foods. This is a great alternative to all the heavy overpriced food in the neighborhood. read more

Sweetgreen, one of the newest establishments in the current Fro-yo turf battle, is definitely my favorite. Before you go, please note that there is only one "flavor" of yogurt, and it's called "sweetflow." It's plain. It tastes like cold, plain yogurt. If you do not get any toppings on it, it will still taste like cold, plain yogurt. This place is not in the business of selling artificially-flavored yo-product, they're a company with a simple message: eco-friendly, sustainable, and healthy... hence the name: Sweetgreen. A small yogurt will run you $4.40 (with tax) and comes with three toppings out of a possible ten to choose from. If you go during a typical down time, the servers, who don't speak much English, will usually give you more than just the typical spoonful of berries... but you have to ask nicely. If it's a lunchtime or dessert-time rush, forget about it, you're lucky to have the granola remain inside the compostable cup. Yes, they're slightly on the expensive side when it comes to salads - a $9 Chic Pea salad would be about $2 less at Chop't - but the yogurt is among the more reasonably priced in the area. Tangysweet charges the same amount for a small with one topping. Out of the three, the Dupont Circle location is my favorite. They all sell the same food for the same price, but the Bethesda one is overrun by soccer moms with silicone lips and pretentious high school kids. The one in Georgetown is nice, but it's small (it's also the original) and cannot hold more than 10 people inside its confines. The one in Dupont, typically, has the nicer clientele, kinder staff members, and really clean bathrooms. It has an industrial/environmental feel that sounds strange, but definitely works for them. Plus, they have those Dyson super hand dryers, which I think are pretty cool. What drew me in to Sweetgreen initially, and keeps me coming back, is the company's commitment to the environment: tables and chairs made from old bowling alleys, compostable silverware made out of corn, 100% renewable wind energy. Expect delicious yogurt or salad before you enter, and you'll leave satisfied. read more

This 5 Star Review is for TANJA's super service at sweetgreen in DuPont today! I ordered a 'don't beat my kale' something or other, with a few substitutions. Tanja was patient, flexible and happy to fulfill my order with specifications. She was knowledgeable about all the different mix-in and made suggestions. Example: Call me crazy-but I just don't goat cheese. So when i requested to sub out the goat cheese, instead of staring at me while I name a random cheese they may or may not have- she said sure, and pointed to and named each of the cheeses they had. Queued to do so only by my initial request. This kind of initiative in customer service is a rare jewel and deserves recognition. As for quality of food, everything tasted delicious and was very fresh. Great fresh drink choices too! Fresca Machata was refreshing. Environment was clean, well lit and had a good buzz of energy created by clientele and personnel. Thanks for lunch and the great vibes! read more

I go to sweetgreen a lot, and it feels like recently they have upped their prices and become skimpy on how much they fill the bowls. The bowls are only half filled sometimes prompting me to have to ask to please put more of a certain ingredient in. In addition, for those of us who don't eat grains like rice, it's frustrating to say all greens only to have the server not add some additional to make up for the loss of the rice, which would make sense. read more

Not a fan. They're salads are ok, but generally two salads and drinks cost somewhere in the range of $30, which seems a little pricey. I've also had issues with the staff being somewhat snooty, most notably when I once asked for cheddar cheese on my salad. Now, I was under the impression that cheddar had a long history of being a perfectly fine cheese, as I can buy it in a number of fancy iterations at Whole Foods. Not so at SweetGreen - the person behind the counter looked at me as though I had asked for Velveeta, sneered, and said, "We don't have THAT here." Well, ok then. Nice place for a large salad. The food was good although I've only had the Kale Caesar salad but plan to get another salad the next time. The place was clean and the staff friendly and fast. I always get my order to go, but will eat one day (always at the DuPont location where parking is atrocious). Only downside, depending on the person, is that they are credit only. Of all the salad places around DC, I really like Sweetgreen the most. I think their ingredients are the freshest and they have a lot of local produce. I wish they delivered like Chop't does. If they did, I would order from them a lot more. If you try and go during lunch hours, expect to wait a bit (10-20 mins). Yegads, what a salad. I had the August special: arugula, feta, cantaloupe, cucumbers, mint, sunflower seeds, lime juice, olive oil, and sriracha. On a 95+ degree afternoon, can you imagine anything that would sound better? Didn't think so. My salad was everything I dreamed it would be. Yes, I could recreate it at home, but by the time I buy all those ingredients and take the time to chop them up, $8.95 isn't sounding like such a bad deal. Sweetgreen's regular menu includes many options with similarly high quality ingredients in mouthwatering combinations (all of which can be gotten as wrap sandwiches instead). Highlights: curry pineapple yogurt dressing on the Curry Gold; the falafel/tahini/pita chip combo on the Chic P; and super-healthy versions of the Cobb, Greek, and Caesar salad with not an iceberg lettuce leaf in sight! They dress the salads in front of you and give you a choice as to whether you want a little dressing, a medium amount, or a lot. I have to say, I am loving DC's local chains! I was going to say I'd come here every day if I lived in DC, but I tried Teaism today and so would have to throw that into the mix... so maybe every other day, Sweetgreen. read more

I work in Dupont, so this place is a natural "go-to" for lunch if I didn't have time to pack one. The Good: The salads. Fresh, clean, and easy! The lines go pretty quick, so no need to worry about the wait. The interior is designed really well and I love their decorations. Their manifesto is written on the side and the season is written in lettering by where the salads are made-- really cute. The seating area is pretty nice, spacious for Dupont, but if there's no space and the weather is bearable, go to the circle and eat your salad! Be sure to sign up for their rewards card/app! You get a free salad on your birthday month-ish and also get a free salad every 100$ you spend there. Yes, it's expensive, but I think you're paying for the quality of food that you get. The Bad: I've had pretty bad luck with the staff here. On instance: I got overcharged for a salad, and when I let the cashier know that the price was different on the menu than what she rung me up for, she gave me attitude and told me that the prices had gone up. I politely recommended that they change the sign for other customers. I will say though, when I tweeted about this to Sweetgreen, they sent me a gift card for a free salad! Pretty nice of them to do that. Great customer service in that sense. I will say though, that the friendliness of the staff has improved in the last month or two. Sadly, this was the first time I'd been to Sweetgreen... even though there are quite a few in NYC. I just never had any time to go to the ones in the city - but this one was close to the Pure Barre in DuPont Circle, so N & I went here for lunch post-barre class! It was her very first barre class, so even though I was craving a hamburger, she thought it'd be smarter to get salads at Sweetgreen. I definitely liked it and it was a smart meal choice post-barre - not heavy but super filling. Service was also great - they were really sweet about me being a newbie and super indecisive and helped me with my final decision (it was some type of seasonal salad). I can't wait to try a New York outpost - the one by my office just closed, but I'll make the time to go to another one soon. read more

I don't often eat out for lunch, but when I do I try to be healthy about it, so I have been thrilled by the upsurge of local chains for salads, wraps, and such. Unfortunately, I have yet to find one that has blown my mind in terms of taste and value, and Sweetgreen is no exception. I do like the set-up and the look of the place, and everything is very clear as far as what you can order and how much extra you'll get charged for items like extra proteins and cheeses. If you are too overwhelmed, you can always order a pre-built salad or wrap, so that's a plus. However, since I'm a vegetarian, I often like to build my own so that I get the right balance of protein and veg that I need for the day. I was also very pleased to see how many of the ingredients are locally sourced. This makes me very happy and is the main reason I wish I could give them a higher rating. After building a salad exclusively out of the limitations allowed within standard build-your-own (and also taking advantage of the bread), I left feeling full and physically satisfied but somewhat disappointed on the enjoyability scale. Just because something is healthy doesn't mean it has to be completely lacking in flavor or seasoning, and this is the trap I feel that Sweetgreen has fallen into. The dressings for the salads look great on paper (pesto vinaigrette....I'm in) but fall short in reality. This isn't hurt by the fact that they don't really seem to know what salt is--not that I want things overly salty, but enough to enhance the salad's flavor just a little would be nice. I have mixed feelings about how costly the salads are. On the one hand, for someone like me it's quite a lot to pay for just a salad for lunch. On the other hand, though, they do use quite a bunch of local ingredients and high-quality products, so I can't begrudge them the prices too much. If the quality of the final product was better, I would have zero problem paying what they ask. But for the flavor that you get in exchange for the price, it leaves one a bit lacking. Still, at the end of the day, I would go back here in favor of most other places. The option of a good salad, the tasty bread, and the environmentally friendly nature of the joint would keep my interest enough to bring me back. read more

Loved it! Initially I simply walked in accompanying a friend to buy her lunch, and I was sucked in by the special salad bowl you could buy for 6$ to reuse. If you bring back to refill they give you a free veggie topping! How about vegetables as incentives! Literally being green, haha. I eat A LOT of salad so this little deal is perfect for me! Anyway back to the food--yum! The salad greens themselves are fresh and varied, not a bunch of shredded iceberg bs, the roma tomatoes were the best I've had in months, the avacado was free of strange brown things, and the chicken wasn't mystery meat. I got the guacamole salad--I think it has a better name but that is essentially what it is. I thought it was cheap, compared to chop't, especially considering the quality far surpassed the competitor. The custom salads, with 3 toppings are 6$. My salad came to 9, what with it being all special and such. Totally worth it though. They're very enironmentally responsible, with their biodegradable dining ware and recycling bowling alley benches. I will definitely go back! I'd like to try to yogurt too. What can I say, SweetGreen has embodied the green movement in a sweet way indeed. From their compostable cutlery and bowls to their reclaimed wood floors to their plantable take-out menus, what is not to love about this wind powered lean green establishment?? And they sell reusable salad bowls and water bottles and bags. They get a big fat A+ from me for these efforts. And maybe I will come and buy that bowl one day, and get that free extra veggie topping. Their bread is awesome and I have enjoyed the salads I have had so far - the Santorini and the Chick pea one. I really want to make my own but the stress of long lines make me falter and pick an already listed one. SweetGreen is what I hope all future food establishments will be like. Fresh ingredients (err, I'm assuming they're buy local as much as poss, but don't think this is a seasonal menu), creative salads, awesome fro yo, and of course, the sustainability ethos, make it worth paying an extra $1 or $2 for, and when I want a salad, I will come here before Cosi and before Chop't. I still feel ridiculous paying 10 bucks for a bunch of leaves, a small amount of other various vegetables, and a bit of sauce but college students always have to say they tried trendy places right? Their salad is a lot smaller than Chop't, but the interior of this place is really cool. The seats are nice, the coat hangers are from real trees and everything is environmentally friendly, making you feel less guilty about leaving a carbon footprint when you eat out. If you want to dine in at a salad place, this is the place to go. If you want to take it out, go to Chop't. Side note: this place plays really good music. yet another reason to dine in. read more

Don't get me wrong, the salads at Sweet Green are some of the best you can get anywhere! BUT, when it comes to customer service, this location is the absolute worst. I came in and requested two salads, and came to describe one of them, and before I could describe the second, he immediately made two of the same, and when I corrected him he gave me a disgruntled gaze; then, when I asked for one of the salads to go, the individual adding dressing kept on saying how do you want the dressing, I replied "to go" and she sprayed the dressing into the salad ... the manager then went up to say "IF YOU WANT THE SALAD THE WAY YOU WANT IT YOU CAN CALL AHEAD AND GET IT HOW YOU WANT." Hey, I thought my (seasonal) Peach and Feta salad with Balsamic vinegar was delicious. It was very filling, tasty, and had just the right amount of dressing. I've had their (not seasonal) Wild Child bowl ant it's pretty good too. They use fresh ingredients and have good customer service at this location. I'm usually a fan of sweetgreen (hence the 3 star rating and not a 1) but the terrible service that I experienced there last night cannot go unnoticed. The two women and two men behind the counter were all moving in slow motion. They also had to look up at the ingredient list for each salad they made. I had to remind them of something they left out, and so did the man in front of me in line. While I was eating my salad, they apparently pissed off a customer pretty badly by putting bacon in her salad and then denying that she told them otherwise. She then stormed out and yelled 'I absolutely said 'no bacon', I don't eat pork.' All in all, these workers were pretty incompetent and it's not like customers really ask for that much. Get it together, sweetgreen. Otherwise, the salads are okay. Been a little bland lately but I it's a good, healthy option. read more

how this place has a 4 star is beyond me. Nothing against this place specifically but i find it hard to spend $15-20 on a salad when they give you a scoop of chicken equivalent to one chicken nugget at mcdonalds. If you get a seafood salad (crab or shrimp) and double up on meat you can easily hit $25. There are a million places around with gourmet meals that can be had for less. The salads at SweetGreen are ok. Just ok. Not great. Not good. Just ok. The flavors don't seem to come together the way they do at Mixt Greens or, to a lesser extent, Chop't. It's sort of like they think of their specialty salads in their heads but don't really bother trying them out before putting them on the menu. As a result, they just seem to miss every time. I think a big part of the problem is the lettuce they use. SweetGreen does not have butter lettuce, romaine, or iceberg. All they have is mesclun greens, spinach, and arugala. Those are my three least favorite lettuces, and they are the least crunchy lettuces. Salads should crunch, which is why people like romaine. Also, each of them has a rather limited use because the flavors are so strong. I will say that I really like that SweetGreen uses local ingredients and compostable products. That's really the only reason I bother going back. That and the locations and hours are better than Chop't or Mixt Greens. read more

Ok, I'm biased on my review. I only went here for froyo, so I can't comment on the quality of the salads or soups. This is a cute little spot. When you walk in, it's definitely green. Green walls, green everything- SweetGreen emphasizes it's green/organic type of culture. In terms of froyo, I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong. I love froyo. But there was only ONE flavor.... and the number of toppings were limited. I chose the small with toppings of strawberry, mangoes, and chocolate chips, for $4.40 (the 10% tax in DC! GEESH!). It was pretty good. The fruits were definitely fresh. However, I wish I had more variety? I could only choose just plain tart froyo. No fun! Still, this happy go luck place has room for potential... just expand your selection, please. :) read more

Either my taste has changed or my health conscious eating has increased, but I'm upgrading Sweet Green Dupont. It is definitely the best Sweet Green for dining in since it has long communal tables. My only advice is stay away from the bacon. It's weird, non-bacon-y tasting deli meat. It can really ruin a salad if too much is tossed in. And major props to the curry dressing, which is good on any salad... trust me. read more

I hate salad. I love SweetGreen. What else is there to say? My favorite salad is NOT a nutritious one: spinach (yeah, I start out harmless & healthy), with black beans, corn, candied walnuts, mozzarella & salami. No dressing, though they have tons to choose from. Lots of toppings available. Questionable English-speaking skills on the part of the staff. Mildly expensive prices. Oh, & there's the froyo. Ohhh, the froyo. They only have one flavor (called "sweetflow," which sounds particularly menstrual) & I'm not super-down with their toppings. But I've discovered a froyo masterpiece: sweetflow with candied walnuts, fresh mint & agave nectar. It's a hipster dessert if I ever heard of one. Amazing. read more

Oh, can we please open one in South Beach? I only know of one salad spot on the beach that offers build your own option, and it has no where NEAR the selection. Sweetgreen features a huge variety of greens as your base, or choose the very delicious warm grain option. Or both! Crazy large selection of proteins (chicken, beef, tofu are a few) and a huge variety of toppings, from veggies to nuts to fruit...you name it. It's super duper!!
