There was not a parking lot, per usual in Ann Arbor. Ended up parking in a neighborhood and walking ~7 mins. Something for you to keep in mind. We love the Bayt Almocha in Dearborn (side note: they have mirrors so don't run into them thinking it's more store like I did) so this felt like a mini version of that location. On that visit, I got the Iced Tiramisu Latte but wanted to try their refresher this time. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. It had a "fake" strawberry flavor and I'm not sure what else to compare it to besides the flavor a strawberry chapstick. I was envying Aidan's Tiramisu and would recommend sticking to getting coffee here so that's why I'm still giving it 4 stars. The store itself is quiet and clean and good for studying. Lots of natural light and not busy at all on a Friday afternoon!

Like I said, everything was super hot for the cold day and the spice / milk / caffeine ratio was exactly what I needed. If you have ever loved a coffee or tea with a little cardamom you will find a new love here. Also, BEAUTIFUL space! The comfiest chairs I think I've ever sat in within a coffee shop. We came at a weirdly early hour and there weren't many others sitting in the shop, so my friend and I chatted and sipped for about an hour. It was great, I would come back on my own to do work with a bev. Hot new Ann Arbor study spot?? Yes please! I just need to get there before every other student. Finally, great service. The person behind the counter was happy to give recommendations, everything came out super fast, it felt so cozy and homey. Give me a brownie and I'm happy to top it with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, walnuts, and even a good cocktail cherry. That said, I love matcha. Thick, green, creamy, and grassy. I enjoy lighter styled traditional matcha too, even poured over ice. Perhaps even with a splash of oat milk. But then again, perhaps not. Really I am less keen on matcha flavored with syrups or espresso flavored with pretty much anything. Great coffee and traditional matcha I believe can be elevated with accompaniments, like an amazing buttery croissant or a sweet and chewy mochi. It's important to know going in that Hazel is beloved by the Instagram set who enjoy the visual appeal of layered and flavored drinks with bright, bold, and contrasting colors. And good for them. Those folks deserve to have a cafe that serves their needs. Perhaps one day I'll have a craving for a $10 drink with cloud foam piped on top as well. And on that day, I'll be very glad that Hazel exists. And I have to give props to Hazel for doing what they do the hard way. They make their syrups in house. They take care in crafting their drinks. They are very customer centric. The owners are charming and very hands on. The space they have created is warm and inviting -- as the kids say these days, it's a vibe. Their success, business acumen, and sound financial management is impressive. The bar for really good coffee in Ann Arbor keeps on going up. Hazel has definitely carved out a niche for themselves. I had high hopes when looking at the IG feed before they opened that the shop would focus on the classics, but I'm old and terrible at social media... and texting. I'm tragically bad at short form, and I do not understand memes one little bit. I really don't know how they do it. I will tell you this much though. It is the most popular selection for birthday cake at work. Yum.

Thanks to fellow Yelpers Allison and Tiffany for getting in here early and putting this spot on my radar. The hours are limited, and up until recently Curious was closed three days a week, which had made it challenging to get in. What initially grabbed my attention were the co-fermented coffees. Coffee beans that were fermented alongside fruit, like strawberries and peaches. The idea kinda blew my mind. I had never heard of such madness, and despite having a personal preference for coffee flavored coffee, I was compelled to try it. Wow! Just wow. In a cappuccino with the creaminess and fat of well textured whole milk, true fruit flavors and aromas poured from the cup. I was smitten. But still, this is flavored coffee, albeit flavored coffee without any syrups or sweeteners. Then there was the hot bloom cold brew. Another concept that made me sit back and ponder how I have been making my cold brew for decades. It made intuitive sense, and tasted fantastic. But I have to say, given my personal preference for straight up coffee, the pour over program is profound, perhaps even poetic. At the moment I'm sipping on a natural process Luz Helena Geisha. Some coffee shops might have this as the top of their line. At Curious, it's just one of many single origin super high quality beans that are roasted and brewed with care to maximize the flavors from within the beans. What does this mean in the cup? Well, for starters the color might remind some folks more of a dark tea than what they might be accustomed to from a national coffee chain or the classic diner. The aromas are delicate and distinct. This brew is described on the menu of being tropical, funky, and delicious with aromas of papaya, pineapple, and watermelon. The flavor is gorgeous. Beautiful balance, confounding complexity, with a long lingering finish. Coffee like this takes time. Do not expect to pop in and out for a quick cup. This is coffee that demands to be savored, and is served as such. Pour overs come in a glass pitcher so you can appreciate their color and clarity. Then you can pour it yourself into a ceramic cup, which has ample room to get your nose deep inside of it to inhale the intoxicating aromas. Coffee like this might be a little more expensive than what you might be accustomed to paying, but it's worth every penny. Plus there are always options at Curious that are a bit closer to earth. It's a spot to treat yourself in a little oasis that at night turns into a meadery. For the record, I am notoriously hard on coffee shops. Curious Coffee is a gem, and we are incredibly fortunate to have this option in our community. Did I say egads? Because egads this coffee is fantastic! Do yourself a favor. If you do have to take your coffee to go, for the love of god take off the plastic lid. Smell the brew in your cup and I promise you will not look back. Take your time. Enjoy. Be curious. JOE'S MARKET: nice little cafeteria that is actually quite underrated, options include freshly rolled sushi, meal of the day that comes with carved meat that is delicious and well made sides, fresh grill, salad bar, soups, a sandwich making station that makes subway style sandwiches, and my personal favorite - the salad bar. OVERALL: food options are surprisingly good, especially for a hospital.
