I've had some pretty bad experiences at various locations in NEO in recent years, but this one was by far the worst. Not only is service unapologetically slow, but EVERYTHING was burnt including the burger patties. Onion rings - burned Fried mushrooms- burned French fries- burned Potato tweezers- burned Burger patties- burned and thin Milkshakes- consistency of milk I tried to capture a few things before it hit the trash, but trust me when I say, I will never return to any Swenson's location. It's sad to see iconic restaurants of the past transition into less than average but that is what Swensons has done. Since the small chain was sold a few years ago the bricks and mortar and service has remained relatively the same but the quality of food has declined to less than average. The hamburgers are no longer sparking the palate. The fish sandwich from today was disgusting in flavor and looked like ground up fish waste when examined under the fried crust. The trainee told me 35 min in that the machine needed to freeze and still wouldn't be ready for "awhile". Eventually ran out of time and had to leave without it. I was in town for a trade show with a colleague who had never been in Ohio, so I made sure that we touched and visited a few places that he would never get a chance to visit if he didn't have advice. So we definitely did the West Side Market on Monday of last week (too bad lots of stalls were closed after a busy weekend). I have been to Akron/Fairlawn/N Canton in the past for visiting the NFL Hall of Fame (as a Buffalo Bills fan we have no Super Bowl wins but a lot of representation in the HOF, which I'd gladly trade for one championship win, ) and I have eaten here about ten years ago. I had a galley boy; one bologna and American sandwich with grilled onions, potato teezers (look them up they are so good!) and a cake batter milkshake. Let's just say my diabetes was not happy with me that day. I do not regret eating here, I only regret not going more than once. In fact, this is the fastest customer service I have ever -ever seen. So, it's a pretty cool place. Just leave your headlights on to be waited on. Then, turn headlights off after they take your order. They will give you a menu if you need one. You can can even tell them to give you a few minutes to look over the menu first if you like. I ordered a Galley Boy, a bologna sandwich, and a banana-blueberry milkshake. The bologna sandwich was quite good and I'd order it again. I didn't like the flavor of the Galley Boy. I guess it's been a long time since I've eaten one. Anwyay, I prefer their regular cheeseburgers. The milkshake was just okay. It was melted enough so that it was easy to drink, but it didn't have much banana or blueberry flavor. Overall the food and service were very good. The food at Swensons in the past has been great. The chicken nuggets USED to be good. Last night I ate their chicken nuggets, which they have changed and now are buffalo wild wing style nuggets. They used to be completely different and were way better before. They also changed their fries to Burger King type fries. The Skyway vs Swenson's battle continues. I live out of state now and haven't been back to the buckeye state in over 10 years. Swensons and Skyway have always been a standard go to choice in NE Ohio for a great burger! I was in town this August and went to the Fairlawn locations. So the first thing I can tell you is Skyway changed their bun. It's not the same, and it makes a huge difference in my opinion. The bun is bigger, has sesame seeds on it and taste bland. It was like I got a mouthful of bread. The meat tasted good, about the same as I remember, but paired with that bun it was just off. Swensons was great! has that same tasty bun and delicious beef, cheese and sweet onion flavor that remain outstanding! Swensons is the winner by far! Now if you like big, thick juicy $10.00 burgers, you need to go to Whitey's in Bath. I used to live in Bath, and this place was, and remains a top favorite in all of the USA. I wanted a guy who uses a ton of hair product. Came here and asked for a Gelly Boy. Ended up with an amazing burger. It's basically a melty gooey cheesy saucy burger on what seems to be brioche, with tasty thin-patty meat (double), and something that is sort of like McDonald's Big Mac sauce but much better on it. It comes wrapped in foil with an olive on a toothpick stuck in the top. A delicious green olive, no less. These things are dirt cheap (like, under $3) and hearty. Two of them will fill you up, one is perfect for a snack. Wanted a guy from the 50s who uses out-of-date expressions of exclamation. Came here and asked for a Golly Boy. Ended up with an amazing burger. Drinks are interesting, but hypersweet. Their chocolate shakes are not bad at all. Their "Florida" and "California" drinks are mixtures of all your fave sodas. The Florida is actually pretty good although it gives me a headache from too much HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup). They're worth a try, but don't make a habit of it. Turn your lights on for service. Turn them off when you don't need service. The service at Swenson's is 50's style, with young adults and tweens running from car to car to take and deliver orders, and yelling out what the orders are as per company policy. Tip them - it can't be easy to run around and yell the way they have to. I'm sure it's a confidence-builder though. Wanted a pirate guy. Came here and asked for a Gantry Boy. Ended up with an amazing burger. One thing that Swenson's doesn't do well is getting your food out quickly. Sometimes it's speedy as a Gonzalez, but at other times it might be 15 mins for a burger.
