I came here to spend a fun evening with some friends and was very disappointed. My martini tasted awesome, but was a little surprised that I had sucked down three of them and hadn't even felt that I had sucked down one. The service was awful...to the point that we asked the waiter if he was mad at us. He didn't come back hardly at all and we had to flag him down to get refills and to order. I ordered a chicken dish from the prefix menu and when it arrived, I was disappointed to find that the chicken was overcooked...dry and chewy...with little flavor. Had our waiter revisited to ask us how things were, I would have told him, but since he did not, I just ate it and sucked it up. I've been there 2weeks ago and it was really great time. First of all, I never saw this kind of musical show, this musical show style was so unique with great jazz band. Pianist's play was so nice and stood out . And their music arrange was so creative. I really enjoyed. Also food was great and actors are so kind and funny with talented. The food, atmosphere, band, and decor were GREAT! We didn't mind the prices because we expected them however we also expected great service (or at least some sort of service) for these prices. Our server took our order brought us bread & water and it was at this time my husband mentioned he wanted to order a drink when our appetizer was brought to us. We never saw our server after this, no kidding! Our appetizer was dropped off by a runner. It was fantastically prepared. My husband never had the chance to order his drink and our waters went empty by the time our entrees were brought, again by a runner. We asked the runner for more water. We enjoyed our entrees without water or drinks. We sat for a good 5-10 minutes before we stared down our server for our check. He didn't even ask how we were and only asked (in passing) if we needed something. We were speechless when we got our bill with an automatic gratuity just shy of $10. We didn't see this posted anywhere and when asked were told it is customary to add 18% gratuity automatically because of all the tourists. Ok, I have no problem with this and in fact if the service was better we would have left more! I voiced my concerns to the manager and again raved about the food...he apologized and said he'd remove the gratuity off the bill. Meanwhile we asked the bartender how tips are handled and he said they are pooled. We left a tip for this reason only but not $10. I was a bit offended that our final bill was again delivered by a runner after our complaints of the lack of service!!! Fifth time here and each time experience gets worse. Made reservations for eight on a Saturday. Once seated didn't get service for 40 long minutes,no drinks ,no bread, nothing. The staff all appeared frantic,atmosphere hectic. No staff would give us eye contact. The dance floor was quickly reduced to half the small size with additional tables added through out the evening. People dancing were bumping into customers eating and others wanting to watch the dancing were hovering over you as you ate! Food was not worth it. You pay a 15 dollar cover charge to have little dance opportunity unless you like that extreme crowded ,bang into you stuff! I complained to the hostess because I have never been so embarrassed. I brought 6 visitors and spent a lot of money and had the worst restaurant experience of my life! The hostess told me the owner was there and would have him come over, he never did! Look at the reviews of these two yelpers for Swing 46: Anthony V and Robbye M. They are the only ones that come close to explaining this place for what it really is - an overpriced shady dump, that attempts to be some high class jazz and supper club but really is a cash scam. We went there this year during New Years 2013. We enter-- fine you pay a couple bucks to check your coats. Then you pay about 30-40 /person to sit at a table if you want to i guess eat and hear the music. Then when we sat a rude male waiter just placed our menues down and walked on. My wife just wanted an appetizer and maybe dessert- wasn't too hungry. I planned for an entree. When the guy returns he says we have to each order an entree with a very good scowl on his face. We call for the manager and he starts telling us about how they price each customer to get about 80$ out of each one. So we had to order some "extras" or else I guess leave. I mean there are plenty of fancy places that need to obviously keep a certain profit level, but when the food comes and we're served chewy calamari with a cheap marinara (the calamari frozen of course) and a crappy small piece of steak and some other unmemorable bs, you can't help but say to yourself while you're wathcing the music (which is pretty nice) I've been duped. As everyone says, the music is good if you like that time period of music, but the food is ridiculously forgettable, cheaply prepared as if they just need to get you in, serve you some crap and get you out. If you pay good money, you should get a decent meal and great customer service. We didn't, and this is why I state this place is a sham. We won't be going back. This place is just amazing. Went there with my Mum when we were on a girly vacation in New York. We were there on a Friday night and had a light supper and saw the band. Layout was great with a decent sized dance floor and tables around it on 2 levels. The service was friendly and the music was just awesome. Would go back there in a heartbeat!!! read more

What a shame that comfort food has come to mean familiar, boring, safe, corporate chain food--even in the Big (Mott's) Apple (Juice). Who will come to NYC when it's overgrown with Olive Gardens -- right here in Times Square, UGH!, TGIF's, McD's---why bother when you can stay home and see/eat the same things? Well, frankly, I doubt the tourists care or even notice. They like it that way. But what about the natives? Will they have to start commuting to NJ to get a real Italian meal prepared by real Italians? Get off the main streets. Go down the side streets. Look left and right, up and down, for Chrissakes. They are still there, hidden and almost invisible. Places like Swing 46. If you don't support them they will not just become virtually invisible, they will actually disappear. Sometimes a bad thing turns out to be a good thing--especially in my beloved Manhattan. We were recently deeply disappointed when one of our favorite standbys was found to be closed indefinitely for "remodeling". Well, we've seen those signs before--signs of the times. Another old favorite bites the dust after decades of surviving among the Fortune 500's. Probably the last regular finally died off after celebrating his 95th birthday there and they buried their lease and liquor license with him. But, as I said, our misfortune forced us to come out of our comfort zone and resume the hunt... It wasn't long before we walked into Swing 46--a post WWII enclave whose former luster is only faintly reflected in things like the art deco sconces that I would risk prison to pry off the walls and take home with me. The '40's swing jazz coming from way in the back is so good I thought the management had sprung for an exceptional quality Bose sound system to enhance their old 33 1/3 wax disks. But, no, it was the real thing. And it was wonderful, with a dance floor full of casually dressed beboppers. There was a time when a place like this would accept only Ginger Roger and Fred Astair wannabees through its front doors. But, it survives because it changes with the times. And it's more fun this way, anyway. Even though there were leather banquettes lining the walls, we sat at the bar and a very personable bartender made me something with gin, mint, lime and a dash of St. Augustine. His dreadlocks were a nice reggae counterpoint to all the Big Band Era vibe that swirled around him. It works because it shows no one is taking themselves too thematically seriously. We ate at the bar as well. Mr. Dreadlocks was so honest when I asked him how was the pan-fried chicken. He said, "Its chicken. Fried in a pan." I responded, "You know, you're right. I didn't come all the way to NYC from CA to have chicken! Give me that vegan lasagna". He looked pleased, saying it was his favorite. Now, you might ask, how could a dish with no cheese, meat, or layered noodles, served on a bed of pureed celery root presume to call itself lasagna? Good question. The answer is, it does and it should. It's delicious and lands so lightly on the gut late at night. Slept through til morning without once getting up to munch on cherry and lime flavored rolaids. we usually try to avoid the theater district/times square, but we were in the mood to dance (it's surprisingly difficult to find a classy dancing place that's not a club or lounge in manhattan). i was expecting a lot more tourists and and older crowd, but was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the other customers were locals and around our age (late 20's, early 30's). You can tell that there were a lot of regulars too, there were some really good dancers there. We wanted to make an event out of our night, so my bf made reservations (the day of) for 6:30pm on a Friday - they called him back and recommended 7:30pm as the band didn't start until 9:30pm. I would recommend arriving around 8pm because we got there around 7:15 and the place was dead...also we were exhausted by 11:30 because we felt like we were there for a long time. You have to pay an entry fee of $15 per person and if you want to dine and dance, you have to order a la carte. The prix fixe is only for non-dancers and they seat you in the front of the restaurant by the bar. The food was decent, but not amazing and the prices are standard NY prices, $32 for filet mignon. With drinks, entree fee, and dinner...the prices do add up. Don't expect to spend less than $150 for a night out for 2. While the band sets up, they had 2 instructors from a local dance school teach us a few swing dance basics. it was great but difficult to concentrate as some of the other patrons were very rude and loud despite the tutorial being given in the middle of the dance floor. It's also a pretty small dance floor so if you want to participate, you better claim your space quick. The live band was great and really got people off their seat and dancing. Besides the price, I had a great time! We will be back, except maybe just for the dancing :) read more

My friends and I had planned this night for a few weeks. I worked a double at my serving job, so I was late joining them. I walked in, not knowing of any protocol. I walk past the bar and into the room where the band is playing and the dancing is happening. I was grabbed hard on the shoulder by a blonde woman and she turned my shoulder so hard that it turned me around. She asked me if she could help me and I said yes those are my friends over there and that we had a table. She said "hmmm where?" As if I were lying to her. I pointed at them and described what one of them was wearing and she proceeded to tell me about a cover charge and that I was wrong for walking in. I told her she was being extremely abrasive. It was not what I wanted to walk into after a 10 hour shift on my feet. She then kind of apologized but not really. She said she's normally at the door collecting the cover charge. I told her clearly she wasn't when I walked in and it wasn't my problem. When I finally sat down it took five to ten minutes for the bartender/server to come over to me so I could order a drink and catch up to my friends. The drink was delicious and the atmosphere of the band and the dancing was fabulous. Then another worked came up to me harassing me about the damn cover charge. And I told him to put it on the tab. I was in the establishment maybe 45 minutes before it closed and I still had to pay the cover I wasn't even aware of. Great atmosphere and I had a blast with my friends and the band and the singer were amazing. But the staff is horrendous. That blonde woman who was supposed to be at the door should be fired for physically assaulting me. read more

i didn't try the food here, but the music was great! i came here on a monday, and saw the harlem renaissance orchestra. i'm biased because i love jazz and swing, but i brought my boyfriend and he had a great time too! during intermission, they have a dance instructor teach audience members how to bust a move. on this particular night, evita taught us the charleston. overall, i had a really fun time, and it was refreshing to do something different from the normal movie/dinner/bar/club routine. read more

To be honest, the Jazz was pretty good and something that I wouldn't necessarily have minded paying for. That said, when you go to the door and say "no" to dancing for 20 dollars and then ask indicating that we wanted free seating if it was available to which the front person responded "20 dollar minimum on drinks" and we could get a table.. I expect to spend a decent amount of money on drinks to make up for the charge. It's very similar to the way that Showmanns, a great jazz bar up in Harlem does it, and by the quality of the place it felt appropriate. An awkward screen on the side, a mostly empty dance floor and lots of cover songs that didn't feel too authentic definitely left it as a distant third behind showmanns and bird land for my favorite spots in the city. That being said, the musicians were good and people did get going for some of the songs, mostly blocking the screen and leaving me content with paying for pricey drinks. Until the end that is. Sure enough, when the bill came out it had an extra 75$ in cover charges, which to make matters MUCH WORSE, the employee in the front started yelling at us that we were lying about what we thought he had said in the front. Frankly, I'm shocked if he's still employed there, and as I live in the neighborhood, will be stopping by, to check if he's spouting the same nonsense deals. The manager, Michelle, tried to give us a card at the end for "free" entrances next time but there will be no next time. And I'll make a strong case why there shouldn't be for any of my other friends who like to frequent ny jazz bars. Evidently, I am not the only one with this mentality, as the place was barely 1/3 full on a Saturday night at midnight and fairly obviously paid dancers were going on the floor to try and up the energy of the room. IF it had been an honest establishment, I probably would have paid the cover and left mildly happy with the experience. But being lied to and having a worker yell at you that you're lying is pretty shoddy business. My girlfriend surprised me with a murder mystery diner at this place. It was mostly amusing, I had an idea who the murderer was before it started and I knew who it was after the victim died, so pretty disappointing. The drinks were pretty weak and at city prices, did not make them worth it. I also felt they put too little in my girlfriends martini so there goes more wasted money. I wish I could say at least the food was good, but it was boring and tasteless. The mashed youta looked instant and the vegetables were obviously frozen (the bright color you see when you buy frozen vegetables) and even if they weren't they tasted it. I got their angus stake, which was unseasoned and pretty tough for medium rare. I didn't bother trying my girlfriends chicken, but from the fact she didn't care to finish it, I doubt it was good. For dessert I swear to god I was eating a snack pack. It was a chocolate pudding sprinkled with pecans and powdered sugar. I mean come on. The one thing I can definitely commend this place for is their staff members. They all were extremely polite and courteous. I have never left a review before. I downloaded Yelp for the first time now because I feel I need to speak out for the way I was treated tonight. I went to see a friend's concert at Swing 46. My friends and I happily paid the $15 cover charge and sat down to see the band. I spent on a soup, an appetizer, and 3 drinks. My friends also had drinks and food. At the end of the night we received our check and I split it among the 4 of us, writing down how much was to be taken from each person's card which included a 25% tip from each of us. After taking our cards our waited came back and told us that their card machine was broken and they were only able to take one card. I knew that the card machine was not broken if they could take one card and I knew that they most likely just did not want to split the bill. Being a server myself I understand that it can be time consuming to process each card in a split bill. After he walked away I offered to pay for my friends up front if they were all able to venmo me or pay cash to make it easier. Unfortunately that wasn't an option for everyone and I just wanted the bill split among the 4 of us. I went to the front and asked if they would split the bill and apologized and recognized the inconvenience of having to split the bill. The man I talked with (a different man from our server) took the bill from my hands and began to tell me how I was waisting his time. He angrily explained how back in the day this was never a thing and how absolutely ridiculous it was that we could ask such a thing. "One table one bill." I told him I would help in any way possible to make it easier and offered to hand the 4 cards to him one by one and read what was to be taken out of each. He said "You bet you're going to stay here and do that. You're not going anywhere until this is done." He was shaking his head and rambling on rudely and angrily as he was taking the cards and questioning if we were paying enough. I had my calculator out on my phone when he finished and told him I could quickly add it together to show that we had paid full and tipped 25% because I didn't want him to think we were trying to pull a fast one or anything. He then said "You've already waisted 15 minutes of my time get out." Meanwhile he was just standing around. I don't know if the fact that I continued to thank him for dealing with the matter only fueled him to continue harassing me or what, but I have never been treated so poorly at any restaurant I've been to. I am a very composed and respectful person, and although my table caused the inconvenience of having to split the bill, I would have appreciated if he had said something along the lines of... we will split the bill for you this time but just so you know for future reference you are not able to split the bill here... or it would have at least been better had he spoken his piece in one statement rather than driving it in with one rude comment after the other. Or kindly refuse to split the bill. Just don't continually insult me!! As a server I deal with a lot of "rude" people and issues, but I deal with it with respect even if some don't think they deserve it because that is what I'm getting paid to do!! I am upset with the disrespect I received at Swing 46 and will only go back again if it is to support a friend's performance. read more

I went Thursday 1/3/13, it was a random night out with my boyfriend. It turned out to be amazing. We had their $25 dollar prefix menu,which I recommend since there food can be a bit pricey. The mozzarella appetizer is very delicious. For entree I had the shrimp rigatoni, which was very good as well. Lastly, the dessert was a brownie it was good. I have to say the best part of the night was the dancing and the live band. I have always wanted to experience a swing club. We also had swing lessons. It was awesome. There is a $12 cover charge to sit near the band, however I think it's worth it because the atmosphere and the vibe is the whole reason to come to this restaurant. We were visiting for an over-night trip and looking for a 5 star place to eat. Everyone suggested restaurant row... Hell's Kitchen area. We decided on Swing 46. The food gets 5 stars. I had the seared scallops, my daughters had the filet and the mussels. Everything was as expected. The service was 2 star. We waited entirely too long for the waitress to return and service our table and to make it worse, the establishment adds in the gratuity automatically! Very disappointed with that. Bad management! I made a reservation for a table 2 weeks before my wife's birthday. I arrived on time at 10pm and learned that tables are reserved for people eating dinner. They acknowledged my reservation but refused to seat me unless I ordered dinner. The place was half empty. Now I know why! These are the kind of practices that give New York a bad name. I work in this area and there's really not too many places around that you can find delicious steaks at a good price. We were SO surprised by this place! We didn't catch any live music, but the food spoke for itself. The prix fix menu is perfect and was just enough for both of us to walk out of their feeling satisfied. So my friends and I drove up from Philadelphia just to come to this place. The site itself is beautiful, very reminiscent of the 1920's, film noir type setting. The band was great, and although the I did not dine, the food looked fantastic. The dance floor is not very big so if you go to dance just be aware it might be a tight space. I really enjoyed the place EXCEPT FOR ONE HUGE LETDOWN. The bar that night had two of the worst bartenders I have ever dealt with. My friends and I sat at the bar several times and were completely ignored by both bartenders. They would make eye contact and literally turn away to attend to someone else. Twice my husband was sitting at the bar and the bar tender ignored him but as soon as someone walked in the door , clearly dressed showing they were well off, they would immediately attend to them. (DIRECTLY NEXT TO MY SPOUSE) Even when my husband simply went to close his tab he was blatantly ignored by one bartender who kept walking up to where he was sitting and cleaning the bar but refused to acknowledge him. It almost felt like they were profiling the guests. Or simply poorly trained. And the funny thing was I don't even think the bar was super crowded! I have worked many events as a bartender and know a few people in the business. I know on average for an event that one bartender is usually directly responsible for about 65 ppl. Which means with two bartenders there every customer should be attended to fairly quickly and respectfully. It really angered and discouraged everyone in my party from ordering drinks at all. My advice to the owner would be to pay attention to your bartenders. They may drive your crowds away. read more

The band, The George Gee Orchestra, was great, fantastic even. The place was packed. I had dinner and three cocktails. The staff was great! The food was great! The orchestra was great! Drinks? Sucked. Three drinks, and they were all watered down. My suggestion is BYOB or come with a buzz, otherwise, you are paying a high price for watered down drink. Management and customer service horrible. I was seated at an end table in the middle of a wedding party. It took 20 minutes before someone attended to my empty plate and another 15 minutes before my dessert came. Add another 15 for the check - after I flagged down the waiter. When I asked to speak to the manager, I explained I am not a tourist I live around the corner and told him what happened. He just shrugged his shoulders! Music was ok, waiter was ok. And that's where the ok ends. Drinks - weak and over priced for what was basically soda. Food - lacking in fresh made items, the calamari was packaged, frozen calamari. The risotto had to have been from a box, the vegetables seemed to been frozen as well. The salmon was pretty good, hangar steak just ok. The cheesecake strawberry sauce was cloyingly sweet and from a package too. Our order was inaccurate and our food arrived at much different times. Drinks had to be requested multiple times before we received them. If you're into swig music and dancing then this is a good place. Went there for dinner only after the theater. And I have to tell you it truly was one of the worse restaurants I have ever eaten in my 60 yr life. My wife and I both ordered Cesar salads that literally were dry due from lack of dressing. So we asked for more dressing 10 mins later it arrived with some bread. btw the bread was a joke In would expect bread like that in a prison. next came out our entres that were pathetic in size. my wife ordered the rack of ribs. if you call a rack 3 ribs which were drizzled with some srt of bottled marinade. She ate one. I ordered sesame crusted salmon which had no sesame just teriaki sauce on it. it was literally 2x4 inches in size. A portion for a 3 yr old. Then brownies with whip cream for dessert. That was okay. Just okay. 110.00 later which I never worry about price as long as the food is good and I don`t walk out starving. Well needless to say the food sucked and I had a bite when I got home. I really don`t know how that place survives maybe on there show which I was listening to which was far from good. Food was fantastic. The bands are always top notch. However, Swing 46 needs to make some major changes regarding dancing! I have been here 3 times now and the dancers are treated like a tourist attraction. You walk in and once the doorman/woman finds out you are a dancer she/he gives you the stink eye because they know you will only be paying the cover charge and not purchasing many drinks or food. They require you to check in coats, bags, umbrellas and anything you brought. You then have a very small (even for NYC) dance floor to navigate and you are constantly being told to get out of the way. If you are waiting on the side for the next song to find a partner to dance with, you are told you are blocking the view of dinner guests trying to watch the dancing. All 3 times I went, I felt like I shouldn't be there and I was just a necessary attraction to draw more tourism. I am not writing this review to discourage people from going to Swing 46: The food was fantastic and the bands truly are wonderful. But, as a dancer, I would absolutely not make this a regular hangout and won't be persuaded to come back until they treat the dancers better. read more

[Wedding & Events] This review is long overdue but I am happy to be writing it now! If you want an NYC wedding Swing 46 is an amazing choice! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the venue, the staff, the pricing and John's (the owner) commitment to helping my husband and I throw the wedding we always wanted. The venue holds about 150, there are a variety of bands to choose from, we designed our own specialty cocktails, there was never any wait at the bar, our family and friends also told us it was the best wedding food they ever had. The pricing structure was *very* affordable, you should do yourself the favor of checking out this new york gem! John is quick to respond, work with your budget and make you feel special. I also booked a corporate holiday party there that is still talked about 4 years later as the most fun venue at our company. I also head to Swing 46 for pre-theater dinner (they have a great prix fixe) in a fun but not overly crazy/crowded place as well as times square/pre-theater happy hour! LOVE this venue and the staff.
