In short: THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE! OK, here it goes: I used to live in NYC in the 90's and 2000's and moved away. But NYC is the only place I can ever live in. I was looking for a venue in NYC to have my 40th BDay Party. There were going to be about 50 guests from ALL AROUND THE WORLD to show them my favorite city, and I wanted everybody to be relaxed, silly, and have a blast. Of course, I have a fare share of my NYCers friends. I was looking for something like pop-music club scene and wanted that feeling. But not many venues offered that. I stumbled upon Swing 46 and saw live music. I was skeptical at first because it's a Jazz and Swing club, and I am totally NOT into Jazz (downer, not an upper in my book). Also, I like swing, but have never been to a swing place, nor do I know how to dance swing. And swing is so far from clubbing and pop music. But what attracted me to the venue was the music on the web page. It was kind of cool and whimsical. I thought I'd give it a try. AND, OH BOY, DID THEY DELIVER! I dealt with John, who was very quick in replying. We agreed on the details and I sent a down payment about 3 months before the event. We didn't stay in touch in the meantime. But then, as the date was approaching, John wanted to make sure everything goes as planned. The guy went so much out of his way to accommodate us! First of all, he let us put a silly Step-and-Repeat and "red carpet" in front of his restaurant, so we can take pictures and be silly. The thing was up all night and random tourists took pictures in front of it He even helped me set it up - a hands-on dude. He want so out of his way to make this the best night of my life. And it truly was. I am so appreciative John booked a live band that played amazing music, from swing to rock to pop. There was not a moment when the dance floor was empty - that's how good they were. I was blown away! EVERYBODY DANCED! Including my 66-year old mom who has problems with feet! Although I didn't get to eat much, my guests say the food was excellent. I don't remember. hahahahahaha. All in all, this is the night that will forever stay in my mind as one of the best night of my life, in the best city in the world, with the people who mean the most to me. Went for a little bday swing dance party action, and this place served up. Smack in the middle of fleet week - we made a reservation for 4, table was ready perfectly on time...this was an 8:30 res and there was a dance lesson and then a band playing with more dancing throughout. We had to wait a smidge longer than I would've wanted for our drinks and such - but we ended up ordering drinks, app and entrees at once - all which came out timely, so it didn't matter. If your seated in the dance area, which we were (the first table) people are going to be dancing right next to you, its somewhat tight (like everything in NYC.). Drinks and all the food was great. Cooked perfectly, really good. They have menus online so you can see whats there and the prices. I thought the prices were good considering the locations. Steak dinner about $34 or so... The Crescent City Maulers were playing, we are familiar with them to begin with - so we knew what to expect - music was great. As for the dancing, so we knew they DO lessons there, but wasnt aware there would be one - it was cool! Okay, so there is a legit instructor and he basically invites you out to the dancefloor (which is probably only about the size of 20x15, intimate) shows you super basic steps to swing and small intro, its a cool vibe, no one is like watching you if you don't know, half the people didnt know what they were doing so that was cool. I came here on a Tuesday night with my fiancée. I wanted to check out if this place would be a good venue for a networking event I'm planning. I went at 7pm and the place was empty. That was a bit worrying but people filled in quickly at 8pm. It seems like most people who came were regulars and they all knew the live band would begin at 8:30pm. We ordered the almond crusted calamari, swing salad, beet salad and pork chops. I wouldn't order the calamari again, I think they forgot the "almond crusted" part because it tasted like regular fried calamari to me. The beet salad was normal and the pork chops were ok. It was slightly overcooked. Our bill ended up being $150 for 2 drinks, 3 appetizers, 1 entrée and 2 entrance fees. It's $15 per person for the music. Some would say it's a bit hefty but it's like any other club that charges a cover. Also, most people stay several hours to eat and dance so the turnover is really low compared to places that have live music. There was also a free group swing lesson for about 30 minutes so I think that was already worth the $15 cover charge. I'd definitely be back. This place is soooo fun! read more

I have walked by this place hundreds of times and never gone in, until this past week. I wanted a scotch (apparently hard to find in HK) so I went in, I was the only customer around 6:30 on a Wednesday. The inside is awesome, I want to come back when they have music and dancers so we can eat and have a great night. The bartender (David I believe) was great and nice as well. read more

I'd give zero stars if I could. We're happy we dodged the bullet and didn't give them a dime of our money. Made a reservation a month in advance to celebrate our anniversary. Figured it would be something fun and different to do. Unfortunately we were 9... nine minutes late. We thought the person who greeted us what just joking around when he said we lost our reservation. Literally the place was empty and we were only 9 minutes late. Most places give you a 15 minute window. When we realized he was serious that we lost our reservation we said we'd sit at the bar (which was empty too) he pointed to two chairs and said you can sit here only and disappeared. Never have we ever been treated so rudely by a power tripping jerk - especially in a place that was pretty much empty. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. I went to Swing 46 for a pre-theater dinner with friends, and because we sat outside, we missed out on any of the live music and dancing. The $30 prix fixe menu offered an appetizer, entrée and dessert with decent variety. I ordered the Caesar salad, Hangar Steak, and Warm Chocolate Brownie, all of which was very good. We also happened to partake of the buy one get one happy hour...champagne is part of the happy hour, so we went for the bubbly. Service was decent and friendly, though I think the busboy was new...he kept trying to bring bread to tables that either already had bread or were on the dessert course. read more

This place is always on my must-do list when I'm in the city. It's centrally-located close enough to the tourist-swarmed streets, but just off the radar enough to give you a break away from the madness. With talented musicians, cozy atmosphere and good food, what's not to love? Amazing live jazz bands set the mood while you enjoy drinks and bites (mostly appetizer dishes), which I think are reasonably-priced. I've never paid a cover, probably because I always consume, and when I've gone late-night it's never too busy. The service is also friendly. I especially love that you see people of all ages enjoying their time there - from young groups of friends celebrating a birthday to elderly couples romantically reliving their youth through swing dancing. I feel super bad for the staff at this establishment as they seem to be heavily underpaid. Went there for a few drinks (no food). We left a $dollar tip per drink which came out to be 15% of the total. The waiter asked us if something was wrong with her service as the minimum suggested tip is 18% which in this case was a $2 dollar difference. We felt bad and gave her what she asked for. We are from New York City and never experienced anything like that. It's sad if restaurants like that establish a culture where staff feels they have to fight for an extra two bucks of something that is meant to be purely discretionary. read more

We went here because the original place we had planned to go to was a 45 min wait. It was a pleasant surprise. I can not rate the food because I just had coffee and an apple pie (which were good), but the entertainment was great. I enjoyed some old school music and got to watch a crowd of people letting loose and dancing for the joy of it. Come for the Music, order the Salmon! I ate here twice while in New York City because some friends are regular dancers there and I had the Salmon twice. It's fantastic. The menu is pretty much standard fare and others in my party didn't rave about their items, but they didn't complain. I'm raving about the salmon. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, I can confidently say it's some of the best prepared I've had in a while. The music and atmosphere is fantastic and harkens back to the 40's which is exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend stopping for dinner if you find yourself in NYC. It's not hard to find and an easy Cab/Lyft/Uber ride from anywhere. It's a quick walk from Times Square and there are lots of great things to see along the way. read more

I was sitting with people who ordered dinner ( overpriced and no bread given) which looked fine .. but I was pressured by the unfriendly waiter to order. I ordered French fries ( 8.00 on the menu but was charged 10.00) which were greasy. The dancing was fun and the music was fun though. So if you are going for that it's a win win. read more

Came here for my mothers birthday on a Tuesday night for the George Gee Band. There was a total of 14 people and we were seated at the dining room floor area. Music was wonderful and the dancing atmosphere continued throughout the whole night. There is a 30min band intermission during which time there are welcomed dance lessons on the dance floor for anyone interested! Overall great spot, great atmosphere, caring staff. Only negative thing I can say is that the food is a bit pricey. read more

We were there for 3 hours, the Saturday night dinner session from 5:30 to 8:30. An 18% gratuity was added to our bill last night. I checked the menu just now and they do say this upfront. That is fine, however our server was gone for around an hour and half. Really, it was an hour and a half. He didn't feel the need to check in on us all that time? Obviously he knew he gets this gratuity so can do whatever he wants. So we got the prefixe 3 course. Salad and chicken was delicious. After two courses and a round of drinks, we sat with empty glasses and no food on the table. There was a nice band though to watch and the dance floor was full. Maybe it's our fault for not dancing! Still there was a feeling that they didn't care. We probably would have gotten a second round of drinks and the waiter would have been tipped more! My meal here was decent and the atmosphere seemed pretty nice too. I can't bring myself to give it a better rating though because as we were finishing our meal, hundreds of fruit flys started joining us for dinner. I would not recommend this restaurant for dinner, but it would probably still be a nice joint for live music and drinks. With it being on restaurant row, there are many other choices where you will hopefully have less unwanted visitors at your table. We went on Valentines Day. We won't be back. Dinner was ok - kinda pricey. Band was great Because it was Valentines Day the bill was about $400. We had drinks at the bar. Ran the tab for drinks - no problem. Had dinner, danced and tried to pay the tab and the card was denied. Tried again and denied again. I explained that the card (a debit card) had a balance over $5000. I asked what we should do. Manager became belligerent and called the cops and said we were leaving without paying (not true). I showed him the balance on my phone. We called the credit card company. It turned out that the manager was running it wrong. Went through and they got paid. I love that it is a throwback to an era when people would enjoy a full night out of dinner and dancing... the music is fabulous! It probably varies night to night but I had plenty of people to dance with. Yes you need a reservation for a table and yes of course there is a cover charge but they have to pay a dozen musicians! We came to NY for the week and knew that things would be expensive and that we would run into some rude service. This place tops everything!! The food was OK, nothing spectacular, but the guy that was our waiter was not friendly at all and if we asked a question he got irritated. We quickly noticed that if another customer spoke Spanish he was much nicer to them. We ordered drinks we never got, which was fine as it would have made the $300.00 bill that much worse , yes $300.00 and it was NOT worth $300.00. The music was good and reservations are necessary. If you want an old school New York experience, this is it! Swing Jazz is a great backdrop to everything New York. The singer was marvelous and so was the band. Something special. This was an impeccable experience at under $ 200 with drinks, full dinner, live 1st class band, swing dancing lessons, and of course dancing the night away in the middle of restaurant row. Service was flawless and warm from a team of gorgeous Broadway performers between shows. The cooking though not original was delicious Americana steak and seafood style particularly the scallops wrapped in bacon. The band was hot and fun. Of course you have to like 40's and 50's swing music and we do so this was a night to remember. read more

The free one is only for the second round which was misleading and should've told us from the beginning. Wine was terrible. Update: paid our bill without the tip. Waiter chased us and SNATCHED my phone out of my hands and ran back into the restaurant . We called the cops and his boss told him to give it back. He threatened us while giving the phone back. I've been to this place twice to support a friend with dancing. Had poor service; napkins and silverware were placed on our table while the server cleared the other table. Our table wasn't cleared after our meal and we were treated with poor hospitality. Plenty of Jazz clubs in the East Village. I would never return here. I do not recommend this place. read more

Visited on a Saturday night with a large group of friends. Live music was lovely. The free dance lesson at 9 pm was okay (it was "free" after all). The food was subpar for the prices. The main reason for the poor review was that the waitstaff was very rude. Our waiter disappeared for quite awhile after giving us a menu. We flagged down another waiter and asked if he could send our waiter over. "Why?!" He angrily responded. "Because we'd like to order....?" We should have walked out then. Later, when I asked for the check out waiter lashed out at me saying "Don't you people get that I have other things to do?!" As the restaurant AUTOMATICALLY adds an 18% tip to your check, I unfortunately had to leave a tip for this rude service. Overall, a very expensive night out for subpar food, rude service and some love music. BEWARE THE TIP IS AUTOMATICALLY ON YOUR BILL! THE MUSIC!!! Came on a Wednesday: 20 Musician LIVE Big Band (Stan Rubin Orquestra). It was like being sent back in time to big band time with Sinatra's classics. EXCELLENT MUSICALLY. Service was courteous. Bread and water came a little late. Bread can be improved to a bakery type bread. The meats were tender. Try the pork was massive and well done, highly recommended with its prune sauce: Cooked thoroughly (as pork must be) without making it chewy or tough. Portions are decently sized. Would have liked to put NEGATIVE Stars HORRIBLE NEVER PLANNING ON GOING AGAIN My husband and I visited Swing 46 a few times before COVID. We enjoyed the dining, lessons and dancing. On April 30, 2022, we were looking forward to our first time back. We were SHOCKED - Absolutely HORRIBLE owner/management. We arrived looking forward to a night of great music and dancing - 7 of us in total. We ended up walking into a majorly toxic environment. The owner - John - berated our friend (who had planned the get together) multiple times. None of their staff seemed to be on the same page regarding cover charge amount/min order, seating, etc. The owner and his henchman (arrogant waiter-name escapes me) spouted different things. After finally being seated we were ignored for the rest of the evening. The rest of the staff seemed to walk on eggshells. One waiter (Joseph) deserves a shoutout - he was kind, courteous and respectful. We all felt terrible about leaving him with such a dysfunctional/toxic management team. We came in as paying customers looking forward to dinner and dancing. We ended up witnessing toxic insanity instead. I don't know if John was 'on something' but it was unbelievable. As we were leaving, he continued to berate our friend and when we expressed that his attitude was disgraceful, he went BEZERK. He was cursing and shouting like a lunatic. Maybe he thinks the tourist crowd like this garbage BUT we are NOT tourist. Not only will we NEVER go there again but we would caution anyone even thinking about it. The owner is arrogant, abusive and TOXIC - the food is insanely overpriced, the drinks so-so and the dance floor is miniscule. I feel for the bands and Joseph. OWNER IS BELLIGERENT and extremely disrespectful to his employees and customers! My husband, Niece and I met for dinner in midtown and came across this restaurant amongst the many restaurants in the area. The place looked quaint and cozy. We like Jazz music and the way the place looked so decided to give it a try. We were greeted and seated by a very nice male host. But literally no more than 10 mins after being seated the owner began to berate the male host and although the employee complied with the owners demands the owner would not stop yelling at him. We all felt uncomfortable and truly embarrassed as well as sad for the employee. We were ready to leave when we were greeted by our server who was very nice. So we decided to stay and give the food a try. Our server Paul was great. He was attentive and made the experience pleasurable. He also made good recommendations, explained the prefix menu 2 for 1 drink options. For appetizers we had, the portobello salad with Goat, coconut shrimp in a scampi type sauce and mussels in a tomato sauce. All these dishes were delicious. For entrees we had, filet mignon with veggies and roasted potatoes, scallops with mashed potatoes, and the orchetta pasta with sausage and spinach in a pesto sauce. The beef was not good and the scallops with bacon were over cooked. The orchetta pasta dish was the only good dish. Throughout the night you could tell the staff was on pins and needles. I am sure the owners behavior affected them somehow. So as we were leaving, I felt compelled to speak directly with the owner. I wanted him to know how he made us feel earlier in the evening. And to suggest that he take his employees aside if he felt they did something wrong and not to berate them in front of customers. Well, this guy is a real JERK! Instead of acknowledging his wrong doing he proceeded to tell me to go inside get his business card and email him my complaint. He did it in a very condescending way. When I told him I did have his card he proceeded to repeat himself and made a sho-sho hand jester. I turned around and started to walk away. My husband noticed what the owner had done. So he told him not to disrespect me. The owner lost it and started to threaten us along with the use of lots of profanity. My husband told him were to go to put it mildly. Needless to say. We will never give this JERK one penny again. His staff is lovely and I feel a lot of empathy for them. I hope they look for a different job because no one deserves to be treated like this owner treats people. And by the way, the food is overpriced. Could have gotten a better meal at another restaurant like Barbetta right down the block. read more

I never write reviews... but the meal I ordered from here (seafood risotto ) was inedible , the coconut shrimp appetizer was ok but the dish was cold and the shrimp were tough and over cooked ... the steak my husband ordered was ok, service was ok. We were not told that the $15 up charge for listening to the band was per person.. ( not a deal breaker, but it should be explained.
