Feb 4, 2021 dinner for 2: Gemischster Blattsalat and Linsensuppe were delightful especially the lentil soup. We ordered seconds it was so good: piping hot and perfectly seasoned and hearty, as good a lentil dish I've ever had. Main course: Gregriltes Lachsfilet which came out more well done than the medium rare we ordered but the bed of pappardelle & arugula was cooked perfectly al dente with a magical crispness. Wiener schnitzel was the weakest dish: the meat was a little too dry and the batter uninspired. Satisfying nonetheless. A half liter of Benediktiner helles lager washed it all down. I've only been here for dessert, but it was a perfect place to end the evening. It was nice to have a little gap between dinner and dessert. The space is very intimate and cute, and it just feels like a chalet in Switzerland. The chocolate dessert fondues are smooth, and the fruit is fresh. Swiss Chalet is one of those restaurants that has always been full as long as I remember because it's unique to town being fondue and it's right in the walkers part of the village but if you are there in ski season I'd skip it. Its cute, too cute by half really and the food is ok, just-ok really. We enjoy fondue at home and in our opinion the Swiss Chalet's food was very underwhelming and the experience was very overbearing. One issue was that the wait staff was suspiciously vague about how much to order for the number of people we had and we definitely ended up over-ordering therefore wasting food and overpaying. Also it was overly crowded, deafeningly loud and you expected the Swiss Miss to pop out at any moment and yodel for the crowd that is hovering around the door and bar waiting for a table. The bottom line is I left feeling like I wasted one of the few dinners I had in Vail at a place that was a predictable mistake.If you are there in the summer all the restaurants that are too busy and too expensive in the winter become your playground but in high season dig a little deeper and find a gem elsewhere. read more

I was so looking forward to a fondue experience...however, I left feeling very underwhelmed. I did not want to feel this way. I love fondue! We are locals and understood we were walking into an off season experience. Overall, we felt the food was lacking flavor and the staff was inattentive. We are big beef tartare fans, and though this portion was huge, it lacked good flavor or contrasts. We ordered the oil based fondue and got a very quick rundown of the cooking process but no explanation of the three sauces. This fondue choice lacked flavor. We also ordered the Alplen cheese fondue. This was tasty, but a basket full of bread cubes was overwhelming. The space itself and atmosphere are charming. I would love to see it full of patrons and charming and attentive/knowledgeable staff. We will give it another shot but with a larger group. I'd go here for the experience and not necessarily the food. read more

Beautiful Swiss Alp ambience, good but not excellent food. Excellent service though the staff appeared overwhelmed and not too happy. However the experience was poor because of the lack of ventilation for all those fondue pots, grilled meats and boiling oils. The air was oppressive, and vastly worse than the usual fondue place. If you go prepare for that, wear old clothes you can wash. If you have asthma or other respiratory problem avoid it. read more

We came on a relatively slow late-spring evening. We had the Sommer Salat, the cheese fondue as an entree, and the chocolate fondue for dessert. The food was all excellent, the portions were very reasonable, the service helpful and attentive, and the price very reasonable (being in Vail). The patio seating was also great, but it got chilly when the sun went down. It would be better if they had heaters, but we were luckily just finishing up when the temperature dipped. read more

It is like Heaven! The draft Weiss bier was divine, crisp, and cool. I ordered the Cordon blue with vegetables spätzle, and mushroom gravy. What a joy to eat such hardy delicious food that will take you back to experiences in Bavaria eating these dishes, however the textures, flavor combinations, and cook made this the best dish since had in Vail! The staff is very friendly and makes the experience a pleasure, from the hostess, to the table waiters, to the bar staff. As I sat at my window table while the sun poured in to warm the interior woods PJ (my favorite waiter now) brought me apfelstrudel a la mode and I transported back to my apfelstrudel making lesson at the Schonnbrunn Palace. Okay food. The portions for the raclettes are quite small. You will probably need to order a few sides to dip as well. This concept, however, seems to be an easy way to over-charge customers to cook their own food. Do not recommend the chocolate brownie with ice cream; it was dry and the brownie I had on the plane here was more flavorful. Otherwise my family and I had a fun time, but my brother was not satisfied and will be getting a pizza on the way home. Also, the bottled flat water was $9; the same bottle at Matsuhisa (which was superb as always - highly recommend) was $4. The veggies were uninspired as were the other dishes. The vegetable dish was some squash, tomatoes (NOT a veggie), one quarter inch slice of each pepper, and mushrooms - not very much of any either. What this restaurant lacked in flavorful food they made up for in costumes for the waitresses. Service was great; our waiter was really helpful. If you must go, I recommend getting a reservation during the holiday season. read more

Pretty fun place with a good atmosphere. It is kid friendly and the service was excellent. Staff was highly attentive and friendly. The wine list is excellent with a ton of choices for all budgets. You could call the attire of the staff either authentic or kind of silly, nit sure which. The food was good, not great. Portions decent size. My only real complaint was the cost, but I guess that is expected in Vail. We ordered pretty sparingly and it was still over $200 for 2 adults and 2 kids (alcohol included). All in all, if you don't mind dropping pretty big $ then you will enjoy it. read more

I used to eat at the Swiss Chalet about five or six times a year. I own a home in Vail that I don't rent so I come several times a year whenever I want. We would eat at least once per ski trip and once in summer. Their fondue is good and the ambience is simply charming. We would order salads and sometimes escargot before. We would get at least one meat to go with the fondue. They used to have lamb and venison in addition to beef and sausage and chicken. They got rid of the lamb and venison. No one seems to know why. We would often get chocolate fondue for dessert but after all that cheese and bread we frequently skipped the chocolate. I get it. It's the Sonnenalp, a "luxury" property and they only want the luxe, foreign (mostly Mexican) tourists. But they have really priced themselves out. The fondue seems to have nearly doubled in price in the last year to $48 for what seems like about 10oz-12oz of Emmental/Gruyere with some Kierschwasser and wine. Their wine list is exhaustive - Wine Spectator worthy - but we could always find a nice bottle of wine in the $45-$55 range to go with the fondue, usually an Oregon Pinot. Not any more. They got rid of everything on the lower end. I can't justify a $300-$1,000-$3,500 bottle of Nuit St George with a bucket of melted cheese. They have also added a "culinary surcharge" to every dinner check. This includes all their other properties like the Bully Ranch. Although this 2% "tax" doesn't appear anywhere on the menu it does appear on your bill. Unlike a tip it's not discretionary. If your food takes forever, is over cooked; under cooked, has hair in it (all issues I have experienced at the Sonnenalp) the 2% will still be added. They say it all goes to the kitchen staff. I kind of doubt it. Apparently they didn't used to pay their kitchen staff the way everyone else pays their kitchen staff. When I owned a restaurant I paid my staff with the proceeds of my sales. If I needed to pay them more I either cut back somewhere else (like maybe the inventory in my wine cellar) or I raised my prices. The Sonnenalp just sneaks an additional 2% vig onto your bill hoping you won't notice or you won't mind. The Swiss Chalet is a good restaurant but it's not a great restaurant. I make better fondue at home; they seem to use a roux so it's always a little "floury". I don't. I slowly infuse the cheese straight into the wine with a little corn starch. Two people having two salads, one cheese fondue, one glass of white wine, one bottle of red wine =/= $200+. We're out. read more

Wow what a treat. My dad is German so I'm picky about European food. We sat at the bar, my son had the kids schnitzel. It was big, moist and came with giant waffle fries. It was a really big kids meal. I had the cheese fondue and the assorted salads. I was in heaven! The only complaint is I wish the fondue lasted longer, it seemed to go so quick. Next time I'll order the dinner portion it was so tasty. The salads were excellent too, just the right amount of tasty dressings and very assorted. I noticed my neighbors ordered some other dishes off the menu and they looked so tasty too. I wish I could have eaten more. We were full and leaving the next day so I couldn't come back this visit but I'll be sure to stop in a lot during my next vail visit. read more

This used to be one of my favourite restaurants in Vail because of their fondue (I'm a vegetarian) however, things have changed and even though the staff is fantastic and super professional, the food isn't what it used to be. Our latest experience on July 8th, 2018, was quite a letdown. We (my sister and me) ordered an arugula salad with apple, pine nuts, goat cheese and champagne dressing, well... it was extremely acidic, there was so much vinegar that it "killed" our taste buds and was beyond overdressed; the apples weren't even caramelized, the goat cheese was just a couple of crumbs that didn't even deserve to be mentioned in the description, and the pine nuts were burned! We asked for some bread to go with it and unfortunately it was dry -perhaps old- and burned, as well! Then we shared the Alpler Fondue (a speciality of the house) that was not bad but it wasn't as good as it used to be, and on top of it all, the créme brullé was super cold, had a horrible grainy texture and the sugar on top was soft and gooey, like they had brulléed it and put it in the fridge 3 hours before! Sorry to say that a meal for two at a little over $100 dollars -just for food, no alcohol - ought to be very good. This is the second time that The Swiss Chalet has fallen short of its reputation, but we went back because everyone has a bad day, however, I don't think that I will be returning anytime soon unless the chef gets his/her act together. The actual cheese fondue was not very good or authentic (neither was the chocolate fondue but I do not recommend eating both anyways). We come here once a year for the last 5 years. The service was on sport and the atmosphere was just ok. We tried something new for us as we usually go there for he fondue. We had both different meals and hey were both to soggy (butter/oil). We will try again next year. read more

This is a letter of complaint from a Canadian vacationing in Vail: I once came here with my relatives and wanted to eat at so called 'Swiss Chalet.' I dressed up in my casual clothes expecting this place to be quick. Well this place was NOTHING like I expected. There was no 'Quarter Chicken Dinners' for $10.95 or whatever its worth now. I tried to ask the waiter if they could do this, but they said they only serve Swiss food. So I tried something Swiss and it tasted, well OK. But the second I got the bill, EEK! $60 AMERICAN BUCKS! THAT CAN'T POSSIBLY BE RIGHT! Well, the waiter told me that he didn't know anything about our Canadian restaurant chain.I begged for him to lower the bill, but he kept saying no to me. I wasted about 40? Canadian dollars on this restaurant instead of some souvenirs that I wanted to buy. So the motto of this restaurant should be; 'AMERICAN SWISS CHALET, IT WAS JUST OK FOR TOO MUCH!' Tasty and authentically Swiss-German food, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Couldn't have asked for more on our last night in Vail. Will definitely be back! The stars were the kasespatzle and the heisse liebe. I'm a bit of a spatzle nut: I try them at restaurants in and out of the country, and I make my own at home. This spatzle dish is superb: the texture is firm with just enough chew, the mixture of cheese is nice and stinky ;) The heisse liebe brought back good memories for my husband, who use to get this a lot as a child spending summer vacations in Austria. The raspberry sauce was nice and tangy, and complemented the ice cream very well. I have to say, as far as price goes, it's roughly the same as restaurants like Terra Bistro. But I would prefer the Swiss Chalet any day over Terra. The food was way tastier, there is no pretention, the atmosphere was laid back. Just what we need after a day in the snow. read more

Having been to Zermatt last year, I would definitely say that Swiss Chalet is NOTHING like what you get in Switzerland. The ventilation is very poor. Our eyes were watering throughout the entire meal due to all the fumes. I think my friend almost had an asthma flare up. We got the Kasefondue (cheese appy). It came premade--there was no presentation at the table. It was okay. The bread was stale. I tried the lentil soup--it was way too salty to enjoy. For entree, I ordered the duck. Again, just okay. The duck was slightly overcooked and tough. Flavor was not too bad. The accompanying dumplings were tasteless and definitely not worth the calories. My friend ordered the lamb. We have eaten here twice and while they make a fun raclette, they don't get it right with their cheese fondue. They add a third cheese beyond the traditional Gruyere and Emmenthaler, and that third cheese makes the mixture too creamy. I would avoid that and stick to the beef or raclette.
