I went last night with some co-workers for the first time. I have Celiac disease and am nervous when I eat out. They did a great job making me feel safe and I have suggested them to be added to the best GF app- Gluten Dude. My food was excellent and I appreciated the chef coming out to talk to me about my safe options. On another note, my friend that said she did not like brussel sprouts shared them with my other friend and now doesn't hate brussel sprouts. I couldn't try them but they smelled fantastic. read more

Going back tonight, and next week, and planning a holiday meet-up in December. VERY nice owners and staff. Our group tried four different main courses and every one looked and tasted excellent. Let's just say you may want to we're stretchy pants if you come here to eat because it's that good. We had the Brutta they put truffle oil on it. It was so good. I probably could have eaten 10 of them, also had chicken and waffles, Chicken was cooked to perfection and seasoned to the nines, also had the pork belly southwestern sandwich with garlic mashed potatoes and live music outside could not have asked for anything more oh wait but yes, we did had the pineapple jalapeño margarita, yes that was amazing as well. This is not a filet cut of meat it's a cheap NY strip cut. They didn't include any of the sauces requested. The seasoned fries have zero taste to them and the steak tastes average at best. This is for an 80+ dollar mean with another entree and desert. So much for Durango's "best keep secret". Frankly I ought to be refunded for everything but the 20% tip because it isn't the bartender/waitress's fault my meal turned out this way. Rated well and menu seemed good but did not live up to expectations. Chicken wings were good but the Polish Sausage was poor. The sauage itself was ok, but don't expect a great deal of flavor. The menu said "mustard cream" but I would call it creamy mustard, there was hardly any mustard flavor at all, it was way out of balance. The "sauerkraut" was the most disappointing, it was nothing more than sliced red cabbage, there was certainly no fermenting done. The spaetzle were little grease balls not the usual size. I belive the dish is part of the new fall menu, but before you order give them a month to possibly get it right. The hamburger was greasy. On the plus side the wait staff were great. read more

Ordered the Chicken and Waffles with Maple Syrup. Came out with fake maple syrup/corn syrup artificial color/flavor bs. Asked for real maple syrup. Brought out the same. Asked to see the container. "Maple syrup flavor." Not cool. False advertising. Sent it back and had it taken off the bill. I try to eat fairly healthy with minimal processed foods, minimal corn syrup and minimal artificial ingredients. I expect a menu to reflect reality. Maple Syrup is maple syrup. The real deal, made from maple trees the old fashioned way. The service was good and my wedge salad was excellent. Hopefully the owner corrects the menu to reflect reality. read more

We happened upon this bar on the way back to our vehicle . We had our dogs and it started raining and even though there wasn't anyone on the patio everyone was super welcoming and friendly. They took care of us and our dogs, water for both and an awesome mixed drink for me and beer for the husband. Inside was warm with lights and live music!! 4 of us had dinner at Public House 701 on 3/7/25. 3 of us had the Black Bean Burger. All of us got food poisoning. I had diarrhea. My two friends had diarrhea and stomach cramps. I suspect it was the chipolte mayo because I scraped half of it off my burger and didn't get a sick as my two friends. I sent them an email the next day explaining what happened. No response. I gave it a week, and then called (during business hours), and left a message because nobody answered the phone. Still have not heard anything from them. I'm very disappointed because we had liked going there, but won't be going again. read more

We have a second home in Durango and love the dining scene. I thought I had been to all the well known restaurants in Durango. I was looking for a place to host my son's wedding rehearsal dinner and came across The Public House which opened in July of 2023. I was surprised I hadn't heard of it so dined there with friends to check it out. It is simply AMAZING! We've been back many times since our discovery and tried many different items on the menu and have been very pleased every time. We just hosted the rehearsal dinner there on 7/5 and it was out of this world! The owner, Connie, was super flexible with our menu requests and went above and beyond to ensure our party for 73 people was a great success. The small stage was absolutely perfect for speeches and it was the perfect environment to love and celebrate the bride and groom! AND - the service was impecable all the way around! read more

The Arancini on the appetizer was the only really good thing we got. The pasta dinner was a lacking in flavor and had so many onions, I felt like it was onions with a side of pasta. The Mac n cheese appetizer was better than the pasta but we got it with brisket, which was ok, not great. But you get huge chunks and it is not very tender. Again just an ok item. However when you consider the price of the food, go somewhere else. I will say the service was good, everyone seemed very nice. The ambiance is good- a little noisy from the road but you are in a downtown area so overall good. Bottom line for my experience atmosphere good, service good, food meh, but considering price of it I would not recommend. read more

DELICIOUSNESS alert!!!! Public House 701 Restaurant in Durango has made our very short list of go-to places to eat! The food was hot, fresh, tasty and made from a chef (Chef Kayl is amazing!!!) that has pride in her craft. The smoked wings were cooked perfectly, and the fish & chips as well as the short rib tacos filled our bellies with delight! Let's not forget the drinks....great wine and the BEST cosmo I've ever had! You'd think we were stuffed by now (we were!!) but Alex, our super friendly and entertaining server, set the homemade desserts menu in front of us....couldn't resist the cheesecake!!! After a day of visiting Durango we stopped here for Happy Hour and an early dinner. We asked to be seated outdoors and enjoyed the shaded patio. We started with Happy Hour drink specials, and the drinks were pretty good. For appetizers our friends had the Arancini and they raved about the flavor. We enjoyed the Caprese, which was refreshing on a hot day. My wife and I both had burgers (the Four Corners and also the Burrata). Both were juicy burgers with good flavor. I especially enjoyed the Chipotle aioli on my burger. The fries were nice and crispy. We were way too full for desert. Serrvice throughout the meal was friendly and accomodating. Located at the corner of 7th Street and East 2nd Avenue, 701 Public House is one of Durangos newer and as yet undiscovered dining gems. After a hot day touring Mesa Verde, my wife and I needed a quiet and relaxing dinner. The good food and pleasant environment we discovered at 701 was the perfect antidote to an exhausting day. Two blocks removed from the crowds of Main Street, the restaurant is a quiet oasis from the hordes of tourists. You enter through an east patio sheltered from the sweltering late afternoon sun. It was still in the mid 90's so we chose to eschew the wrought iron tables and chairs for the cooler environs of the interior dining room. Large and spacious, the dining room seats patrons at tables and half booths. Stairs lead to a balcony with additional seating and what appears to be a stage occupies the back wall. We were greeted by Connie, one of the owners who took us to one of the half booths. The space was big enough for my wife and I to share the bench seat. One nice touch is that they left a glass water decanter at our table. Definitely helps with service The menu is short and eclectic with an interesting selection of starters which immediately caught my wife's eye. She chose the Arancini starter, and the Macaroni & Cheese Side and Asparagus sides. I behaved normally and selected the Burrata Burger. The Arancini consisted of three golf ball sized fried Risotto appetizers served with pesto and marinara sauces. I've made traditional rice based Arancini and this was a delightful lightly breaded smooth and rich treat. The Gruyère in the Macaroni and Cheese shown through and the use of Orecchiette pasta was an interesting choice to present the cheese. The Asparagus was crispy but not super al dente. My wife likes raw vegetables but she said it was prepared perfectly. They did not ask how I wanted my burger prepared (I prefer medium if the facility grinds its own steak) but it came out medium well. It was juicy; I don't know what their blend is but it held up well. Served on a ciabatta bun (I'm a member of ban the hamburger bun movement tired of watching my buns disintegrate) with garlic aioli and basil reduction (a welcome change from the usual condiments) it was delicious. The burger was served with a side of double fried fries with crunchy exteriors and soft interior. They were well seasoned meaning: NOT. TOO. SALTY. The owners suggested a Rose they had just received from a Colorado based vintner. My wife, who has experienced some bad Rose, pronounced if one of the best she has tasted. Not too sweet with the right amount of acidity for her palate. I had iced tea and in perhaps the only negative of the night found it to be quite weak. In all the service was outstanding with our server Margaret being attentive and friendly. The owners, Connie and Dave, also made an effort to insure our satisfaction and spent a good deal of time discussing wines with my wife. The restaurant was not very busy so I am not so naive to believe we would receive the same amount of attention had it been busier. My husband and I often come here. We are local residents of Durango. A while back we met the owner Connie. Later as we kept coming back we met her husband David. He is from out of state but Connie is from my home town Farmington New Mexico. Our experience every time we come here is delightful. The bar staff are unique and the cocktails are as well. They have a solid menu. The chef is a friend of ours so we know it will be epic each time we dine. But more than that is the hospitality. I don't feel ignored when I walk in. And the atmosphere is beautiful. Thanks David and Connie for taking a not so great spot (Fur Trappers) and creating a lovely experience! We are lucky to have this spot. They also have a gorgeous patio and dining spots. My favorite is the velvet couches which offers a great view! read more

First time here and probably last. The food was mediocre. We had the Burrata appetizer with the balsamic reduction, very little balsamic, and some wilted greens for decoration that could have been left off. We also had the mussles in a sauce that would be better if it was a bit more hearty. This was just too watery. On the plus side, there were a ton of mussles. We were told about the menu and some popular choices but then found out we had to wait because it was happy hour and they don't serve dinner during happy hour ?? I feel like they may want to change this in the future as they are only open from 4-10. For dinner, we ordered the chicken and waffles and the Korean short rib tacos. Chicken and waffles were ok. The waffles were pretty bland. The tacos were pretty hearty, which is nice, but they were nothing to write home about. Also had a side of Mac n cheese that was meh. We paid $80+ all and all it wasn't horrible, but if I'm gonna spend that kind of money for dinner, there are many other places I would choose in Durango. read more

Of the four meals we ordered, two of which were cheeseburgers, both were overcooked (requested rare and medium rare and got medium for both).We ordered a side of bread and it was stale. I ordered a spicy pineapple margarita and it was watery and tasted awful. I told the server about my drink and he said he would talk to the manager/owner? She later came over and we told her about the burgers and the margarita. She did say they could make another burger but it seemed like too much trouble as it was late and we had an early morning train excursion. She didn't do anything about the drink. So bottom line. I paid for a $12 drink which was undrinkable, bread that cost $3 and was stale so we didn't eat it, and we didn't even get an apology. On the plus side, our server was excellent. read more
