Stopped by here before a hike and had a wonderful experience. We ordered the chicken breast, potato salad, the duck and goat cheese salad, brussels sprouts, and salmon. Everything was very tasty with the tiniest of complaints about the brussels sprouts, being a little hard. However, they still had a good flavor. We prefer soft brussels sprouts but that can absolutely be just personal preference. The price was also on the slightly higher end although I do believe it's worth the price of admission. Overall, would recommend and would absolutely come back here again in the future.

As you can see from these photos, this is how we received our food. literally just thrown into a box. I really don't understand the hype around this place, but i guess everyone is different. Not only were our sandwiches "deconstructed" upon arrival, but the server messed up the order from jump street. We stated no tomatoes due to allergy, we received tomatoes. We asked for ranch dressing, we received no ranch dressing. We also received no straws or napkins. We will not be back as it is blatantly obvious that the employees and or owners have let quality slide and the current standards are below subpar.

Ordered the Devil's Elbow sandwich and Sliced Smoked Duck to go. Service was friendly and efficient. The Devil's Elbow was good. Lots of moist pork and fried pickles. Without sauce, I went with the Catamount Gold, it was pretty bland. It's a personal preference, but I like to taste some dry rub in my pulled pork. The Sliced Smoked Duck was INSANELY DELICIOUS! It is not just the best smoked duck I have ever had, which it definitely was, but possibly the best duck I have ever had. I am no newbie when it comes to duck. I usually order it if it's on the menu and make it myself, including on my Traeger. I made dinner around the smoked duck the next day, with asparagus, maitake mushrooms, sweet onions and hatch chiles. So good! Due note the limited hours, but if you are nearby when they are open, definitely give them a try. The creek setting is a very nice bonus.

Wowza! This place was good! Me and The Hubs (both retired) like to take scenic drives through Kittredge and Evergreen periodically but we usually do it mid-week and on days when this place isn't open (not intentionally, of course). Well, that's going to change! When we arrived a little after 1 PM we noted while we were walking up to the front of the restaurant that there was a very large outdoor patio with plenty of shaded seating available. A very personable restaurant staff member was outside the door taking orders as we walked up. After perusing the menu of what was available (note: some items were already sold out at 1:15-ish, like the smoked duck breast - sigh, maybe next time), we ordered the following to share: 1/4 pound each pulled pork and brisket, 1/2 rack of ribs, one slice of bacon, 8 oz each baked beans, cucumber salad, and the seasonal vegetable which was grilled asparagus, and two pieces of Texas toast. And yes, we were stuffed by the time we left. Everything was fabulous, but if I had to choose one standout, it would be the ribs. They were very nicely smoked and super tender. The meat came off the bone very easily but it wasn't like some ribs that have been cooked so long that they border on mushy. These were perfect! The baked beans were good, as well - not the overly sweet variety (just slightly sweet and made with two kinds of beans). Again, everything was fresh and delicious. After you order your food, they give you a number and then bring out your food. While waiting, find table and then go to the condiment station and get paper plates, utensils, napkins, water, pickles, peppers, and sliced onions for your meal. They have four flavors of sauce on the tables. We didn't use any on our food (nothing needs any sauce), but we did taste them and all were very good. The patio was super relaxing under the trees and right next to a creek. We went just recently so the patio was a relaxed post-summer atmosphere. Most important of all, I can't think of anything to complain about. They even had clean, well-stocked restrooms!

Visiting friends while in CO and after our hike i was told about this place! The menu offered a great variety of options, including brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and smoked chicken. I opted for the brisket and was blown away by the tenderness and flavor of the meat. The sides were also fantastic, with standout dishes like the mac and cheese and the collard greens. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also great, with a cozy and casual vibe that was perfect for a weekend meal with friends.

Best Smokehouse! I called ahead to see how they were handling guests. They recommended ordering our food in advance and they would save us a table. When we arrived our food was packaged as a to go, but we got to sit at a small table next to the creek. This is my fourth time visiting Switchback, first time as a Colorado resident and it was better then ever! FAST-C review Food: AMAZING! We preordered Pulled Pork, Brisket, Chicken Breast, Waffle Fries and Fried Giardinera, with one of each of their great BBQ sauces. Root Beer is our favorite. Of course we had to add a couple of IPA's. All the meats had a great smoke. Waffle Fries & Fried Giardinera were crisp and flavorful! Atmosphere: There is only outdoor seating available, first serve basis. It is February so it was cold, but love sitting by their creek and enjoying a great beer and smoked meats. Service: I didn't get our hosts name, but she took our order over the phone and sat us when we got there. She was really nice! One of the chefs also poked his head out the back door to check on us and make sure everything was great. While we were leaving another person also poked his head out to thank us for stopping by. You couldn't ask for a friendlier place! Tips: During Covid, call ahead with your order and time you will be by and everything will be ready fir you when you get there, to either sit down outside or to take with you. Covid: everyone was wearing masks, chefs were wearing gloves, no indoor seating, so if your going to eat there and outside plan ahead for your own warmth.

Wonderful ice cream shop; tried the salty caramel which was lovely. However it tasted more like vanilla bean ice cream, couldn't taste the caramel. Will try another flavor next time. Recommend giving this delightful shop a try!

The best bbq I've had in soooo long! Tender. Smoky. Loved eating by the river. We had pulled pork, macaroni and cheese (velveeta-ish but yummy), grilled asparagus and the duck sandwich.

My friend came here with her boyfriend a few years ago and fell in love with this place. I finally moved to Colorado in December and they came up to visit so obviously they took me to come try Switchback! I'm from Texas and I love barbecue but I truly never eat barbecue unless someone else offers it. I take pride in being a macaroni connoisseur so that was my main mission when we decided to come here We all ordered different things so we could kind of have a buffett of options and it was absolutely outstanding!!! The duck breast was so good and tender. Ribs and Brisket were amazing as well. The macaroni....SO GOOD!!! But my overall favorite side was the Giardinera! Incredible flavor I loved it all! We also all got beer and sat by the river and there's truly nothing better than that...especially being from Texas because that's pretty much all we do. So it was a nice home feeling being there...just a little different with snow!

This is my favorite restaurant. Truly such a blessing to have them in our small town. I've been coming here for many years, since they opened. Can't get enough of the duck. You can't go wrong with literally any of the meat from here. The Devil's Elbow is a go-to. The cowboy baked beans are so good. The Switchback Standard bbq sauce is addictive. I love to eat outside here in the summer. The service is always attentive and everyone is so kind. Be mindful if you go too late in the day they may be sold out of some items (high demand for delicious food!!). Well done all around, SS!

Decided to take a drive up to Switchback based on reviews, it was about a 30 minute drive. We ordered our food to go as it was not super wheel chair friendly and the outside patio that we could access was full. Drove down the street about 1 mile to a local park. The fried food (zucchini & fried pickles) were enclosed in a wax Togo type of box which held in all the moisture and caused all the breading to come off, basically it was wet and soggy. We ordered a few sandwiches, one was shredded chicken which was like eating beef jerky (VERY dry) It was a lunch for 4 people, only 1 side and 4 sandwiches, set us back over $60. Was not worth it, and it had a very basic taste. I will not be driving up or BBQ again anytime soon. read more

Delicious! The drive up the hill while a little sketchy in some parts but pretty in others was definitely worth it. We had the devil's elbow, Mount Royal, and the elk sausage and it was all excellent. Cool place to hangout and drink as well. A must go! read more

Stopped by this week while I was on vacation driving through the Rockies. They had just opened the other day and you couldn't eve tell! I have always been a fan of good BBQ joints and I must say Switchback was great BBQ. Don't miss this place if you are in the area! Looking forward to returning on vacation next fall. read more

As a Kansas City BBQ enthusiast, Switchback offers a lot of new and unique flavors. Truly great dishes at very reasonable prices. The Montreal brisket with the root beer BBQ sauce is probably my favorite. Nice ambiance and an awesome creekside patio for nice Colorado afternoons. Say hi to Mark at the bar and enjoy a Kokanee on draft. This place is worth a trip. read more

Ok, I have been around bbq (if any one of you have seen my Instagram, you would know), and this place is the real deal. The ribs are probably some of the best I've ever had, the staff is uber friendly, and the atmosphere can't be beat. Get there early as they're known to run out of BBQ and close up shop. Paired with pulled pork, house made cole slaw, mac and "f'ing" cheese that was like butter, and a bar filled with booze and craft beer (watching a waiter cringe when a woman asked for a Corona was fantastic). Speaking of the drinks, you have to try the Pickleback. Don't ask, just do it. Do it like your life depends on it. Do it like the fate of the world depends on it. I tried it because the bartender said it would stop a zombie apocalypse. I think he may just be right... read more

Great BBQ! We ordered a little of everything.. Ribs, pulled chicken, roasted duck, sweet potato fries, beans and coleslaw. Good stuff! Wish they were serving some pulled pork, but it was sold out. Good portions, fair prices, an overall great experience. read more

I absolutely LOVE the meat here, and the bbq sauce choices. I've picked up a pulled pork slider on the run, great buy for the $$$. The reason I only gave 4 stars is because they often run out of meat and close their doors. It's disappointing to plan to stop in after a hike just to find out that they are unexpectedly closed. I'll still plan to stop by if they're open, because it's just that good. read more

The meat was ok but the restaurant seemed dirty. And when the waitress used her rag to clean the floor then proceeded to wipe down the tables with the same rag.... we were done!!! Gross!! read more

All 5 of my kids loved the food. I was told by my 12 year old to give this place 5 stars and it was well deserved! We ordered chicken, bacon, pulled pork, and brisket with a few sides. The meat was awesome especially the bacon. The fries were crisp outside and tender inside. Sauces were unique and flavorful so I must say the food was great. The staff... Well they were awesome too. They were accommodating, friendly, and helpful since it was our first time. We will definitely be going again! read more

My wife and I stopped in for an early lunch & had a good visit. We ordered up brisket, cheddar jalapeño sausage, pulled chicken and sides. The brisket had a little different taste to it due to the brining process they use, it was good with a smoky flavor but not what I'm expecting out of a smoked brisket. The sausage and chicken were great, coleslaw was spot on but the cucumber salad was a little odd in flavor. All in all a good visit and you can't beat sitting outside practically on top of the rushing creek having barbecue. read more

So...the sandwhiches and ribs looked great. I had The John Candy (their version of BLT) it was awesome, bacon was fantastic minus the hair I found. Also, ordered the brisket Montreal for $9 and all that comes with is a tiny brown 3x5 paper container, no sides, no bread. The sides are separate cost. I was just hoping to get a typical BBQ plate with meat, side and Texas toast. Was very shocked to get a small carton of meat and nothing else. Potato salad was soaked in sauce. read more

Loved this place! The food was delicious. I went with a party of eight and we sampled everything. One dish was better than the next. Loved the salmon, duck and ribs... all the sides were fantastic. I'd go back in a heartbeat - it's worth the hour that we drive. Lovely spot creek side. I'd recommend it - lots of fun, casual atmosphere and really delicious food. read more

We were driving through Kittredge on our way home from a hike, discussing what we could make for dinner at home because we were starving. When we drove by Switchback Smokehouse we could smell the scent of the smoked meats. We pulled over, looked up the place on Yelp to see their menu, and turned around. We both tried the Devil's Elbow - a pile of pulled pork topped with cole slaw on a buttery bun. You can get fried pickles and fried onions, too, and it comes with a side, or you can upcharge $1 to get any of their side dishes. I got the mac 'n' cheese, hubby got the sweet potato fries. Then you also get to pick a sauce from a selection of about 5 or 6 different sauces. Everything was so delicious. The sandwiches are huge so bring a big appetite. The food came out quick, too. The staff was super friendly. It was a great experience all around and the food, oh man, was so very good. Highly recommend it! read more

Not the best barbecue I have ever eaten, but it was pretty good. The ribs were amazing. The chicken wings weren't my favorite. The waffle fries are delicious. One of the best fries I've ever had. The service was really good. Very nice people. There was a nice place outside to sit and enjoy your food. The serving portions isn't the biggest and isn't the smallest. Just wanted to add that in the latest JeffCo health inspection Switchback was one of the 80439 restaurants with the least amount of violations, only 1. While I really don't care for the brisket the place must be run in a professional manner. Props for that. read more

Oh my god. Good barbeque in the Denver area? Never would have thunk it, but then we found this place. And holy crap, this is good barbeque. Amongst the best I've had. The ribs are outstanding, the pulled pork is really good. The chicken legs are a bit meh, if only because the ribs are so good. The baked beans, stuffed dates, and fried zucchini are awesome. According to some regulars we talked to, the really outstanding item on the menu is the montreal style smoked brisket. Unfortunately, they were out when we were there, but it sounded absolutely amazing. It's totally out of the way, but worth a side trip on your way home from the mountains. read more

This is our go to BBQ place! We love the variety of the meats and the smoked bacon is heaven. The bar is also awesome and they've got great unexpected options. Like most great smokehouses, they're open til they run out so make sure you get there early enough to have access to the whole menu. Beautiful setting in Kittredge and we love hanging with our dog on the patio. read more

The food was amazing. Mark was a real OG! With a chill atmosphere and great menu, Switchback is the perfect excuse for a night out. Not much compares to the lemon aioli atop the bed of perfectly cooked asparagus, accompanied with the smoked meats of your choice. Go for the sausage--you won't be disappointed! read more

I had a really great experience yesterday. Much better than all the high end places I've been lately. The setup is cool and the dude at the front that took our order was super friendly and informative. My lady got the duck and it was bomb, the Mac and cheese killed it, and the waffle fries were a perfect pairing with my sandwich. We will be back! read more

Maybe it's the pork that is great (they ran out before we got there) but this place is average at best and I've only eaten at around ten other BBQ places. The ribs were too wet and over smoked with a really bland rub. A rib should be able to stand on its own and both of my kids who typically love ribs would only take one bite. The fact they think my BBQ is way better is not a good sign as mine is good but not great. The duck was all smoke too. Sides were OK although my daughter did like the Mac. Add in a 45 minute wait for a fifteen person line and I won't be coming back. read more

This guy knows how to smoke! St Louis ribs were perfectly pink and fall off the bone. The Elbow (pulled pork sandwich with slaw and fried pickles) was huge!! Enough for at least two people. Cannot wait to come back and try more. Great atmosphere. read more

Meats smoked daily, Thursday-Sunday and we open at 11 to 6 or until we sell out. Great atmosphere, house-made sides like mac and cheese, cucumber salad and ice cream. Full bar. Indoor and outdoor seating. Dog friendly. Have you met the Devil's Elbow? We call it the gateway sandwich as it's; our signature sandwich with pulled pork piled high with fried pickles and coleslaw.

History

Established in 2012.

Nestled on the Bear Creek in lovely Kittredge, when Darryl saw this spot and started renovating, everyone stopping by seemed to demand BBQ...so that's what he did. Ribs, duck, salmon, pork and chicken to name a few. We can't believe it's been 10 years. Our seasonal summer ice cream shop is open May to September. We are open Thursday through Sunday.

With quite the selection of delicious smoked meats and plenty of sides to enjoy...the key is to wear sweatpants. The recently opened Switchback Smokehouse is the newest best thing to happen to Kittridge, the tiny town located between Morrison and Evergreen. I would recommend the Rooster Booster with the fried pickles and the homemade barbecue sauce with a side of switchmac and cheese or the montreal style brisket with baked beans. The chalk board menu features the comfort food they will surely become known for and the dining room and bar have a casual Colorado feel. Nothing will beat washing down the smokehouse flavor with the Canadian lager Kokonee on tap, can't wait to do it again on that incredible patio. Wherever you choose to eat it, Switchback Smokehouse should not be missed. PS if traveling up the hill, beware of elk crossings and that notorious speed trap just outside of Morrison. read more

When im in the area this is my go too bbq place. Having lived in TX for 25 plus years i know hood bbq. This is about as excellent a place as i have found in CO. It is also a cool place to hang by the river. Dog friendly, nice relaxed atmosphere. Only downsides is that the ordering procedure is pretty sucky and cramped, and the food is pricey. Still the food is good enough and the atmoshere is great so i would say that can easily be overlooked read more

Its great to have a smokehouse up in Kittredge! I am a huge fan of BBQ and they do it right. Fun relaxed atmosphere, great food and great service. You can tell they love what they do! I have had the brisket, pulled pork and ribs. I'd say my favorite is the ribs. Delicious! Unfortunately they do run out of certain items in summer so get there early if you want the brisket! read more

We were in the area on vacation and tried out this new restaurant. My husband and I went back a couple of times. Everything was so good, we wanted a chance to try as many dishes as possible. WOW! You cannot go wrong here. Hands down best smoked meat I have had in the world. I don't usually like anything deep fried, but I tried the fried zucchini and it was excellent - not too heavy or overly battered. Potato salad also very fresh - not laden in a soup of mayo. Brisket and Bacon were sold out at 5pm, seems to be a recurring theme. Other than that, all of the food is great and at a good price for BBQ. Pulled pork and chicken, elk sausage, mac and cheese, and coleslaw are all good. Spicy sauce has a kick. Decent beer selection also! read more
