I was excited to go there after checking the reviews but it wasn't as authentic i expected it would be. Spice levels are not really spicy. But the ambiance and service was good. The food was on time and was fresh. The waiters were really friendly. Cute little spot in Birmingham. I got lucky and found street parking easy but apparently there is a parking structure on the back side of the restaurant where u can park two hours for free. The food was tasty. I tried the fried dumplings and crispy roll, as appetizer. Very satisfying. Then I had the entree of drunken noodles with shrimp. Not too pricey at all. To be honest I wasn't blown away, I could take it or leave it. On the other hand if my boyfriend was writing this review he would give them 5+ stars and raves about Sy Thai all the time. To each their own I guess. The pad thai has a bit of a sweeter tastes than I am typically use to, but not in a bad way, just not what I was use to. I was disappointed on the lack of sauce on the Pad Pak Curry Dish, as I typically like this dish saucey, so I can ladle it over my side of rice. I found the Medium in the pad thai to have zero kick so I would need to up the anty next time to Medium + or hot. I also thought pricing was more than I am typically use to: $12 an entree oppose to $9-$10. And my cheaper Thai favs pack the carryout order in those awesome reusable black containers with clear lids (perfect for taking your lunch to work in). I wouldn't write Sy Thai off completely, I'd just rather explore other Thai options in the area. read more

Been eating here for over 10 years and never been disappointed . My favorite dishes are the egg noodle, noodle roni and the crispy shrimp appetizer. The portions are generous and they have the spice down . Recently tried their crispy Asian wings and I recommend them if you like that true Asian flavor on a chicken wing. read more

My new go-to spot for delicious Thai food! I dined in a couple of years ago and loved it, great service and flavorful dishes. After moving back to the area I had to return! My friend ordered the Drunken Noodles, and said they were the best he's ever had (which is a big deal, he's a die-hard drunken noodle fan and a regular at nearby Penn's). The chicken Pad Thai was so yummy! I've found it's so easy to get a dry Pad Thai, this one had the perfect amount of sauce. Lots of flavor and just enough spice (I chose the "hot" spice level). I want to like this place, but it's just so average, at best. I have gone to this place maybe 5-6 times, usually not by my choosing, but sheer convenience for my friends that work in Bham. Over all, just eh. It was all edible at least. The crab rangoon or crab cheese as they call it were lacking on any filling but leaning more towards cream cheese than imitation crab. The pad Thai was the real let own. The sauce was thick and heavy. There was a lack of veggies (green onions and sprouts) and absolutely no spice. This used to be our go to Thai restaurant about 20 years ago. I moved out of the area and then one of our firm's offices moved close by and I was excited to eat here again. I had the peanut noodles and my friend had pad thai. We each also ordered carry outs, crunchy rolls, pepper squid and a fried rice to not have to cook that evening. The food was dry and had no flavor. What a change! I don't know what happened, maybe they sold it, or gained new management, but I will not be going back and I will no longer recommend this restaurant to my friends, family and colleagues. Got delivery this evening. My son is a gyoza fan and was not disappointed. I had Sy's Fried Rice Dinner. It was fantastic. We both loved the rice. We ordered at 4:30pm on a Tuesday and it took two hours to arrive through GrubHub. Food was hot so I'm assuming it wasn't a delivery issue. This has been a staple in the community for decades. I love this place and the family that owns it.

I am a regular at this establishment and my last visit was very unpleasant. I waited an hour and a half inside the restaurant for a to go order only to find out that my order was either given to someone else or was not made. Since they were closing in 30 mins they could not make the duck that I paid for. I was offered more rice instead when I already paid for 2 rice dishes along with duck. I was disappointed that they did not offer me a refund for waisting my time and ultimately not receiving what I paid for. I also noticed that the restaurant was not clean. The floor was dirty along with the tables and front doors. My family and I spend a lot on Thai and we plan on taking our money else where due to no resolution from the manager on duty. read more

Stepped in here on a cold day, and was in need of some tea and a little bit of spice. Juuust right! I started off with a nice piping hot pot of jasmine tea to help thaw me out. They automatically serve you those puffy little rice chips to start, as well as some hot soup. The soup didn't blow me away, but it was pleasant enough -- a little salty (which I like). I ordered a vegetable and tofu version of a Panang Curry, medium spicy. I'm often wary of spice levels (one place's mild is another's spicy), but this was exactly the "medium" I had in mind -- perfect! My server was super-quick, kind and attentive, and the prices were completely reasonable. Didn't try the spring rolls, so I can't support or refute Aaron's comments here, but I did really enjoy the food I had. My fella heads to Birmingham for business sometimes, so the next time we're in the neighborhood, I'm geeked to bring him here. Holy on fire Batman. I was craving Thai and Ferndale was too far so we stopped in here. It was around 8:15, I was a bit nervous it was too late as they close at 10:00 but there is a crowd still, so we feel it is ok. I'm very cautious about going anywhere even near close. Anyway, I order a sampler app while waiting for my guest and it arrives as she arrives. Looks good. Two spring rolls, wrapped shrimp and crab rangoon. The spring rolls and wrapped shrimp are nice - crispy and tasty. I could do without the crab rangoon - a bit on the warm side and a bit soggy but not something we needed to send back. We order the sweet and sour red fish mild and a chicken vegetable curry - medium. The chicken was swimming in sauce and veggies but the fish is lightly breaded and fried and very good. The chicken curry is definitely not medium. I love spicy but after my first bite, I start hiccuping like crazy from the spice level. My guess is cracking up but my mouth is on fire. If I take this big factor out, the meal is standard and has quite a few vegetables, chicken and coconut milk. I think our bill is just short of 40 which isn't unreasonable. Overall, I'd go back in a pinch but will sissy down my spice level. read more

Serve what's on your menu. I ordered red curry with vegetables and tofu and they brought out the veggies and tofu with this brown-ish gravy/sauce. I didn't look anything like red curry. In fact, it did not taste anything like red curry. If it don't look like red curry and it don't taste like red curry, it ain't red curry. I asked the waitress about this twice after getting my food and she insisted that it was red curry. To add to that, whatever they did give me wasn't that good anyways. The flavor was just meh... I have tried a lot of Thai restaurants in metro Detroit and I think that Sy Thai may be my favorite. This place offers consistently good food, decent prices and large portions. I generally stick to the noodle dishes at Thai places. I think the curry noodle is really good and has a lot of good flavor. The egg noodle is also good and normally is a huge portion. The pad thai and drunken noodle are also decent. I have had difficulty finding the right spice levels at Thai restaurants lately. I think the medium here is a good level of spice without making it unbearable, but it will clear out any congestion by the end of the meal. I suggest the crab cheese (crab rangoon) as an appetizer. It's pretty standard but the orange sauce that comes with it is really good too. I also like the spring rolls. The interior is small like many asian restaurants, but it's decorated well and very clean. It's usually pretty busy especially on the weekend. The service is attentive and friendly. Sy Thai has disappointed me only once. The first time I went here I ordered the drunken noodle. When my food was served it was something with rice that I've never heard of. The waitress actually argued with me and said this was what I ordered and not drunken noodle. Eventually, they did replace it with my correct order. However, I've been back several times and nothing of this nature has happened since. read more

One of the best Thai restaurant in the area. Their noodle dishes are always very good. Their lunches come with shrimp chips and soup. Prices are under $10 and around $8 which is great! Service is good and the food comes out quickly. The vegetables seem fresh everytime. The fried rice is excellent as well. The seating isn't too big. Can get crowded during peak lunch hours. I don't know why people love this place. I was even recommended to come here for Thai food. This restaurant serves other dishes more than just Thai . They have lettuce wraps and Crab Rolls (aka Crag Rangoons) - this is a Thai restaurant damn it! So- I try to judge a Thai restaurant for its Papaya Salad (which does not exist here) and of course the Pad Thai/Drunken Noodles. Pros: They have a variety of spice levels Nothing is really Bad Cons: Service is a little slow Nothing is really Good Although the Thai food is okay, it's nothing to rave about. Ordered a Take out of about 4 dishes for my family . The food was terrible ! Will not return. After calling back to request refund we were told to bring the food back up there . After bringing the food back the woman still debated me on why it was just a matter of opinion and I should not get my refund. One of the best Thai restaurants or take-out places in the Metro-Detroit area. I'm not home often but I've already eaten from here twice and it never disappoints. We ordered a huge array of food while I was home for Christmas for like 8-9 people. My niece eats oddly only two things from here: Spring rolls and Chicken Satay. She's a kid. But the spring rolls are tasty. An interesting twist on that is to try their crispy shrimp. It is AMAZING. It's a full jumbo shrimp just twisted inside of an egg roll wrapper. Simple but absolutely delicious fried goodness. The chicken - a little dried out. Not the thing to order. What you should get is their signature Sy's Fried Rice with pineapple, curry, cashews, tomato, peas, carrots, onion, and egg. It's sticky and both fragrant of Indian and Asian spices while being both sweet and slightly spicy. Excellent. Their Pad Thai is like any other and pretty good. My Dad is a huge personal fan of their Noodle Roni. I'm not so much because it is a weird hybred of wide drunken noodles inter-meshed with cheese and cream and maybe a vegetable or two. Who thought Thai macaroni and cheese would be a hit? People like Dad, I guess. But if that is your thing, go for it. It's definitely decadent. Their curries are good. The Pattani is a good cashew red coconut curry and the Peanut is worth trying as well. I've never tried anything spicy because we have pussies in my household. The Sy Thai duck was a little dry and I didn't think it was worth the money. I'm still pretty impressed with the flavors that go into each dish though and the wide variety of items. read more

Not sure how this place is still in business. Dining area is small and cramped and the food is horrible. I ordered the udon noodles with shrimp because I HATE their pad Thai or pad se iew (I'll tell ya why later on) let's just say that I'm shocked I didn't have a sodium overdose. After a couple bites I just couldn't stomach it anymore. It had potential too :( I was able to pick up hints of teriyaki sweetness but sadly it was masked behind copious amounts of salt which literally made it inedible. The noodles were cooked well though. Drunken noodles tasted like onions and peppers. If you're into that then this dish is for you! There wasn't really a flavor profile because that :/ Pad se iew and pad Thai here are VERY inconsistent here but between the two I would say pad se iew is better. The pad Thai is in a gloopy gravy and not very peanuty like it is at most other places. This place is weird. Go somewhere else! read more

Having never really been in this area, my friend took me to Sy Thai for dinner when I went to visit her at her family's house last weekend. It wasn't too crowded when we showed up around 7/730, and we were told to sit anywhere we like (love it). We were promptly brought water and some type of chip that reminded me of a bland cheeto, for lack of a better description. Not the tastiest, but I appreciated they gave you something to snack on. I also stole a sip of my friends Thai iced tea, which was sugary beyond belief, but with that, pretty tasty.... Went with the Pa Nang curry, medium. I have to say, even medium was pretty bold for me, so go easy on spice levels (I like to think I can handle decent spice, use hot sauce, etc). The food was cooked perfectly, I felt that they didn't skimp on protein, and the potion size was HUGE. Im definitely an executive of the Clean Plate Club, and I still had to ask for a to go box. Added bonus-my friend and I paid, and ended up hanging and talking for about 30 more minutes. Our waiter continued to come by and fill our water as we chatted. Personally, I really appreciated this - I've been places where as soon as you pay, the waiter ignores your table and they're just waiting for you to leave. Not the case here at all. You know those stifling restaurants where you're scared to sneeze and your back gets sore from trying to sit properly too long? Sy Thai's vibe is the opposite of that. It's warm steamy (platonically steamy) atmosphere lets you relax, even if the friendly but rush-y waitstaff don't. We ordered two apps, the pepper squid (delicious and I liked it's pairing with fresh vegetables in addition to the stir fried ones) and the veggie fresh roll (which is freshly fresh though the chili sauce is a little upsetting). I was pleasantly surprised by the **¡¡complimentary!!** soup. Few things excite me more than free food even though it is kind of mediocre. But I'm not one to look a gift bowl of soup in the spoon and I *did* like the mushrooms in it. It's not an adventurous choice but... the pad thai is phenomenal (!!!) I ordered mine with chicken and it was just 'MMHH'! The noodles here are very good and based on the long-ish waiting time (I'm not complaining I live for the anticipation), the food is being prepared fresh. There's a good variety of places to eat in Birmingham but few are as unassuming and authentically pleasant as Sy Thai (and I've heard it's better than Lemongrass in terms of Thai cuisine) ps: due to my grudging respect for vegans and their eating habits, I have to note this place is pretty vegan friendly (*gasp* they have tofu and etc!) read more

This place isn't it for me. I used to LOVEEEE going to the one in downtown Detroit on my lunch breaks. But this location has never been good. The breaded chicken in the sesame chicken is in way too big of chunks, not bite sized whatsoever. But somehow it's always either dry and jerky-like over cooked, or it's undercooked and super gross. We decided to try ordering that dish but without meat. We asked for the usual broccoli, carrots and pineapple but please add assorted veggies INSTEAD OF the chicken. They not only charged for the full price of that dish as though we got a pound of chicken in it, but also for each added veggie. Total nickel/dime action there. For being so mediocre and not impressive, the extra charges were insulting to us. Pluses of this place is their apple salad and their vegetable fresh rolls. Both are nice. Pad Thai is pretty good, not exceptional but a solid choice. I just honestly wish this place was as good as the one in Detroit I used to frequent.
