This restaurant is now called Pho King and If I could give this place a negative rating I would. One star is being too generous. Upon walking in last night we noticed the floors were sticky, sat our table which was also sticky. Felt a couple other tables since all were empty and all were sticky. Put our infant in the high chair with a cover and used baby wipes to clean the table. No matter how hard I scrubbed the stickiness wouldn't go away but rather, black dirt covered all of the baby wipes. Ended up using our son's blanket as a table cloth, which was then tossed in the trash on our way out. I didn't eat but my husband took a bite of his pho and said it was less than appetizing. We ended up paying the bill, over $40, and leaving. We told the woman working the table was sticky and showed her the baby wipes to which she flippantly replied, sorry, and walked away. It was as if she knew the table and floors were dirty. Highly suggest you go elsewhere than this dump. If the outside dining area, what is visible to customers, is this dirty I don't want to imagine what the kitchen looks like. read more

The rice was burned, the soup was not edible, and the eggrolls were so greasy the eggrolls were dripping. On the flipside, the crab Rangoon was dried out. We spent over $70 and no one ate their food. In fact, my nephew brought food home from a deli. The deli was amazing by the way (front page). We called and spoke to someone at the Thai restaurant and she said she would refund our money. When we went back to get the money, she could not figure out how to make the credit card machine work and gave us only $45 in cash. The Pad See Ew is supposed to be a thick sweet brown sauce with whatever spice you want. There was nothing sweet about it. It totally tastes like soy sauce. If you like your fried rice more well done and 'fried' they cook the rice a bit more and darker and crispier than any other Thai place in north metro Detroit that I've been. Fair price, and portions. I recommend this place to friends and coworkers. I got k5 ( Thai chili paste fried rice). I like to add potatoes and peanuts. They're pretty good with customization. Went in to try some good ole Thai food. I ordered c-2 with beef and it came with hot and sour soup. The soup was o-k was more on the sour side. But the dish itself was excellent. I asked for hot and boy was it spicy! Just how I like it. Next time I would recommend chicken instead of beef, because when cooking with curry beef tends to suck the gravy more making it really chewy. But over all great amount of ingredients and meat. Made the special trip to 15 and Mound to see our old friend James (formerly making people sweat at Pi's Thai) and I'm glad we did. He is just a joy and we got a wonderful welcome when we walked in. It seems their intention is to be carry-out only. There's room for about 10 or 12 people to eat comfortably, but 1) they only have carry-out menus, 2) you order and pick up your food at the counter (i.e., no waiter service), and 3) there are no plates. I had to use an additional carry out container to mix my rice and vegetable curry. My Vegetable Curry with fried tofu though? Outstanding! The thing I love about James' Vegetable Curry (R6) is that it's not just a bunch of water chestnuts and bamboo with the occasional green pepper and carrot bit thrown in. He adds some sort of squash (maybe even pumpkin) and cauliflower, and I don't believe there was a single water chestnut. Also, the fried tofu was excellent; way better than what he was working with at Pi's. I hated that tofu. To any newcomers, James likes it hot. That's one of many reasons why he's so legendary. My suggestion is to take your normal spice request down at least 1/2 a grade. For example, I'm typically a medium/medium-plus girl, but I barely handle anything over mild-plus when James is cooking. Consider yourself warned. Don't try to be a hero. No one will think less of you for ordering mild. My only beef would be that someone was obviously smoking in the back while we were eating, and that just sucked. I mean, it didn't bother me as much before the smoking ban, but now that I'm so used to not having to smell smoke while I'm eating... it was a bummer for sure. read more

But, first, let me review what I expect you to know so far: 1) James, the chef, formerly was of Pi Thai's fame 2) Hot is HOTTTTTTT when you spar with him. 3) James is now the chef at the newly opened Thai King. 4) His skills, enthusiasm, and personality has a dedicated following in the area. So, the lesson for today is: 1) The spring rolls (ordered accidentally) were delightful, flavorful nuggets 2) My mild Pad Bai Kra Praow was hotter than the "hot" dishes at my previously favorite Thai place. The flavors were doing the Polka on my tongue. 3) The boyfriend ordered the Spicy Noodle dish and the "hiccup" factor was in rare form. He ordered HOT and it kicked his ass. (He admits that hiccups are good.) 4) Last, and not least, the Tom Yum was the BEST I've EVER had. Great balance of sour, spicy, sweet. 5) According to James, 'hot' at Thai King is hotter than 'hot' was at Pi Thai so... beware. Went there today. The food was good! Not Jimmy good, but solid! Jimmy won't be back until the middle of January, so if you are planning on getting awesome Jimmy food you will have to wait. I have always been 50/50 with this place but today will have been my last visit.When Thai King first opened i really liked the story behind James and his personality and the food was great.However,the way they ran the place was out of control along with their prices.I have been there twice since i suspect James stopped cooking and you can tell that they have no passion nor care for the quality of food. Today i ordered chicken pad thai just to see if they had the basics down...no such luck.Thai food should comprise sweet,sour,spicy and savory all i recieved was spicy and out of a spice shaker spicy.My advice would be to get James in there full time or re-teach the other employees how to cook or just shut it down.. Ugh. I ordered the Gang Gai and 2 spring rolls. Both were bland! Other then the mass amounts of curry (even though I asked for mild) the Gang Gai had no flavor. Eating the mushy spring rolls or trying to dip them into the flavorless plum sauce was also a disappointment. This was my first time here and the girl on the phone failed to mention there was a combo that consisted of what I ordered that was 4 dollars cheaper. I ordered chicken curry noodles add broccoli extra hot, 2 spring rolls and a hot and sour soup and my total came to $15! Definitely enough for 2 full meals. Once in a while, I have my "east-side" days. On these days, I try to hit up those places east of I-75 that I wouldn't normally hit up if I can't have the whole day to zoom around that 'hood. On my last two east-side days, I hit up Thai King for their reasonably priced lunch specials. I was super curious about this place, mainly because of the Yelp hype, the King James legend and amusement that was courtesy of the Thai food themed Yelp talk threads. Ehhh, I gotta say, I'm not blown away. Shock, horror! I'm not bowing down to King James. I know I have to go back to try other things but the few dishes I tried so far, I'm not particularly over-the-moon, puppy dogs and ice cream cones in love with this place. I did really like the basil fried rice, yay super fresh basil, however my chicken was really dry and unappealing. The curry in the curry lunch specials is just ok in my book -- ok enough to steal bites of it from my boyfriend's plate but not good enough to order my own. Five stars for the service. Three for the food. I didn't use atmosphere in the star rating because we did take out. However, I will talk about it. The set up is pretty simple. You order and pay for your food. Then wait at a table to dine in or wait to carry out. My husband and I carried out. It was late at night and the time it took for our food to be made was very fast. There was a table of 2 in the dining room. The dining room looked a lot like a typical Subway restaurant dining room with the particle board booths. What I saw of the place looked clean. The service impressed me. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. We ordered Pad Thai and crab ragoon. My husband and I both enjoy spicy dishes so we were excited to go to a place where the reviews warned that they took spice seriously. The woman who took our order explained the spice levels. Warned us that their mild was pretty spicy. We explained that we normally order extra spicy at other restaurants. She helped us pick the spice level of medium. In the most polite way possible, refused to let us go beyond that level. (I'm glad she did). While we waited for our order, the cook came out and verified that we for sure wanted medium. After some convincing, he went back and made it for us. I was very impressed with the spice verification process. I know they were doing a cya but the way they handled it was polite and professional and made me feel cared for. As for the food itself, it was fresh looking and tasting. The crab ragoon was pretty good. Less breading and more filling than your typical order elsewhere. The dipping sauce that went with it was pretty unique also. I'd order that again. The reason I gave three stars for the food was the Pad Thai. It was spicy. The exact level I expected and craved. However, I could not taste much else. It was not the Pad Thai flavor I am used to. This version tasted oily and spicy and that is it. The noodles were the only thing I could taste. I guess in summary, the sauce needed more flavor. I'll be back. After all I was a big fan of Pi's Thai once upon a time and this James fellow was supposedly the great chef behind Pi's. First time there I got the Pad Thai and I found it mediocre, I decided one more try was in order before writing a review....So I walk in there last night and to my horror it looked like two mediterranean dudes were cooking the Thai food, no King James or any other Thai people. Green curry with chicken they let me sub veggies for veggies so I got mushrooms green peppers carrots eggplants and extra spicy and I asked for rice in a separate container so it don't get soggy and no extra charge like other places. Went in for lunch. I found the portions to be P-Lenty. Ate my fill and was only half way through. The medium Pad See Eww was definitely as hot if not hotter than many places Hot. It was good but not quite expected, unlike other reviewers I was not warned before ordering. Flavors may have been somewhat lost in the heat, but still seemed to be good quality. I'm putting this place on my list next time I get a head cold, I'm sure this would clear it out. The Pad Thai was also medium, but substantially more mild. Flavors were more easily detectable and quite good. Spring rolls are the typical cabbage rolls, seemed like out of a box. Its a order at the counter, be seated type affair. The napkins, chop sticks and silverware were empty, and the tables were a little messy, some kind of construction was going on as well. Since my rediscovered love of Thai food, I used my fancy dancy Yelp app to find this location on my way home from work one day. The menu was decent, and after some negotiation with the guy behind the register, he agreed to my free Yelp spring roll. I went against my taste buds and tried something new....ordered the Drunken Noodles and my beloved crab rangoon thingies. The Drunken Noodles were good, but compared to other Thai food I've had, seemed a bit overcooked in the noodles and a bit congealed in the take out box. I almost wish I had ordered my standard Pad Se'ew so I could better compare Thai joints, but we'll just have to try that again another time. read more

I've been meaning to try this place out for some time now... but between work and random other shenanigans, I just didn't. Shame on me for missing out. Popped in for some take-out during work today. Grabbed a great-priced lunch special for my coworker (J3 - Kow Pad Bai Kra Praow with shrimp and mild spice) and the highly-praised Tom Yum soup (normal spice level) with chicken for myself. Verdict? OM NOM NOM NOMNOM NOM NOM The Kow Pad was well-spiced and fresh, although my coworker thinks he liked it with chicken better. The Tom Yum was divine... a perfect blend of sour, sweet and spicy notes. And the mushrooms! Dear Lord, there were some serious mushrooms floating around in that decadent broth. The only qualm I had with the soup is that it does have a slightly greasy appearance... As a side to my Tom Yum, I snagged the chicken rolls. Tasty, but nothing super special. More just a filler to help tide me over to dinner. :) Bottom line? I'll be going back. This is one of those restaurants where some things are better than others as opposed to everything being good. I had the pad Thai which was strictly average. Others in my party had the curry which they enjoyed and my taste of it was enjoyable. Biggest plus huge portions . Chef James has left the building! Apparently he's in Thailand "for some woman". Hope she's givin him some sweet lovin cause she's getting some damn fine home cookin'! I thought James must still be around after receiving my Pad Ped with shrimp cooked medium since it would have earned a hot rating at most Thai joints and I hadn't had Thai that good since...well, since Chef James was cooking at Pi's Thai. Whoever James apprenticed there he taught some things to, although making dynamite Tom Yum soup wasn't one of them. Who knows it I'll ever have Tom Yum soup that good again. So don't be too skeptical when you see that the guy behind the front counter looks like he should be working in a cell phone store. He was friendly enough, in a dude-bro way, but I kept expecting him to ask me if I didn't want to upgrade my phone to a better model. I liked that there's a new 2.0 version of the classic cartoon that was up on the wall at Pi's Thai illustrating the different spice levels. Could have used more sweat drops on the diner's forehead, but still had the classic red face, bulging eyes and fire breathing. After eating at the new Pi's Thai I think Chef James should have ripped down the old cartoon when he left. My experience here is making me rethink my ratings of the downtown Thai restaurants. I'll only have the car I'm temporarily driving for a couple more days so they've kind of got me by the nads. Hit this place up, eastsiders! This place is hot. And I mean it. As a person who regularly orders hot at thai places, I thought I was dialing it down a notch with medium+, but boy was I wrong. I couldn't sleep that night it was so spicy. But that's not to say the spice overwhelms the flavor, on the contrary, it adds to it. The dishes here are very savory, and the sauces are quite thick, which to me is a sign of quality. And they do not offer cheap gimmicks like free eggroll or free soup with the order, because usually, free things aren't worth it. The money you pay covers the quality ingredients and the skill that goes into making it, as it should be. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

I don't know whether to praise or insult this place. The food was very expense but done before I could pay for it. Very spicy for a medium request but not spicy enough to be considered hot. The portion was huge but very little chicken to be considered a chicken dish. I am told that I have never tasted true Thai food before but I hope this is not considered true Thai because it was one of the lesser quality I have ever had. It was about what I expected from reading other reviews but I know I have had better.
