I visited Sy Thai Cafe today. The service was great. I especially enjoyed the crab cheese and Pad Gai. My only complaint was the curry red snapper. The fish was fried and smothered in a sauce that had the consistency of water. The texture was ruined and the bite of fish I did have was tough. I was told by management that there was nothing they could do and that I should've expected the dish to be soggy. read more

Tried it today for first time and was a nice surprise. The lady waiter was very friendly and attentively. We were with our two kids and we ordered 2 kids menus (satay with rice and chicken rice), both comes with fountain drinks. As starters, we ordered an appetizer platter with little bit of everything and it was quite good. The main dishes were green curry with eggplants, squid and green peppers (very very good) and Pad Thai (good but little bit too much liquid). Overall, good place, friendly service and good price. I use to love coming here, I decided to come back since it has been a while.. for the most part it is still delicious.. I was disappointed in the shrimp chips.. not as crispy as they should be.. usually the basket is gone but there were left overs. The masuman.. they added a LOT of potatoes so much so that you couldn't see the chicken! The pad Thai was delicious as well as the fried rice-the pineapple was a nice touch! Sweet and sour chicken was good as well! Crispy roll was not my favorite. Crispy shrimp was good.. I liked the dipping sauce that came with it! read more

SIGH Thai - SO Disappointing. I figured I'd take advantage of GrubHub and SyThai. The driver dropped off a rice dish. Too bad that's not what I ordered and I didn't realize until he drove away. So I called Sy Thai and they told me the driver must have picked up the wrong order. Call GrubHub. So I called the GrubHub driver and he told me they hand him the order. So much for service. Somehow I believe the driver... Thank goodness for American Express. I called them and they flagged the account. They'll remove the charges. At least Sy Thai could have made it right. Food was below average: vegetables were not fresh, they seemed to use mostly canned vegetables like mini corn and water chestnuts. Their "brown sauce" is not good, literally tastes like watered down teriyaki sauce. Service was lacking: we tried to get a waiters attention for 10 minutes to get a water refill. No one could ever compare to my beloved little Thai restaurant! I searched far and wide throughout the Chicagoland area for a place that could compare to you, but secretly, I was hoping that I wouldn't find another love like yours. I was so loyal, so faithful! Does that mean anything to you, Sy Thai? I wish I could say I found someone else, someone who could replace your spot in my heart, but I can't. What I can say is that I will never desire to see you again. You took my heart and crushed it to pieces today, and I just can't afford to go back. I deserve better than this. It started off with your new menu. I looked at it and was instantly impressed with the new sleek look and added dishes. It was clear that you were trying hard to make yourself seem attractive -- maybe to get the glances from others? I just don't know. You worried me from the start... When the soup came, it was so different from the so many bowls we've shared -- more gelatinous, less delicious, no tofu or mushrooms in sight. It was just rice soup. Soup, with only rice! Your old recipe was delicious! This new stuff, it was just a disgrace. So embarrassing! I told so many of my friends about your wonderful soup concoction, and you turn it into this! This should have been a sign for what was to come, but I was hoping that it was just an off day for you, Sy Thai. I really prayed that we were just going through a temporary spell, a rough patch for only a while. Then, Sy Thai, your waitress SPILLED WATER ON ME. An entire glass! And she didn't apologize! She just handed me a stack of napkins with me left to clean up the mess. The water was everywhere -- on the table, on my seat, and worst of all, almost all of it ended up in my purse. At the end of my meal, I was still pulling ice cubes out of it. I couldn't believe it, Sy Thai, that after all of my effort and love, you just throw water on me like I'm a really dry house plant that hasn't seen a drop of it in weeks. The greatest sin of all, Sy Thai, was the "revamped" chicken pad thai. Physically, it looked different; certainly, a nose job or a face lift, but I couldn't pinpoint what you did. It's clear that you tried to spruce yourself up a bit, but Sy Thai, you need to embrace who you are, an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," kind of thing. The noodles just tasted off. The flavor wasn't the same. It was, almost, bad. I just don't know, Sy Thai. The spice wasn't eye watering like it used to be. This was my dish that I looked forward to every time I made a trip back home, and I can't even rely on this anymore. Why did you have to change, Sy Thai? Change isn't always for the better. So, Sy Thai, I think it's about time we separated for awhile, to check to see what else is out there. Maybe you are going through a quarter-to-mid-life crisis; maybe I just need a new guy. I just wanted to make everyone aware that I picked up some carryout from what was my favorite Thai restaurant, Sy Thai this past Fri the 23rd. It's now almost 5 days later and I'm just now starting to recover from food poisoning I experienced about 2 hours after eating the carryout. I ate the carryout within about 30 mins of driving home. I've had food poisoning once before in the past so I know the symptoms. I got diarrhea and vomited multiple times Friday night. Then chills followed by lots more diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Great times. I've contacted the Oakland County Health Dept. about this as well. I'll never go to this restaurant again and just wanted to warn everyone here on yelp about my experience. UPDATE: Oakland Co. Health Division performed a routine inspection of Sy Thai in B'ham on 12/1/08 and had a two-time repeat of food cross contamination critical violation. They also found a five time repeat of soiled equipment violations. Then on a follow-up visit on 12/11/08 two additional new critical violations and also one new non-critical violation were found. The report also mentions two repeat violations were not corrected as well. There's also more from May and June '08. Examples of some of these critical violations: 1) Raw shell eggs stored next to cooked chicken. 2) Cooked tofu found at 80F and cooked shrimp found at 60F when should have been stored at 41F or below. 3) Jug of unapproved pesticide in mop room. My wife and I love this place. We were introduced by good friends of ours that live very close to Sy Thai, and now we're addicts! Their 'fresh rolls' are phenomenal (veggie), ..we get them every time! My wife loves the Curry Noodle, I love Fried Rice #3. There are other great dishes, but these are our favs, easily. The reason Sy Thai doesn't get 5 stars from us ... the owner (I think she's the owner). Non-Asian, dark hair, you'll see her, and you'll remember her too, because shes the ONLY one in the restaurant that won't smile! The staff is tremendous, but she is a complete 'downer'. I don't know the woman, but anyone who does not can ONLY assume that she is mean. You bring your bill up to the counter, she just takes it, runs your card, give you your receipt, never says anything, and is always completely stoic! I know every Asian place (especially Thai places) have their specialties, but this is one of the few places that I'd order pretty much anything off of the menu and be pretty confident that I would like it. Most other places, I have one dish in particular that I order at each place. My favorite at Sy Thai, as of late, is the Von Sen with fried tofu. It's bean thread noodles, egg, shallot, green onion and peapod and it's cooked in some sort of brown sauce, but it's not "saucy". Their Lettuce Wraps and Crispy Rolls are great appetizers, and I particularly like their curry dishes. The Curry Noodles are insanely good, but a little on the sweet side, and the Gang Keaw Warn is outstanding. I'd say my number two choice lately is the Sy's Fried Rice, which is your typical Thai fried rice, but it has curry powder, cashews and pineapple, along with some veggies (onions and tomatoes, I think). At lunch, you get the typical basket of shrimp chips (which I must admit have been pretty nasty the last few times I've been) and free soup. It's usually an onion soup, but every now and then it's hot and sour. The portions are huge for the price and I almost always get two meals of of it. While the wait stuff is perfectly pleasant and attentive, especially the boy with the great hair, I'm not a huge fan of the woman who appears to be a manager there. On more than one occasion, she has shown less than stellar customer service skills and one time was not going to let me use a coupon because it was Sweetest Day, and therefore a holiday. I fought her on it, arguing about the fact that Sweetest Day is not, in fact, a holiday, and after quite a few rounds, eventually won when I reminded her that (at the time) I was bringing in $100+ worth of carry-out orders from my work on a weekly basis. Waitress- 5 star friendly, engaging, prompt- yet not hanging over our shoulders Fresh rolls-( shrimp) 5 stars- FANTASTIC- fresh, perfectly constructed , served with a light - sweet sauce. I prefer peanut sauce. Cream-crab wontons- 3 a little over cooked. More cream cheese than imitation crab. Not bad, but I've had better. Chicken Penang - 4 the dish was perfect in flavors, heat and portion, but served with large chunked veggies and this was a turn off for hubs. Minimal sauce and chicken, but large chunks of potato , green peppers and carrot slices. I had the unique noodle dish ( forgot name..) last one one the noodle list- cilantro , peanuts, fettuccine type noodle, spicy sweet sauce/ pork 5 stars. It was very similar to pad Thai in flavor. The BEST Thai food in the Birmingham area. I love coming here for dinner with friends. The food is fantastic--they have a great variety of menu items, and everything is always fresh and delicious. They have excellent portion sizes (most times I have leftovers that are enough for lunch the next day!) and the price is hard to beat. The service is great, everyone is friendly and the food gets brought out very quickly. I also highly recommend going for lunch, it's a bargain! It's a great place to go for a date, or with friends/family. It can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, so be prepared to wait for a table. But it's definitely worth it! I go here quite often when I'm back in the hood visiting. I've tried their drunken noodles, pad Thai and their peanut curry. Their drunken noodles taste like noodles drunk in soy sauce-this is not what drunken noodles really are-drunken noodles are a no. The pad Thai is a no. It's basic! The peanut curry was pretty good-I had it with vegetables and it was delicious. The sauce is coconut milk curry....yum! But I'd have to say the best item is the curry noodles. I finally tried those after reading the reviews on them...and it's true! Probably one of the few good items on the menu! I feel for this place because I've seen it grow but I think its time is coming to an end...at least for me and a few others I see! I'd give it a 2.5-3 at best! I grabbed carry-out over my lunch break yesterday. The person who took my order was friendly and efficient. They gave me a 25-min. wait time (which is to be expected over lunch.) I wandered over and they had my order ready for me when I got there about 20 min. later. The transaction was quick and friendly. I always order Pad Thai with chicken and no bean sprouts (medium spice) whenever I order from a new place. I figure if you mess up Pad Thai the rest of your menu is probably going to suck. I really didn't have anything to worry about here. The noodles were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of sauce. The spice level gave it a building heat that added to the flavor instead of distracting from it. The ingredients seemed fresh and even though I didn't eat it as soon as it was prepared, it still tasted great. I will definitely give this shop another go. I hope to dine-in soon! read more

I just had Sy Thai for the first time...my girl brought carry out home for us, so I haven't been to their actual location to dine. But the food she picked up was wonderful!. We both ordered the Peanut Curry, mine with chicken and hers with extra veggies along with the crispy rolls to try as an app. I asked for the curry as hot as possible but unfortunately they missed the memo since I didn't get any heat whatsoever....it didn't matter. The dish was unbelievably crave worthy and definitely a new fav for me. What I loved about it was the thin sliced chicken, the blanched crispy cabbage and all the veggies bathing in that amazing peanut coconut curry sauce that was so good it was simply ridiculous. I have to figure out how to make this recipe for myself! The crispy rolls were also a crave worthy addition to the meal. Served alongside a simple sweet vinegar dipping sauce similar to a plum sauce, they were crispy and the filling was meaty with a healthy dose of veggie and cilantro that made these taste amazingly fresh despite losing their actual crisp in transport. I will definitely return to try a few other items but this is the best Thai that I've personally had to date. read more

Sy Thai is my go to Thai place. I really love the fresh rolls and the lettuce wraps. I mean, REALLY love them. Sometimes i get just those two things and it's more than enough. Other favorites are the chicken pad Thai, Pa Nang and drunken noodles. Terrible. I've eaten her over a dozen times in the past 5-6 years and it's usually decent (2-3 stars) but after my last visit/take out I will not be going back and I will no longer recommend it. As a matter of fact, I will tell people to avoid it. The staff has been rude the majority of the time but it's not high-end and usually pretty efficient so it's been easy to over look (especially at an average of 2x per year). My wife and I typically argue about where to order our Thai food from - she's a Bangkok person I'm a Sy Thai person. Not any more. We placed a carry-out order for two relatively simple dishes, Pad Thai and Pad Prik (w/ broccoli) with an order of spring rolls. We got the stuff home and the Pad Prik is not - it's another dish (or a mystery dish). So my wife calls, the woman either couldn't understand her inquiry or simply dismissed her with "you get right dish" and hangs up on her. Clearly there was no offer to correct the problem. So what could we do, we didn't want to make another trek out so I eat my Pad Thai, which must have had saline in it because I was sick for 24 hours. All the way around, this meal sucked. Sy Thai - you suck. For anyone looking for Thai food in the Birmingham area, try New Bangkok or Siam Spicy (South on Woodward). There are other spots a bit further. read more

WOW!!! (Just might be my new fav Thai in MI...) It a charming little (very busy) restaurant on Hamilton in downtown Birmingham. Our order consisted of the fresh rolls, Sy's Friend Rice (with tofu) & Drunken Noodles (with chicken.) The ingredients were extremely fresh and the dishes were inviting to the eye and taste buds. Two things everyone should know: 1) The portions are HUGE, splits are definitely appropriate otherwise be prepared for your take home to last another two meals. 2) Be conservative with the spice factor, I had no problem with their interpretation of medium however if you're sensitive stick to mild. Our server was very kind, patient and knowledgeable. They were 'Jonny on the Spot' with the water refills. And I love the shrimp chips that they give as an appetizer. I also tried the Drunken noodles which wasn't very good--there was something missing but I couldn't place what it was. This is an initial review after only being at Sy Thai once, but it's worth writing about. In a passionate desire to help our yet unborn child along, my wife and I went to Sy Thai hoping the spicy coaxing of a bit of Thai food would do the trick. As it turns, out, she seems to have grown immune to spices...baby likes. Either way, the recommendation from the receptionist at our Dr's office was on the spot...this was great Thai. We started with an order of spring rolls. I love spring rolls, and these were great. The sweet plum sauce was a bit fruitier than other sauces I've had. This was welcome. My wife enjoyed some delicious hot tea, while i prepared by consuming large amounts of water...readying myself for the coming pain...oh, how I love the pain. The main courses came. My go-to order when hitting a Thai restaurant is always Gang Gai. I love the delicious savory chicken and vegetables against the sweet curried coconut milk. When done well, medium-plus or hot it's divine. When done poorly, it's a harbinger of things to come. this was not done poorly. It had ample vegetables cooked to a perfect crunch. There was an excess of bamboo which always makes me happy. The spice was a bit of a let-down but only because I was told that it was on the spicy side...i always go less and work my way up. it was no issue. I bit more pepper and we were in business. The portion size was excellent...not to much, but certainly enough for lunch the next day! My wife had Pad Thai...another good litmus test. It was wonderful as well. The chicken Pad Thai was garnished with a lime instead of a lemon. This was unique and gave it a more cutting citrus flavor. We both really enjoyed it. The Pad Thai was certainly not over-spiced. if you like it hot, order it as such. Medium did not offer the kick I was expecting...nor that the baby needed! The flavor was on point and the perfect blend of salty peanut and fish oil and delicious and sweet Thai pepper. It was awesome, exactly what was expected. The small store front doesn't seat many, but it's good for lunch or an early dinner (as we had) when it wasn't busy. Though this is a bit further than some of our local Ferndale and Royal Oak Thai places, it's well worth the drive. We enjoyed this very much, and will be back! read more

Negatives: It's Birmingham, so the prices aren't low, and to accomodate the "local" tastes, there are a lot of things on the menu that aren't exactly what one would consider classically Thai - Udon noodles, crab rangoon, and so on. Positives: The people are very friendly, and the actual Thai food is surprisingly good by Birmingham standards. Minus driving up to Thai Taste in Troy, or down to Sunny Thai in Madison Heights, or ranging even further away, this is probably your best bet in this area of Oakland County. The drunken noodles, basil fried rice, kow pad, and all the other normal stand-bys are better here than you'll find at basically all of the nearby competitors, at least in my mind. read more

We ate at Sy Thai Cafe this evening before wandering over to see a movie. The food was excellent, the service was fast and the waiter was engaging yet efficient at taking the order and checking back to see if we needed anything further. We were a bit nervous that we would be late to the movie but made it with plenty of time to spare. Being big fans of good Thai food, we are somewhat critical if a restaurant doesn't measure up. I really like this place, my sister and I go all the time whenever I'm home in detroit ( I live in Phoenix now, which is a blackhole of good food aside from Mexican). It's really well priced like what does it run like 6.50 an entree at lunch? The people are really nice, like they are never annoyed when my crazy sister doesn't want this, but wants that, over rice noodles. My sister is always trying to order something at a restaurant then change 433423848 things about it, and they are totally down with it. Good service is hard to find among Asian joints ( it's okay I'm asian I can say very racist things like this). I like the vegetable curry, the crispy rolls, drunken noodles, basil... wait i've liked everything I tried here. As usual, I had my standard Pad Se-Ew (Tofu, Medium) at Sy Thai. It was definitely passable, but I'd still stick to Bangkok Cuisine in Rochester, given my choice. Having recently gone to Hong Kong, I'm really sad to report that all of my favorite dishes actually aren't served in Hong Kong. Turns out Pad Se-Ew isn't so authentic, so I'll be looking for some more traditional choices when I get back, at Sy Thai or elsewhere! read more
