We are new to Newport drove down by the harbor and thought it was pretty trashy. Happened to be near Yaquina Head Lighthouse and had good vibes on this place. The dinner was fantastic food quality was way above average service was fun we sat at the bar and the prices are super reasonable for what you get. After driving around by the harbor and at Nye Beach this would be the only restaurant I would recommend trying for dinner. read more

My favorite is Ribeye Tuesdays and you'll need reservations for the sell our crowd event. Mark Szabo is always there with sleeves rolled up and working every time I've eaten there, which is atleast 20 times in the last year. For breakfast, I just love the Popeye Omellete and really, I have half of it left over for later and that is saying something because I am a big man. I took my 75 year old mother there, and much to my surprise, she ALONE polished off the area's best mile high mud pie. She's a tiny little think and I kid you not, the slice of mud pie was a good 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Usually my wife and I share it with another friend. It a wonderful place to consider with the best restaurant staff I've seen anywhere here on the coast. Consistently wonderful food in a very casual, go-as-you-are atmospehere. Our resort recommended this place as their "featured restaurant of the week" so we gave it a shot. The name should be changed to Szabo's Tavern. Certainly has the ambiance of a biker bar. The night we ate here, it was slow (and a little early, perhaps) and we were seated in a booth across from the bar with a couple of big screens displaying sports. The waitstaff consisted of a couple of tattooed 30 or 40 something women dressed in black. They were friendly enough and the service was OK. The salads looked and tasted like they were fresh - out of a bag. My lady had King Crab and I went for the Prime Rib. Portions were nicely sized, but there just wasn't any flavor. My wife grabbed the salt shaker, held it up and said she needed to introduce Mr. Salt to the "chef". I'm not against eating a meal in a bar and have had some great bar food, but I was a little surprised from the name to find it a bar, and IMHO, this place doesn't rank well for bar food establishments either. read more

My husband and I live on the coast and have driven past Szabo's dozens of time, always curious to pop in and try the food. Tonight we decided to stop in, but early into the meal, wished he had just kept driving. First of all I will say that the one star rating was generous, and really only covered the beer and the background music. My husband ordered the New York steak ( although cooked to order was a tough and gristly piece of meat.) twice baked potato that had been left under a heat lamp for far too long, and veggies that I would just as soon not discuss. I ordered the Parmesan incrusted Halibut ( the fish was overcooked and coated in a soggy breading and smothered in a clunky cheddar cheese sauce, no parmesan to be found) fries that were nice and crispy on the outside and yet partly frozen still on the inside, and the same veggies that I still don't want to talk about. When the server finally got around to checking on us and ask as to how our meals were I very nicely told her I didn't like my fish and why. She simply said " oh maybe I will suggest the cooks serve the sauce on the side next time."As she cleared our plates she could clearly see that I hadn't even eaten most of my meal. She made absolutely no attempt to resolve anything. We would have told the manager about her had she told us her name when she sat us. After having such a lousy dining experience here we wondered if it was coincidence that our server had decided to remain anonymous. Not only will we not be returning to this restaurant again, we won't be suggesting it to anyone we know either. read more

WOW! Talk about disappointment. Ordered the 8oz. prime rib med. rare and when I got it, it was sliced in two very, very thin pieces and sure was not med. rare. It was like deli sliced for a French dip sandwich. When I ask about it was told some stupid answer about hum! never noticed. Do not waste your time or your money by going here. It stinks. Called the owner when we got home from our trip a week later and told him about it. He was as about as rude as anyone could be and could have cared less. He honestly was a jerk about it. My boyfriend and I found Szabo's when we were in Newport. We ate there 3 times. The first night, I believe it was a Tuesday, their special was a 16oz rib-eye. We both ordered that. I ordered mine medium-rare and my boyfriend ordered him medium-well. Bother were cooked very well. I also ordered a 1/2 lb side of crab legs for us to share. Everything we ate was delicious and we were way too full to even attempt a dessert. The next morning, we stopped for breakfast before going to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse (practically across the street). I ordered the crab cake breakfast with scrambled eggs and potatoes and my bf ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast with eggs and potatoes. I didn't care for the crab cakes, they seemed very dry to me, the eggs were pretty typical but the potatoes were very very good. My boyfriend, who does not like onions, at every last drop of the potatoes (including onions) without even blinking. He also really loved his chicken fried steak. Also, the toast, I believe it was a hazelnut toast, was amazing. Between the two of us, we ate 8 pieces of toast. We also stopped at Szabo's Thursday night. My boyfriend had the rib-eye again and I ordered the baby back ribs. I already had a stomach ache that day and I wasn't loving the thick, sticky regular bbq sauce on my ribs and the first time they brought out my bf's steak, it was way under done. When he pointed it out, the waitress took it right back to the kitchen and brought it back within a few minutes. Overall, the waitresses were very, very friendly. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere without feeling uptight or uncomfortable. It was one of the few places we felt comfortable talking about a whisper and laughing out loud. We enjoyed Szabo's very much and would likely go back if we were ever in Newport again. read more

Stopped in because I was really craving some dead cow, and it was the only steakhouse in town. I chose the 16oz Ribeye because the biggest Prime Rib was a mere 12oz :( It was cooked perfectly at medium rare, because it's sacrilege to cook beef any other way. It was a decent cut, seasoned fairly well and actually grilled (you could taste it). My fiance had the fish and chips and they actually have them in different varieties (cod, halibut, salmon). It was cooked well and not greasy. One other thing I noted was that the dinner salads while not fancy, actually had enough dressing to coat the lettuce! In a world of hippies who choose to douse their greens in barely enough dressing to coat the top of the salad, this was a welcome sight. Well done! Went to the coast for my boyfriends birthday. Saw the sign on the way back to the hotel and it got us hungry for steak/bbq. When we entered the establishment there was a sign saying please wait to be seated. Well we waited for 2-3 mintues and no one greeted us, although the woman behind the bar clearly saw us and so did the other waitress. We ended up seating ourselves, the table was sticky. We sat for close to 5 mintues and no one came to give us menus or welcome us. The waitstaff just continued chatting away with bar patrons. We had to get up and ask for the menus ourselves. My boyfriend ordered the 11 oz ribeye and I ordered the 7oz bbq chicken entree. His steak came out covered in charchol marks from the grill. Overly cooked one side and under cooked on the other. It tasted as if you had licked the bottom of a grill that hadn't been cleaned in over a year. My chicken was bone dry, so dry that the knive did not even cut into. I had to rip it apart with my hands and fork, when I took a bite I nearly choked on the dryness. I could barely even swallow. The mixed veggies that came with both meals were a complete random mix of things. It seems as if they had taken every spare veggie they had that was close to being bad and tossed it together. They were not consistent in thier cooking, as some were over cooked and complete mush and some were still hard/raw. The side dishes were luke warm at best. Our waitress did not come to check on us once. She continued to chat it up with a single bar patron. When I made obvious glances her way trying to signal that we needed drink refills she moved her body behind a woodem support beam so as to block us from her view. We had to get up and walk to the bar to ask for drink refills. When paying over $15+ per meal I expect to have good food, this food was terrible. How does a steak house screw up a steak and bbq chicken? This was the worst service I have ever received in any single establishment, and I tend to eat out at least 2 times per week. I would never return nor reccomend this place to anyone I know. read more

Run from this place. My husband and I are not from this area and decided to stop by here for dinner, It looked a little run down from the outside, but there were a lot of cars here, so I figured it was fine. It started with my soup. The clam chowder was only slightly warm. My concern is that soup must be heated to a certain temperature to avoid food poisoning, so it should be nice and hot. The real problem though was the prime rib that I ordered well done. It was raw and not even edible. Yes, it was not cooked and raw throughout the middle. I mentioned it to the waitress and she agreed. She took it and about five minutes later I got the same piece back. It appeared darker, but the middle was still raw. I tried to eat the edges, but it was gross to say the least. Although I was given a to go box, I threw it away at our hotel. Great place! TVs everywhere to watch any game you want & staff was very accommodating re: switching channel, turning up volume, etc. Service was excellent. We used to like this place. The food has always been - ok. The staff has always been very nice and that's why we kept returning,. Today this big jack ass in a Payton 34 jersey served us (kind of - well, he threw the menu at us and then threw the food in our direction). He was clearly very unhappy to be working. I doubt he's the owner, but if he is, he needs to sell and move on. Whoever is the owner needs to send him on his way. I'm guessing it would be very difficult for him to find another job because of his attitude and obesity. But he's not helping this business. As usual, the food was - ok. The food was fresh and delicious. The fried shrimp, halibut, clam chowder we piping hot when served, but it took a long time to get served. The daily specials are a great deal. We have stopped here two times while out on a beach day spyder ride. We Enjoy the atmosphere greatly. The food is normally good, the only complaint was a medium rare burger being burnt. My wife and I went to Szabo's on Sept. 4th, because we like steak houses. We were seated immediately and then everything went downhill fast. We were given filthy menus which is always a warning for me. It took about 10 minutes for a waitress to come over and ask for our drink order. We each ordered a beer, and they came in glasses marked Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers. I had the Beaver glass and my wife jokingly asked why she had to have the Oregon Duck glass. She asked this with a smile on her face and obviously joking. The waitress frowned threw up her arms and said "I don't need this". My wife said she was sorry and was joking. We gave our food order and that was the last time the waitress spoke to my wife. I ordered chicken noodle soup (soup of the day), and my wife ordered clam chowder. My soup had two small pieces of chicken, and the rest was vegetables. My wife could only find a few tiny pieces of clam. The main orders arrived. I had ordered a Rib Eye steak, cooked Medium. I received a very thin piece of meet that was still bloody upon arrival. My wife ordered ribs which were not good. The sauce was a thin pizza like sauce, and her potato was cold. I had ordered butter only with my potato, and received six small containers that in the reduced lighting appeared to be margarine. We ate what dinner we could, and asked for our bill. My wife presented her credit card, and the waitress returned it to me; again ignoring my wife. All in all, a very unsatisfactory waitress, food and overall service. I will not recommend this restaurant and will not return to eat. read more

I'd give it 0 stars if I could. Ordered the 12 oz prime rib dinner with a salad and rice pilaf. Salad comes and it's smothered in the house made blue cheese dressing, which was horrible! Dinner comes and it looks good so I'm thinking things are about to redeem themselves after the horrible salad, NOPE! The rice pilaf was soggy and bland. The meat was flavorless, the au jus was as if they had just poured the fat drippings into a dish and served it with no flavor as well. Waitress comes over and asks how the food is and I explained to her that it was flavorless and she swears that she's never heard that before and takes my plate back to get it corrected. What happens next is tragic! Instead of admitting that there's no way to fix flavorless prime rib at this point in the evening, they cut another end cut, put rub on it, then grill it to my requested soreness and serve it. At this point I tell the waitress that we're done here and we'll pay for our drinks and appetizer. The waitress sends the manager over with a check for $25 saying that we had to pay for part of the food we didn't eat, which was all of it anyways. This place shouldn't call themselves a steakhouse and they shouldn't be in business! Horrible, horrible, horrible! read more

My aunt and uncle told me about this place and said they had great steaks. I have been wanting to go there for a while. My wife and I finally had another trip to the beach to try it out. We almost left after we walked in the door. Definitely a dive bar. We decided to give it a shot. 6:00 arrived and sat down. 6:10pm... ordered our food. Within 10 minutes we got our water, Sierra Mist and clam chowder. 6:40 our waitress came by and refilled my wife's water and tries to pour water in my Soda. I asked for another Sierra Mist. 7:05 our food finally arrives. 1 lb Crab had long hard tendons in it and wasn't cooked all the way. I could be wrong, but the smaller legs tasted tolerable but the bigger ones were tough and chewy. The butter tasted like popcorn butter from the movie theatre. 7:30... We had to flag down a waitress to get our check. She asked how the food was. We said it was pretty bad. She offered to reimburse us for the crab but we just wanted to pay the bill and get the hell out of there.... After being there for over an hour and a half and Since our waitress gave us 1 refill and we had to flag her down when we needed anything we thought a $1.00 tip was good enough. $53.00 bill... Came home and my wife wasn't feeling good. Not necessarily food poisoning, but if you ate crap all night, you would few nauseous too... Best Part... Call the restaurant. Waitress answered and said there was no manager on duty and no owner present. She would call the manager at home. I got a call back from someone claiming to be a manager. She said they are unable to take off the crab because we already left. (I offered to go back). She then said she was the manager on duty when we were there... But then why did the waitress tell me on the phone that no manager was there?? (Side note- when I called the number back, it was her cell. Her voicemail say "Hey peeps, don't leave me a message because you should know I won't listen to it. Text me or snapchat me.") very classy. :) So they are either too stupid to know who their manager is or they want to just lie to people and tell them no manager on duty when a customer has a complaint. I don't need my money back and I will just chalk it up to a crappy dinner. Trashy restaurant, horrible food, and stupid/ignorant staff. If other people decide to eat there, their standards must be a hell of a lot lower than ours. read more
