Came in last night about 9:30 PM to get a bowl of clam chowder and beers which was going to be our dinner. The bartender on swing has absolutely zero service skills and even less of a personality. She took care of the people already at the bar as I waited patiently and when she was good and ready, she walked over and just stood there and looked at me. No hello, can I get you anything, and never acknowledged me as I was standing there waiting for her to take care of other customers which is just simple customer service. Gave my son an attitude while looking at his ID, acted like she was just bothered by us as obviously we are not familiar faces. But on our way back home to Las Vegas where we are Both in the service industry. I lived in Newport from 1974 to 1990... The Sandbar used to be one of those great local dive bars--gritty, familiar, full of memories. I've been going since I was barely old enough to get in. So many nights there, it practically feels like part of my coming-of-age story. I recently lost my mom, and while staying in Nye Beach last week, I wanted to revisit some of those old memories. I ordered a double, played some video poker, took a walk down to the beach to breathe and reflect. Pretty harmless stuff, right? Came back, sat down, asked for a second drink... and the bartender--a young woman with the warmth of a DMV rejection letter--looked at me like I'd just kicked her dog, she muttered: "I'll give you a water." No explanation. No kindness. No "hey, we're cutting off for your safety" or "just trying to keep it mellow tonight." Just attitude. Straight-up condescension. I wasn't stumbling, slurring, or being disruptive. I was grieving. Quietly. Respectfully. Alone. Who is this angry gatekeeper of the Sandbar? If you don't want to serve locals or folks looking for some nostalgia, just hang a sign that says "No Heartfelt Moments Allowed." I came for some peace. Instead, I got judged and shut down by someone who clearly hates her job, or maybe just hates people. Either way, this experience left a really bad taste in my mouth--and it wasn't from the drink. whoever you have working bartender during the day the service is horrible. I understand it's one man pouring drinks but the service is slow and rude. We came with our family as we are here for a family reunion (20plus) and as minors were allowed we thought we could enjoy the spot... but when our son (2.5) had one minor meltdown about water he asked my husband to "calm our fucking kids down". We were there trying to handle the situation and did as we took him out of the restaurant. When i asked why he would say such a thing he basically accused us of being horrible parents. This place is very clean, roomy, and the food was excellent! I ordered the fish and chips and my husband ordered the club. I substitute the fries for a cup of chowder. Chowder was very good. The bartender was Awesome and we will come back again when we come back! read more

If you are on the lookout for bar food, come on in. That is what you are going to get. We only came here for lunch because everywhere else in a 2 block radius had a 45-60 minute wait. There was no wait at all here. We walked in and I asked the bartender "do we just seat oursevles?", to which she responded "I will go get someone". I thought she was going to fetch another employee to seat us, but instead she came back a few minutes later wondering why we were still standing at the bar. She told us to seat ourselves. Haha, okay. I got a club sandwich and fries. Actually all 4 of us got fries with our lunch. She brought out 4 packets of ketchup, the little ones you get at burger king, and other fast food places. She said they ran out of bottled ketchup, but she brought us more of the small packets. I thought it was strange that she brought out all the food separately. I got mine first, and my friends say there and watched me eat. I was our driver, so I just ordered water. I drank mine, and instead of getting a refill, I had to steal my friend's water, which he gladly gave up. My sandwich was sort of awful. It tasted like it was mostly bread, tomato, and condiments. I didn't get much in the way of bacon or turkey meat. One girl was running the whole place. She was nice, but just not organized. The music in that place is loud and horrid. Overall, I get it. Its primary purpose is to be a dive bar to hang out on a Saturday night. It's not where you should go to have a nice meal. Even still, I have had better experiences at other bars. We only came here because we were incredibly hungry, but I won't eat here again. read more

This is a dive bar as everyone else has stated. I am definitely not above going to dive bars. Some times some of the best food is at the dive bars. Once in a while they are the hidden gems. I was hoping to find that here because I have seen this place with lines out the door. My guy ordered me a lemon drop, the whole while I tried drinking it I wished he had ordered me a soda, or something else. I would have even drank a PBR. I felt bad because the the bartender you could tell was really slammed, and he was working hard to please everyone. We both ordered the Parmesan halibut, which came with a salad, and your choice of baked potato, or rice pilaf...and my guy and I both read on the menu comes with a mini loaf of bread...I will get back to this! Our salad came out, they were very delicious. I had the bay shrimp added to mine. I was so far impressed. While we were consuming our salads the bartender sat a mini loaf of bread, with a single serving of butter in front of my guy...not in the center of the table(like one would do if it was for sharing) so my guy ate it because we both thought my mini loaf was coming after I was done with my salad. So when my salad dish was cleared I asked about it. We were told no, that mini loaf was for the 2 meals! Now, I think the menu needs to clarify that when paying for 2 meals you are splitting a mini loaf, rather than having it with a whole meal! Because it says under the meals, where your options are for soup, or salad, and baked potato or rice pilaf, you also get a mini bread loaf! When the parmesan halibut arrived, I was a little confused. I had never in my life seen it prepared the way it was. I almost thought it was a joke. The halibut itself was good. The thing that was off putting was the fact they had put marinara sauce on top of it. It was like they opened a jar of ragu, and dumped it on, and thought that was great. The thought that crossed my mind was this needs that bar rescue show where they revamp the menu. Because someone obviously thinks this is great, when it is not! How can this be on the menu? Scrap the fake marinara, and just use panko, and Parmesan like the rest of the best. I ate it because like I said, the fish wasn't bad. I just had to scrape the sauce off of the top. During my time here I went into the rest room which was a single stall. There was no lock. I certainly was uncomfortable being in there feeling like I had to be on guard the whole time. Then in walks some one, I can hear a woman to which a say I'm in here, there is no lock on the doors. She says "oh, I know!" Wow! Why are they not fixing this issue? I mean I get that this is a dive bar! But come on! The atmosphere was okay. Looks like it would be okay to watch games if we were out of town, and there was no where else. The music that was being played wasn't bad. I hope they truly revamp that Parmesan halibut. Especially for them charging $20!! I would rather pay that at Georgie's down the road, or some where else that has better food for that price! I almost forgot to add, we later ordered a coke because my drink was not okay. They fill the glasses so full of ice that you can maybe get 3 drinks in! I asked my guy were we getting charged for refills? I don't think we were, but why over fill the glasses with ice! This is alittle hole in the wall type of thing. It looks alittle rough. But I promise the people are great, and the food and drink are even better! We came in for dinner and drinks, and were not disappointed. The burger was the best burger I ate on this trip, and the drinks were spot on. We stumbled upon this restaurant tonight and were pleasantly surprised! I had the atmosphere of a dive bar but wait until you try their food! They had a Filet Mignon special for $10.95 so we took a chance on it.....superb! AND their Clam Chowder was the best we've had on the Oregon coast, not kidding. read more

Ate here last night (11/9/2021) for the first time since the pandemic began. I have been frequenting this establishment on and off for literally 40 years. Back in the 80's they had absolutely delicious chicken and JoJos. For the past few years (minus the pandemic) we were eating here several times a month, even though the upstairs dining area was rather grubby, the food was good and their specials were priced nicely. The business has sold since the pandemic began and they were closed on and off during the past 2 years because of the virus. The new owners have closed the upstairs dining area and remodeled the bar, adding a pool-table to the back room and several large screen TV's. It now has a bit of the sports bar feel. Their prices are higher, the service is slower and the food is not great. We did not purchase drinks because we only drink water with meals. We could not get a refill on our waters and had to go up to the bar to complain and request the bill. There were only a few people in the entire bar and at times they were 3 women and 1 man behind the bar, so service should not have been so slow. Our medium rare steak was tough and horribly overcooked. The salad onions and lettuce was old and wilted to the point of being slimy, as you can see from the photo. When you pick up an onion it shouldn't flop over limp because it is so old and wilted, it should maintain its shape and be stiff and crisp. The rest of the food was edible but nothing special and definitely overpriced for the quality of the food and service. I complained about my over cooked, tough steak. It was nothing even close to medium-rare. I was not offered anything more than an "Im sorry" and they walked off. I did not even have a chance to tell them about my limp onions, wilted lettuce or the rotten lettuce in my salad! The salad dressing was not good and it was less tolerable because it tasted like it had been open in the refrigerator a while. We never saw a drink menu so we have no idea what they serve for alcoholic beverages or the prices of those beverages, they may only serve beer, for all we know. I gave them two stars only because they remodeled and it's cleaner than it used to be, but we will not be back because we are not going to pay for bad food twice. They should have listened to our complaints and, at the very least, discounted our meal, if not completely remade the salad & steak, but they offered NOTHING. If you are looking for a place to get a beer or watch a football game I would highly recommend the Sandbar. During the summer it can get pretty crowded and loud and it is a favorite late night bar so expect things to get busy and loud as the evening progresses and other bars close down. I also believe this is a bar that allows dogs after they stop serving food which is kind of fun. I would however double check with the bar tender before bringing a dog in, I don't know their actual policy only that I have seen dogs in there after food stops being served. If you are looking for a place to sit down and have a meal with a group I would suggest looking elsewhere. I have always found the burgers to be satisfactory but this bar isn't set up for groups. The last time I was there with about 7 people. Despite everyone not all showing up at the same time the person taking our order wanted to get everyone's order at the same time and then said it was impossible to split the check and wouldn't allow us to pay with multiple cards. read more

I went here with a group and sat upstairs for lunch on a Saturday. First, let me say that the service was outstanding. Five stars for her having to run up and down stairs for food/drink for a group of 8. I ordered oysters on the half shell and got food poisoning from them. Our group had been eating the same foods during the weekend, except for me having oysters at Sandbar & Grill. I was the only one who got sick, so the oysters were the obvious culprit. This was such a fun place to go with a really friendly staff! We had excellent seafood with an ocean view and a tame seagull named Henry begging for French fries. My wife and love spending time in Newport every chance we get. We do love to try a lot of different restaurants, but this place, has to be the worst that we have come across. We stumbled across this place while with our family on a slightly rainy night a day before Valentine's Day. Originally we were headed for the Chowder bowl, but they were packed. We all were hungry and the kids really wanted to get out of the rain and the cold. The food was very sub-par. They were just getting ready to get into the dinner service when we came in, so we all just ordered some appetizers until they were ready. The oysters, not very fresh, the hot wings, very tiny but good flavor, the fries good and those were the best parts, the reason for the 2 stars. I could write a short book on what we tried, but all I can really say is, avoid at all cost unless you are looking for a dive bar, maybe things are better after you get a few drinks down you. read more

Best steamer clams EVER! Best people! Best place! We discovered this little local bar/restaurant during our stay in Newport. It's located in Nye Beach, which is a very short walk, either on the beach or on Elizabeth Street headed north from any of the ocean hotels in Newport that are located on the north side of the Yaquina bay bridge. (We were at The Hallmark, and it was less than a mile - about a 10 minute walk.) There is a bar and small restaurant area with a pool table on the lower level, and a dining area upstairs. Out of the six days that we were in Newport, we were here five.... either just for drinks or for drinks and appys.... more specifically... the AMAZING steamed clams! We did venture out and order a few other things from their happy hour menu... calamari, crab cakes, clam chowder.... none of which was anything spectacular. But the steamer clams are just absolutely amazing! We have had clams at many, many places on the west coast, and we have never had clams this good. They bring them in from Washington, and keep them alive in a large salt-water tank. They steam them in wine, butter and garlic. For those looking for an uppity, elegant dining experience... you will want to skip The Sandbar. For those looking for a totally chill place to meet some really nice people and have a few drinks, you can't miss this place! I have read some pretty negative reviews of The Sandbar, and it's really disappointing. This is a bar... not a 5 star restaurant, so comparing it as so, in my opinion, is not reasonable. This is a place you can go to unwind, have a few drinks, make friends with the bartender (Lindsey... you're the best and we can't wait to come back to see ya!) ANDDDDD have the best clams ever! The only reason I rated this 2 stars is the owner was standing out front of the bar saving a place to park for her husband or boyfriend. I would have thought that customers come first, apparently not at Bonny and Pauls Sandbar. The bartender Shaun is doing a great job, we are in the bar as I am writing this review. We love this place! Every time my husband and I are near Newport, we head here first. Gotta have a bucket of fresh steamers and some crab cakes (very affordably priced) and then see what else we are in the mood for. The fried fish and the shrimp are delicious. Not a fan of their veggies, but like the salads. We have tried some of the desserts and they are very good. If you want a very casual atmosphere and fresh seafood without fancy trimmings, this is the place. They also have an excellent wine list, beer list (Oregon micro-brews), and cocktails. The second floor eatery is reached by walking through the divey bar to a back staircase and then up to the dining room and outside terrace. If the weather is warm and dry, outside has the best view of the ocean. The dining room has an airy feel with brightly painted murals on the walls. It's a fun spot for friends, families, or couples. The steamer clams are the best I've ever had. HOWEVER, we waited 20 minutes before we saw the waitress to take our order. Another 20 to get water and one drink. She came back 3 times to retake our order during the hour before we got our food. Then she asked again if what she brought was actually what we had ordered. We could tell the food was not served right away as it was warm and the garlic butter had a crusty top from sitting. We believe she was high on something and would hang out at our table chatting when she delivered our food. She also brought water glasses out again as if we had not gotten them. The food is okay at best. Don't be fooled by the "bucket". It's filled with a spacer of 90% of the bucket. Just think of a normal plate of food. Server didn't seem to be able to keep things straight. Not sure we will be going back. read more
