I love Chinese dry pot or Mala Xiang Guo, especially those where you get to pick your ingredients and portion size. Before Big Hey, Portland proper only had 1 other option in NW near slab town. Big Hey had all the ingredients I would want and a decent assortment of flavors/styles to choose from. The only downside was the self serve sauce bar was a bit dirty. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Prices are aligned with other offerings and average overall. +1 that it's the same owners of Tasty Corner, which I'm a big fan of as well for Szechuan. I will definitely come back for my dry pot cravings.

My sister saw Big Hey Hot Pot on IG and sent me the reel so our group of 8 headed there on a windy cold December Sunday for lunch. Hot soup sounded amazing! The aesthetic is bright and modern with table settings in shiny gold and futuristic hexagon ceiling lights. The dining spaces are large, big tables to accommodate large parties like ours and also cozy two and four tops. I'd give decor a solid 4. You grab a bowl and start piling on your favorite meats, seafood and veggies. Their selection is off the charts and looks fresh. What I would've loved to see was "how to make a perfect bowl if you're a meat lover, a seafood fanatic or a vegetarian" - something like this would be great so you can gauge how much of anything to put in your bowl. The entire process took a few minutes and then you decide tour broth and spice level. I like spicy and chose medium but it was S-P-I-C-Y!! Not too spicy that I couldn't eat it but it has some heat. My sister ordered mild and ended up returning her bowl to switch to NO SPICE, that was great that she had that option. There is also a sauce bar which I loved - I'm a food dipper so anyone who likes condiments will love this. The metal chopsticks were super slick and I'm Asian lol. I kept mine but at least 3 others switched to forks half way through their meal. The brass chopsticks looked lux but not functional. They did provide huge broth spoons which were great and looked fun. They should also provide bibs at the table as the broth is a potential stain master! Don't wear your favorite cream cashmere sweater to Big Hey!! My soup had a good flavor profile despite the heat. I should've put in more meats and veggies. Now I know!! None of us finished our soup, so we had large to go containers which meant 1 or 2 extra meals. Pricing was fair $150 for 8 of us with some sodas. They do serve entrees and bubble tea so if soup is not your thing, they offer other options as well. The staff was beyond friendly!

My to-go canister...the portions are huge?

This place was an interesting experience with lots of potential. This review comes from sometime where this type of dining is outside my culture and wheelhouse. So what is obvious to some might not be to me. The dining area is very specious and modern and nice. I was impressed. I'd give that a 4. It was great for larger groups with lots of space. The staff were nice and friendly. The experience requires some instruction, and it's not super clear how the whole operation works. It requires some verbal instruction which is not conducive for a large group of 8 like ours as not everyone heard it as there was a lot going on. It took a bit to figure out that it was by weight. I also had no idea what I was getting into for cost, so I was a little conservative in my selection and wasn't sure what to pick to have the best experience. In hindsight, I wish I selected more meats. I wish there was a big and simple and obvious 1-2-3 step process map To better lead me down the path of a good selection. The time to get the food was quick as they add broth and cook it for you. It was very hot which was good as I knew it would not get too cold too fast. I didn't like the metal chopsticks. They are too "slick" to easily grab the slippery noodles. I would have preferred wood at least as an option. They do provide forks if desired. I switched to that midway through. SPICE WARNING: I was surprised how spicy my "mild" selection was. They have the option of None, Mild, Medium, Hot. I continued, but it was on the upper edge of what I enjoy. One of our party members actually had them change her broth from Mild to None as it was too spicy for her. I would have liked to have had broth samples of the spice levels to select from, particularly when this is the entire meal and not cheap. Kudos to them for swapping to no-spice broth! Well done! SPLASH ALERT!: My other dissatisfaction is that almost everyone on our party had some of their oily broth splash on their top which may lead to staining. With the slick noodles and broth, splashing is almost inevitable, even when really trying to be careful. I would like a recommendation of a paper bib or a warning or something to mitigate this risk. The water carafes are provided free at the tables which is excellent, particularly for the spice. Our bill for 8 was about $150 before tip with a few sodas added to the bowl-only meals. The portions are huge. All 8 of us took home enough for a second meal. This place is a cool experience. With some additional steps to improve for first-time guests it could help to improve the experience to increase the likelihood of a second visit.

Food: 3/5 I'm familiar with the self serve style of hot pot, and since I came in before the dinner rush, everything went pretty quick. The staff was friendly and walked me through the process. Start by grabbing a bowl, pick your ingredients, weigh them, choose a broth, pay, and then they'll bring the pot to your table. Lots of parking in front and in the back as well. The restaurant itself is open and spacious, easily accommodating large groups. The sauce bar is included but many of the containers were empty, which made it feel like it wasn't being refilled regularly. The ingredients bar had plenty of choices from fish balls, veggies and proteins. Some of them did not look the freshest ... And I just wish they offered more meat options especially beef because the only one available was the fatty cut. I got the tomato broth, and it was just okay. It leaned on the bland side for my taste. Everything was just alright not particularly memorable. Overall this wouldn't be my first choice for hot pot.

Hey, Portland Yelp Elites... what do you think of Big Hey Hot Pot?! This self-serve, pay-by-weight, Szechuan hot pot experience is a new model to Portland and I'm all about it! Many of you may know this location as Szechuan Chef Chinese Restaurant, but don't be mistaken - this is a whole new experience! In fact, the restaurant has been completely remodeled in a very bright, modern style with comfortable seating, and a lovely waiting area with benches and a bar. You can order alcoholic drinks, milk teas and more. So the concept is simple: Grab one of their big brass bowls and a pair of tongs and make your way to the brightly lighted bar full of hot pot ingredients. There are four or five different kind of noodles to choose from, as well as a wide assortment of meat and seafood options. I arrived an hour before closing on a Saturday night and their veggie options seemed a little light with mostly chrysanthemum greens, bean sprouts and lettuce. There were also slices of pumpkin. There is a wide variety of broth options, as well as a dry option. I opted for the Ma La Tang broth which I believe is a pork and chicken broth simmered to perfection with lots of spices and deliciousness. I absolutely loved the broth and didn't feel it was too salty or oily. I dialed the flavor up a notch with a visit to their sauce bar where I found things like scallions, cilantro, sesame oil, soy sauce and their housemade hot sauce. After turning in my bowl at the cash register (the contents of my bowl weighed 1.3 lbs and cost around $19 which I feel was more than fair) I only had to wait about 10 minutes for my food to arrive. The wait staff did a great job of checking in with us to see if we needed anything. Indeed, they were friendly and very responsive despite being exceptionally busy. The Thai tea was a little mediocre and the lighting is amped up to interrogation-level brightness (I may wear sunglasses inside next time I visit) but aside from that, I have no complaints. My husband and I are already planning our next visit, and curating what ingredients we'll prepare our soup with. It's four solid gold stars from me, folks! Let me know what you think.

We had a great experience! This was their 7th day open as a hot pot place. The atmosphere is clean and inviting. The service was outstanding. They walked us through the process and I love this concept because I have to be more thoughtful of my selection knowing I'm gonna pay per pound. After you're done selecting your ingredients, you choose a broth and pay. Then you choose a table, hit up the sauce station, and they'll bring out your bowl to you. I felt like I went a bit conservative knowing it wasn't AYCE but by the end I was so full. The wide rice noodles and squid were my highlights, but my whole bowl was delicious. Their Thai tea is good too!

This place, I am rating a five star because this has been the first time in all my PNW experience being serviced with humanity in an Asian establishment. The service went far beyond my expectations. On top of this being my first hot pot experience. Besides my broth being a little too oily this place was amazing. I just wish for sanitation purpose they had different tongs for different things. Regardless 10, 10, 10 all across the board

Second time here and I love it. The food selection doesn't have a huge variety, but it has all the things I like to eat! It's perfect when you're craving hot pot but don't want a super heavy meal. Love both the price and the food. Service was fast too! Definitely will keep coming back.

Got a decent amount of food for 1.2 lbs. Got the Hot and Spicy dry pot at $17/lb

Been seeing BHHP on social media a lot lately and while I'm skeptical of IG/TT influencers, I was excited to try it since I'm a slut for hot pot. When I pulled up I recognized the place since it used to house Szechuan Chef's second location, but when I stepped inside it was completely unfamiliar as it was revamped. The layout is a bit clunky as I stood inside and wasn't greeted nor was it intuitive on where to go, but I was excited to see a self serve pay by weight style HP that I saw during my travels in Chinese nearly a decade ago. Decent selection of meats, veggies, noodles, and sauces. I got a little over a pound of food and spent a little over $20, which seemed like a fair price for Portland, and opted for the dry pot variation which is finally starting to be pretty common in Portland. Food tasted good not great, but I was happy and satisfied with the food and service. BHHP occupies this weird zone for me however, since for about $10 more I can get an AYCE experience with more options at Happy Lamb, or for a few bucks less I can get Tasty Pot which is a better value and tastes a bit better but without the ability of customizing my bowl. A few days later, I went up to Vancouver BC, and was suggested to try this hot pot place with my family. When I arrived I was shocked at how BHHP kinda ripped off this place with their model, menu design, gold silverware and bowls, and even name since they are called Big Way Hot Pot instead. Despite all of this, BHHP is a nice addition to Portland's hot pot scene.

Took my family here to eat here as I saw it online and it looked very similar to Big Way Hot Pot in Canada. There was a waitlist with only one party ahead of us. The wait was super short and we were able to get in about 5 minutes. The dining area was very spacious and clean which I really appreciated and the service was quick and kind. We were brought water and utensils upon sitting down. We went to the ingredient bar and really enjoyed the wide selection. My parents liked all the seafood options and as a tofu lover, I enjoyed all the soy products offered. It was $14.99/lb which I think is reasonable and comparable to other malatang places I've tried. All of us got the medium spicy classic malatang broth. The sauce bar was nice but I think the peanut and sesame sauce comes pre salted so my sauce came out too salty. It would be nice if it wasn't salted as it was too overpowering. The spoons also made it really difficult to scoop the ingredient so I had to go in multiple times. We got our food quickly in about 10 - 15 minutes! My dad really enjoyed the soup and said he would come back while my brother and I thought the soup was lacking. I prefer a stronger richer broth but this one was a little watery and bland for me. I got medium spicy but it wasn't that spicy at all. Also, some longer to cook items like my mung bean noodles came out hard so I think it would be good for the kitchen to take note of which items have a longer cook time and to cook those first and longer. Overall it was a good experience with good and kind service. I think if the sauce bar and the broth were upgraded, I would give this place another shot.

What a fun place to eat. Food was super delicious. Loved the service. The place was fairly empty; you all need to try this place. Really delicious.

A solid malatang spot. I loved the variety of options including the sauce bar. I opted for the mala dry mix mild spicy. I think I could have gone a little higher on the spice level though. It is also really spacious in here too.

I love going to hot pot but either it has to take a few hours or there will be some stuff I didn't have/didn't want in my bowl, but this is the perfect mix when I don't have time to sit down and do the hour long process. The ingredients were fresh and the bowl comes out fast. The gold bowl and chopsticks are cute, but not very ergonomic and hurt my hand and wrist to use.
