Okay, let's be clear, this is an old school, love it for what it is American Chinese Restaurant, but heavy on the Chinese and light on the American. Reenact your favorite scene this winter with some Christmas Duck at Szechuan House! This family run eatery is critically underrated, and in my humble opinion that's a function of the many of the clientele simply don't leave reviews, or if they do, it's because they're unhappy. What I hope I can do is highlight the positive of this fantastic, but very humble establishment. The dining room is large, like X-Large. If you are looking for a big venue, this can easily be booked and with the rotating table tops, you can get all your greats eats to everyone in style. The booths are large, spacious and massive table to spread out what you'll see is an enormous lunch special in the photos. Most items outside the lunch special are traditional family style, but even the lunch portion is so large that we usually eat about half and then take the rest home. Absolutely a great value. The food is always ridiculously hot, and the service by the family/staff fantastic. They're always attentive and helpful as your order from a menu that can breach American style Chinese to some pretty near authentic dishes. Once the family gets to know you, the spicier options open up like an Asian In-N-Out secret menu. If you like Salt-n-pepper wings, in my view, these are best in San Diego. Tons of flavor, heat, but be careful, they are beyond hot at arrival, which we love. Now....some things may surprise you....I've never been a fan of sweet and sour...well...anything. My mind was blown when I was talked in to trying the sweet and sour FISH. Holy smokes! It is now a family favorite, along with the moo shu pork aka Chinese burritos. I'm not sure what sauce they use, but it may be illegal. Treat yourself to a great lunch, family outing or company / group event. Parking is always easy, and we've never had to hunt for a spot. There's also some great options for some post lunch tea nearby! Don't be put off by the exterior, THIS IS a fantastic place to grab a BIG lunch!

No-nonsense Szechuan cuisine. Including one of my favorites, Mala Fish Fillet (also known as Boiled Fish in Hot Chili Oil, sometimes Fish Stew). Spicy hot, numbing and delightful. Curry Beef Dumplings a nice starter. Extensive menu, friendly service.

I'm always looking for a good lunch special at a Chinese restaurant and this one did not disappoint. The Szechuan Garlic Chicken lunch special came with hot and sour soup, fried rice, salad, an eggroll, and a cream cheese wanton. Great value for a lot of food! The fact that they also had spicy mustard along with the sweet and sour sauce also was a huge bonus.

Honey Chicken. Large portion and delicious with a touch of spice.

Lunch specials 11-3pm for $13.95-$$15.95 includes egg drop soup, salad, egg roll and cream cheese wonton. No muss, no fuss. Food was delicious! Service was great as well. Water refills were good. Restaurant was not crowded which surprised me but many customers did order food to go.

Szechuan House services American style Chinese food so if you are looking for an authentic Chinese food experience, this place ain't it. But for American style Chinese comfort food, it's not that bad. I feel the price was a bit expensive for the quality and portion size. There's always plenty of seating and the server will leave you alone once your food is served. There's plenty of parking in the lot.

Not a long wait when you order the food. It comes relatively fast. Servings are nice and big. Clean environment, nice music.

Personally I liked the sauce and flavor for the Mapo Tofu more than the BiangBiang noodles. The mapo tofu sauce was more tangy. The beef brisket was very tender. The BiangBiang noodles are very long, but I love the texture of the noodles. Spice level was low. As someone who is weak to spice, I was able to handle it and needed to add extra chili oil in. For a sunday night dinner, wait was about 20-30 minutes. Service is standard. It was not very crowded and a good spot to get dinner. I would come back and order the Mapo Tofu again out of everything that I had there.

According to the restaurant's posted hours, they close at 10:00 PM. My family and I arrived around 9:15 PM, expecting that we still had enough time to order dinner. As soon as we walked in, the server immediately told us they were already closed. My mother politely pointed out that the posted closing time was 10:00 PM and simply asked if the kitchen happened to close earlier than the dining room. Instead of explaining the situation professionally, the server responded in a very rude tone: "Well, you guys can eat and order, but at 10:00 PM you need to be gone and out the door." Another employee then stepped in to back him up, making the interaction feel even more uncomfortable. I completely understand how the restaurant business works. I've been around the industry long enough to know that kitchens often stop taking orders before closing or that staff are trying to finish cleaning at the end of the night. If they had simply said, "We're sorry, but our kitchen is already closed," or even, "We can still serve you, but we're finishing up for the night," we would have completely understood. There was no reason to speak to us disrespectfully. What made this experience frustrating is that we never came in with an attitude or demanded special treatment. We were polite from the moment we walked through the door. We simply asked a reasonable question based on the restaurant's posted business hours, and instead of receiving a courteous explanation, we were met with unnecessary hostility. Customer service is just as important as the food. A welcoming attitude can make guests want to return, while a rude interaction can overshadow everything else. Unfortunately, this experience left such a negative impression that I won't be returning. I also would not feel comfortable bringing my family or recommending this restaurant to friends because everyone deserves to be treated with basic respect. I hope management takes this review as constructive feedback and reminds their staff that even when it's close to closing time, a little kindness and professionalism go a long way.

I arrived before our party of 7 and they were able to accommodate us by offering two table options. Thoughtful and friendly people work here. Hotpot: What a selection! I loved the mushroom broth, the assortment of fresh veggies from bok choy, romaine lettuce, lots of mushrooms options - my favorite is the enoki, and I loved the tofu skin. Beef lovers and seafood fans will enjoy this place as well. One of my fave items we ordered is a shrimp paste dish for our hotpot. That was delicious. I also love how they have a sauce bar. They also have an extensive sauce/snack/dessert bar with unlimited sesame balls, shrimp chips, and other Chinese desserts which I thought was unique. In terms of the actual hot pot ingredients, they definitely use high quality stuff and have a large variety to pick from! The highlight of the meal was the "Beef Trio" (牛三杰) -- a combination of beef, beef tripe, and beef tendon. This was easily my favorite dish of the night. The beef was tender, the tripe had the perfect bite, and the tendon was rich and satisfyingly chewy. Everything soaked up the spicy, savory sauce beautifully. So flavorful and seriously addictive. The stir-fried chicken gizzards were another standout. They had that wonderful crunchy texture, with a tangy and spicy flavor that made them incredibly appetizing. This is exactly the kind of dish that makes you want another bowl of rice. I also really enjoyed the chicken with pickled radish. The chicken was surprisingly tender and juicy, and every piece was well seasoned. The pickled radish added just the right amount of acidity and brightness, which balanced the richness of the dish perfectly. And of course, we had to finish with the brown sugar glutinous rice cakes. Crispy and golden on the outside, soft and chewy inside, with the warm sweetness of brown sugar on top. One bite instantly reminded me of flavors from childhood -- simple, nostalgic, and comforting.
