My family and I stumbled upon this place for a late lunch. What a gem we found! This is a beautiful old-school style Chinese American restaurant, family owned and run. Service was perfect - attentive and all our needs/refills met but not overly hovering or checking in when not needed. The interior was clean, neat, and very well maintained with a lovely ambiance (complete with soothing music). We ordered the hunan beef, kung pao shrimp, and sesame chicken (couldn't get a picture before my brother started digging in ). All 3 were absolutely delicious and very filling! We eat a LOT of Chinese food and have pretty discerning taste buds for what we like in this cuisine, but across the board the food was savory, flavorful and delicious. Highly recommend! read more

So my family and I were soo impressed by this place that within the same month we came here twice. My family and I used to have a tradition that every New Years Eve we'd get Chinese food. Since we moved out here to California its been hard to find a place that matches the quality u til we stopped by here. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and told we could sit wherever we'd like. Our server was David and he was so kind and attentive. The food portion was enough to eat there and bring some home which was great. My dad was in love with the egg rolls because they were soo crunchy, he only wished they were bigger. We ordered take out from here one night and though the portions were big the price seemed a little much for the quality of what it was. We ordered 2 different entrées and then cream cheese wontons because we always have to order them. They were just okay..they didn't have much cream cheese in them and they had no flavor at all. We also got the egg flower soup which I understand it was a bowl portion of soup for $12+ for soup seemed outrageous to me but it was good. The 2 entrées we got were just okay the orange chicken was so crunchy I felt like you couldn't even tell that is was chicken. Okay, let's be clear, this is an old school, love it for what it is American Chinese Restaurant, but heavy on the Chinese and light on the American. Reenact your favorite scene this winter with some Christmas Duck at Szechuan House! This family run eatery is critically underrated, and in my humble opinion that's a function of the many of the clientele simply don't leave reviews, or if they do, it's because they're unhappy. What I hope I can do is highlight the positive of this fantastic, but very humble establishment. The dining room is large, like X-Large. If you are looking for a big venue, this can easily be booked and with the rotating table tops, you can get all your greats eats to everyone in style. The booths are large, spacious and massive table to spread out what you'll see is an enormous lunch special in the photos. Most items outside the lunch special are traditional family style, but even the lunch portion is so large that we usually eat about half and then take the rest home. Absolutely a great value. The food is always ridiculously hot, and the service by the family/staff fantastic. They're always attentive and helpful as your order from a menu that can breach American style Chinese to some pretty near authentic dishes. Once the family gets to know you, the spicier options open up like an Asian In-N-Out secret menu. If you like Salt-n-pepper wings, in my view, these are best in San Diego. Tons of flavor, heat, but be careful, they are beyond hot at arrival, which we love. Now....some things may surprise you....I've never been a fan of sweet and sour...well...anything. My mind was blown when I was talked in to trying the sweet and sour FISH. Holy smokes! It is now a family favorite, along with the moo shu pork aka Chinese burritos. I'm not sure what sauce they use, but it may be illegal. Treat yourself to a great lunch, family outing or company / group event. Parking is always easy, and we've never had to hunt for a spot. Locals know about this place and order mostly to go. My favorites are the orange chicken and hunan beef or hunan tofu. They changed owners several years back, but it has since improved. Absolutely incredible! This was the closest I've had to truly authentic Chinese food since being in China. The staff were extremely friendly, warm, and kind -- you feel welcomed the moment you walk in. We started with their fried bread and house sauce, which was so good it could be a meal on its own. For mains, we ordered the fried cheese wontons, orange chicken, shrimp fried rice, and Mongolian beef. Every single dish was beyond delicious -- perfectly seasoned, fresh, and cooked to perfection. I ordered on DoorDash The egg foo yung pictures were not accurate on the menu but thankfully I've had it before at other places to know what I was ordering I enjoyed how light it tasted compared to other places that use more oil and fry the food longer. We have ordered take out and dined in the restaurant and food is always delicious and flavorful. Service is good, sometimes seems they are in a hurry but always friendly. There is parking right in front of the restaurant which is helpful. The quantity of food they serve seems just right.. not too little and not too much. I have to say I had a bad experience with them probably over 20 yrs ago and never returned until recently. No California Chinese place compares to the east coast for me, with that being said, I recently gave Szechuan House another try and I absolutely love their House Special Egg Foo Young! It's so frickin flavorful and taste authentic to me (but who am I). It comes with a large container of the sauce which is packed with shrimp, chicken, beef and veggies, served with 1 good size egg foo young patty. Its definitely enough for two people or left overs. I've ordered it 3x this month alone. It's gonna be my go to EFY from now on. I've also ordered some cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and the salt and pepper wings (the wings I would pass on those again) Obviously if an establishment has been around over 30 yrs then they are doing something right.. sure there's ups and down and always room for improvement but they are getting a solid 4 stars from me. read more

The fried wontons they start you off with were a bit overcooked, but that didn't stop me from eating half a basket of them-- they were still great! The upside down crispy noodles were tasty! They were in a clear sauce which was quite delicious. They have a little parking lot available, which made coming here convenient. We came here on a Friday night around 6 PM, and we were just about the only ones in the restaurant. It seems like they get a good amount of to-go orders. My family has been coming here for over 30 years. This is our favorite Chinese food place in San Diego. Last time I ate here, I had the hot and sour soup and kung pow chicken. The soup was fantastic, i always put lemon in my soup but this was made to perfection and didn't need. No rice needed here for the main dish as i paired the kung pao with their home made chili sauce no filler. Chinese food is best eaten and finished when fresh. The food was just like i remembered growing up, the decor nostalgic and the service was great as always.
