Our first time and what a pleasant surprise. Many times, you find a place named a specific food and then you are disappointed that they can't even do that right. This is NOT that place If you want dumplings, which is why we came, you got it and they do it well. Most of the dumplings, you choose steamed or pan fried. Here's what we had: XLB, steamed vegetable dumpling, pork and cabbage for pan fried, spicy chicken, cucumber salad, pork bun. And chicken noodle. The dumplings were handmade and the filling so good. Our favorite was the vegetable dumpling, the amount of flavor was so good. Everything we ate was good. Spicy chicken was definitely back of your throat true Szechuan spice. The cucumber was probably made fresh, so the sauce flavor wasn't as infused but overall still really good and smashed. The server was super nice and the food came out fast. Sooo Shiu Mai very good. Pan fried dumpling beef was very good. The xiao long bao was little bit too salty I thought. The spicy fried chicken... There was way too much batter and not enough meat. And I usually don't complain about this but the way things looked in the restaurant bothered me a bit. Like you can see the kitchen from the table, and the kitchen had lot of grease on the wall and that bothered me. Also the 2 giant TV that probably displayed the menu at the cashiers. They were off. The Orange Flavored Chicken was crispy and flavorful without being overly sweet, making it a great way to start the meal. The Cucumber Salad was light, refreshing, and finished with a pleasant aromatic flavor. For the main dishes, the Xiao Long Bao had a rich, savory broth that paired perfectly with vinegar. The Crab Meat & Pork Xiao Long Bao was especially satisfying and filling but a little dry. The Mongolian Beef is spicy and savory. It goes well with rice. Although the restaurant is small, it feels comfortable and welcoming. During our visit, the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing, which made for an enjoyable dining experience. Upon walking in, you get seated at a table with a QR code tucked in the corner of the table and no paper menus. I could imagine the QR codes being a problem for an older audience, especially since it's in the corner of the table and not very noticeable. The food came out in around 20 minutes. Wontons: This was by far the best dish I had at the restaurant. The spicy sauce had the perfect kick and the dumpling wrappers were thin and soft. The pork was juicy and paired well with the spicy sauce. Pork and Crab Dumplings: These dumplings were unfortunately very mediocre. Some dumplings were gushing with soup while another tin of dumplings were practically dry and lukewarm. The dumpling wrappers were very thick and made up a large amount of the dumpling which was very disappointing. Potstickers: These potstickers were absolutely amazing. The bottom of every single potsticker was crackling and crispy and each potstickers was gushing with soup with each bite. Honey Walnut Shrimp: This was one of the worser dishes I had. The shrimp had a very thick batter which made up 90% of the shrimp and the honey walnut sauce was very hard to taste due to the thickness of the batter and the inconsistency of the spread of sauce. I wasn't super impressed with this restaurant due to the mediocrity of their soup dumplings, however, their other dumpling dishes made up for the experience. read more

First time here, and it definitely won't be my last! We stumbled upon this place on a whim, and I'm so glad we did. It wasn't busy when we visited, the restaurant was clean, and the staff was incredibly friendly. They checked on us throughout the meal and made us feel very welcomed. We ordered quite a few dishes, but the standouts were the shu mai and fried rice. Both were packed with flavor and ended up being our favorites of the night. It neede rice which is an up charge apparently because wasn't provided. Next was the sesame chicken and chow mien which were 2 stars at best. One was feast and the other overcooked. My partner had been wanting to try this spot, so I tagged along with her. After sitting down, we ordered directly through their website, which sends everything straight to the kitchen. We started with a classic dumplings/dim sum combo along with the cucumber salad. The salad was mid at best and didn't really stand out. We followed that up with chow mein, which was solid. Then the xiao long bao and shu mai arrived, and those were definitely highlights, flavorful and well done. The BBQ pork buns were decent and soft, but there was noticeably more bun than filling. The chicken wings had a nice crunch to them, though I've had better elsewhere. Overall, it's a decent spot. Hi Dumplings does dumplings quite well, but not other Chinese dishes. The tables accommodated 4-5 people, and there was an assigned QR code for each group. We weren't given any paper menus and were told to place our orders directly from the QR code. While the system was efficient, it wasn't as convenient for everyone at the table. Payment was done only at the front cashier. The dumplings were definitely made to order, and they took quite some time to come out. However, the one fried dish we ordered came out almost immediately. Each table had soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil. We had ordered soup dumplings and I wish we were also given spoons. *Honey Walnut Shrimp: came on a bed of steamed broccoli. The shrimp were humongous, and the batter was just as large. The shrimp had good bounciness, but the batter was so thick it was difficult to taste the sauce. The sauce also wasn't evenly distributed, so some bites were just fried shrimp. I wouldn't get this again as the shrimp was overwhelmed by the batter and the walnuts were sparse. *Pork And Cabbage Dumplings: we got them fried for $1 more. These had juicy filling and each dumpling had a stellar crust. The wrapper could have been a tad thinner, but these were still filling and flavorful. *Xiao Long Bao: we ordered two kinds, regular pork and crab. The pork was superior in both flavor and soup. The crab dumplings were unfortunately drier, and there wasn't much seafood flavor. However, I was satisfied with the thickness of the dumpling skin. *Szcheuan Spicy Wontons: these had a more subtle numbing spice than other renditions, with more oil. The skin was the thinnest of all the dishes, and my entire party complimented it. The pork filling was dense and chewy. Overall, the dumplings were decent and affordable. The cost of the dumplings easily fed my entire party, and especially in comparison to the rising costs of Chinese dishes, it was refreshing to see hefty portions and solid flavors. My friend and I shared the cucumber salad, scallion pancakes, xiao long bao, and spicy wontons from here back in May of 2024. I think everything tasted okay, but nothing was outstanding or memorable. The cucumber salad only had garlic and the xiao long bao didn't have enough soup in it. The space was clean and service was a little slow too. We waited 5 minutes between each dish, so the last dish took 20 minutes to make. Hopefully they have improved since then, since this spot has a lot of potential. read more

Start by saying, front staff is very nice. Restaurant has sit down seating and parking lot has plenty of parking. Food wise, it was ok. The sodium flavor was through the roof on the rice and the same for oil flavor and oil texture on the chow mein. Neither in a good way. The chow mein really didn't pack much of any flavor. Orange chicken pieces were favorable size but texture was a bit on the chewy side. Portion for the rice was good but definitely fell way short on the chow mein. I literally am shook I only got what I got for $13. Especially considering what I used to get when this place was Mr. Spicy. I have been loving ordering Hi Dumplings via GrubHub. It's become one of my favorites for comfy Chinese food and the portions are huge! I typically order the fried rice, dumplings and cucumber salad. Honestly, they provide so much food that these three items alone can last me for multiple meals! Everything is packaged well and it's great food quality and quantity. Easy to order for pick up. Parking can be a little tricky since it's a small lot but plenty of spaces are typical available and street parking. I ordered the Dan Dan noodles which are very spicy! I could handle the heat from the spicy wontons. The Dan Dan was a different level of heat. I really enjoyed the spicy wontons. So I've been seeking out Non-Convoy Asian restaurants... Hi Dumplings has a Cute AF logo! And the dumplings are quite good! The soup dumplings are great! Feels very homemade, with nice chewy dough and lovely hot soup inside. Not quite as good as Din Tai Fung, but cheaper. Din Tai Fung runs $1.75/dumpling, versus $1.38/dumpling at Hi Dumpling. The vegetarian dumplings pan fried were also quite tasty, I'll have to try the meat versions next time! Minus one star though...the chow mein is pretty average, and too many bean sprouts. You're here for food, not the clean but simple and boring ambiance...though you can legit see the aunties and uncles cooking your food fresh. read more

We placed our orders, I asked for a modification on one item since there was a box to leave a note. The note was ignored. My son's dish came out about 15 minutes before the dumplings. The dumplings were just sat on the table and the server walked away. When it was time to pay, I went to the register since no check was brought. It was a very odd transaction, apparently speaking to customers is too difficult. The food was fine, but I've had better at many other places, luckily we aren't short of dumpling options in San Diego. We also tried the shrimp chow mein, the flavor was there but the noodles didn't taste too good to me. The Xiao Long Bao was ok not much flavor in the meat or soup broth. Very nice people who work here. The food is ok. I was expecting more based on the reviews but then again, there aren't a whole lot of great food choices in Allied Gardens or in the area. So for this area I guess this place is above average? Maybe? I would suggest finding a place off Convoy if you are in the mood for authentic dumplings. Recently moved close to this area and what an amazing little hidden gem! It's located in a small shopping center close to the cuppa cuppa drive through which is why I noticed it. Parking is fairly easy and there's never a wait. My husband and I have dined in twice now and both time have been a great experience. You are greeted when you enter and you can pick your table. The server/cashier will bring you water. You scan the QR code on the table and order through your phone! Very user friendly, they also have physical menus if people prefer that. We tried their cucumber salad 10/10 such nice vinegar and oil flavor (great pallet cleanser). Xaio Long Bao are a must try! 20/10 they're that good! The Szechuan spicy wontons are 10/10, if you're familiar with Szechuan and can handle the tingly numbing feel of the chili, you'll love these! My husband also tried the orange chicken and that was a 9/10 very natural orange flavor and coated well! Over all every dish we've tried has been amazing, definitely recommend! read more
