Great service and excellent food. What a lovely treat. We ordered Honey Chicken and Lemon Chicken. Both were made from chicken breast and fresh. When you come in, there's a small bowl of fried wonton strips and a dish of sweet and sour sauce on the table waiting for you. They also bring you a teapot and 2 small teacups when you get there. We enjoyed a quick lunch here. The restaurant does a brisk take out business at lunchtime and also offers a very reasonable and wide variety of lunch plates for about $10. These offerings include a choice of soup, entree with choice of rice and a chicken wing. You can get an egg roll for a small up charge. Very generous amount of tasty food, fast and friendly service as well. This place was a great find. While we were driving through downtown , we were tempted to get takeout Chinese when we saw the board. It didn't disappoint. The food was perfectly tasty, not heavy or greasy at all. They were able to prepare and be ready within 10 mins of us ordering by phone. The beef chop suey was perfect. Enough food for two people. The staff here are very nice and the food was pretty good but the one thing that ticked me off is that they will not let you box up your own food. What do you mean I can't box the food that I PAID for?! I was given the completely wrong food and was instead given a small portion of fried rice. I clarified what I was taking 3 times as well. We were in a large party so I'm not surprised they mixed it up. I think this place is a nice spot but the boxing issue is just ridiculous. read more

I haven't written a bad review in several years....but this place was so bad, I felt obligated to do so, if only to save others from the disgusting experience we just had. Popping if for a late lunch, we walked in to an entirely entirely empty restaurant. Red flag, bur not a deal killer. Then it got ugly: our waiter limped over to our booth, and I was aghast. He was Beetlejuice. Seriously, missing most of his teeth (the remaining one was rotting). He reeked of cigarette smoke. His clothes were dirty. And his hands were grimey. When I ordered, he leaned so closely towards my face, I asked him, politely to back away. When the food came out, only 3-5 minutes after placing the order (microwaved?), his blackened fingers were touching the food on our plates. Simply disgusting. Nauseating, actually. The food was fresh and came to the table quickly and also quite reasonably priced. Also, the food was not too greasy which was nice. We came on a Sunday, so one person had the buffet (13.99) while the rest ordered house chow fun, plain lo mein noodles, onion pancake, steamed dumplings, rice, and egg rolls. The buffet had a nice variety of dishes and from what I recall, there were 10 or so options to chose from as well as sauces. It was all very yummy. We also enjoyed the fried wonton chips and tea. Excellent food and run by very friendly and hard working people. Plenty of seating to dine in and plenty of space to park.

We stop by this little spot since my daughter wanted chow foon (flat noodles). The place is small and appears to be in a basement... I imagine since they have a private boarding school near by is why most customer was younger then 16. The space was quaint. Anyways the restaurant had fried wonton strip and duck sauce on the table ... In an unappealing bowl. I imagine.. they just refill it when the customer leave or no? The special chowfoon we order had no taste to it... And one color. The beef teriyaki was okay, not sweet but edible. The only reason I did not is because Szechuan taste "made me whole" financially after I discussed my issue with the manager. What was my issue? I like this place! While I was in Downtown Exeter, I stopped in at Szechuan Taste for lunch takeout. They offer 30 Business Luncheon Specials (served Mon-Sat until 3PM) with pork fried rice and chicken wing, and soup (dine-in only), priced $5.75-$6.95. A Sunday Buffet is served 12PM-3PM. I went with the L30 Shrimp Lo Mein ($5.95), which was ready to go in about 10 minutes after ordering and paying. The portion of food was generous and plentiful. The two fried chicken wings with light & crisp on the outside and tender juicy meat inside. The pork fried rice had a soft fluffy texture with a mix of onions, sprouts and fluffy egg. The lo mein dish had scallions, carrots, cabbage, tender shrimp (some cleaned) tossed with firm noodles, slightly greasy. The food was sold good and very tasty! Sure to return to Szechuan Taste of Exeter again for lunch! read more

Overpriced, Small portions and a Deceiving website. Their website states a Buffet every Sunday, It's not true. We went there to try the Buffet and were told, by the owner, once we got seated that they haven't had the buffet in a long time (almost 2 years) because of not being able to get the correct size heating (Sterno) cans. We decided to try it where we were already seated. The fried rice was very good, the General Gau (?) was nothing like we've ever had, the sauce they use in near NO flavor at all. The chicken chunks were small but covered in a thick batter making them look very big. Having 7 pieces on the plate made it take up a good amount of the medium size plate. The chicken fingers looked to be barely cooked and also were heavily battered with thin pieces of formed chicken inside. We were disappointed about No Buffet but now understand why they don't update their website taking off the Buffet, it draws people in then they will probably stay. It Worked with us... Just Once though, One and Done!! NO return trip to Szechuan Taste for us which is unfortunate, we were looking for another LOCAL Chinese food restaurant. Now, we're still looking. A nice little spot in downtown Exeter, just a short walk from the gazebo. When you're seated, your table starts with fried wonton strips and hot tea. The appetizers are pretty standard fare for a Chinese restaurant. I had the hot and sour soup, which was nicely flavored, but sort of thick. The Szechuan Hot Plate was a good value. The sauce was really tasty and there was a lot of seafood mixed into the beef and vegetables. I especially liked the fact that they used real sea scallops and not crappy bay scallops. read more

My buddy Feiner and I ordered here for our birthday celebration since we're a few days apart, got delivery General Tso's (they call him General Tso here, not Gau!) and a heaping mound of lo mein. I had a good, fast, and inexpensive take-out lunch at Szechuan Taste today. I walked in, ordered it, and I was out the door in 8 minutes. The interior was nicer than I expected because the outside isn't much to look at. I didn't 'spend much time inside but the two people working there were both friendly and they made me wish that I could have stayed and eaten in the restaurant. I'm not in Exeter all the time but I think that the next time I want Chinese food in Exeter, this will be my first choice. read more

I have driven by this place many times and did takeout a few years ago. Before Yelp or before I knew about Yelp.... I wanted to baseline my 2 other Chinese restaurant reviews so I orders the same items and I will tell you that they were on par. I think that out of the other 2 this would sit right in the middle. I ordered: Hot and Sour Soup which was still hot when I got home. It had very nice flavor and color and was not overwhelming in palette heat. Chicken with Broccoli with non spicy brown sauce. This dish was pretty good but the sauce was rather thin and didn't really hold to the chicken therefore the chicken didn't have a ton of flavor but the broccoli was very good. Lemon Chicken. The chicken was very fried and a dark color. They gave me a pint size container of the lemon sauce which was excellent so that the dish was not soggy when I got home. More than enough sauce for sure. The flavor was above average although I would have preferred the chicken to have been less fried (dark). I was happy to see that they gave me the typical bag with soy sauce, duck sauce a few fortune cookies but noodles to go in the soup. This is something that I have not found in MA or NH since living in NY and it was a welcomed surprise. Another surprise was that I got a LARGE container of white rice for free with one of the entrees. Most Chinese restaurants these days charge you for white rice and you only get a very small container. I used the rice to soak up the sauce from the chicken and broccoli and that was like a whole dish be itself. I would order out from here again but probably would not eat in. The decor is dark and outdated in my opinion and eating Chinese in front of the TV is perfect in my opinion unless you are a drinker and need your Scorpion Bowl or Mei Ti. read more

So, the entry way has an awning that is too low for anyone over 5'10. The first step down is 3 inches, be careful. The smell of the place is musty and urine like. The smell is actually pretty horrible. The server was prompt and friendly. The water was devoid of any chlorine or chemical taste. The fried noodles were already on the table, nice, but gross that they are left out. The server is attentive with keeping the water glasses full. The beef teriyaki is lean but somewhat bland. The boneless spare ribs are dry and bland, but they are fairly lean, which is a good thing. The beef lo mein had a funky taste and was quite disgusting. Something is bad in this one... The sesame chicken was excellent. The pork fried rice was un exciting , but the ingredients appear fresh and of good quality. I tried the lo mein again, funky... Definitely not right. The air ducts are filthy... They were nice enough to take the lo mein off the check. Overall, service is excellent, food is made from quality ingredients but is on the bland side, the smell is horrible, the air ducts are filthy, and the general upkeep of the interior is poor. I came here for lunch during the week. I ordered the seasame chicken, egg drop soup and egg roll. I didnt really like any of them. The sauce on the chicken was almost bright red, never seen this before. The soup was boring and the egg roll, I couldnt get through it.
