This neighborhood eatery is so real and gooood! Authentic and actually lived up to the hype by my cousins! I got the mapo fish soft tofu which was cooked perfectly. The stewed lion's head meatballs reminded me of my mama's TT_TT yum~ The spicy wonton filling is flavorful even on its own... I started scarfing them down before I realized i forgot to take pictures. The choose your own cold dishes were all delicious. Last not least, I'm excited to see millet porridge!! This tasty bowl of goodness helps with digestion, pH and just feels so good. Oliver Twist would definitely ask for some more. Rice is included yall! This needs to be an essential service back in all Chinese restaurants. The Dan Dan noodles had just the right amount of spice and that bold, savory flavor I was craving. The peanut noodles were creamy, nutty, and super satisfying--definitely something I'd order again. I also tried the pig ears and peanuts, and wow, they were so good! The pig ears had a great texture, and the peanuts had the perfect crunch with mouth numbing spice. This is a family run restaurant. Ive been coming here for years (maybe almost 10). Usually the dad is cooking in the back and the sons are waiting the tables. The place is a little run down but it doesnt really matter for me. The side dishes are very good. I usually like getting the pig ear and the peanuts. Sometimes when coming here around dinner time they have run out of the more popular ones. I know a lot of people come here just for the side dishes. As for their dishes, my favorite is the dandan noodles. I get it every time. Its not too spicy and has tons of meat under. Definitely a homey comforting feel when I eat it. The rice cakes are usually a little oily but theyre so good when dipped in the dandan noodle sauce. Food overall was too salty. Pancake was too thick like 3x too thick like a frisbee. Boiled spicy fish sauce was gelatinous like took much cornstarch.. Does that even belong in the dish? Negative one star or negative five stars if Yelp had the option. I went in looking forward to dining but it was all downhill after the service from the lady (boss/server). I ordered an appetizer dish and took time to decide on a main dish. She had a sour puckered face when I gave her my choice. When I placed my order for the main dish the lady scoffed, rolled her eyes and said "that's it?". Yes, that's all I wanted and what I got wasn't even what I wanted because of the poor menu description or lack there of. When I asked about the fish soup (which was fried fish on a plate and a bowl of noodles in soup) I received the lady made it a point to tell me I was wrong for not understanding the Chinese name for the dish. Somehow "boneless fish" describes fried fish, I should have known according to the lady. I had also asked about rice noodles and she didn't understand the word "rice", which seems puzzling considering rice is a common ingredient in the cuisine her establishment provides. I am extremely disappointed by the attitude of this lady. I will happily not recommend this dining establishment for this lady cares nothing but for herself and certainly not the customers. Also the main dish ordered seemed to be put together like it was something made at home and not a restaurant menu item. Good food but the style of some of their dishes that we usually order elsewhere was prepared a bit differently. The service was ok and there was a bit of a language barrier. Good thing that a lot of their dishes have pictures to be able to relate too. The one thing I liked about Szechwan Garden are the real exotic offerings that they have. Andrew Zimmern would be proud of me. To some it's disgusting, but I tried intestines in brown sauce, sliced pig ears, and pork tongue. We also ordered their mapo tofu and pork with dry bean curd. To me, everything tasted good. Also, since it's Szechwan style, it can be spicy for some. I would only go back to try some of the other bizarre exotic foods they offer. Was kind of disappointed with my experience here. The shredded pork with bean curd was drowning in oil and all the pieces of meat were fatty. We also ordered the diced chicken but that chicken was not fresh.My mom thought we ordered squid instead of chicken because of how chewy and funky the meat was. They have the best beef noodle soup in my area but their service was just subpar! The father was working in the kitchen when his teenager son managed the front. You can tell this young man didn't want to be there. He was playing on his phone continuously and every time he came over, whether it was taking order, delivering the food or giving me the bill, he would roll his eyes and respond with a very unpleasant attitude. I like their food but I expect the service to be at least cordial. Having a family member to help out can save money but for the sake of the business, it may be time for them to get hired help. And I don't live anywhere close to Artesia but we make the drive cuz the food is really fantastic, especially the cold dishes which I dont find anywhere else. Its a true hole-in-the-wall restaurant serving authentic food at an amazing price. The fare is much bolder, fresher, and unapologetic when it comes to flavor. An overload of oil is still iconically present though it doesnt seem as dreadful to ingest. Maybe its because my crisp & oh-so-cold cucumber chucks are freely tossed in a refreshing coat of oil with generous amounts of garlic & salt. Potentially liberal dashes of MSG but I carelessly don't inquire. Their spicy wontons are also drenched in a puddle of chili oil yet you immediately disregard it as you pluck one up and gently dab off any regret. Ahhh.. so many cold & warm dishes to try.
