We have been to Kim Tar for many years especially being that this restaurant has been in business for well over 30 years and has such consistency in flavor, that I have never had a bad tasting dish, never disappoints. The appetizer of 1/4 roast duck is delicious and juicy, so flavorful with the right amount of salt. The house wonton and egg noodle soup is a must especially since it is featured as the main photo on the menu. The egg noodles are chewy and fresh, the wontons have a meat filling that I could eat without any need for a sauce or condiment, and the broth with the garlicky flavor is what culminates this soup into a taste awakening, so good! Came back for the duck noodle soup and ordered their Fried chicken wings. I noticed there was only 1 feature for the wings which is odd, because the wings are so good! My duck soup came out within like 3 minutes upon ordering and soon after maybe 5 minutes later the wings came out. Spicy salt Wings 5/5 Temperature piping hot! Super juicy and fried to perfection! They use peanut oil I'm assuming because it tastes the same as you get from 626 Hong Kong cafes. Service 5/5 Hostess went above and beyond and checked in with all patrons. I initially packed up my soup with my own container left on the table , so I had requested for a box for the left over wings which the hostess asked if it'd be okay for her to prepare it. Comes by and places the already wrapped box of wings to me while I'm finishing up paying. She even asks if I want to place my packed soup inside the bag with no looks of frustration. I'm giving a generous 3 star. The food is tasty but the portions are small. Talk about shrinkflation. I was shocked the chow mein was such a puny portion. Aren't noodles supposed to be a plentiful dish? In addition to the small chow mein, I ordered the "lunch special" green beans. It was delicious but barely enough for one person. Definitely not a shareable meal. Go for the full entree. Lunch special is not special. I'm all for helping a small business. This restaurant is located like about 15 minutes away, so it's very convenient for us. i'm familiar with Kim Tar because I think they have branch in Monterey Park and I visit Monterey park a lot. We've been wanting to try their lobster, but it was lunch time, so maybe next time. their duck and pork are good just reminds me of Sam woo, we wanted to do something different this time. Chow fun tastes pretty good, it has the umami aroma and the beef is tender too. For the bbq rice variety we have the bbq pork and soy sauce chicken. Bbq pork is lean yet tender and of good quality, soy sauce chicken also good. I personally really liked the cabbage pickle that comes with the rice. Service is very good too. There's many empty tables when we were there coz it's after lunch period so it's pretty quiet. We used to eat here with my co workers and find the food great. However, we were dissatisfied today on how the restaurant doesn't inform us that they would charged us 18% gratuity. I understand that tipping is a"must" here in our country but it is very disappointing how they wouldn't give you an itemized receipt before you are being charged. May it be a party of 3 or 5, they will automatically charged you 18% gratuity, so beware. I am typically generous in giving tips as I work as a server too but I tip according to how good the service I get. My mom immediately recognized the manager from his other restaurant decades ago. We had an honest chat about how tough the restaurant industry has gotten, with respect to rising costs and proper labor. Roast duck was $40 for dine in. It's $34 for takeout as of July 2023. Got some other dishes like clams and shrimp. Deep fryer oil wasn't fresh, but overall the chef's palate appears to be correct.
