We got take out here to go back to the hotel and eat. I picked this place basically cause it was close to the hotel and seem like it had all the normal Chinese food. We got the beef chow fun, pot stickers, beef fried rice and the general and his chicken! I called it in and the person taking the order took it accurately. The food was ready is just a little bit after arriving. We get back to the hotel and all the food is what it's supposed to be. They have plates and everything else at the hotel. The general chicken was good, pretty standard deep fried bereded meat nuggets, the chow fun was good as was the fried rice. I added some salt to the rice made it better. The pot stickers got a little cool during the ride over, so I zapped them in the microwave quick and then they were fine. If I was in this area again and needed Chinese food to go, I'd go back there, sure. read more

New to Benicia, and thought I would try the local Chinese restaurant. After living in Napa for a number of years, and being subjected to absolutely average Chinese restaurants, all of which were basically 3 stars and served food that tasted exactly the same, I was hopeful that Benicia would have something above average. Sadly, the meal made me wish for the average Chinese food of Napa. I had a pretty basic takeout order. Potstickers, a chicken dish, a vegetable dish, and rice. The rice was fine. The potstickers had clearly been cooked earlier, and then zapped intensely in the microwave to reheat them. As anyone who has ever zapped potstickers in the microwave knows, if you REALLY zap them, you wind up with very dry potstickers with wrinkly wrappers. Which is exactly what I found when I opened my package. Bleh. Just bleh. I ate one, the rest went into the organic waste bin. And I think I'm being nice in assuming it was actually organic. The rest of the meal, the chicken dish and the vegetable dish, was perfectly average. They had different sauces that somehow managed to taste the same. I did not bother to keep the leftovers; they joined the potstickers. I picked up my food around dinner time on a weekday night. The restaurant was empty. I should have taken that as an important clue. The person who helped me seemed to be very annoyed about something. Perhaps a microwave that had malfunctioned? Life in general? If not for the potstickers, the chicken and vegetable dishes would have earned this restaurant 2.75 stars. The potstickers and demeanor of the person who served me brought it down to a 2. If I could give it a 1.75, I would. Sadly, I must continue to exist in a Chinese food desert. read more

Loved everything about this meal! The food was great, especially the mushu pork which they prepared right at the table. Service was super fast, and the place is spotless with great presentation. We asked for chili oil but got a spicy sambal instead (maybe a little mix-up?), but it was still tasty. Tho I really prefer to have chili oil. There is nothing more upsetting than inconsistency with food. I tried this place several weeks ago and got the ribs. They were so good, like unbelievably good. Ordered them again today, actually ordered two orders because my partner ended up eating half of the last order, only for these to be way overcooked & extremely tough. Very rude and racist staff member! I went in to purchase a bottled water and also requested plastic utensils. The waiter that was the issue said to me "what do you want" to me upon my entering in. When I informed him of what I wanted he looked at the manager who told him "it's fine" and was then presented with the water. Upon asking for utensils I was just given a fork. When we reached the front counter to settle up I asked about a knife in which the waiter said they don't have it and then went on to add that "this isn't a steak house" in a sarcastic manner. I then decided to get my money back. The guy was standoffish but agreed to give me the refund. I explained that I didn't appreciate his demeanor towards me as well as the comment and will not enable it by giving my money to the business. He then responded by saying "it's cool, we don't want your kind here anyway." At that point I requested to speak with the manager. The manager was complicit and gave a fake apology. Never coming to this place again since "my kind" isn't welcome there. My suggestion would be to find somewhere else eat since they clearly have preference of who's able to eat there and who's not. We've lived in Benicia for almost thirty years and have always come to this place as long as I can remember, whether it was for a quick lunch, take out, or to celebrate a special occasion. Szechwan House has been there serving Benicia for a very long time. It is a family-owned Chinese restaurant serving home-cooked delicious meals at very reasonable prices. There is no waiting to be seated and their service is very quick, too. Some of our favs are salt n pepper spare ribs, honey-walnut prawns, and roast duck. They used to have all-you-can-eat buffet during pre-pandemic times but what I really hope and look forward to is someday having dim-sum days. Are you craving typical American Chinese food? This is pretty much standard. You aren't going to get the wow affect coming here, but you will get your fix for Chinese food when you aren't trying to be adventurous. They don't have typical "Szechuan" food, the delicious burn you get on your tongue. It's just typical Chinese American food. You basically are getting a restaurant that caters to its demographic population. The service was good. I can't really complain. They give you what you order in a timely manner. WOW when I say bad I mean horrible .... Lemon chicken was tough and the sauce was thick and nasty , it came out in a full size piece of pounded thigh meat sliced up , it was tough as jerky ... The chow mein was top ramen noodles ( their so called Lomain ) .. The crab rangoons had almost NO crab or cream cheese , they had maybe a pinch worth ... string bean chicken was slimy , string beans looked old and possibly frozen ... Pork fried rice had ZERO flavor ,,, and the honey walnut prawns was very small shrimp and they was burnt ,,, I couldn't believe how bad the food was ,,, Now for the worst part bad food is one thing ,,,, HOLY SMOKES don't go into the bathroom YUCK it was absolutely disgusting ... Besides Panda Express, the only other game in town. After 30 years, it's time to replace the carpet, lay a new coat of paint, update the lights and fans, and please remove the clutter. Create a dining room where your friends want to gather. And, prepare food fit for an emperor. I'm guessing the kitchen needs an upgrade and deep cleaning. They are our go-to place for Chinese - friendly, efficient, and excellent food - and were lifesavers during the pandemic when so many places here in Benicia closed. We usually do takeout and get enough for two dinners and a lunch which usually entails: * 2 (or 3) orders of potstickers * 2 (or 3) orders of hot & sour soup (theirs is exceptional and reheats very well), * 1 order of Kung Pao chicken * 1 order of beef (usually Mongolian Beef or Beef with Oyster Sauce) or pork (usually Pork with Garlic Sauce), and * 2 orders of House Fried Rice Sometimes we'll swap something out for fish (salt & pepper prawns or house scallops). Service - I called in the order and my husband went to pick it up. The food was ready in 10-15 minutes from calling. Food - Orange chicken- we loved this! We got entree portions for everything and it was really generous. Fried chicken wings - this one was ok. We wished there was more seasoning to it Hot and sour soup - delicious! They add a mix of pork and chicken in there and along with the tofu and egg it's a super tasty soup. Walnut prawns - rich and slightly sweet. Always a seafood favorite when we go to a new Chinese restaurant. Overall, portions were really generous and prices were decent. Since we are in covid and Doordash/Grubhub is even more a thing than it was before, so I'm always trying different places. My favorite place wasn't open this particular day so I decided to give this place a shot since it's been years since I've tried them out and I was pretty impressed! The Chow Fun was perfect. I really liked how big the noodles were too. That definitely looked like it was fresher compared to the usual size I'm used to seeing. The beef in the dish was also superb. Not too salty and not too chewy. The Sweet and Sour pork was really good but I just wish it was a little more crunchy. It was just a little too soggy but definitely still edible. The Potstickers were pretty dang good though. I'm definitely gonna try them again one of these days but overall very impressed with my DoorDash order. read more
