If you must drink, and you find yourself, God forbid, in LA Verne, kick back, sit back and start dreaming as you plan your visit Taberna. Different people have different ideas of what makes their ideal party place, so here, in no particular order, are my top reasons and why I think you should come here: The chump at the door cards everyone regardless of age. I'm 60, clearly, and was forced to show ID to enter regardless of my balding head, grey hair and crows feet. This is not good for the self esteem, except maybe for the cigarette smoking divorceé looking for a drunk loser to pay for her drinks. What's so special about bartenders? Here, not much. Maybe here at Taberna, it's the long, late nights, or the complicated drinks ordered by La Verne's glitteratti, or maybe it's the demanding barely legal customers. Whatever it may be, the bartenders are bewildered on how to tip a bottle of liquid upside down and pour it into a glass. At Taberna, they embrace the concept of team work. Waitresses eagerly try their hand at bartending. One of my buddies asked a waitress attempting to mix a cocktail "what are you making"? Her response " just making it up as I go" as she poured anything with reach into the glass. Topped off with excessive cranberry, anything is drinkable. Stick to bottles and cans. The crowd at Taberna is right out of the 909. The notion of widespread lifted trucks and tattooed, flat-brimmed-hat wearing bros must be at least in part the result how isolated the inland's people have been. The idea of backwater comes to mind. Nothing highbrow here folks. People apparently come to your bar for your party. Many return to your bar based on that party's experience. And that experience is heavily dependent on having the right crowd. Everyone here seems too drunk to drive and ready for a fight. I asked a bartender what does Taberna means, he shrugged his shoulders, said who knows and continued to pour drinks. The mess he created in the glass may as well have been bar mat juice. The recipient eagerly guzzled it down and chased it with a shot of house tequila. Just another Saturday night at Taberna, so line up, bring your ID, and enjoy what seems like the Georgia wilderness. After the USC/UCLA game we wanted to go somewhere that served tapas because we weren't too hungry. Being on the way home, we decided to give this new place a try. Right in the heart of downtown La Verne this place has the potential to be a gem in downtown after some tweaks to their menu. First off though the decor is amazing!! There's inside seating with a bar as well as tables. But there's also outside seating with an outside bar. The incorporation of water and fire outside really elevates the environment. They have music playing in the background, and as the night went on they even had live music playing. The outside seating area is dimly lit which just adds to the ambience making it a cozy place to bring a date or just hanging out with friends. Service was great. From the first impression with the lady at the front who greeted us, to all the staff that we interacted with and even the owner, who came to talk to us, everyone was just so friendly. Special shoutout to our waitress Del who was just really attentive, always checking in on us to see if we needed anything else. Great job Del!! Food needs some help. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are new and still working out the kinks inregards to flavors. We ordered the following dishes: 1. Smoked trout 3/5- consistency of a spread with saltine crackers. Flavors were ok. 2. Shrimp cocktail 4/5- small sized shrimp served with tortilla chips. Tasted good, especially with the slice of lemon on the side. Flavors were all there. 3. Avocado toast 3/5- creamy avocado spread on tribeca bread. The shaved parmesan really saved this dish from being scored lower. 4. Al pastor quesadilla 3/5- the sauce that's served on the side really drowns out the taste of the al pastor unfortunately. A good amount of thinly sliced protein, inbtwn warm tortilla shell. It was good. 5. Sweet and spicy sausage bites 2/5- seemed like any randomly made store bought sausage. Nothing extraordinary. 6. Street corn 5/5- this by far was the best tasting thing. Deconstructed, off the cob. Warm, flavors were balanced. And the tortilla pieces on top added an extra layer of texture. It's a must order when you're here!! To say their drinks are heavy handed is an understatement!!! You can definitely taste and feel (afterwards) the alcohol!! I had their old fashion, their painkiller drink as well as their mudslide martini. The painkiller tastes great!! Very fruity. Really tasted the rum, as well as the pineapple and orange juice. The mudslide martini was rich and the essence of chocalate really comes through. I always thought more is always better, but when it came to the old fashioned, all I tasted was alcohol. Not that great. Quite honestly I had a hard time figuring out what rating to give this place. Ranged from 5 stars to 2 stars. After going back and forth I settled at 4 stars. Service and decor are a for sure 5 star. Food and alcohol though was a let down, easily being only at 2.5 to 3 stars.... knowing that they are new and hoping they are still trying to work out the kinks, coupled with exceptional service and environment I finally settled at a 4 star review. First and last time. Thursday night 7 pm thought I would take the family to dinner. Daughter wanted to try Taberna. First impression, an unkempt college bar. With an open mind we sat on the patio. There was a small college aged crowd. All were polite and friendly. The easy-up we sat under had no lights under it. Staff was attentive and professional. The menu of Tapas style dishes looks and sounds delicious. Then our order came out. Our order exactly. Soft Brie with Marzano tomatoes and toast. Meatballs, el pastor sandwich, Italian sandwich and the caprese sandwich. It's was amazingly Bad. I'll start in order. Brie and tomatoes. Pretty sure the Brie was cheese wiz and the Marzano tomatoes was a small bowl of watery sauce (no tomatoes). Bad. Meatballs. Straight from the freezer. All 5 had the consistency of an eraser. They were seriously bad. Rubbery and flavorless. Bad. El pastor sandwich was the worst. Not even sure what was between the bread. It had a bit of old chili and hamburger helper flavor. It was bad bad! Italian sandwich was something like I make at home when I'm in a hurry. Plain, edible, still bad. Caprese sandwich was ok at best. It's served with a balsamic reduction olive oil dip. Before I ever leave a review I eat at the place a couple times because they could be having an "off" day that day. Well I've eaten there several times now. Their food is decent and i enjoyed it. But EVERYTHING is expensive and it's not a tomahawk steak. We are talking simple foods. Tacos and quesadillas. So an order of 3 tacos is 11$ my wife's 1 drink (pomegranate margarita) was 14$ not in a big glass smaller than a "solo" cup. Now I get there's overhead. As a business owner I know what it can cost as well. But.... if you're expensive you better be on point and good in every way.... The service is lacking. Not sure if the ladies are new at this but there was very little attention to our table never once got a refill in the hour we sat there I saw our server twice. But again I figured she was busy. Ordered food to go and i swear it felt like I was on the phone for 30 minutes. Again this is simple food. Meat tortillas and cheese. So finally I get off the phone. Wait and go pick up my to go order for my second try at this place. The girl is young but that's means nothing. She's the first person you see as you walk up she represents the company at that point. She gets me my food we exchange. "Thank you very much have a great night you too take care". I get home and the order was wrong and missing food. I called they weren't sure what ordered or didn't order they said they would remake the food but I'm already home it's 9:30 in the evening. Crap thing is I literally went here ONLY because I wanted what was ordered but didn't get. As a patron I get we are going through some weird times but it doesn't change general order taking and service. That's meat and potato stuff.
